    I would add another mistake, mistake #6:
    Being scared of noise and of cranking up the ISO.
    Seriously, modern camera sensors are so good, and if you don't zoom in 100% you can get perfectly fine images with surprisingly high ISO, especially with full frame cameras.

    • @Dwaynefreeman
      @Dwaynefreeman 3 роки тому +13

      Damn right. And i’ll take high iso over camera shake every day of the week.

    • @JohnSoh
      @JohnSoh 3 роки тому +4

      I imagine that downsampling to IG or whatever level resolution will reduce a lot of the noise too.

    • @Lauren_C
      @Lauren_C 3 роки тому

      Going from a Canon G7x mkII to my Sony A7C, the difference in noise performance was truly startling. I went from defaulting to 15-20 on noise reduction in LightRoom for base ISO shots from the G7x, to not even bothering with it at all even at ISO 1600 on the A7C.
      Even in darker scenes where that ISO is going up, the noise is often much less intrusive as well, which often sees me neglecting to ramp up that noise reduction slider very high as well. It’s fantastic.

    • @HR-wd6cw
      @HR-wd6cw 3 роки тому +2

      True. As one of my photography instructors once said: "We can (usually) fix or address noise, but we can't fix a blurry image [from camera shake]" ...
      However, I would say that at the same time, shooting too high of an ISO for some situations is also a big mistake I see people (especially beginners) make.
      Perhaps, they're shooting a landscape where there is enough light to run, say a 1/100s shutter speed, but they forget and have their shutter speed racked up to 1/500s instead, and thus their ISO unecessarily high, like ISO 3200, given the situation). Now if the exposure is metered correctly and is "correct" (ie. not under/over exposed) then it might be "OK" because they won't have to adjust exposure in post, but if they do this, and their exposure is still wrong, then they will likely run into severe noise problems in post (especially if it results in an under exposure).

      Learnt to remove this fear after a while when doing gig photography, or shall we say, forced to do it... but because the platforms we show photos on, the noise is just not noticable.

    Back in the film days, large format product photography was done with light painting. At a small aperture you got great depth of field, and a long exposure time guaranteed even lighting if you kept the light moving. Reciprocity was the unexpected factor back then, now long exposure noise control.

    This video reminded me of how long I’ve been shooting and watching your videos man, since back in the 2010ish era of Drtv. I’ve now been shooting for 10 years fully into my career as a photographer, I’d always look up your videos and everything else on UA-cam to teach myself low light photography since I started as a concert photographer and was forced to learn about quick lighting changes and changing my settings manually on the fly as action went on. This gave me nostalgia since I don’t really look up tip videos as much. Glad to see this sort of content since I know it helps out so many people. Much love 🤘🏽

    Tip for night shooting: bring a powerful flashlight. I carry a Zebralight SC600FC MKIV Plus myself. Expensive, but both powerful and versatile (1800 lumens down to sub-1 lumen, and whatever brightness in between you could possibly want), small, and easy on battery life at lower settings. I used it in theatre for back stage work as well, specifically due to the extreme low brightness levels.
    The more powerful models use 18650 cells (requiring batteries and charger), however, there are some models (namely the SC5c mkII) that will output a whopping 475 lumens from a single AA cell, which a photographer may already have in their bag.

    One that I've seen, and this is more technique, is when you are working in extremely difficult lighting (where you maybe have your ISO set rather high, but you still can't get a fast enough shutter speed, let's say 1/20s or 1/30s) I see a lot of people still shoot in single shot mode. In those instances where I am forced to shoot below 1/50s or so (even with IBIS turned on) and my ISO is let's say 3200 or 6400 already and I can't go higher (for noise reasons) then I will put the camera into burst mode and take a series of bursts in hopes that ONE is sharp and useable. This is the one time I would say that spray-and pray may be appropriate, but you don't have to go crazy. maybe 3-5 shots depending on the lighting (or lack thereof). This is a tip that I think some people forget that they can try to at least one sharp shot.
    Another one I see is people relying too much on technology (like IBIS and eye AF). You need to know when to "over-ride" those features. They're great, but they aren't for every situation and won't work in every situation. So knowing good technique trumps all the technology in your camera like IBIS and eye AF. Because sometimes that technology can fail you. For example, rather than shoot at ISO 100 at 1/20s and hoping that IBIS will stabilize the image, boost your ISO to perhaps 200 or 400 and up your shutter to say 1/80s--you can still keep IBIS on but at least you know there is a much better chance you'll end up wit ha sharp shot, versus hoping for a sharp shot at an extremely slow shutter speed like 1/20s). Most modern cameras can allow you to shoot as low as 1/10s but honestly, I always would rather up the ISO and get at least 1/50s with IBIS or 1/80s without it just to be safe. So this also means not being afraid of upping your ISO too. Most cameras are good up to about ISO 3200 and some 6400 with the ability to still produce a useable image (may need some work in post, like NR, but otherwise still saveable).
    The other big mistake I would say that I see (and there are many) is if someone sevrely under exposes an image. They think, we'll I'll fix it later. No, do it then if you can (if it's a landscape, retake the shot and watch the exposure meter). I think some people assume that if they shot something underexposed at ISO 100 that they can fix it in post... sometimes, but I'd rather have an image at ISO 1600 and be spot on (exposure wise) than under expose something by say 2-3 stops and have to bring it up in post by 2-3 stops because we know it will degrade the image and probably introduce some/a bunch of noise in the process. Again, goes back to not being afraid of higher ISOs. Some people (espeically beginners) are always taught to shoot at the lowest ISO possible, but I think some people confuse this saying with native ISO or simply lowest ISO the camera can go, no matter what, and they forget other aspects, like shutter speed, and it results in an underexposed image in many cases.

    long exposure noise reduction is fine for time lapse unless it's so dark you absolutely need a shutter speed that's more than half your interval. depending on how good it is on your camera it may reduce noise more than the increase in noise you'll get from increasing iso to get the shutter speed down to half your interval. it also comes in handy if your camera doesn't let you set an interval because you can just set your shutter speed to half what you want your interval to be.

    That was basically my first astrophotograpy setup... a table and a book to angle the (old, cheap) camera up to the sky a bit. I felt already with a basic wired remote like a boss haha :D
    But i have to say... i had a cheap 10 or 15$ tripod, it felt apart as i wanted to use it
    And now im running a cheap, but still nice 750mm newton on a EQ3-2 mount which is basically perfoming poor for AP but hey, 700-800€ for everything for astrophotography is already enough for beginning the hobby properly. Except for auto focussing and filters its basically a "modern" GoTo/Autoguiding/Platesolving setup with the notebook

    I wish I could use these tips while Helicopter spotting in the evening. But unfortunately that won't work.
    A tripod or long exposures are exactly the opposite of what I need.
    Sony A6300 + SEL 55-210mm sucks at darker environments. Heli spotting with 1/800s, 210mm, ISO 800 (or higher) is an absolutely challenge in the evening. Also because Sony A6300 C-AF sucks at tracking flying 🚁
    And I just wish telephoto lenses would be much faster.
