    Here's a tip they left out, with all the peeling paint they had you must use a bonding primer on the peeling areas such as Peel Stop, Peel Bond, etc. It is a clear bonding primer that actually seals the edges of the peel spot to diminish future peeling. It actually works like glue. Once I found this product I would never paint a house that had peeling paint without it It will decrease your future peeling by as much as 95%. I'm surprised a Lowe's video left this out since they sell it.
    But, I've known pro painters that still don't use it and spend a lot of time doing customer service work going back to a house that keeps peeling sometimes with in months.

      If you properly scrape, sand and and prime the wood, it’s most likely you don’t need the peel stop. However if you do a quick budget job and don’t remove all of the loose paint and sand to a smooth finish, it may be more helpful

    I am doing my house at this moment and it really can be a daunting job but made it look very doable if you just take your time and do not get frustrated. I last painted this house in 2007 when my father died along with my mother who was in her late 70's at the time and I was in my 50's. Now I am 71 and doing it alone this time. Thank you for all your input, your video is helpful.

    Great video Monica, I learned a lot considering I've painted a house three times. The first was my dad's house when I was 17 and had just graduated from high school. My own house I've painted twice before. It is a stucco house. It's been a good 20 or more years since I painted it last (we've lived here 43 years) and even though it still looks pretty good, I'm 70 now, so I need to paint it while I'm still young. Next time it needs paint I'll be dead. Thanks for all the good tips, I learned a few things.

  • @lxsgoad

    Not trying to be a know it all but ...you shouldn't caulk the bottom edge of wood siding like she's telling you to do...it's not overlapped just for looks...those laps allow water and moisture to escape, as well as airflow into the siding to keep out mold and mildew. There is also no way that the caulking will move enough to allow the paint to stay in place when the siding expands and contracts.

    • @vermarc1
      @vermarc1 4 роки тому +2

      That,s right just as with sky lights, you have to give the water some were to go so the bottom end has a way for water to get out.

      Great job on the whole project, but I was always told not to completely seal the siding laps to let the house breathe and for moisture to wick away. Especially a much older home, 100 yrs plus since this is way before a vapor barrier was ever used. Great job great video beatiful job!!!😍😍😍

    On the ladder situation he’s almost right but I’ll hold the rungs when climbing not the rails. Also the ratio for a ladder is 4:1 as in every four feet it goes up you give it one foot away from the wall.

      You get a better quality paint job with a brush and roller. It costs more, lasts longer than spraying and you don't lose 20-40% of your paint into the air. I recommend homeowners do it by hand. Don't forget most of these painters on YT want you to buy sprayers. Custom homes and people with bigger budgets go brush and roller every time in my experience. It's a false economy. You think you're saving by spraying but you'll be needing a paint job much sooner.

      And I run a real estate empire. No one cares.
      You have spent a lot of effort to build an illusion that you are safe and that your efforts will be rewarded. I'm rich because I knew there was no safety net, no one to give a 5h77. I remember almost dying from the flu in a 20F winter, homeless and alone.
      So I don't have any lies to give myself. I've seen the bottom. A job is just a trap door to hell.
      You continue to compete against third-worlders and machines while taxes and inflation (the real one, not the CPI) fleeces what's left of your piddly income. What used to be a guarantee to success is now a guarantee to failure.
      You hate me now, but you'll hate yourself in 40 years, when you realize I was right and you have not a single penny to your name, despite throwing yourself at a system that doesn't care about you.
      My dad did it. My entire family is doing it. And I see the end. I alone remain victorious, carrying the family banner as everyone else perishes into poverty and obscurity. Hell is coming and it's not sparing the "meek". You've been lied to your entire life.

    I was in the painting business for 50 years. For this rough old paint I would use 24grit zirconia 5" disks on a Mikita 5" sander. It will require less scraping before sanding and you won't have high places from the old paint and low places from the new. They will blend together. The 80grit she using in the video makes a feeble attempt at this. Also, if you pressure wash after you sand, water will soak into the wood, find its way under some of the paint and you'll be doing some more removing of old paint. For some reason a lot of youtube videos show painters using a little angle brush on wide surfaces. It's amateurish and slows you down.

    I would think sandblasting the paint off would be faster than scraping and sanding. I remember my parents 80 yr old house with cedar shingles was sand blasted in like two days. But I don't know how much sand blasting cost so if your on a budget you may have to take the longer route.

    • @georgepetrillo7316
      @georgepetrillo7316 2 роки тому +1

      Problem with sandblasting is it leaves a huge mess. The sand will get into every little crack and crevice in those shingles. A lot of labor will be spent making sure all the sand is cleaned out. But , you still will have sand that is trapped and could very well drop onto the paint as coats are put on. This is not my opinion, but based on my practical experience with sandblasting.

    If your house is over 40 years old, your paint job is most likely also your waterproofing. See the middle of the video where the framing is mostly exposed after that lap siding was removed. Shows how that barrier paper deteriorates and you have to remove all the siding to redo that.

    I second her choice of painting with Duramax. I used it on my 1920 house, and it was the only paint that didn't peel off. I would avoid matte finish paint on a house, because it doesn't hold up to UV and rain as well as a slightly glossier finish.

    It is obvious on the wood siding was prepared with half measures because I can see area's where the wood siding is missing and a lot of area's the sanding was incomplete and not feathered out. A very poor prep job with lots of patches where it's going to need spackling on the wood siding boards. According to the painter in this video it's called leaving the texture for character but what about the pealing factor because I can see that a lot of area's are going to be pealing after being exposed to the hot sun. I call this being lazy and leaving imperfections. This paint job will not last. I give it a month or two the most.

    Pressure washing is somewhat overrated and if you’re not experienced pressure washing can cause additional damage if your house is not too tall I would say start off scrubbing down the side of your house with the brush some dish soap and washing it off with a hose you can always upgrade the power washing later

    A ladder stabilizer is a game changer when using an extension ladder. Without it you will feel like the ladder could shift at any minute and throw you off. With it, you will feel totally secure when working 15+ feet off the ground.

    All that prep work was great, but then she chose that gloomy gray with that pinkish orange door! So much work for such terrible colors. This is supposed to be a house, not a funeral home. Dark Grey! Is Dracula going to live here? In the summer time this house will be hotter than hell! Colors matter and affect people's moods. Read more about the influence of colors on people's health and moods. Dark gray is very depressing. All the rest of the prep was excellent.

    You scrap then pressure wash. If the homeowners want to pay the extra you sand after. Why pressure wash the house, and blow more loose pieces off and have edges again. Best way to do it is wash it first honestly and shop vac the mess later with a broom or brush to loosen flakes most homeowners are worried about time/price. Proper setup you'll save your arm legs and more

      Honestly you can spend days scraping and the next day you can peel more. You get what you can make it look the smoothest nothing loose and coat of primer will make a world of a different
