I live in Germany, have never heard anyone in Europe use gofundme or similar for anything. Medical debt is also not know here.
Exceptions are people in poor countries ask for donation to get their kids treated in foreign country (usually US), in case social ensurance is not able to cover it (but is very rare), due to local doctors are of the opinion there is too low or no chance to succeed…
Regarding funerals, people just donate some money when they are at funeral, but are not asling uknown people for any donations over social media.

TBH, the US is no longer a medical destination for citizen of the 3rd World. Medical advances in the US have been hampered by the overwhelming cost of healthcare and a lack of talent because the cost of medical education is so high. The top US medical schools are catering more and more to foreign students who have very little attachment to the US, its people or their welfare. America is now importing nurses from 3rd World countries but doctors from India where educational corruption is the norm.

I have heard of people using gofundme if their pet - usually a cat or a dog - needs eg a very expensive medication, or the doggy equivalent of a hip replacement, and they can't afford it ...
Here, at a funeral, the only money that people donate will be to a charity which was a favourite of the deceased person, or which helped him or her in some important way. Funeral/death announcements and notifications often include, 'donations to 'XYZ' charity in lieu of flowers, please'.

To be honest, as a German, I feel sorry for US citizens. In some ways, the US resembles a third world country. The US is all about money and guns. Similar to Somalia. It's unsafe, you'll go bankrupt if you have an accident, lose your job for whatever reason. Your schooling costs a fortune, etc... I don't know of anyone using go-fund-me. One phrase which I have heard and is the impression I get of Americans is "Willfully ignorant". To busy shouting "we do it best" to actually look around the world, take lessons from others and change it to be the best. The "Pledge of Allegiance" in schools to me smacks of indoctrination. In Sweden you pay a burial tax of roughly 0,25% if you have any income. That way anyone dying will get a regular state funeral prepaid with taxes if they cant afford a fancy one or die without any relatives. But most will opt for a private funeral with more options if they want to hold it for surviving family.

I realy never heard of anyone in EU using gofundme for any serious stuff like healthcare or education. Sure there are things like Buy me a Coffee or Patreon if someone is providing some popular services to certain community to partially cover the cost, but that realy are laughable sums like 200 eur a year and so on. As for the funeral i think its expensive everywhere, but then again it depends on what is considered "expensive" in each country. Here in Czech republic its probably like 5k eur for top notch all in one solution (nice coffin + ceremony + pimp ass granite grave with 2 positions next to eachother - usually 3x3 or 4x3 meters + other funeral services) sometimes people if religious bigtime give some money to church to perform requiems, but that doesnt realy count. If a family decides to do a cremation, its a lot less, maybe around 1 - 1.5k

I live in Den Haag (The Hague), it's the 3rd largest city in The Netherlands with nearly 550,000 people living here, and although there are homeless people, you'd barely see them roaming on the streets anymore. Used to be different about 20-30 years ago, when I saw a lot of them. Most now have some form of shelter provided by the municipality or subsidized/sponsored ngo's. So there are also no public or social charities as you'd have in the USA. The systems here work differently. The people that don't have any shelter usually have a complex mental illness or so and run away from anything, or have not been in contact with a correct instance to get help. I see less people sleeping in the streets over the years and that's a good thing. And no, GoFundMe is not a thing here. It is pretty ironic that a country that doesn't want to 'share' the medical costs by the people, have a system where people have to beg others for help, to share the costs. It's sad. To be honest, a lot of Europeans see the USA as the richest third world country on the planet. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is just too big.

