The "black riot stab" is actually something called the "train lead", it's a sample of a train horn and it originally came from the disk set that came with the Emulator II.
What's really wonderful about this video is how much more information we have in 2020 (and beyond) about classic tracks and classic samples. I appreciate the effort put in by Luke, although off the mark there's some fun cross-sampling here. But the root of many of these, Stravinksy and Fairlight, etc, which in turn were recorded and resampled and digitised into soundbanks... that's the beautiful complexity of our electronic music culture. So again, while not accurate, it's a wonderful reference and creative reflection all the same. Thanks for putting this together, some great memories (and some PTSD from waiting what felt like HOURS back then for midi sysex sample transfer when the floppy disk failed!).
that's good on modern technology but go back to the days of amiga and atari when you had to spend hours chopping ripping and sampling... look up octomed..and like others have said the sounds came from sound libraries some where free with some magazines and mostly programed into old skool synths like Roland w30 for example. good bit of kit there but doesn't explain fully the true roots of those sounds..
Video title : Origins of the Rave stabs. Video content : Show the origins of those stab sounds used in “rave music”. I think there is nothing wrong here.
@@luapmartin yes, but I don’t really understand what you mean. Like, are you making fun of what they think rave music is, or are you just one of those people that put quotation marks around everything.

Hey guys there's nothing in the description mentioning synths. This video's is obviously aimed at fans of Rave music. Fans of rave music would generally understand that alot of that type of music was constructed from reappropriation and sampling existing records rather than 'raw' synth programming, so as such, to people interested in the production techniques of guys that made rave tracks, the description is pretty spot on in my opinion. A rave producer at the time wouldn't have necessarily cared less which synths were originally recorded only which recording was sampled.
Or to put it another way... if you clicked on a video titled 'Origin Of The Amen Break', would you expect a rundown on the brand and micing techniques of the drum kit played in the original recording session? Or would you expect to be shown which record it appeared on and was sampled from? :)
I found out the Inner city stab several years ago. Listening to it now in retrospect, it sounds so damn obvious it's unbelievable. And what a revelation it was. Great sound, always liked that sound :-)
I asked Carl turner (bizarre inc) and he says that is legit for playing with knives. Can't vouch for the rest though. We were sampling the feck out of everything back then though.
good work, top old skool sample geekery :) I have another one for you, the "Rhythm Section" stab... bear with me... the source is Silver Bullet - Undercover Anarchist (Push to the Limit mix) Silver Bullet- Undercover Anarchist (Push To The Limit Mix) the stab is a short section of around 18 seconds in on the video. Check out Shoot the Moon - Technophobia - Shoot The Moon - Technophobia (Tuff Mix) which not only samples the stab from the Silver Bullet tune but the break as well. Rhythm Section probably sampled Shoot the Moon for their 'Comin on Strong' tune and then it became a fairly well used rave stab...
There weren't vst and sample packs back then. They were sampled from records, mostly reggae, hip hop and classical. He shouldn't have labelled it 'origins' none of these are the origins.
Nice vid, good to see im not the only one whose doing Origins of Rave stab vids. The Black Riot stab is actually off It's Not Too late To Dub by Sequal. I've done a few vids showing you where rave samples have come from including the Urban Shakedown, Some Justice stab :)
yes but which synths were used to create the sounds originally? sampling a record and then grabbing the audio is only showng that process. we can all do that. you need to rename the video as "ripping rave stabs and playing on a midi trigger" !
gnuttz1972 he's showing you where the artists of each of those rave tunes took their samples from originally. Hence the title fool. Rave stab origins...
How's knowing the particular controller going to help you find the origins of the stab? He's showing you what song the sound is sampled from, which part of the song specifically and how to play it. Closer to the origin than that is hard to get without video of the actual artist in the studio while they're taking the actual sample... and good luck finding that for relatively low-budget music from almost 30 years ago.
***** A synth and a controller are different things. The artists didn't sample anything they actually made the sounds on synths. What you are saying is the artists sampled themselves. I don't need to point out that that makes no sense.
does anyone know if some of this classic house where made by sampling chords directly from synth (JUNO, DX7 etc.) and then played with the pads of the MPC, like it is shown in the video? that would totally make sense to me though.
That stab at 2:04 about sounds like smd 1 b side and the stab for it’s just a feeling probably is (and of course we know it’s from playing with knives)

really cool stuff! but I am sometimes wondering where/how the original sounds came from. Old romplers perhaps sometimes... But I imagine some producers made their own hybrids from scratch - samples from old records and/or rompler stabs. Classic sounds!
The real original hit sample came from of course the fairlight , david vorhaus won a contest in linz austria in 1980 , cmi p vogel was there and vorhaus got a fairlight mk1 where he sampled the Orch sample (i think it was from a stravinsky suite) on to donate for the user library , the rest is history..
