- Jerry Cantrell dedicates Nutshell to Layne Staley and Mike Starr. A highlight of a great show. Sorry for the quality. I was trying to record, sing, and dance. TURN IT UP!!
You know, I see so much negativity about AIC, and Layne not being there, Layne's absence was something noone wanted, The band continuing on from Mike and Laynes time to now is a testament to the bands love and remembrance of their brothers, and William Duvall is doing absolute justice in spite of being constantly compared to Layne. I want AIC music for years to come, till were all old as hell, and our hearing aids dont pick up all the frequencies
You said that perfectly. Of course we’ll always love and miss Layne and Mike, but I hope AIC keeps making music. William is awesome. 🙏🏼☮️🕊
Exactly...i get tired of guys having to step in for legends, just to get shit on all the time.
Alice In Chains died when Layne Staley exited this earth. It’s not the same without him. They are not the same without him. Nobody wants a Lame Staley trying to sing Laynes lyrics. They should’ve just changed their name and started a new band everyone knows who they are and would of been successful after his death. Seems like a cover band to a lot of folks.
Layne was the soul of AIC, I just can't watch another person staying where he should stay ,singing songs written by Layne about his life and pain. I feel the same for The Queen, you can't make another person sing what Mercury sang.
I saw that singer dude at an event a few years back. He acted like a total diva. Maybe he was having a bad day, don’t know, but I wouldn’t spend a dime supporting him after that. I’ll stick with my memories of seeing the real deal at the Clash of the Titans tour, back in 91.
I hate how people hate on William Duval just because he is not Layne. He is still a great performer and at least he’s keeping the band alive.
There will never be another Layne ever they are still a great band
Yes that was a different version of still a most amazing band.
Jerry is really the one keeping the band alive
If Layne never existed and he was the lead singer from the beginning I would think this band was trash
@@cobborator cannot agree with you
William, not pretending to be anyone, just singing it the way it’s meant to be sung.
A fantastic vocalist and band member.
Well said. 100% agree.
100% after
agree
❤
Love him. 💕☮️
Dudes been in the band over 10 years and people still can't get over it.
17y actually. But it really won't ever stop, Sepultura suffers the same type of thing, and Derrick is their vocalist since 1998. When a vocalist replaces the former in a band and tries the best to emulate what the other did, people complain its fake, lame, etc. If it brings his own style to the mix, began the s*** talk with comparisons. I feel people generally aren't really interested in the music as they are interested in just "have" an opinion and fight for it. Lol
Can’t get over someone’s death Ahole!
It happened when Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen. The only guys who never got really got pooped on when they replaced former singers were Brian Johnson of AC/DC and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, but those were both in the very early 80s when people were more open minded about music and weren't so "team identified" as we are today.
This band should be in the Rock HOF. RIP Layne n Mike ❤
They will
100%
This is wild that they’re not in
❤
Look at the inductees this year. WTF?
If you don’t goosebumps from this song, I can’t trust you as a person
This song drives itself into your soul.
I do when Layne sung it, not this karaoke wanna be they got singing for them now.
How jerry can play this without tears streaming down his face has got to be tough 😢
Hes played it a gazillion times. Idk how they or anyone else can play same songs over and over without wanting to dive head first into an amp
@@mikeyj990ify😂😂 Right?! From the way Sean talks about playing Man In The Box you can see how they probably avoid playing some of what they think is all worn out. (Sorry I couldn't resist)
@@mikeyj990ify😂
I agree. I cry every time I hear this. 😢
@@mikeyj990ify agreed lol probably get to the point where you stop mourning and almost get to the point where you’re annoyed to play it
Great song and great performance. William isn't trying to replace Layne, but continue what we all love so much. A person has an end. Music is eternal.
Well said! ❤
We traveled to CA to see AIC in 2019. Tears were pouring down my face during this song - unexpectedly my 30 year old son noticed even though it was dark: he leaned over to comfort his mama and had a tear in his eye too. What a good guy. My husband and I raised him right. ❤
I've seen Alice in Chains twice with William Duvall & both times they were hypnotic. I've never heard another band as tight as them with vocal harmonies.
Absolutely agree! I saw them with Layne in Memphis right before he died, and it blew my mind how tight they were! Amazing harmony, and great musicianship by all!!
Go see Tool
I still believe since day 1 when Duvall was announced as the new vocalist that there would be a lot of negative feedback and largely because he's a Black dude. Nobody will admit it, and I for one think he was and is a great addition. Pretty sure we got some "Closet Nazi's" calling themselves AIC Fans....asswipes; every last one of them...
I guess you didn't see the Beach Boys 50th anniversary tour in 2012. Those boys could harmonize the ladies' panties off!
