NOTE: When the IBIS does work, it's amazing! The reason I consider it the worst IBIS is that it doesn't work in so many situations, let's hope Canon can fix it.

    • @harrison00xXx

Well, the IBIS works 99% of all the times, especially with Canon (EF) lenses....
Damn, even my Sigma 50mm 2.8 macro is much more stable on the R7 than on any camera before!
Where i really saw how bad or non functional IBIS can be.... Sigma 150-600 Contemporary.... the internal lens stab is cancerous and IBIS refuse to work with this lens 100%, making it effectively a tripod only lens for video.
But i once took with me a tripod at a short wildlife trip... as much you brag as videographer about the R7s IBIS..... lets be honest, if you really want usable video material, you better get your ass up and take with you a tripod, it make sense for video, even with a basic mount.
Yeah its true, the RF 800 F11 is handheld superb stabilized on the R7 and as crazy this sounds - a video on effective 1280mm with the RF 800 is looking much more stable than a video with even just 300mm (=effectively ONLY 480mm) on the Sigma 150-600

Ohh and btw, your "so many times" just means: Only MF/old lenses..... who ever is pairing any older, not so sharp lens with a R7 made something very very wrong. Especially manual focus lenses.... its like as if you dont use the best feature of the camera...
99% of the people are able to use the IBIS of the R7 for sure. Its just the nearly exincted group of old videographers/youtubers which still use old MF lenses on these cameras which get troubles and its ok.... Canon just want to tell you: "Go for Canon Autofocus lenses at least!"

This is a matrix stabilizer problem.
Let's take a 10-18mm lens as an example.
    1. Turn on the camera menu - to record video without a lens.
    2. Pull the 10-18 lens out of the camera.
    3. Turn on the camera without a lens and in the settings of the matrix stabilizer set the focal length parameters for manual lenses - 10m.
    4. Press the 10-18 lens against the adapter, but do not snap. And you will see how your camera will stabilize well at a focal length of 10mm.
Camera firmware 1.3.1 - manual lenses with matrix stabilizer work very well!
I think that the kenon simply does not want users to use old lenses. From a technical point of view, you can stabilize for all lenses from kenon. I claim it, as I'm an electronics engineer!

I took delivery of a Canon R7 last Friday (12/16/22). So far I'm not too happy with it. It may go back to Amazon for the following reasons:
    1. I have a EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 L. My favorite lens. It has a non-functioning IS. IBIS will not turn on, with either the lens IS switch on or off. One reason I bought the R7 was to bring IS back to this lens. So I could (a). Live with no IS on this lens. (b). Finally send the lens back to Canon and probably spend $500 plus to get it fixed. (d) Tear the lens apart and try to fix it myself. There is a UA-cam video on how to tear it down, but I don't know if I could ever get it back together again??
    2. EF lenses with working IS, the IS runs all the time, until the camera goes to sleep or is turned off. This can't be good for the IS module and battery life.
    3. There is no battery grip for this camera. I have big hands and a grip makes it much easier for me to hold a camera.
If I send it back I might spend a few hundred more and get a used Sony A7R IV. I know the IBIS on that camera works with any lens. I know Canon could fix the first two with firmware, but will they???

Canon already mentioned that the IBIS will work best with IS RF lenses. They even told that one will not have that pleasing IBIS experience with adapted EF lenses. I have a T7i for Video, and I'm unable to find a decent Canon upgrade to do the same thing in 4K (24 or 30fps) with IBIS. Any suggestions? I was going to get the R7 but if the IBIS is useless, I may as well get the R10. Although R10 is barely an upgrade from the T7i, it has the same sensor. I'm going to mention something that will likely be VERY unpopular. I think what Canon keeps telling you is exactly the problem. The example you and Michael Turner shows makes this very clear to me. Canon has likely disabled IBIS with third party lenses and accessories. Regardless off whether it should or should not make a difference, it seems like that is what they did. On Turner's video he's showing us that the Mieke adaptor is having issues, on yours its the 7Artisens lenses. Canon is taking the RF and 3rd party accessories very serious this time around.

