Im ascend from dead red. this is very good mate i feel like I'm back in 1994 in the studio. I don't have the arrangement no more. it was done on a commodore amiga using music x.
UNTOLD LOVE, brother! It wasn't just Dred Bass. What Kind Of World (especially the remix), Real Love, so many BIG tunes that have brought me and countless others joy that can't be put into words. I did write a post - that somehow got lost - about how influential Dred Bass was and how I'd started producing in 1994 when Dred Bass was the new hot ting and I was blown away by the quality of the production. MAJOR SALUTE! I'd love to interview you for the channel if you fancy reminiscing about oldskool production. AMIGA! Nice! I had the A600 back in 94.
Hey Lee, thank you for the amazing music over the years, I've wanted to ask for ages, is there any way to get the Dredbass - World Of Music CD? It's really expensive on Discogs and I can't find it anywhere else, I would love some of the tunes off that, big up!
I remember hearing this at my first rave Juice on Hastings Pier 1994. Couldn't believe what I was hearing. Total mind meltdown. It got played about 5 times that night and the place went OFF!!!
The 'Metallic' sound on the Amen is simple phasing. Caused by having a duplicate of the same midi track playing at the same time. The sampler would then try to play 2 triggers of the same note at the same time causing a kind of dopler effect sounding like a phaser.
@@OwenTheGeek I believe the varied pitch sounds were done using the different algorithms of time stretching within the Akai samplers. By changing the cycle length you could get varying pitches. Then using a tracker or sequencer to play these re-pitched sounds. Early jungle was all about the Akai and Trackers. It was a much different workflow from our modern times. It is interesting that you can listen to these old tunes and sort of decipher which tracks were using a a sequencer (Early Cubase) vs. a tracker (Octamed). But, they were all running samplers. I'd love to get an old Amiga to run my S-5000, but I'm pretty stuck in more modern ways....
This is one of the all time Jungle classics!! you heard it everywhere!!! As a 15 year old when it came out, this and many other tunes (Renegade Snares, Terrorist etc) changed my life. Thanks for the memories!!!!!
When this dropped for the first time it sent the scene into a buzz. Nobody had heard a bass like that. One of those landmark tracks that changed things going forward. So funny, it sounded like something advanced and futuristic, and it's just a bass in reverse.
Yeah, I remember hearing it for the first time in 1994. The intro sucked me in, then the bass drop blew my brains out. Stone cold classic. The original 94 remixes are both special too!
I think this is possibly one of my favourite videos on UA-cam! The combination of one of my favourite tunes ever and seeing you recreate it so accurately and with modern techniques etc is amazing! Thanks for the upload! Hopefully you'll do some more recreations in the future?
Hi Owen, You did it, congratulations. Still, the 'magic' of this track will forever be burnt into my soul. Dead dred, created something truely special, intelligent, and perfectly-right for that single moment in history. How, exactly they created this masterpiece, given the tools at the time, should be marvelled at, and celebrated. This music was created, through the mind of a creator, who envisioned a future. It's like reading versus writing. A recreation is a reading of the track, this process is completely different to writing the track.
@@peaceyvibes I wish!!! I considered doing the Origin Unknown remix but the difficulty of reproducing their sound design would not be worth the time and effort.
@@BFMMusic there'll be a few more jungle/oldskool recreations, yes, but I can't say when as some of them require more sample hunting. Might clone some more modern tracks in other genres too, but that probably wouldn't appeal to this crowd. We'll see...
Loved watching this. Great to hear how such a classic was made and where the samples came from. Brilliant job mate. Would love to hear some other classics remade
I'd forgotten when I made the video that it wasn't common knowledge. I discovered it totally by accident years ago, just cos I knew what Dred Bass sounds like in reverse and then I recognised it when I was browsing through the FM CD, so I chucked it in the sampler...
Well impressive mate, really enjoyed this. The Acid Bass sample from the Future Music CD instantly reminded me of Lord of the Null Lines - Hyper on Experience. Would love to see your clone of that Classic! 😉
It's actually the Foul Play remix which it reminded me of, this part ua-cam.com/video/MC4yCPbdbT4/v-deo.html - Sounds similar enough to jog my memory anyway. I noticed Lee Smith (Ascend) commented on here, how awesome is that? Keep up the good work dude, quality content!
I gotta say this is an absolutely amazing clone/recreation of the Dred Bass tune. It's pretty much identical to the original, you did an incredible job man. The only one thing I would say is slightly off is the slope on the reverse bass, which there needs to be less off so the sound is more instant. It would probably just need a bit removed from the front of the sample after reversing it so there's less silence when you trigger it. Apart from that it's amazing.
Subbed immediately, this blew me away, I used to have all the Future Music sample discs, and never knew this fave track of mine used them, would love a cloned version of Warning, Firefox 4tree,
Incredible remake, btw. It literally sounds exactly like the original. Great work. I was also part of Back 2 Basics, under the name Chimera. I made "Deeper Life", if you remember that 🙂
They are on there, yes, but that's because the FM CD has excerpts from other popular sample CDs, including the one with the amen and including the one with the dead dread vox...
great video. I'm pretty sure the way the "metallic" effect on the amen break was done in a hardware sampler by layering two of the same notes together at exactly the same point. Because MIDI can't actually cause two notes to start at exactly the same time, the sampler would play the sample twice but with one instance starting very shortly after the other. Using a very short delay creates exactly the same effect, but back in the day that would have been much less readily available a tool.
That would be the obvious way to get that sound, but there are many more ways. Doing it the obvious way wouldn't allow you to produce the repeated pitch pattern as heard in Dred Bass.
That Future Music sample CD... was that the same one that 90% of the samples for Valley of the Shadows were taken from too? Or was that a different magazine?
+Owen Palmer (Owen The Geek) not sure what rumours you're talking about...but all the samples for Valley are on there. I've got it. the bells, Lynn Collins think etc.