Jerry Cantrell is one of my favorite guitarist and vocalist. I have never heard anyone like him and Layne harmonize together the way they did. R.I.P. Layne & Mike.
Noone could ever replace Layne. These songs were sung from the deepest parts of the mind and heart. Duvall took an absolute impossible job and did better than anyone could ever have done. You can tell some lyrics are too soul touching for him to do. He's that respectful. Almost like he's embarrassed to even give it a try. So glad Duvall has stuck around. If God allowed me to go back and rescue one singer from death it would be Layne Staley. Man I miss his voice. I often think of when I hear them nowadays how he'd look, how he'd feel about our current world? How much music we really missed out on? But with that Jerry Cantrell is amazing and happy he's still around. I'm 40 but whenever I listen to AIC I go back to being 10 years old in the 90s when Grunge was at its peak and many lead singers from this time were still alive😢
well put
William isn’t Layne. But he ain’t bad. He’s actually pretty good and he’s way better than NOTHING. He RESPECTS Layne and gives it his ALL. Without William there wouldn’t be an AIC right now. Cut him some slack. RIP Layne.
Besides being a fan of the band, I've always frickin loved Jerry's tone and snarl...awesome guitarist
In some ways, underrated.
Dirt album, best tone I’ve ever heard
Layne would stop singing sometimes to push Jerry to sing more on lead vocals. Layne said many times how much he loved Jerry's vocals. It was the surviving AIC choice on how to move forward. I wish they had carried on with Jerry stepping into lead vocals. It wouldn't be him replacing Layne. Layne would be right beside him every performance. Rest in Peace Layne.
I agree with you
Spot on
You know you're shit bro! Respect!!!
Agree with you, all the respect for Duvall but he was a stranger and I don't like he singing songs written or sang by Layne.
Nice..⭐💯
I’ve seen them 3 times with Will and although he’s not Layne, he kills it everytime and Jerry is a legend. Nutshell is my favorite song and this rocked. Thanks for posting
You're welcome. You could feel that emotion from Jerry's solo.
I was in high school, when MTV was real, unplugged AIC was 🔥. Glad I seen them live in LA California…….
Jerry is a badass, that is just a fact. Thank you for being here bro and keeping it going. William does an excellent job. Glad to see you guys any time you get in my neck of the woods. Last time I saw you, this song was an instrumental jam and it was awesome. Im glad to hear the full version of the song again, it has always meant alot to me.
My thoughts exactly!! 🥃👍🏻
Every guy in this band is a national treasure
Losing Layne was devastating to all AIC fans no question. However, for them to continue on the way they have, keeps his memory alive and shows what I think is the ultimate respect. Much respect to William for staying true to the music but not trying to replace Layne. It’s a delicate balance but he does it well.
Jerry should have renamed the band. He is an ass.
A great song that gives the feeling of sadness, loneless, and yearning for Layne Staley.
You Rock Willy !!! Filling Layne’s shoes just fine 👍🏻
Sounds great! I miss Layne but William D is awesome as well! He does it in his own voice & takes inspirations from Layne but makes it his own voice.
Of all the AIC songs I think it’s this song that feels strange to hear anyone else sing. It was just way way to personal of all Laynes lyrics.
Love how William hits those high notes. Flawlessly
One of my favorite songs of all time.
William Duvall or whoever you put out there, no one will be satisfied. Doesn't matter if it's Aaron Lewis, who does a most excellent nutshell. Non will ever, ever , ever capture that pink haired moment on unplugged. I mean you are asking for the universe on that one. Duvall handled this most excellent.
This is so good. No one else will ever be just like Lane, but this is really excellent. I hope they play in North Texas some time soon.
I saw Jerry at Hershey years ago. We were in line waiting to get in. Jerry poked his head out the gate and I was like "is that Jerry Cantrell?" Star struck moment.
I've had the pleasure to see AIC several times over the years. They are one of my favorites.
CHEERS to ALL.....much love
Thank you so much. AIC 4 ever. Duvall is awesome. RIP Layne and Mike. 🎶 R.A. you rock ❤
It was a great show!
You may not have noticed. But In this clip is a huge reveal. Jerry reveals where the inspiration for the riff of Nutshell was co-opted from. Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs. He plays it then says that’s where it came from . This is huge.. first I’ve ever seen it
Thanks for the info!!
Listening to this for the first time. Looking out my window as the leaves, yellow and brown, fall from the trees and blow by. Took me back 30 years to when I bought Jar of Flies. Got me right in feelz. The kind that just linger.
Where did that time go?
A testimony to life goes on. I wish these guys the best. So much here built on Layne’s internal pain that is carries his presence to this day. It’s a shame he didn’t have the chance to enjoy his success. So much changes in your head as you get older.
