I saw the AIC MTV unplugged set for the first time in the last few years.
Holy crap the intro with this as the opening track is SO EMOTIONAL.
It hit ME HARD in the feels.
I was bawling tears just a couple songs into the set. It was so raw and powerful I had to take a smoke break and a deep breath.
I'm 43 years old now, and I've been KICKING myself in the ass for not getting into AIC properly before Layne died.
I always liked them but in the 90s I was more hung up on Nirvana and Soundgarden.
Though the deeper I've fallen into the AIC rabbit hole, the MORE I kick my own butt for not getting into them properly during their growing popularity in the 90s.
I moved to the Seattle area within MONTHS of Kurt Cobains death.
Honestly it wasn't until I moved here that I really even gave that genre the love and respect it deserved.
(When grunge first exploded onto the scene, I was so heavily stuck on the 80s rock/ hair metal I grew up listening to, it was difficult for me to transition and explore my musical taste properly. I was still heavy into Guns N Roses, Megadeth, Metallica, Def Leppard, & Bon Jovi when Nirvana broke into the mainstream. I was so heavily into that stuff it felt like a betrayal to switch over to different music styles. )
Living in the area where the SEATTLE SOUND originated did help.
Though over the next few years I would learn Goth/industrial was the true pulse of music I had been yearning to discover.
I do remember learning of Layne's passing at work, I was management at a local Hot Topic. I remember his death making me sad, but I could've felt it much deeper.

I like to think of the Duvall era as the second chapter of Alice in Chains. He’s no Layne, but he doesn’t try to be. He stands on his own and his voice IMO fits modern Alice in Chains. But every once and awhile, they take a moment to remember Layne. One of the greatest singers in history.
    It’s quite beautiful.

Different tuning, Nutshell is mostly electric guitar with acoustic playing softly in the background only at the end, with dominant bass, Wish You Were Here is entirely acoustic with piano, is much more brighter, Nutshell is almost like a funeral song. For me, there aren't too many songs (of many bands) that sound better overall live than the studio version, but Nutshell completely obliterates that for me! The whole performance is great and this entire show in general was stellar, one of the best full live recorded AIC shows out there regardless of era, Duvall while not Layne is a fantastic vocalist and always did his own thing instead of trying to perfectly replicate Layne which was a great decision. Layne will always be unmatched but AIC still rules with Duvall and the lead vocals he’s done on the last 3 albums have all been fantastic, they sound damn good live still too. RIP Layne probably my favorite singer ever but damn glad they added duvall and continued on because he rules and they’re still my favorite band ever, Jerry is the GOAT and Sean/Inez is one of the most rock solid rhythm sections you’ll ever find in hard rock

I will never understand why no one could ever get Layne the help he needed so much...why Layne couldn't allow anyone to help him. He was so great, he spoke to so many people, he made a memory mark on our souls...He was a voice for us struggling with our "teenage" lives to feel like we weren't alone....and the fact he was there for 2 weeks before being found has never been okay. If I was able to change the course of time, to help someone, not just famous, but I would go back and try to help him.. so we could have him in this world still, when "music" needs someone like Layne... However, him, his music, AIC will live with the fans forever. I just hope, whereever he is now, he's in peace..no pain..and rocking out as much as he was when we had him here. 21 years, and your not forgotten Layne! RIP

Mike Starr was reportedly the last person to have seen Layne alive, one day before his death. Apparently he wanted to get him to the hospital, but Layne threatened to end their friendship if he did. Things got heated and Mike stormed out. In the months before his death, Layne's friends and family constantly reached out to him, called him, some even shouted at him at his front door. There was just no reaction from Layne, he was too far gone at that point.
Many, many people tried to help him, they really did. Sometimes there's just nothing left that can be done.

This is the best rendition of the Nutshell lead guitar ever. Jerry killed it.
I lost my oldest son a few years ago and love to play this on my guitars. I play it every time I practice. Much Love

Duvall does it justice. He's not layne but he can sing no question about it. I'm surprised Jerry can perform this song with out breaking

Idk why but the versions of the solo Jerry does on the Les Pauls always sound otherworldly. This song always sounds great when he’s playing it but yeah it’s like the tone of the LP was made for this song.