    • @johaquila
      @johaquila Рік тому

@@Ohjeezno I guess ScottMcLure's comment was a bit impressionist. Both Ireland are the Caiman Islands are known for thriving based on parasitic business models.
The Caiman Islands together with other places such as the Channel Islands and London form a network of jurisdictions that make it easy and legal to hide the owners of companies at low cost. The owners use this so that nobody asks where the money comes from with which they are buying these companies (could be drugs, could be a bank robbery, could be 20% of the money a European state paid to a developing country, ...) and so that they don't have to pay tax. When the EU began to seriously crack down on this, suddenly Brexit was a big topic.
For some companies the above trick doesn't work. Ireland has them covered. Big international concerns such as Microsoft and Facebook make sure to have their main seat for tax and data protection purposes in Ireland. Ireland obviously profits from this by getting some tax from them. Ireland pays for this by making it very easy for these companies to dodge most of their taxes, some even legally, and by having a data protection office that is so tiny and understaffed as to be equivalent to no data protection enforcement at all.
(Luxembourg offers a similar service for companies such as PayPal that want to offer banking services while not following the rules for that. For example just not giving people their money if they don't feel like it.)
As the EU is beginning to crack down on the first type of abuse and London isn't even in the EU's common market any more, European companies and individuals that want to use such services now use a different marketplace. There was talk of London's role being taken over by Amsterdam. I don't know, but it seems likely that the Netherlands are setting up an Ireland-style grift in this context.

Interesting discussion about what actually made people more aware of other countries and what really happens there.
From own experience, Internet as a whole did change this substantially from the moment on that it was available to essentially everyone. I instantly researched topics from media that were simply not available before, or took weeks to get. Newsgroups, internet forums (until today), international chats, and, as maybe the biggest factor for me: UA-cam. UA-cam really took over, what people used TV for, when it gets to more information that is more in-depth as the news. And especially, since everyone can use it as a creator. IMO, from the standard social media, FB turned out to be more on the regional level in the end, for simple practical reasons, Instagram wanted to take over, but pictures are not, what makes you interact on a deeper level most of the time, and Tiktok is not that established in older generations and turns to be the twitter of videos. Short, sometimes much too short, and often very superficial.
I mean, there is a reason you guys thought of a YT channel to put out your thoughts, right? 🙂
This video was a nice one. But the title was somewhat misleading? It was more about spontaneous immediate reactions to some facts about American life. But well, sometimes the looks say it all. There are so many f*d up things in the American lifestyle that we Europeans have a really hard time to wrap our heads around, it's crazy.
Brian shortly mentioned it, and I found it very accurate: In general, Americans as people are mostly seen quite positive over here. This may be, because being friendly is a huge part of your culture. IMO, this is a kind of necessity in a society that does not provide what most people in other countries consider the basics of social security. In the US sometimes even your life can depend on having lots of friends and family, e.g. when it comes to medical bills or other, ehm, catastrophes. I know an American who survived a horrible bus accident where he and his wife got horrible injuries, and they were in coma for years and both woke up again. Like a miracle. The medical bill of both were literally millions of US dollars and all their possessions were already sold and liquidated, and if the city they lived in did not provide them with a house to somehow start a new life, which was more like charity than social security, they would have ended up on the streets (or even worse). But they were very social people before and very respected and everyone knew them.
In Europe, you are actually taken care of at least on a good basic level, no matter how people think of you on a personal level. Germans are known for being very honest about their opinions, even if this hurts other people (esp. from cultures like the US). Danish people are very nice, but can be very grumpy or rude as well, compared to Americans. In both countries, being extremely positive is not always seen as a good thing, because it can be dishonest or hinders things that do not work from being fixed. In the US on the other hand, it is probably mandatory to not get depressive from the many issues in society, that are always told to be "in the process of fixing", but actually are never fixed ...
So, for Europeans, Americans, may they be a bit louder, a bit more superficial, a bit too positive ( 🙂). are still seen as refreshingly nice and friendly and quite funny people on a personal level, easy to come in contact with, easy to handle, nice to have around and being friends with.
the USA on a country and society level with all of it's issues - whole different thing...
I think it is very important to know that. American tourists and expats can sometimes be very confused about this, maybe because of the patriotism and because they identify themselves much more with their country than other nations. Criticism towards the US is not automatically criticism towards the American people.

I once had a ruptured appendix, in the US I would have had to sell my kidney to afford it. Or the insurance would have increased my rate until I shit myself 💩
In Austria parental leave with full payment is 12 months. Another 8 months at 75% of salary. In Austria EVERY employee (who is not self-employed) gets 14 salaries, even Cleaners or Mc Donald's employees, anyone! One additional salary in June (Vacation bonus) and one in November (Christmas bonus).
28 days paid vacation, if you add the bank holidays then it's 35 to 38
Of course, no company would do all that voluntarily. It is the law in Austria. The companies don't really complain because productivity, sick leave and loyalty to the company is so much higher than if these benefits were not there.
As these "benefits" have existed since the early 19s, these comparisons could only be made internationally, not nationally....

