      Do the EXACT Same thing with Soda bicarbonate (Baking Powder), cheaper, and easier to find than graphite powder. Without the toxicity of graphite powder:
      The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation. A harmful concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered. Inhalation of dusts may cause effects on the lungs. This may result in graphite pneumoconiosis.

      @@ianbelletti6241 I don't know about the mixture with graphite. But mixing CA with sodium bicarbonate there's an actual chemical reaction creating a lot of heat and after this there's a new compound with much higher temperature resistance (supposedly like 1000° C) and strength. Of course this wouldn't work directly with the wax as ti would melt fast, so we'd need a somewhat different process for casting.

      The glue will not stick to those types of plastics used in plastic gears. So the metal piece added into the main part of the gear is crucial. The glue will stick to that holding the repair in place.

    I have used superglue with either bicarb or graphite depending on the desired colour to repair electronics cases. However graphite seems to inhibit superglue from setting. It does eventually set but takes a very long time. So I am interested if you found that to be so as well, or if a particular graphite is better or if you use an additive to assist. I guess you chose graphite for it's lubrication quality. I would not have though to do this with nylon gears as there are not many compatible adhesives & none that bond strongly. PU is one of the better ones for nylon, but not strong compared to bonding other materials. I guess that is why you add the wire. Anyway, it's great that you found a way to get it working again. As it happens, I have a burst nylon gear on a vintage turntable, you may have just inspired me to try repairing it, so thanks for the video.

    The best thing I have ever found for mixing with superglue is raw sienna pigment powder (burnt sienna works too). I bought a big bag to mix my own paints but did not get around to it, but I discovered the mixture of very fine iron rich clay and superglue makes a very solid substance. I add a little sawdust for larger lumps.
    Science:
    'Like the other earth colors, such as yellow ochre and umber, sienna is a clay which is partially composed of iron oxides. In the case of sienna, the most prevalent iron oxides are limonite (which in its natural state has a yellowish color), and goethite. In addition to iron oxides, natural or raw sienna is also composed of manganese oxide, which makes it darker than ochre. Aluminum oxides have also been found in the soil at very low levels.[5] When heated, the limonite and goethite is dehydrated and turns partially to hematite, which gives it a reddish-brown color.[6] Sienna is lighter in shade than raw umber, which is also clay with iron oxide, but which has a significantly higher content of manganese (5 to 20 percent) making it greenish brown or dark brown in color. When heated, raw umber becomes burnt umber, a very dark brown.[7]'

It does look crap,but works perfect. Your wax trick was great if you cant find the broken off gear part though.

    Awesome video. Ooh that using the wax as a mould and powdered graphite is a great idea. I'll def have to keep that in mind for future fixes. Also using a dremel and/or sandpaper to smooth it out would be nice to clean it up some would look nicer on flat surfaces like with my fan blade repair but not much can be done on a tiny part like your gear/cog.
    If you're in a jam and you're a smoker or live with one. Cigarette ash can work in a pinch instead of powdered graphite, when the heatwave started and my cheapo floor fan fell and developed a crack in one of the blades and wobbled/clicks loudly while spinning, i turned it off and took the wire blade guard off the front of the fan and used a pair of disposable gloves and on a piece of paper i mixed super glue and cool cigarette ash on the paper and used a qtip to apply this paste to the crack in the fan blade and held it somewhat in shape for 4-5 minutes and touching it up here and there and even got it all over the gloves somewhat trying to smooth it out with the gloved finger a little bit and it was a huge crack too like 3 inch (5cm) one way and 1 inch (1.7 cm) a different direction and let it sit for 12-24 hour for it to dry and put the wire blade guard back on, it looks ugly but it works great and spun up quietly and blows air good and held up great 2 months later still with almost 16 hours a day use.

    Cool. Repair to guitar nuts is commonly done by filing with baking soda and hitting it with thin CA glue/accelerator , they are subjected to a fair amount of stress. The baking soda helps the CA to bond to the substrate, or so it's claimed.

    • @MrSebesta
      @MrSebesta Рік тому +1

      Troy, I apologize for what is likely a novice question but I'm so interested in 1) repair over replace and 2) obtaining/utilizing common items/ingredients to get myself or others out of jam. My question is; What is "CA"? I'm especially intrigued bc of your statement, "they are subjected to a fair amount of stress." Thank you in advance!
      Paul

    • @troyclayton
      @troyclayton Рік тому +1

      @@MrSebesta Sorry I wasn't clear. CA is short for cyanoacrylate- super glue. Drop filing with CA is best done with thin consistency (it flows faster than water, care should be taken). Guitar building sites, like StewMac, are great sources for high quality CA glues in different viscosities. They also sell accelerant sprays- making the CA set up immediately. It's a game changer.
      edit: Water also works as an accelerant, but can be problematic (why CA bonds moist skin so quickly).

    Powdered graphite is commonly used as lock lubricant if you're looking for some.

    • @johndoesen1718
      @johndoesen1718 Рік тому +2

      It's actually the only thing you should use to lubricate a lock of any kind - oil is a no no.

      @@canofanger Oil, and grease, is sticky and will absorb dust, fine sand and whatnot, and will eventually fill your lock up with a dense paste that will make it malfunction.

    3:11 I've never tried powdered graphite before I'll have to give that a go one time and see if it works as good as super glue and baking soda which I've done many times before and even used cigarette ashes a few times as I think any very fine powder will do even if it's not real alkaline because I'm beginning to think maybe that alkaline part doesn't really matter too much as long as it's just an extremely fine powder so now that I think about it maybe finely ground glass would be ideal for certain applications
