Here's a tip they left out, with all the peeling paint they had you must use a bonding primer on the peeling areas such as Peel Stop, Peel Bond, etc. It is a clear bonding primer that actually seals the edges of the peel spot to diminish future peeling. It actually works like glue. Once I found this product I would never paint a house that had peeling paint without it It will decrease your future peeling by as much as 95%. I'm surprised a Lowe's video left this out since they sell it.
But, I've known pro painters that still don't use it and spend a lot of time doing customer service work going back to a house that keeps peeling sometimes with in months.
Still need to sand it tho?
If you properly scrape, sand and and prime the wood, it’s most likely you don’t need the peel stop. However if you do a quick budget job and don’t remove all of the loose paint and sand to a smooth finish, it may be more helpful
Thank you for that bit of information, I appreciate it!!
That’s why they don’t use it, so they are paid to keep going back 😂
I'm sure behind the scenes there was a team of a dozen people working on this.
So? What’s your point?
I am doing my house at this moment and it really can be a daunting job but made it look very doable if you just take your time and do not get frustrated. I last painted this house in 2007 when my father died along with my mother who was in her late 70's at the time and I was in my 50's. Now I am 71 and doing it alone this time. Thank you for all your input, your video is helpful.
Learned a lot about this project….to summarize, ain’t nobody got time for this. Hire a pro
😂😂😂 for real. This would take me MONTHS !
😂😂😂😂
I'm a painter I literally do almost exactly the same process as this video, great video and good detail.
Great video! Thanks for using a challenging project as an example. It always drives me crazy when DIY videos use an easy project that never is as complicated as the real thing!
Dang, what a massive project. Looks awesome.
Great video Monica, I learned a lot considering I've painted a house three times. The first was my dad's house when I was 17 and had just graduated from high school. My own house I've painted twice before. It is a stucco house. It's been a good 20 or more years since I painted it last (we've lived here 43 years) and even though it still looks pretty good, I'm 70 now, so I need to paint it while I'm still young. Next time it needs paint I'll be dead. Thanks for all the good tips, I learned a few things.
Hope youre doing well and staying safe during these crazy times Ernest.
You are gonna live to be 120... Right? =)
🤣
:(
Wya Ernest?
When does The Weekender come back? I miss it so much!
Never.
I don’t think it’s coming back either
I wish they would. I wouldn't mind some outdoor projects.

