Oh my goodness! I LOVE this quilt design. 1929 is the year my mother was born, so that caught my eye. And I LOVE old-design quilts so much. Of course now I need one of those rulers. Woohoo! Excited!

Thanks Jenny. Thinking about the utility of the quilts from time gone by, particularly from the 1920’s. The Great Depression defied a generation, my Grandparents and Parents. Memories not forgotten, but significants lost on me at the time. Sleeping under quilts sewn by hand from scraps, backed with pieced flower sacks, quilted by oh so many hands. Now more of an art form than a utilitarian garment, quilting is my legacy to give to the next generation. Nothing says warmth and love like a hand made quilt. Getting the drinkers path templates, it’s a utilitarian ruler😉. Best Regards, and happy quilting?

Made this quilt from scraps. I was skeptical at first that I could do the curved seams accurately. I bought the template and it was so easy. A few blocks in I did not need to pin. Went so fast and I was amazed how well it turned out. Thanks Jenny.

This quilt is stunning and the fabric is gorgeous! Love the story about the woman finding all those old newspaper patterns. What was old is new again! Thank heavens for our innovations in the quilting world. Imagine what quilter's from 1929 would be saying if they saw what we use today! I've been wanting to make a drunkard path quilt for awhile so I have been eyeing your ruler and now another use! Thanks again MSQC and looking forward to more "old patterns made new again"!!

I am fortunate to still have my grandmother with us. She was born in the early 20s and has been sewing since she was 5 or 6. So, I can't speak for the entire era but I know one who thinks all our rulers and gadgets are a waste of money, lol! 1929 was the beginning of the Great Depression so they are very careful with their money and resources. I, on the other hand, buy every gadget that catches my eye and she shakes her head at me

Love this pattern. Thanks for showing it. I was terrified of curves when I did my first Drunkard's Path quilt, but, as you showed in the close ups, they really aren't that hard after all. And it gives you such a sense of accomplishment when you can show it to someone. They woo and awe and say "Oh, I could never do curves like that." And you just smile because you know the secret...until you feel generous and teach them how to do it, too. LOL

Thanks Jenny - I’m a gadget Gerty so have more rulers than I’ve ever used - I need one of those drunkards path rulers - makes cutting so much easier - been quilting since the “quilting revival” in the 1980’s so know how to use paper/cardboard templates but the rulers cut down on cutting time and are more accurate - I’ve made my last few quilts from your tutorials and I am so pleased I found the Missouri Star 🌟 I live in Port Elizabeth South Africa and the internet is a perfect link for us quilters - happy stitching 🧵 Dianne

If you don’t want to pin the circles glue baste them with Elmers school glue before sewing. It washes out when you wash the quilt too. That way there is no seam ripping if a mistake is made. Once the glue is dry, which you can heat set to dry, it won’t hurt your machine. It turns out perfect every time. Love this pattern!

This is a really cool block! It looks like a cosmos full of stars! I love when we get to see patterns from years ago and remake them using modern techniques. Oh, what those women could have accomplished with modern technology!
The ”curve master foot” also works really well for curved piecing. The first time I used it, I set a complete circle into another one! I couldn’t believe how well it worked. Unfortunately, mine broke so now I need to replace it. The good news is that the company stands by its product and will replace the foot if it breaks. I just keep forgetting to do so. My mind has left me and I don’t know where it went. 😂

So nice to hear you use the correct language: convex and concave! To avoid confusion, remember that you go "into" a cave. I've been practicing curved piecing without pins and find that it's better to put the concave piece on top to avoid any little folds. It really works! pinning is good, but, when you're doing a lot of the Drunkard's Path blocks, pinning gets too time consuming.

I really really like this pattern! I got the drunkards path ruler recently though II haven’t had a chance to use it yet. This is definitely one for the to do list.

What a great quilt! This one has me wondering what it would look like with 2 colors, black and white maybe or all different corners but same centers. Just wondering! Endless possibilities! Thanks Jenny!

That clipping was published in the book: "101 Patchwork Patterns" by Ruby McKim. That GREAT book is hard to get now but some used copies are still around. It was my FIRST quilt book. In 9th grade I looked at it before I fell asleep and just knew I could pick ONE PATTERN to make. Folks that choice TOOK ME A YEAR to decide! Could not make up my mind. Finally, I just said: "I will make 'SUSANNAH' because my name is Susan! I did make it. I should have used contrast fabric however! And I used alternate plain baby blue gingham squares and I hand quilted (on a wooden floor frame) navy spiderwebs in them (So gastly ugly!). Well, MY FIRST QUILT.
