I have 5 cats that would disagree with the assertion that cats don't crave affection and attention from their owners. They DO crave it, but on their own schedule (like 3 am). Also, while cats may seem to be ignoring you, in reality they have a near-perfect 360-degree scan of their local environment. When they seem like they are "ignoring you" it's because they are very comfortable with you being in their space and feel relaxed enough to tune out a bit. It's a compliment, really.

    • @EdsterIII
      @EdsterIII Рік тому +99

It's not that they don't always "crave" attention. Many times it's that they only allow it when THEY want it. Some cats will be "independent" BUT when they want some love, they will demand it.

My cat wants my attention when I'm working. But she doesn't want to be held or be pet she just wants me to acknowledge her existence and agree with her that her life is so hard. And make sure she has food even though I know full well she has food

I think the best compliment a vet ever gave me was one time a vet said she could tell my 2 kitties were handled with love. They purred for her and gave her affection, so I think maybe that's why she said it? If you have affectionate kitties, that's likely a good sign you care for them with love. I have dog rescues right now, one of which is *terrified of kittens,* so no kitties here at the moment. They are scary though. She was walking past a crate of sleeping kittens piled in a heap. As soon as she sniffed them, they all opened their eyes and hissed. It looked like one creature with many eyes and fangs. SO SCARY! I'm now convinced this is why baby animals sleep huddled together like that, not just for warmth, but also for that freaky many-eyed monster thing being a darn good defense!!

We had a female calico that would respond to verbal commands. If she was headed to an off-limits area, all I would have to say is ...."Don't go in there". And she would lovingly obey. At times she would behave more human-like than cat-like. I remember the slow blinks, the purring, her wanting lap time and drooling when rubbed behind the neck. And most of all, being there constantly beside me when I lost my son and she knew I was grieving. Got her as a stray. Best pet I ever had. She was truly a family member.

I agree that the best cat (have had a few different kittys over the years) I ever had was also a stray. It just seemed that he (Moo kitty because his color was white with black spots like a cow) chose me instead of me choosing him. At first he would come around when I was on porch smoking. After a few days/week or so he would already be hanging out on the porch waiting for me.

Some cats are extremely smart and learn human words. My cat Buck, l taught him hot and cold and almost all his body parts. Had to call his nose his snout because nose sounds too much like the word no. We would watch my laptop as l showed him squirrels, chipmunks and birds. l would tap on his shoulder and recite his name then do the same to the picture on the screen of whatever animal He began to know what's Good and what's bad, or dangerous and much more.

My cat, Jaguar passed away almost 3 years ago, raised him since he was a kitten, live to be 19 years old, would come to his name, and I would whistle and he would also come to his name Jag, of course I miss him dearly, he would follow me almost everywhere I went, would even heal when I was walking, he would greet me everyday when I came home from work, would actually hop on the hood of the car. When he passed away, I had him cremated. I have never had another pet sense Jag pass away, with so many fond memories of Jag after so many years, I don't want to go through that heartbreak again, but he will always be in my thoughts and my heart ❤️💓

Brian we first got a tom we called Sylvester and he was mine, climbing into top bunk to sleep with me, I bawled my eyes when at 2 he passed from feline lukemia, some months later there were kittens in an unused chicken and brought home what turned out be 12lbs of fluffy gentle Maine Coon Arthur, I wrestled with and had 4 paws and claws around my arm and thought he didn't like me, turns out that was play time for him, he had the lukemia too another sad but sweet memories, we had a stray Lance, who found us as young adult and lived to be 18, during his I had a French Bleu, Chartreaux cat just weaned come up to me at work and put in my car to be warm and safe, he sat on lap while driving and he had me, he was one who like riding in the car, he lived in easy harmony with lance till he was 18 again I cried for all my babes, I take in the ones who come to me and I am thankful for all that have joined our family, If you're lucky maybe a kitten pushed away from mommas weaning may find it's way to you looking for and come join you, I know it hurts but I hope you find one coming around or just look for the sign, Free Kittens

