In the early 1980s, Marvel Comics experimented with printing comic books on a higher quality paper, resulting in brighter and more vibrant colors. This was also to take advantage of the popularity of artist John Byrne at ...

I think we can both agree that over the years, Rob has become more than just the owner of our lcs. He's become a dear friend. I wish him nothing but the best. I'll have to get down there to see him soon. We need to arrange to all get together for dinner and a few beers. Will's brought it up a few times. I think it's time.

His family is asking him to close up shop, and although he's thought about closing before, it makes more sense now as costs are just too high to keep the store running. I'm hoping he'll keep the doors open longer and maybe run the store part-time, but it's been a tough number of years.

    That Marvel Age X-Men show preview was actually for a pilot that was basically an anime. Toei, who did big shows like Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon, were the ones who animated it. Marvel had done some stuff with them before like the Japanese live action Spider-Man show. The pilot was called Pryde of the X-Men, and in my unpopular opinion, it was better than what we got later. But of course, that anime never made it past the pilot, and it was the later show that was a hit and continues to be with the X-Men '97 continuation.

    Marvel Fanfare was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Spotlighting creators and various characters, having cool pinup art, having no ads (right? Or were there ads), and being printed on that nice paper just made for a great series. I wish Marvel would try that again but I just don't think they have enough talent or care to really do it right.

    Red Sonja was based on/adapted from Robert E Howard's Red Sonya (with the y) of Rogatino. She was in her own story and not originally a swordswoman from The Hyborian Age, but when Roy Thomas brought her to the comics, he changed her quite a bit, including the spelling of her name. I'm guessing he had Conan say her name with that hyphenated "ya" both as a reference to the original spelling and a way to tell the reader how to pronunciaite it.

    • @raph-retro-comics
      @raph-retro-comics 19 днів тому

      I wonder if the intentional spelling was a way around obtaining rights for the character? I've never read Howard's books, but I understand they are very good.

    I know this is an old video, but those are some great books. My favorite place to shop for comics that isn't actually a comic book shop is Half Price Books. I don't know if you have any in Toronto (I'm in the U S.), but they mostly sell comics for half of cover price, even the 12 cent ones (if you're lucky to find any). They do sell some with higher sticker prices if they know there collectible. Even so, I always find great books for really cheap when I shop there.

    Charles Atlas was spoofed in a 1950s story arc in Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip ; which was one of the most popular comic strips during its history ( 1930s - 70s). I actually sent away for his fitness program. He promoted what he called Dynamic Tension ; tensing your muscles in various poses. Push ups , sit ups and other standard exercises were the training you applied Dynamic Tension with. His techniques of self defense were standard wrestling and judo moves but his boxing lessons were outdated ; John L. Sullivan bare knuckle style tactics. I received the complete course , over a period of 6(?) months if I remember correctly. I stopped studying his program half way through. I was getting enough exercises during school gym class and with after school activities. Seeing the ad so often I just got curious about its methods.

    Just found your channel. Great haul of dollar books. It's amazing what you can find sometimes. Love seeing all the treasures you picked up! love that you found that Visionaries comic! I have that whole short run but only because I bought them when they came out. nice find!

    Loved this one. Of course The Hammer of Hell is one of my favourites and I've loved this story for a while, but DD is my main man and I'm intrigued by your comments on the Fanfare story (an out of the way issue I'll be on the lookout for). Now my mind is whirling about why the heck DD never had a seeing eye dog sidekick or extended story line -- such a natural.

      Bill Mantlo was the writer for the DD story and it's only a 10 page story, but a very emotional one! The first story does feature a Hulk/Blob fight, maybe the only time they fought?

    A nice lot of back issues there, at a $ each you got a great bargain on some of them I think. I got a few half price back issues on FCBD myself but I never made out as well as you I don't think. Cool stuff
