I know I’m a little late getting into this video, but here goes. As a licensed landscape architect with 44 years of practice, let me suggest a few things when getting started doing a landscape plan for your home. First, find a copy of your property plat map with the surveyed boundaries of your lot and use a copy of that (with a good scale) as your base plan. If you can’t find that, hike down to the county or municipal courthouse and get one from the tax folks, they have all of the property plat maps. Second, check with your utility people to see where all of your utilities enter your property and extend to your house, especially those underground (avoid those when digging). Third, either by sight, experience or by measurement, determine how water flows across your property during a heavy rainstorm, note where there are swales on your property or where water accumulated during a storm. Fourth, determine where the sun rises and sets during each season with respect to your house (which way does your house face? North, south, east, west?) and where large trees or hills might cast shadows on your property. Fifth, be aware of your neighbors’ landscape features, and adjoining streets, streams or public spaces. Now, start writing all of these details on and around your base plat map before starting your landscape design. Then begin to identify (just use blobs) the public, private, maintenance and other zones around your house and the connections between them (walkways, lawn areas, etc.) before you start locating plants and other landscape features (I.e. ponds, decks, patios, play courts, etc.). Then start doing what this video tells you about placing plants and beds. Remember, plants GROW and need some space if they are to reach their full potential, don’t try shearing a sequoia😀 good luck. Oh, if this is a bit too much effort, hire yourself a licensed landscape architect, he or she can do what you need.

Normally I'm "ok" at designing but for some reason I'm pretty nervous about the landscape of the front of the house. I have a clean slate with bricks in front and I'm just trying to get the height and placement together ... while looking up perennials that do well in the sun/shade. I hope I don't plant anything that'll grow to block the window... trying to avoid that

Wires or pipes? Your location will determine how deep your pipes are. In Florida, they are about 6-10 inches deep. Turn your sprinklers on and mark the location. Remember that the pipes run in straight lines. You can figure out where the pipes are by where the heads are. If you are planting in a bed where ther is irrigation, pay attention to the sprinkler head location. If you aren't sure, dig with a small shovel.

    Summary
The key steps in designing a landscape plan include:
    1. Drawing a plan of your yard, including key features like hills, sun/shade areas, and privacy concerns.
    2. Identifying your goals, such as areas for dining, play, relaxation, or gardening.
    3. Making a wish list of current and future goals.
    4. Adding goals to the plan, starting with larger items like patios or decks and filling in around them.
    5. Considering your house's exterior style for design inspiration.
    6. Using plants strategically to define areas, create visual interest, and complement your overall design.
    7. Planning pathways to connect different points of interest in your yard.
    8. Adding water features and landscape lighting to enhance the ambiance of your outdoor space.
These steps can help you create a well-thought-out landscape plan that suits your needs and preferences.
Plants can be used to define areas and create visual interest in a landscape by following these tips:
    1. Beds with clean lines can define areas and points of interest, while curved beds tend to look more natural.
    2. Use plants strategically to decorate your outdoor space, similar to how you would decorate the interior of your home.
    3. Choose a few colors that work well together or avoid too much variation in small areas.
    4. Mix up texture and size to add visual appeal.
    5. Layer the heights of plants in your beds, placing the tallest ones at the back and the smallest ones at the front.
    6. Consider the mature height of plants to prevent them from blocking windows.
    7. Select perennials for plants that grow back every season and annuals for plants that need to be replanted each year.
    8. Plant in odd numbers for a visually appealing look.
    9. Use bushes or wider plants along the house to soften corners, but keep large plants a few feet from the foundation to prevent root damage.
By incorporating these strategies, you can effectively use plants to define areas, add visual interest, and enhance the overall aesthetic of your landscape design.
When incorporating water features and lighting into a landscape design, consider the following tips:
    ### Water Features:
    1. Adding a water feature, such as a small pond or fountain, can add tranquility and a touch of nature to your outdoor space.
    2. A small pond installation can be visually appealing and provide a habitat for plants and fish.
    3. Fountains can create relaxing sounds and help mask noise in the environment.
    4. Consider using a statue or tabletop fountain for small spaces.
    ### Lighting:
    1. Highlight different areas of your landscape with landscape lighting, such as uplights or spotlights for trees, floodlights for beds, and path lights for pathways.
    2. Use lighting to illuminate your landscape for nighttime enjoyment and visual appeal.
    3. Incorporate lighting design principles in your backyard, front yard, and side yard to enhance the overall ambiance.
    4. Keep maintenance in mind when selecting lighting options and consider how much time you want to spend taking care of your yard.
By following these tips, you can effectively incorporate water features and lighting into your landscape design to create a beautiful and functional outdoor space.