Hey Brian - I lost my cat about 10 years ago, not getting another one I said
Well 2 weeks ago a friend introduced me to their new rescue kitty she got for her other cat, needless to say they don’t get along
My friend named her Vivienne after Vivienne Westwood (her other cat is Coco)
Well let’s just say when I found out the cats name was originally Gizmo then that was it sealed (was my cats name) and the little Gizmo has deduced I am hers
She moved in a week ago and has totally changed my life, she is absolutely life changing
She is a little one year old Tonkinese 🥰😻

I have had two dogs and 1 cat that have passed away. My cat Taz I called a dog cat. He grew up with a dog and sounds just like Jag. Now I have 3 cats, and they are awesome. They needed a home and I gave them one. Don't be afraid to get another cat. They will help fill the void in your heart and there is a cat out there that needs a loving home. I know the pain of a pet passing away. It is a part of their life and really sucks. But just think how you can give a great home and happiness to a new cat that needs love and affection.

I’m minding my neighbor’s cats. I’m just learning about cat behavior but also I don’t like being scratched lol. They have three cats, one of them I pet then lightly scratched my leg just playing around but I thought she was being aggressive. I walked away and then she hopped on a chair and when I looked at her, she hissed at me probably mad because I walked away from her 😂.
Their oldest cat likes being pet but I think I was doing too much but I didn’t know at the time, she was meowing and then she’d turn her backside towards me, she did that three times and I kept petting her (not aggressively) and then she scratched my hand. She didn’t hiss or continue attack. But I walked away and she was staring at me probably wondering where I was going lol.
I can’t lie as a human I felt hurt on the inside. 😂

my last cat had the cutest "wow you're finally home!" reaction - he would stare at me for a moment, then wag his head around wildly, then stand up and "reach" up my leg. SO freaking cute. All my cats have had some kind of positive reaction when I come home though.
My current cat usually meets me at the door for head butts and quick pick up + cuddle, but has a funny twist if I have been gone too long: he just scowls at me then turns away. This has only happened once when I had to spend the night in the hospital (he had a cat sitter who came to feed and check on him). He was realllly not happy about it.

Same thing with the command thing. My aunt's cat will obey gestures and tone of voice if it is emphatic. She will get down from anywhere if I point to the floor and won't go outside even if they door is left open. She's still obeying from when she was scolded for going out when she was younger.

for our 2 furrbabies, we have multiple litter boxes. i noticed they are much happier with that.
    - i have boxes for them to chew on and tear up. when it gets too tore up, i get a new one.
    - cats do not crave solitary. even in the cat colony, they prefer a friend. so even the most hardened of the alphas, ive seen will come running for a chance to have fun, get some pats, get some treats, and maybe find a comrade that wont try to eat them.
    - even my indoor cats behave differently when they are with a friend, then when they are alone. my Samantha jo who is 14, she came with another cat. years ago when the cat died, she was beside herself, and so lonely. she became clingy, and couldnt spend any time by herself. she would just cry, and act like she was getting sick. we thought she would die alone. we got her a new friend 2 weeks later, and she was fine again, and happy with her new partner in crime. theyve been together for 7 years.

They act as if they're not trying to get your attention, while trying to get it so you start petting them.
One of my cats will follow me around, but with a bit of a delay. So if I go into a new room, they'll wait a second, then follow me, as if they're hiding the fact they're following me.

I live out in the sticks and after buying a house, the previous owner left a cat in a box. The cat was and is a bit wild but my curious question is~ Has anybody else experienced her kittens or the cat itself being able to actually move so quickly on occasion to disappear for brief moments? Like running but at the center point, they are not seen. I have had many cats over the years as a senior but my little (big) black panther as she seems to act like is pretty dang cool. as all cats are~ When Momma taught the kittens to use the litter box, it was quite musical and they lined up to repeat until she gave her approval.

(Tiny kittens, 6-8 weeks old) One time, my big male decided to use a kitten-sized box. Apparently his bladder was very full. I kept repeating "Don't run it over. Don't run it over." small tip for those newer to cats or dealing with rescues and ferals. Don't expect them to like you right away like a dog would. I've found if i set up a safe and comfy place for them to be near me in each room i frequent works best (a cat bed on your night stand, another cat bed in your office, etc). if they want to be in the same room as you, they do enjoy your company. cats often need more time to feel secure and happy in their environment, much like an angry teenager, don't smother them but find smaller ways to make them realize you are there for them.