I remember being a wee teen pounding this in my bedroom. Times have changed. But this song always hits me the same. Such a powerful and beautiful song
Seen Chains many times, original line up and current. Still fantastic. Shit happens in life but positives can still occur like this show and being able to enjoy the music. Thats what its about, the music snd experience. So get it while you can and dont complain or compare, just enjoy!!
Layne would 100% approve
This is a tribute to the brilliance that is Layne Staley
Self titled aic...listen to the lyrics. Explains laynes feelings for his band. Seditious at best
What a great song❤
A class act indeed. RIP Layne & Mike 💙🤘🏻✌🏻
Enjoyed the listen but it’s miles away from Laynes vocals…….
There’ll never be another Layne Staley!! He was/is a once in a lifetime vocalist!!!!!!!!!
Forever and SADLY missed…….
This band has even me so many emotions I never knew I had. ❤️
Jerry is the fkin mannnnnn
No one can ever be Layne, he was absolutely one of the most moving and powerful singers!! It’s still good to hear his songs in present time. Miss him ❤
At first glance, I thought Jerry was Greg Allman.😆❤️🤘
I needed this, thanks for sharing it. AWESOME!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for keeping it going Jerry! Will....good job...! Miss Layne like all real Gen x'rs. Thank you for your lovevof Alice and keep rocking.
I was there! It was a great show!
It's sounds beautiful God bless you Jerry Cantrell. May u find peace baby Jerry can can can Cantrell nice nice 😂😊❤
3rd favorite band of all time, right behind VH, then Pantera. Jerry, you’re amongst good company in my head and heart brother.
Man those have to be the greatest of all time in my book too man. VH is why my brother and I, and millions of other dudes ever picked up a guitar. Dime did the same for the next generation and as far as I am concerned, the last true guitar hero. I absolutely LOVE Jerry's guitar playing. He has as much feel as Gilmour and can apply precise speed while remaining expressive. You can truly feel the emotions Jerry's playing conveys and as far as I am concerned, the ability to do that is the top achievement a musician could strive for. Pure despair.
@@timcole421 Agree to all. Plus what EVH has done for the world of guitar and amplification design… has been unmatched before and after him so far. And unfortunately I believe we won’t see another (not in my lifetime anyway.)
@@intheshoptv Same man. Seeing both EVH and Dime live in some of their strongest years is something I feel incredibly blessed to get to experience. There simply isn't a comparison elsewhere.
But not seeing AIC when Layne was alive and doing well-ish is honestly my biggest live music regret.
@@timcole421ABSOLUTELY! In fact, I was younger and couldn’t get anyone to go to the VH tour back in the 90’s when AIC opened. I was incredibly pissed off. It was the only condition my parents had at the time… I could only go if someone came with. And nobody would so they wouldn’t let me go. Im 46 now and still irritated with my mom over that!!😂 Both bands were absolutely firing on all cylinders at that time. It killed me man.
@@HiddenCreekHomestead My first concert was at 15 and I had to lie and tell my parents I was staying overnight at a friends house. Which was partially true but we were also taking a 5hr round trip road trip I failed to disclose.
Worked out, only time I got to see Rush.
I cry every time I hear this song
Saw them warm up for VanHagar. One of the best seen..🎉
So lucky to have seen both vocalists and bassists. Once in 1992 and then again in 2018. 🤘🏼
I'm jealous. Never got to.
Whoever recorded this and said love you Layne you are a true hero of mine I love you. Everyone watching this lives your video. I can't wait to meet you in heaven you are such a beautiful person. Much love much love rip Layne let's enjoy music
This one will make my eyes water up every f’ng time. Ageless & Beautiful Song
I still expect Layne to come out and sit on a stool to sing...
That first riff he plays is robin tower bridge of sigh.
One of my favorite songs ever written
This song gets me every time i hear it
Thanks for sharing this. It's one of my absolute favorite songs ❤
What a fucking song and what a band fucking love these guys. Seen them in Portugal Australia and new zealand. Favorite band. So much variety in their catalog
The songs that Layne wrote are so incredibly powerful and personal and he sang them with such conviction. So many people were struggling at the time these songs came out and Layne's lyrics and public struggle allowed others an outlet to feel heard and not feel so alone. He was relatable and so real, and he gave my generation a voice. And while his end was something none of us ever wanted, I'd be willing to bet it's helped others get clean. I'd also like to say that William stepped into some impossible shoes. I don't say this because of his voice or his position in the band. I'm sure he's an incredible singer and the live shows are fantastic. I say this because there will be some AIC fans that just never accept him. By keeping the original band name and hiring a new lead singer, it just gave the appearance of Layne being replaced. For me, it was Layne's passion behind the lyrics that made the songs he sang so relatable. He was not just telling a story, he was telling his story. A story that a generation could relate to. I believe this a concept that Layne understood, which is why he told Jerry he thought he should sing the lead on Rooster. He told him it was his story to tell. Like this song for example.... Nutshell is Layne. Nobody can sing Nutshell with the power and conviction Layne had because it's not their story. It's not relatable the way it was with Layne. So I don't believe all the negativity that's directed at William is because William's voice isn't up to par or even because he is the lead singer of AIC. It's just because Layne is not.