I thought this was very helpful. There are always critics but I thought it was very good for the first time DYI person. If you are a pro or experienced, you probably do not need to watch this video. I am going to have my college age daughter watch this and then this will be a summer father / daughter project. Can't wait to get started.
Thanks Stephen...and that sounds like a great project for you two! Good luck!
So she replaced exterior siding boards with Mdf 😢😢😢💔
So great thank you!! You have made it seem so simple and doable !!! Thanks for the instructions, my house isn’t that big and I’m going to save thousands and do it my self!! I’m a 50 single mom , always relying on ex for home projects - which never completed. I got this!
Not trying to be a know it all but ...you shouldn't caulk the bottom edge of wood siding like she's telling you to do...it's not overlapped just for looks...those laps allow water and moisture to escape, as well as airflow into the siding to keep out mold and mildew. There is also no way that the caulking will move enough to allow the paint to stay in place when the siding expands and contracts.
That,s right just as with sky lights, you have to give the water some were to go so the bottom end has a way for water to get out.
Great job on the whole project, but I was always told not to completely seal the siding laps to let the house breathe and for moisture to wick away. Especially a much older home, 100 yrs plus since this is way before a vapor barrier was ever used. Great job great video beatiful job!!!😍😍😍
Totally! She is so I'll informed and only repeating what contractors are relaying. My contract friend... Is helping me out with this entire project! Don't you mean ALL of the project. Oh sorry I'll just hold the ladder!
Great Video..!!!! The detail and instructions were awesome. This was a big job, but this video shows that it is possible. Thank you
🌸Wow!!!!! The finished product was amazing!!!!!💕 How many people actually worked on this project???? Just you two????😳
Those jobs are done by a crew not two people lol
On the ladder situation he’s almost right but I’ll hold the rungs when climbing not the rails. Also the ratio for a ladder is 4:1 as in every four feet it goes up you give it one foot away from the wall.
This is why I like brick and stone house. But it's beautiful once freshly paint! Good job!
Depending on the insulation they provide exterior paint might still be advantageous... Not that Americans are expected to insulate well 😅.
Not having wood warping with moisture changing is good too.
I hate painted bricks.
@@saulgoodman2018 - some bricks are really ugly though! 'Traditional' red bricks that are not 'perfect' though, yea, those types should NEVER be painted
How long did that take? 3 seasons?
Perfection...as always!!! I’m totally doing these colors for my house. I have the same shingle siding on the front of my house. 💙
Watching this video made me feel better about painting my house and knowing that my house will have a lot of character.
Haha I thought the ame thing, even if it looks raggidy I,ll just call it “character”
How did it go?
4000 square feet of paint and she’s using a brush and roller... 90 days later and it’s finally finished
Out of a cup smaller then a a serving of beer
You get a better quality paint job with a brush and roller. It costs more, lasts longer than spraying and you don't lose 20-40% of your paint into the air. I recommend homeowners do it by hand. Don't forget most of these painters on YT want you to buy sprayers. Custom homes and people with bigger budgets go brush and roller every time in my experience. It's a false economy. You think you're saving by spraying but you'll be needing a paint job much sooner.
This type of house it will take 3 guys and 3 weeks around to be finished. And all 3 pro painters shingles are harder to paint with a brush between the gaps than with the airless. They make it look so easy. I liked all the colors it looks amazing, good job btw.
How many people and how many days did it take to complete all the painting on this house?
Preparing to paint your house the most time-consuming part is replacing Rottenwood scraping off the old paint sanding replacing broken boards and of course caulking and priming painting really is about 30% of the actual work
These videos are awesome, Lowe's. Thank you! I am ready to paint my house!
Great job and so much work now I know why people pay for it to be done lol thanks for thr tutorial!
Do this for my house. These are amazing tips. Thanks, Monica. We love your work.
Come paint mine!!! Pleassseeeeee!! It's regular siding not wood & seems so daunting to do. Im scared. Great video!
Awesome transformation and you've made me feel more secure that I can do it. Thank you!
God, how much patience you have - to carry out such a volume of work! It looks great! Very fresh)
Great Job! It looks like a newly built home and the tips are very helpful to someone who never painted before. Way to Go!
Don't forget about the gutters:)
Absolutely love the color and the door against the copper lighting! I also love the shingles tip!
Monica!!!!! When are you coming with The Weekender again? It's always nice to see your videos, you are so good at explaining things and make it look easy :-) Happy Memorial Day Weekend!!!! xx
I love how this project and appreciate all the detailed instructions.
Have a detailed list off prices, to get an idea of the total $$$.

Same in Germany.
How to paint your house yourself: hire a professional painter.
Waste of money if you have free time. Instead of playing games and watching shows, you could DO IT YOURSELF.
The rich get richer, the middle class is dead. You spent it all on being lazy.

And I run a real estate empire. No one cares.
You have spent a lot of effort to build an illusion that you are safe and that your efforts will be rewarded. I'm rich because I knew there was no safety net, no one to give a 5h77. I remember almost dying from the flu in a 20F winter, homeless and alone.
So I don't have any lies to give myself. I've seen the bottom. A job is just a trap door to hell.
You continue to compete against third-worlders and machines while taxes and inflation (the real one, not the CPI) fleeces what's left of your piddly income. What used to be a guarantee to success is now a guarantee to failure.
You hate me now, but you'll hate yourself in 40 years, when you realize I was right and you have not a single penny to your name, despite throwing yourself at a system that doesn't care about you.
My dad did it. My entire family is doing it. And I see the end. I alone remain victorious, carrying the family banner as everyone else perishes into poverty and obscurity. Hell is coming and it's not sparing the "meek". You've been lied to your entire life.
@@user-qm4te9lb5l bruh not sure how that's even relevant.