Good point. Cats have very intelligent hearing. Whatever Ben Britten music I played on record or CD player (except 'serenade for tenor horn & strings' which is uncharacteristic BB, & mellifluous) Razumovsky, my calico & white cat, would be furious. she hated it so much - Shout her miaows til I switched off Britten. I don't like BB now. But she loved the countertenor & tenor voices singing folk songs & Purcell, Dowland, Handel songs, Her fave was 'I will give my Love an apple' & when I sang it she'd purr as hard as she could. She was named after Beethoven's 'Razumovsky string quartets.

In the beginning the horse was taught and wiped into becoming a loser while running in all different directions. When his new trainer got a hold of him he gently directed Seabiscut to simply be a horse and again. For humans...Finding Christ in yourself connects us back to our Devine substance!

For example, she has noticed that 1) the fascinating red dot comes from the laser pointer 2) she can't activate the pointer on her own 3) if she bothers a human enough, they will eventually resort to the laser to distract her. She also tends to chew on computer cables when bored. I've tried cat repellent, anti nail biting lacquer, and foil tape on the cables, to no avail.

Our cat treats different people differently, as far as "craving attention". With her owner, she's the typical "aloof, can't let her see me being desperate" type. With me, she'll constantly climb into my arms to demand pets. But if Momma gets up to leave the room, Tiny Tina will jump away to go follow/inspect, will wait outside the bathroom door, or otherwise show that she's worried to everyone but Momma. If she leaves the house, Tina will be absolutely all over me, acting like she's been abandoned and is desperate for attention and love. When Momma gets back, she launches herself from my arms, goes to the door, waits for it to open... and then walks off. We joke that she sees my roommate as "Momma" or "Owner", and me as a "sibling" or "fellow pet", but I know my roommate feels bad and jealous about the affection the cat openly shows me.
Sadly, Tiny Tina went missing last week. The back door wasn't properly latched, and the wind blew it open. We think she pushed past the screen door and it closed behind her, trapping her outside, and she wandered off in search of shelter and got lost. She was acting perfectly normal around 3 AM, but when it was time to feed her at 10 AM, she was nowhere to be found. We've been calling every shelter and vet we can find, have reported her to the police and the Humane Society, have been putting up posters, have set up a couple "shelter boxes" with towels and my shirts and her shed fur, have been trying to keep food and water available (which is difficult with the cold)... We're really scared. She's never been allowed outdoors, so we're hoping her instincts will be enough to keep her safe until she can find her way back to us.
We've even gotten prank calls and scammers contacting us, though we've gotten a couple kind words of encouragement as well. If you're ever putting up posters about a lost animal, be aware that there are some evil people who will try to take advantage of you. They'll claim to have found your pet, and they'll want you to call and give them a "verification number" that you get by text, but it's actually them trying to break into your accounts. Ask them to text a picture of your animal, it'll be obvious if it's the same one from your poster or a stock photo of another animal.

Wanting to drink from the faucet, for me, would also signal that they're not happy with the condition of their water bowl and that you need to be changing it out more often (at least daily if not twice daily) to keep it fresh and appealing.
The two behaviors that most puzzle me is sticking their tongue partway out of their mouth and the random meows that seem to mean nothing (almost as if the cat is just announcing itself as it comes into the room--I've seen that!) and yet they're looking at you like they've just asked a question and are confused as to why you're just sitting there. Not always being able to figure out what your cat wants can be one of the biggest frustrations as a cat owner.

