While definitely a hero, he understood (as all of us who served do), that the true heroes were people like the helicopter pilot (who remains unnamed) who gave his life retuning to a hopeless situation. That helicopter pilot deserves no less recognition, and MSGT Benavidez honorably expressed his acknowledgement of this. I salute people like this who understand honor and courage, and represent the true strength of this nation.
It isn't that fragile tho, it's just that modern humans are weak minded and weak bodied, they feel too much pain from things that shouldnt even hurt that much, we made ourself fragile, the human body can become pretty though
This is the most in depth, most informative and most emotional retelling of Roy Benavidez' story. Thank you Mr Ballen for keeping the memory of this unquestioned American hero alive.
Can I make mention the fact that he did all of this after suffering a spinal injury that medical staff said would leave him a paraplegic. He spent six months teaching himself how to walk again, managed to train hard enough to apply and get into the green berets. That man lived off of nothing but sheer willpower and tenacity. When the medical staff don't even know where to begin surgery due to the dozens of wounds and he still survived. Damn. He earned those medals.

I knew Roy, I'm from south Texas and although I was Air Force, I spent a great deal of time recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center, which is where we met. He was an amazing guy, who deserved a lot more than the 63 years he got, but he surely made the most out of them. He was an inspiration to everyone who met him. He is missed.
Thank you for your service. My brother was in country 2 tours. What a wonderful man Roy sounds to have been, and the fact he was 32 and not in his late teens or early 20's like so many young men in that war, is another testimony to his strength and grit! Awe inspiring.
Idkkkkkkk, I still think the real hero was Roy. Not to say the pilot wasn’t incredibly brave and loyal, it’s just if there’s only one “the real hero” of this story, I’d say it’s Roy. The pilot died after one blow, Roy kept going after 37 and a body bag.
Oh and the pilot put himself in the line of fire, sure. He also, retreated to wait for a signal and then put himself in line of fire once more. Roy threw himself out of the helicopter, no parachute, INTO the fire and then continued running directly into the fire, over and over again.
I've listened to the story many times. It is such an inspiration, and I never get tired of hearing it. They don't make men like Roy anymore and that is a real shame. Because we need more men like him.
Roy was my uncle and everything you say is correct but when he was stabbed in the gut and his insides were coming out he took his belt off and used it to keep his intestines for spilling out so he could keep fighting and saving lives. Your uncle was a total and complete badass in all the best ways. I hate to say a man like Roy was wrong about anything, but he was totally wrong about not being a hero. There absolutely are dead men who are heroes, but there are plenty of living ones who are as well. Ceasing to breathe isn't what gets you the title; it's stepping up and taking on the threat when the safety and/or well-being of others is at risk.
Guys like your uncle fought so hard for us. All I have to do is stand up for whats right and complain loudly when it’s not. When people in power threaten us with prison for saying things that they disapprove of, we pussy out to stay free. Thank you, Roy for reminding us what being a man is about. You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control your reaction to it.
Whoever the pilot was deserves just as much credit. He gave his life to help save those men even though he knew what was possibly goina happen. Both are true heroes.
@@logiiiicshorts6308 Yeah. xD He got shot in the head and had to have a metal plate. ( Unfortunately Medics were often targets ) He ended up staying in thailand, the warm climate was better for the headaches. He also had saved some kids ( their parents pleaded to him in the helicopter as it left the embassy, probably practically forced, lol ) which my grandparents adopted till their actual parents were able to eventually get here. When doing their laundry, my gramma noticed something sewn into their clothes. Was gold, which she saved fpr their college which they all went to and were super successful. Top tier warzone parenting, IMO. Last i heard hes still alive, in Seattle.
This exemplifies the quote by Heraclitus about soldiers in battle , “Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.”

Straight God. Not even hero, you hear those "amazing what the body can do" stories. But thus is just beyond that level. Thus dude had to have only pure adrenalin and morphine or herion or whatever he had in that meditation, cause there wasn't any blood left
I met Roy shortly after I joined Special Forces. He was a true hero and an all-around good guy. Friendly, modest to a fault. He did not stop trying to help his brothers in Group, even after he was retired. It has been an honor knowing him.
The man's body was literally destroyed in combat, and he made a full recovery. Yet, in the end, he couldn't survive with diabetes. The duality of the human body being extremely resilient, yet incredibly fragile at the same time... that's the mysterious part of this story.

@S55 the only being strong enough to stop roy was himself.
He was in his 60's and lets be honest....no one is making a FULL RECOVERY from the damage that guy took....Im sure if he is anything like they said...You couldnt be able to tell cause he would be the last one to show it....but im sure that man had lots of battle scars and lots of pain as he aged.
Just a complete BOSS.
@@Spills51 Yes, I'm sure the "full recovery" was a bit exaggerated. He definitely had lots of aches and pains, if not actual health problems, over the years due to his injuries. While definitely a hero, he understood (as all of us who served do), that the true heroes were people like the helicopter pilot (who remains unnamed) who gave his life retuning to a hopeless situation. Can I make mention the fact that he did all of this after suffering a spinal injury that medical staff said would leave him a paraplegic. He spent six months teaching himself how to walk again, managed to train hard enough to apply and get into the green berets. That man lived off of nothing but sheer willpower and tenacity.
