You win
Stick with it.
Sounded Like a sticky situation...cough cough...!
Sending debonder!
This is a pretty common and Old-school fabrication/modeling technique. Instead of finding/making charcoal though, you can just use baking soda instead. Much easier to source, and it provides the same bond.
Another important thing not mentioned in the video is that this process instantly catalyzes the glue and forces it to cure immediately. It is a very exothermic reaction, and creates a lot of heat (thus the steam coming off of the material.) make sure you don't touch it while the reaction occurs :)
Another thing to note: this process works much better if you apply the glue *first*, and then sprinkle on your catalyst. This ensures that the glue penetrates into your repair and provides a better bond :)
Carbon may well produce a stronger end result. As you say, bicarb soda is used because it is easier to source. And likely on for that reason
As far as I understand, the carbon dust is much finer than soda, this makes the bond tighter.
Amazing! Appreciate the suggestions!!
Charcoal and carbon black provide better UV resistance, possibly better bonding with materials that already Incorporated carbon black.
Sands better too I think. I e been using baking soda and cotton wool too but this looks perfect for many applications
You could put your plasticine in the fridge to make it more robust, and use a tiny bit of oil brushed on so that it separates more easily from the new build-up
Hello! thanks for your recommendation. Wish you all the best!
That's a good idea. I'll try that.
It’s Blu-tak isn’t it?
For the fender I thought, “No Freaking Way.” But when you added the wire for rigidity and strength plus the charcoal and super glue; that was total genius! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for your positive feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful
I saw that and was wondering if the charcoal and superglue would hold on its own without the wire? The wire is a nice reinforcement though.
done similar repairs with baking soda with no reinforcement and it acts stronger then the plastic@@daveconner9520
It's the carbon apparently, because you can do the same thing with baking soda, without the mess charcoal makes. But if you're repairing something black, it's great to color match.
he sprayed it anyway..yes baking soda is easier, comes in packets for next to nothing
I believe that was the point of using charcoal.
@@241sail6thank you... i was just saying that he sprayed the part black so baking soda would be ok or better as its much less messy and very available..
It’s the fact that it’s a fine powder. The superglue is just using it as a substrate. It could be any small grained material.

I was glued to my screen the whole time I was watching this video.
I use wood dust mixed with epoxi to fix wood cracks and it is pretty solid and looks great! This one here is new to me, thanks for the tip! 👏👏👏

Woodworkers have been using sawdust and PVA glue for decades. Nothing new.

Yo utilizo bicarbonato y pegamento para arreglar mis gafas....
You can do the same thing with super glue and baking soda. I use it for filler when I am working on my models for railroads. Cheers from eastern TN
Hello! thanks for your recommendation. Wish you all the best!
Are there any different attributes between baking soda and charcoal after mixed with super glue?
Strength? Elasticity? Durability?
@@gorilladisco9108 Baking soda is "chippy".
Does the charcoal behave like an actuator like baking soda does?
Brilliantly simple and so effective!
Glad you think so!
Awesome, OMG...I can think of so many uses for this ! THANKS

Hello. Welcome to my channel. Thank you for your feedback!
When you don’t have plastic welding equipment but you need to DO SOMETHING, this is really something! 😄😄 Now I’m getting very curious as to how certain mechanical properties (especially fracture toughness) vary with the use of different fillers mixed with super glue. 🤔
my guess is debond failure as usual. unless the surface is heavily keyed off for a mechanical as well as tack bond.
About 10 years ago I repaired a food processor bowl that fell and broke completely in half with baking soda + super glue. It still remains water tight and bonded to this day. I have also ran it through the dishwasher probably hundreds of times.
I also do this trick on new phone cases. Usually the buttons are all textured the same and it's hard to tell them apart. I put a drop of superglue and a sprinkle of baking soda on the power button the make a small raised bump. Let's me quickly index and identify which button is which from my pocket, etc. I have never had a dot fall off from any of my phone cases, even after years of use going in/out of bags and pockets.
It's strong stuff :)
Spot on! This is the solution for the rare moments when I haven't got my favorite plastic welding equipment on me 🤣🤣
I have used the super glue and baking soda method. This looks good.
....Trop fort ! Congratulations ! ( Marc from France )

Amazing, a month ago I was in this kind of problem, not knowing it charcoal and super glue is the solution. Wow I was amazed of this kind of idea.
Have used baking powder before however I will try the charcoal especially on black repairs. Thanks for the information.

I think you need to explain that using charcoal powder and glue to harden it is something different from other techniques such as using cornstarch to harden it.
However, I do like the careful work you did in the final repair of the box, not only using the powder but also reinforcing it by covering it with a sheet of wire mesh.
Hello. Thank you for your recommendation and feedback. Wish you all the best!

is this any different than baking soda and super glue, other than the obvious color difference? Like any chemical advantages to using ash vs anything else?

Other than color, It is also very strong. You can choose to use baking soda, or charcoal, depending on the applications
Lo bueno es que el color te favorece 😊
