    Thank you for actually recommending and talking about comic books. So many other channels just shout and pout about monetary value. Great choices

      You're very welcome! I'm planning on doing a 1980s DC recommended list in the near future. There are so many comic books out there and it can be hard to narrow down which ones to read. I hope you're able to track some of these down and enjoy them!

    Great list. Very similar to what my personal list would be but I would include John Byrne's run on Fantastic Four and I've never actually read Contest Of Champions.

      I should make an effort to read the FF Byrne issues in its entirety. I have a few issues still kicking around, but it has been a while since I've read them. I really enjoyed some of the Byrne issues before #232, especially the Sphinx/Galactus issues around #217. Thanks for watching!

    Great choices and excellent content so far on your channel! Well done. I would probably add "Secret Wars" to this list from that era because, while not perfect, the series was so influential for future iterations of the comic world and the MCU. And seeing all those heroes together was unbelievably exciting at the time.

      100% agree! I do remember reading the first several issues many many times, but also being disappointed at how the series finished (or maybe confused?). Thanks for watching!

    Frank Miller & Alan Moore goats of comic writing

      I'm working on my DC list for a video and it's dominated by these two, which makes the list very repetitious 😅

    I've re- read some of those at least thrice, swapping out a couple with DC and Indie entries. With DC it was "The Dark Knight Returns", "The Judas Contract" (The New Teen Titans), "Rites Of Spring" (An Alan Moore Swamp Thing storyline involving a mystical powered Arcane-- who sends Abbie to Hell), while with the Indies, VIZ reprinted Sampei Shirato's " The Island Of Sugaru" (Kamui)! My crowning achievement during that time was scoring a hardcover volume of EC's SHOCK SuspenStories #3. which reprinted the final issues of the title before the Senate hearings, which I've read at least 4 times by this point! The 80s were definitely a wildly creative era!

      That Swamp Thing storyline you mentioned is one of my all time favorites (and several of the others are superb reads as well). I'm a big fan of ShockSuspensStories as well, just because the series had an excellent mix of different genres. Great reads!

    I have always been confused by the ending of Marvel Contest of Champions. The score ends at 2-2 but at the end Death says to the Grand-master "It would seem you have won Grand-master. Three of the four pawns bearing the globe-pieces are yours". The globes were returned by Daredevil, the Thing, the Arabian Knight and Shamrock. Daredevil and the Thing are on the Grand-master's team. The Arabian Knight and Shamrock belong to team Death. Did I miss something???? Can someone explain this to me? Thank you!

    Squadron Supreme was the Boys before the Boys was a thing

      @parammeawal I got that run from Ebay last year for very cheap. I loved it! 🫡

    The Squadron Supreme series is great, and to me, it plants the seeds on many storylines or series which followed from others such as the Watchmen, the Authority and even the Boys, where superheroes, the "good guys" in many cases, think they can do better at governing, etc. It's really an underrated series I think. All nice picks. Simonson's Thor is probably the only pick I haven't reread since the original comics and that's just because of his art that I'm not the biggest fan of.

    • @raph-retro-comics
      @raph-retro-comics  Місяць тому

      Simonson's work was a bit jarring the first time I saw it - it was such a departure from other typical comic book art at that time, but after reading a few issues, it felt 'right'. I agree on Squadron Supreme on being a trend setter, and being an alternate universe, it really let Gruenwald flex his writing muscles. So under-rated!

      I've only recently been able to read it. I'm surprised it took me this long to get around to it, such a great story. I hope Vermin makes it into the movie!

    Hi. Your channel just was recommended for me, and I'm so glad. Pretty much all the comic runs you talk about here are my favourites too. I still have my original (off the shelf ) X-Men, Wolverine and Daredevil books. But I re-read the actual comics, so none are more than mid-grade now. 🙄
    My favourite pick was "The Price" I still have the original of that too. As a teenager in the 80's, reading that was awesome. I love Jim Starlin.
    I'm subscribed now, and will check out all your other videos. 🫡

      I probably re-read The Price every year - it's just so good. Jim Starlin's Dreadstar is also one of my favorites. I'll even excuse the part where he becomes very similar to Captain Marvel. It was such a great period of comic books. Thanks for subbing and I hope you enjoy my other videos!

      @raph-retro-comics I'll forgive Jim anything. 😆
      I also have the "Epic" magazines with "Metamorphosis Odyssey".
      Again, great to have found your channel. 🙂

    My list would have to include a few more Roger Stern books. Avengers: Under Siege is probably my #1. Then his Spidey stories: The Kid That Collected Spider-Man, and the 2 issue battle Spidey has with Juggernaut. The Kid That Collected Spider-Man might be the best Spider-Man story of all time and it's a back up story.

    • @raph-retro-comics
      @raph-retro-comics  22 дні тому +3

      I need to read more Avengers - my favorites are the Shooter/Byrne issues, because those are some of the earliest comic books I've read. Those Spider-man issues are classics!

      @forgerelli1 22 дні тому +1

      @@raph-retro-comics The early to mid 80s is when I started reading comics. The Avengers and Spider-Man from that time were my favorites and at the time I thought it was just the characters, but I eventually learned it was because they were written by Roger Stern.

    Why only Marvel...? and where the hell is X-Men God Loves, Man Kills? 🤔

    • @raph-retro-comics
      @raph-retro-comics  2 місяці тому +1

      I actually don't have a copy God Loves, Man Kills! I'm sure it'd be on the list if I had owned a copy. I'm going to make one for DC and maybe one for Indies. I have a feeling the DC 1980s one is going to be dominated by Alan Moore - might feel like an Alan Moore show.

      There are so many good story arcs in X-Men. Chris Claremont was truly a master of his craft!