Awesome question, Atamani! We have this guide on painting exteriors and recommend looking under the "Painting Masonry" section specifically: www.lowes.com/n/how-to/paint-textured-surfaces. Let us know if you have any other questions!
@@lowes thanks again 👍
So my house is on a pretty steep hill, does anyone know how I would paint that with a ladder? I know they sell ladder levelers but I haven’t seen any used on such a big hill
Thanks!
The stabilizing hardware placed on that ladder is an absolute must if you don’t work on ladders regularly you need this tool
My first time i helped paint the exterior of a small single story house& garage.the person Im helping did not do any pressure washing .didn't caulk anything and it's been 2 weeks and we're still working on it ..DOES IT REALLY TAKE THIS LONG ? AND SHOULDNT WE HAVE POWER WASHED IT FIRST?
Shingles are a pain I caulked most of my shingles and it made them look 50 times better and reduce the amount of drips also for my Eaves I used Restoleum turbo oil paint in a can 10 in spray with a house that big I wouldn’t spray paint it 😮
I’m not even planning to paint anything, but I watch and listen carefully what Monica said.
Wonderful transformation
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know of a method to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the password. I love any tricks you can offer me

@Finn Callan Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now.

@Finn Callan it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my account :D
@Howard Finn you are welcome :)
Stunning! Thanks for the tips. I would've caulked before primer. Now I know!
Beautiful job 😍. Thanks for another great video Monica!
“Here’s How to paint you house....... and this is my PROFESSIONAL PAINTER friend Mike.”. 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Absolutely beautiful transformation. I’m going to Lowe’s this weekend to start our painting project. Thank you so much for the tutorial.
WOW what a greaT job....Question? Does dark paint colors fade from the Sun hiting it the paint? Thanks
About 100 gallons of paint. Let's see. My math says... WHAT?! What other job needs to be done?
I was in the painting business for 50 years. For this rough old paint I would use 24grit zirconia 5" disks on a Mikita 5" sander. It will require less scraping before sanding and you won't have high places from the old paint and low places from the new. They will blend together. The 80grit she using in the video makes a feeble attempt at this. Also, if you pressure wash after you sand, water will soak into the wood, find its way under some of the paint and you'll be doing some more removing of old paint. For some reason a lot of youtube videos show painters using a little angle brush on wide surfaces. It's amateurish and slows you down.
She killed it! I’ve been a painter for quite a long time and she quite literally covered everything. I like the way the video is instructed aswell. For any beginner or DIY’er looking to do this, this is the best video to go off of.
Wow this was a lot of work.
Pressure washing the house makes me nervous! Aren't we forcing water in under the siding in a way it's been hung to avoid exactly that?? And the moisture barrier underneath... can it handle that? I just feel like it'll rot the plywood! Any feedback appreciated here!
"How To Paint a House" - Hire a pro. Take his advice and buy Benjamin Moore paint. Then stay out his way so he can do the job. lol
I would think sandblasting the paint off would be faster than scraping and sanding. I remember my parents 80 yr old house with cedar shingles was sand blasted in like two days. But I don't know how much sand blasting cost so if your on a budget you may have to take the longer route.
Problem with sandblasting is it leaves a huge mess. The sand will get into every little crack and crevice in those shingles. A lot of labor will be spent making sure all the sand is cleaned out. But , you still will have sand that is trapped and could very well drop onto the paint as coats are put on. This is not my opinion, but based on my practical experience with sandblasting.
If your house is over 40 years old, your paint job is most likely also your waterproofing. See the middle of the video where the framing is mostly exposed after that lap siding was removed. Shows how that barrier paper deteriorates and you have to remove all the siding to redo that.
Can you review best window coverings for waterfront home with Sun reflection
I tried at 1st only a sprayer to prime, but quickly found a combo of sprayer and brush filled all the cracks. Took longer but the payoff will be lasting longer
I second her choice of painting with Duramax. I used it on my 1920 house, and it was the only paint that didn't peel off. I would avoid matte finish paint on a house, because it doesn't hold up to UV and rain as well as a slightly glossier finish.
Extension ladder rule of thumb: 1 ft. out for every 4 ft. up, O.S.H.A OR 75 degree slant minimum. If you cheat this you risk yourself being seriously injured. Falls from 6 ft can kill.
NOT the pink door! This house screams for yellow.
I loved this video, it's so informative. But not a fan of the front door color.
Thought she was doing it her self? 😒🤨 Not call Mike a pro? 😒🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
It is obvious on the wood siding was prepared with half measures because I can see area's where the wood siding is missing and a lot of area's the sanding was incomplete and not feathered out. A very poor prep job with lots of patches where it's going to need spackling on the wood siding boards. According to the painter in this video it's called leaving the texture for character but what about the pealing factor because I can see that a lot of area's are going to be pealing after being exposed to the hot sun. I call this being lazy and leaving imperfections. This paint job will not last. I give it a month or two the most.
You are so amazing. I watched all of your projects and its awesome im from the Philippines 😭😭😭 how i wish for your creativity and magic
I would refuse or up charge the home owner on that horrific renovation...small moisture barrier when the wood has damage all over lmao...that's funny
Pressure washing is somewhat overrated and if you’re not experienced pressure washing can cause additional damage if your house is not too tall I would say start off scrubbing down the side of your house with the brush some dish soap and washing it off with a hose you can always upgrade the power washing later
A ladder stabilizer is a game changer when using an extension ladder. Without it you will feel like the ladder could shift at any minute and throw you off. With it, you will feel totally secure when working 15+ feet off the ground.
Did you paint the gutters the same color or left them as is? Great instructional video. Thank you.
What was the budget for this. It came out beautiful
Hey!
Looks incredible
How much will this project cost for homeowners? Thanks
I miss Monica and the weekender soooo much 😭

