  • Amazing race conditions 4 the shore2shore this morning at Cottesloe Beach. This video captures serene conditions for the start of the 2nd leg to City Beach 5km north. The drone tracks the swimmers while the Pilot walks the beach, down the coast to the restricted fly zone at the Swanbourne SAS Base. It's just after sunrise and the calm waters so translucent, the rock formations at over 4m depth are perfectly imaged, revealing calcrete circles, ancient, fractured beach rock slabs and amazing corridor and ridge karst structures nearer shore.
These are the ultimate conditions for open water swimming and drone filming. The swimmers glide past Peters Pool on their way to North Cottesloe a kilometer north. Out the back of the Eric Street Pool, offshore from the OBH and North Cott Reef they swim over sandy tiger stripes, sand ripples 3-4 meters below. Next are the Grant St Rocks, Sammy Seal is there feeding? and then onwards to Vera View Dog Beach reef a captivating picture of rocky reef and sand from the air. The North Street Reef marks the beginning of Swanbourne Nedlands and the swimmers have left the shire.
The fractured ancient slabs of beach rock deep below are as clear as they will ever be. Swimmers glide majestically along, tracking the rocky ledges leading them northwards. They're past the Swanbourne Army Barracks and halfway to City Beach their destination for today. No red flags, it's safe to pass the rifle range today and on they go.