Also I find it fascinating that it costs so much to have a child the childcare is so expensive in the US so many young people are putting off having children or not even bothering. But then the very people who seem to be happy with those costs are also anti immigration. Falling birthrates, an aging population and an attempt to stop most immigration just who do these people in the right are going to do the work in the future? There was a gofundme for a friend of mine who wanted treatment from a very specific facility outside of the country. Often even that can be covered by insurance, especially if it's in the EU, but this particular one wasn't, so she had to pay for it herself.
Otherwise gofundme seems mostly things like business ideas, where people need to pay upfront to produce something. Stuff like that.
Funerals are not super cheap or anything, but funeral insurance is pretty common afaik, and fairly cheap. That may just be my bubble though. But it helps that embalming isn't really a thing, and absurd coffins that are basically nuclear explosion proof aren't really a thing. That does reduce costs by quite a bit. The only thing that can raise costs is how elaborate you want the service to be. In my area it's pretty common to have at least some kind food and coffee afterwards. Mostly sandwiches, but salads, soups, and other warm dishes aren't uncommon either. So that can drive up the cost if it's a big funeral.

From my European point of view (Frenchman living in Belgium, close to the German border) the worst part of American life is indeed that getting sick or sending your children to college might push you into debts and poverty. And the availability of guns and the number of deaths by shooting (12 times as many as in Europe, proportionally) is sheer madness. This being said, I've been to the U.S. twice, one month each time (New England, then California and Arizona), and nobody has threatened me, I did not feel in dangere anywhere, and I mostly met nice and friendly people there; of course as a tourist I was not confronted to the hardships of regular life (like in any country) and I did not visit the "bad" places.

The average American with a decent job can afford health insurance. Going bankrupt for medical bills only happens to people who have a medical emergency when they are uninsured. I pay about $300 a month for good health insurance that covers all my medication's, doctor visit's, dentist, ect... Also in the USA college is only necessary for certain jobs there are many promising career paths that do not require college education. Skilled tradesmen like plumbers, electricians, carpenters, construction workers, and mechanics are in high demand in the USA and you can get an apprenticeship for free for these jobs and employers will take time to teach you the skills needed to do the job and you get paid while learning. Also I think that the vacation time and benefits that European's get would be abused by American's. My little brother recently worked for a European company here and was given a month of paid time off and sick leave. He did not like his boss and ended up getting another job somewhere else but just told his boss at the European company he was sick or on vacation for an entire month while he was working at the other job so he could get two paychecks from both jobs until the European company finally realized he wasn't coming back lol.

Regarding TikTok: Some European countries also thinks about banning it. But it's much more about personal data protection and protection of the youth, not because of the content. And I like that they care about that. Also, you are aware it belongs to a Chinese company, and that the content outside of China is completely different to that what Chinese people can see? (--> censorship) Regarding GoFundMe: you see it more now but not as much as in the US. And it's not often about healthcare costs but pretty diverse causes. There are also other donation platforms. About the high costs in the US and the missing outcry about that, I think that's also because of the highly individualistic lifestyle and mindset much Americans have. In documentaries you often hear "why should I pay for other people's healthcare?". Which makes me sad. European insurance systems are built more on the thought of a community of solidarity.

About guns. In Czech republic's constitution there is the right to carry firearms, but their gun related crimes and deaths are 1/7 than US... why?
Because to have a licence to use your consitutional right to carry a gun you have to:
1- Pass a psycological test (once a year)
2- Pass an earing test (once every 5 years)
3- Pass a visual test (once every 5 years)
4- Pass a gun using test hitting a target 4 times on 5 from 10 meters with a gun and from 25 meters with a rifle
5- Have a completely clean criminal sheet (always... if you get a sign on your criminal sheet, your licence is removed)
6- Pass a law exam about guns: storing guns, storing ammonition, place where guns aren't admitted (schools, courts, public offices and so on)
The fact that citizens have right to carry guns doesn't mean that any mentally unstable, half blind and deaf, untrained and ignorant criminal should be allowed to carry one
It's not that hard to understand