I think my cat is just fascinated with my bathroom. I was able to train her to not jump on-top of the kitchen counter with a spray bottle, so I know cats can learn behavior, but I don't really have a problem with her going into my bathroom besides her licking the sink. She likes to go in the shower too and lay down, lol, I'm assuming because the tile is cold. One time I was laying on the couch and heard the toilet flush, which was strange since I was home alone, so I got up and sure enough she was on the toilet seat flushing the toilet. Couldn't help but laugh at how scared I was. Even though I know the spray bottle would work I don't have the heart to do so over something so minuscule, and just let her do her thing or try to shut the door. I have two cat; one who is very selectively affectionate, and one who is my literal shadow (which works out cause's he's all black lol). If I'm out of his sight for more than 5 seconds, he HAS to follow me to see where I went. If I'm in my room with the door shut, he's laying right outside of the door until I come out again. I've never had a more friendly cat before in my life lol. My other cat is textbook definition of "I want pets, but only when I say so, and I want EXACTLY 5". Oh you gotta love the duality of owning multiple cats

I believe that cat chattering is like "bird calling" or like the way human hunters use a duck call or a turkey call...
    I think it's a hunting strategy...
I've had many cats & I have rescued over 30 cats over the years and my opinion is based on my observations thru those several years...
    So, that's my 2 cents...lol 😸

So, I am at my dads house right now, and I think our cat, Mina, understands English. I was drawing her but she was a lil turkey cat, and I said, "aw, I can't draw her paws" and then she got up. What-
Another weird thing that cats do is rubbing their head against you and things. (I'm only a few mins in the video), but it's because they're making their marks on stuff. If they rub their heads on you, they're telling other cats that you are their human.
My cats lick/bite cardboard and tape sometimes, I kinda love watching it. They don't "eat" the tape, they just lock it. Idk why they like it-

Wouldn't it make more sense if the "bird noises" were meant to lure prey that's somewhere out of reach into moving closer? Most might not, but I've seen at least one cat who distinctly changes the sounds it makes depending on the sound of the bird it's stalking. Even in the wild, I'm sure there are times when birds land in places a cat knows it can't get to easily even if there's no window in the way, so I feel like the instinct to make those noises would have evolved to potentially help them in that situation.

I thought the same thing when they mentioned "Bird Calls." One cat, the birds seemed to actually answer when it made the 'bird calls'. Of course, the bird may have been saying "Uh, yeah, no buddy. I can see you clearly and I ain't coming down there."

I just rescued two kittens off of the streets, and the girl kitty likes to make biscuits and suckle her brothers teets. Its cute, but its super sad because i know they were weaned way too early. Their momma probably passed away while they were out in the streets. They're the sweetest cats I've ever met and deserve the world. They're also super affectionate and very vocal with me. I am so lucky they chose me 😇❤

Thanks for cat's strange behaviors! I've had kitten/cats most of my 70 plus life and have witnessed many of those strange behaviors! The last time my late beloved orange and white Tiger male cat brought me something it was my cellphone since he was an indoor cat. He also used to fetch bottle caps when he was a young cat like a Golden Retriever would a ball and he was as loyal as a dog! He also watched a whole half hour of Animal Planet since he was very smart, too! How about when a cat licks you and then takes a quick bite out of you? A real WTF? moment! LOL Enjoy those precious moments since they don't last forever! Lost my two beloved cats in 2020 plus my middle daughter to this deadly Covid, but have gotten spiritual signs from them on the Other Side since it's all energy! Keep the faith and watch for those signs from the Other side, stay open! "A closed mind is a good thing to lose", the truth!

We have a cat who does crave attention. On his terms! He will actually come up two stairs, then clearly lets me know I need to follow ( me thinking he needs food or wants to go outside). He leads me all the way downstairs and then jumps on the couch where he planned he would be petted by me. Or he does want to eat but wants to be petted while eating.

4:35 "Try putting a bell on her collar". Yeah, okay. Go ahead and try. Did that to our cat once when I was growing up. Got lots of teeth and claws for it. Then she immediately bolted out of the house into the backyard and came back a half hour later with no collar or bell on. Never found out how she got it off or where she left it. That was the end of that stupid idea. For the rest of her life she hunted as she pleased, and kept my bed warm at night. Good deal.

I have had cats all my life. Never once I felt like being ignored. They are actually very social creatures, and they do crave human attention and affection, as well as that of other cats. I feel like they you don't have a good interaction with your cat, there's simply something wrong, either the cat has anxieties from previous experiences or you're doing something wrong. Any creature will eventually love being loved and nourished and cats are no exception
