- At PISMO beach Ca we flew out at 9:15am and wanted to get some surfers on a phantom 3 ...but saw a 10ft shark instead!!

I think this is good enough to make a clear argument that lifeguards should have drones on the job to help monitor the water to give warnings of any danger that's lurking close to swimmers and surfers

Though I doubt they would tell everyone theres a shark every time they see it. Just having someone on standby in case theres an abnormal number of them.
Here in Hawaii we have a method of telling if there are sharks in the water.
You dip your pinky finger in the ocean and then taste the finger.
If it tastes salty; there are sharks.

There are Always sharks in the surf zone. Sorry to burst your bubble. Just cause you didn't know doesn't change anything. My buddy's dad was a navy helicopter pilot and he would see sharks swimming around people every single day. Guess what they never attacked anyone. Shark attacks are extremely rare. Do you know what's far more dangerous to you. Dogs and cows. Fucking "Jaws" created a systemic phobia of something that was never a big problem
Derzy. Don't know about three feet every where but I believe that it could be more or less depending on the room you are in. Oitdoors though. Probably less

Fark,,,you should really count your blessings because there are some unlucky surfers that do get attacked by sharks and some even die,, have you ever thought you might have to conduct yourself better on land,,keep goin surfin on ya log mayb you might have a bad day too,,cant believe you r so shallow minded .....!!
I think there were several sharks. Look throughout the video, near the beginning
Some of them are stingrays too. That dark shape next to the big shark that we focus on was a stingray.

Ahhh sorry that was me, people sometimes mistake me for a shark cuz they noticed how majestic I was in the water I was like "nah, I'm a bit of a creep" they was like "ohh my gawhhh" and I was like "shark swim-away technique!" and I disappeared into the ocean. The moral of the story is.......

There's also a lot of seaweed in Cali waters, I know some of the dark patches were that...
I counted 3 sharks and 4 sting rays in total.
It's not like the shark was hunting surfers. It was just there in the water, being a shark.

The shark you followed was the SECOND one you caught on camera. Did you notice the first one (smaller shark) below the surfer at 0:21 into the video...it swims quickly to the right as you flew overhead.
Fuzzycop I saw several in that vid. The first being the one mentioned at about :21-:28. People often say that this is Whitey's back-yard. I disagree. It's his KITCHEN and the surfers are just options on the menu.

Verdant Hush Watch again : ) that shark was tracking surfers, remember they see out of the sides of their heads and that last guy was out there alone (easy target), it even pursued him in with the wave!
Really puts to rest some of the stigma that Sharks will attack. I know there's many scenarios but it was really cool to see it being non-aggressive.
Wow!! That guy was huge! That surfer was lucky to catch that wave in when he did, imagine seeing that next to you?? Drones definitely need to be used for this monitoring! I'd feel so much better about going in.
This is why I don't go in the ocean. If I can't fucking see into the water I aint steppin one foot in it

The shark was not looking to hurt anyone, it was enjoying the warm waters and the surf - most people get bit because they step on or bump into a shark, the sharks bite and release, they don't like to get kicked or shoved around any more than people do.

No most whites attack surfers very aggressively from deep water and launch them off their boards. My friend sitting right next to me in the lineup was bumped by a big fucking shark and spun him around 180 degrees. We held our ground and slowly paddled in.

We were on the pier when we thought we saw a large fish swim by the surfers, my daughter and I said shark but then dismissed it since we didn't see it again. Very cool video.

I think that it's pretty clear, that if a drone is stationarry above you, its not because your a great surfer, it's more likely cause you have a shark right under you.

It's pretty normal to have them in the water around surfers. Even here in California. Most of the time we are unaware. There is footage at UCSB where a school of sharks are swimming around off the campus. Malibu has tons of young Great Whites.

... I think, it's not the fact it did nothing. More so they are just observing. This is true. But, they are unpredictable. No different to any land based animal in the wild. Many can feed them by hand. But the risk is there. And we all know that risk is real.

I just commented that there was 2 sharks but I just saw another one. At the 01.3 mark there is a shark on the screen left of the surfer, on the surfer's right. It is hard to see but I ran through the scene several times and it is definitely a shark. Sharks need to move to breathe but at the shore they can rest because the water simple moves past them, allowing the shark to breathe but not have to swim or move. That's why they love the shore and hang out there.

I have I had one about 6 metres away and a wave ahead of me....wasn’t scared though which freaked me out more.....while I was surfing.....beautiful creatures....

Drones are just showing us what we couldn't see before. They are always around and 99 percent of the time could careless about humans. I live in Northern Cal for a period and surfed Salmon Creek by myself one day. The water was clear green and something passed under my feet that was the size of a car. That impression has never left me, you have no idea how big these things are until you encounter one...

What if beaches hired an extra lifeguard of two and had them trained using a drone and they just sweep near the coastline and when they see a shark they turn on an alarm

6Texasboi They have a flight time of only about 20 minutes, so it'd be a bit difficult. Unless they flew periodical patrols or something. Having something in the air would just cost too much and be too much of a hassle, I'd imagine. They will be used for that kinda things in the future for sure though, battery tech needs to take a bit of a leap. A wing-type plane might be a bit more useful.

Some beaches and their lifeguards are using photographic quads to constantly check for sharks, and then sound the alarm when they're spotted.

This video tells me 2 things: why I choose to not surf, and the appearance that sharks don't always attack surfers...
What would be better than a warning sound on certain drones, is to have the ability to communicate with those in the water.
A worthy project for someone with the know how, I would say.

Love Pismo and learnt to surf there about a week after this was originally shot. Last day did spot a fin about 20 feet behind, should really have shit myself but remained oddly calm with it all. Did call it a day not long after mind.

Man that shark was in perfect striking distance to bite that surfer. Lesson learned to all, make sure you ride a Longboard! If that was a short boarder or a body boarder, we probably would have been watching a shark attack.

Wishing drones were out there,spotting sharks',all the time. I got family out there.
born and raised in hawaii,surfedd all my life.... one important fact that california surfers do not train themselves is to never ever surf with an open wound...once that wound bleeds ,even if its just tiny drop ,your burger meat ,to whatever shark is around, they will attack.....and everytimeit happens.... never will the media say that it was because of bleeding wound..they would always claim something stupid as the shark must taken and thought that the surfer for a seal or sea lion and that is far from the truth..it is always something that the person missed out....and it is always the open wound.,shark will swim for hours t=just to take a a good bite....but they do know their food........if you have to surf with an opencut... use a perfume.. or colon and spray that in your suit......sharks stay away from toxic substance....

Paul the shark was not in an aggressive swimming posture. The shark I guarantee u had had no intention of attack but was curious. It breaks my heart when people misunderstand these amazing creatures. And we must also understand that the ocean doesn’t belong to humans