How long did it take to paint that house?
Great video, but I want to see how to hold a roller tray, like the bucket, 15 feet up on that ladder!:)
Sooo, did it only took a few months to paint this house? Great, then it's all DIY.
Amazing color, just what i have in mind. Bring that house stand out from the other in that neighboor...im so obsessed.
Girl you are awesome! Being that high on a ladder is terrifying to me.
I always enjoy every project you do.
I have been a DIY'r for many years, from my businesses to my home. This is the most detailed and best video walkthrough I've ever seen.
I really enjoyed this video, very informative and detailed, probably the best one I’ve seen.
Wow - you have inspired me!! THANK YOU!
A red door would look better and you didn't show how to repair enough to understand.
how much this cost? 15,000 thousand dollars?
What paint color for you use??
All that prep work was great, but then she chose that gloomy gray with that pinkish orange door! So much work for such terrible colors. This is supposed to be a house, not a funeral home. Dark Grey! Is Dracula going to live here? In the summer time this house will be hotter than hell! Colors matter and affect people's moods. Read more about the influence of colors on people's health and moods. Dark gray is very depressing. All the rest of the prep was excellent.
Grey is in
I thought she said it would take 5-20 years to finish painting 😓🤣
This is such a good timing video for me I’m waiting for the weather to get better to paint my house and it’s going to be a diy work
I am in love with you mam because of your communication skill
You scrap then pressure wash. If the homeowners want to pay the extra you sand after. Why pressure wash the house, and blow more loose pieces off and have edges again. Best way to do it is wash it first honestly and shop vac the mess later with a broom or brush to loosen flakes most homeowners are worried about time/price. Proper setup you'll save your arm legs and more
Honestly you can spend days scraping and the next day you can peel more. You get what you can make it look the smoothest nothing loose and coat of primer will make a world of a different
I went to buy this paint and it’s gray, not blue like it looks
What is the name of the siding color? Very good video!
How long do you need to wait in between coats? Does it need to dry?