I want to edit my comment to say that I know Layne didn't write all of the songs. Him and Jerry were a powerhouse and wrote incredible songs and music together....and Jerry still does. (I miss their harmonies so much!) I was just referring to the reason why I believe some people don't want to accept William.
I can’t do it. I have nothing against Duvall personally, but AIC is AIC because of Layne. I don’t care if someone disagrees, it won’t change my mind. Jerry should have renamed the band, instead of cashing in on Layne’s death. Layne brought the name with him and imo AIC died with him. I will never purchase a single AIC thing after 2002. I’m a loyalist. ✌️
Also, not changing the name brought many problems for Layne’s family. They weren’t getting cuts of sales and stuff, and ya can’t tell me Jerry didn’t know that was happening.
@@gsmom3883 I agree completely.....especially about the name. I love Layne era AIC. Like u, I have absolutely nothing against William, but AIC to me will always be Layne, Jerry, Mike Starr and Sean. I understand Jerry wanting to continue to perform, but I absolutely believe the group name should have been changed. The name was originally Layne's and should have ended with him. I tried listening to current AIC and while the music is good, it's just not the same without Layne.
@@gsmom3883 I tried explaining this to someone. As long as songs that were written by Layne are being performed, his family should get royalties. If they are using Layne's image or likeness selling the early albums, his family should get royalties. And I believe they should get royalties for the band name as well since the name originally came from Layne. It can get complicated. But if they are using his picture, voice or likeness to make money.....royalties need to be paid to Layne's family.
I’m glad they didn’t call it quits after Layne. It’s a great way to remember and honor him by continuing on.
I just love that Jerry gets a second chance!!!
This band thou!!! So amazing together!!!
I jam this song everyday on my playlist for many years and hopefully many years to come.
I love all the albums with Duvall. Sure Layne Staley is gone, but is not forgotten. The best thing they could do for Layne was carry on. They are still better than 98% of the bands out there now. F the haters. Duvall had some big shoes to fill and has done a great job. Layne would be proud of them I believe. Party on dudes!
He’s singing it great, nice performance
Thanx for sharing your experience 💖PRICELESS
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this!
One of my favorite bands of all time!
Nice Bridge Of Sighs quote from Jerry at the beginning!
Indeed!
Thanks for putting this😊 on mate.. I'm sitting watching the cricket ...and having a beer and watching your vid...cheers to all Alice fans..
Glad you enjoyed it!
Credit where credit is due. William is a great singer
Nice to see Alice in chains still performing! Definitely one of my favorite bands!! Sound great!!!
Duvall es un tipazo y la forma en la que canta es un regalo para nuestros oídos. No sean pendejos de hacer comparaciones. A veces sucede que se tiene y mantiene el respeto por una canción y su anteriores creadores, por lo que se la conserva tal cual.
1st look at Alice n Chains in a while ...SO SAD....R.I.P LAYNE STALEY ONE OF THE BEST FRONT MEN AND VOCLIST GBNF THANKS FOR THE MUSIC ILL KEEP YOUR MEMORIES ALIVE❤
Jerry, time and time again delivers that masterpiece of a solo. Backbone of this band from day 1.
I loved this song then and I absolutely love it now, Jerry looks great
Love it!!!
Great damn band, thanks guys for keeping on. The new voice is solid!
That's a fantastic recording. Excellent job! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
William does a great job filling in a legends shoes
This is wonderful!
Saw AIC last time they came to Jersey. They were absolutely effin amazing, I could only imagine how much more mesmerizing they were when Layne was in his prime.
Saw them open for Van Halen, for unlawful carnal knowledge
Esp Layne singing Man in the Box live. Chills.
Jerry's guitar tone is epic.
Fantastic
Thank you William ❤
William is fucking awesome to heck with what the haters say
Absolutely killer
awesome I'd love to play there
Thank you all so much Lane would love this in heaven
😢if he goes there. You can not live like the devil & go to heaven 😢.
@@kat-601 We are not to judge. God reads hearts, not us.
Every fuckin time I regret one day listened to layne.
That was great
Sounds good when you turn it up like it should be ... Excellent song ! 🤙 .
Saw AiC in Boise. Yes, while not the same sans Layne, the show was still fantastic! And, they absolutely killed “We Die Young!”
Song gives me the shivers
Jerry Cantrell has successfully completed his transition to General Custer