Hi Mark, someone discovered a workaround for the non-connection lenses (samyang 8mm f3.5 for instance) it's a simple trick: set the IS in the R7 to OFF, then press down the shutterbutton halfway, release it and then put the IS on in the R7(page 8). This will start the IBIS and it will stay on untill the camera falls asleep and you wake it up again. I'm shure you already found this but just to make shure you didn't miss it.
I'm having another question though. I'm afraid it's more of a frustration. How is your experience with the R7 and the rf-s 18-155mm? Because it was very bright outside i took a picture at 150mm at 1/500th of a second. Now if you believe the 7 stops benefit canon claimes this body+lens combination gives you, it means that this shot was virtually taken at 1/64000 of a second (1/500 x 2 x2 x2 x 2 x2 x2 x2= 1/64000), right. So it shouldn't have any movement blurriness, right. Well it did! Of course i checkt if the IS was on and it was! At this moment i'm very disappointed. I'm hoping you are going to tell me what i'm doing wrong... Kind regards, Herman

A question: When you shot with a manual focus/contactless lens that focuses internally doe that not mean that an 85mm lens becomes a shorter focal length when it is focused very near. How does this effect how I should set the manual IBIS number. I use a Laowa 85mm macro that focuses to 2:1 without lengthening or moving farther from the sensor. If I am shooting at 2:1 is the IBIS set manually correct at 85mm or would it be closer set to 50mm or even less? The camera has no way of knowing where the lens is focused or whether that lens is focuses by extension. If I put extension tubes on the lens and focus on a subject the same distance from the camera to the subject, the version with tubes has a tighter field of view than the bare lens. Could this be affecting results with a cinema lens designed to avoid focus breathing and not being 85mm except at infinity? You said all 85mm are the same. Are they?

I come from 500d to 80d( I'm a canon fan boy) and think that canon is dying (with denying 3rd party lens producing any rf lens although I don't own 3rd party lens) and losing to Sony. I'm thinking of getting a full frame camera and ready to ditch canon for Sony. Canon is way behind Sony on every aspect plus with the rf mount copy right, don't get me wrong canon have every right to their intellectual property but why not canon let the other 3rd party produce the lens with a fee for every lens the 3rd party company produce. Not mentioned yet that the R7 isnt really targeted for manual focus and videographer junkies and mostly you want good and fast tracking.
Also.... I am using the R7 with:
      EF:

      Sigma 50mm 2.8
      Canon 100mm 2.8L IS macro
      and a RF 800
Even on the 50mm sigma the IBIS works well, on the canon lenses definately better.
When you want to look for bad things at canon, you have to look at their cripple hammer and that they now block 3rd party lenses, probably also their pricing.
But i am very happy with the R7 IBIS (with my lenses!)
When we really talk about R7 problems:
      - shutter shock
      - rolling shutter in electronic and 4k fine video

    • @luism.2050
      @luism.2050 Рік тому

The M6 mk ii is better. You have all 3 dials for your exposure: this is so much more pleasant and faster to shoot with them. Bouncing flash that can be tilted up to soften the light. I actually like the evf accessory: when mounted, it’s comfortably away from the camera body so you can use touch focus without your nose touching the screen. The grip and build quality are much better. The AF in low light situations works better. Faster shooting speed (15 fps mechanical). Better sensor. The screen also seems more accurate in terms of colours and exposure … Only thing I really prefer on the M50 is the vari-angle screen for portrait oriented shots, especially low angle. And sometimes the evf accessory is a slight bother to pack the camera in my sling bag.
imo the M6 mk 2 is the best apsc mirrorless camera (for photography) Canon has released in recent years, with the least intentional cripples. (I’m ignoring video specs obviously: e.g. i’m annoyed the AF is deactivated in 120p !)
But a camera body is nothing without good lenses. If the sigma prime trio covers all your needs, or if you have the money for high quality EF lenses, you’ll get the most out of this underrated camera, even with Canon killing this system. If it’s just for photography and you don’t mind having kinda bulky adapted EF glass, I think it’s not a bad choice.
I still love my M6. I’m keeping it. However I have started to transition to Sony specifically for 3 apsc lenses: sony 70-350, sigma 18-50 f2.8, sony 11 f1.8.
I now have the zooms and they are amazing. Way better IQ than the ef-m zooms. I prefer the ergonomics and shooting experience with my M6. But I’m getting used to the A6400 and the results are clearly better.
And since I’m starting to take more videos, I can continue to grow with Sony…
Canon needs to pay much closer attention to how the market and customers needs are evolving. The path they’re on, they will go the way of Kodak if they keep this up for much longer.

All these new canons are a little subjective. Better offerings elsewhere. They are only attractive for existing users who already have EF since the RF apsc is in need of help. Thanks to the tunnel vision EFM users are forced to go way back to convert EF. Why not EFM???? At leased those were made for apsc.

Have Sony mounts been around near as long as Canon/Nikon? I bet if Sony would have been, they would have made a few changes in mounts over time as well. I definitely agree about locking out 3rd party being a terrible strategy for the consumer. But, the whole big body camera business has been struggling big time for the last several years due to sales and competition from the average consumer just using their cell phones. I assume that Canon is locking their system (for now) to capitalize on the $$ made from people switching to RF mount lenses. Once that tapers off and/or they stop supporting (SERVICING) EF mount glass, they'll open it up eventually. Just a hunch.
