@@austonsmith536 You’d be very surprised on your Minds Will to Live. When you are in situations like this you go into survival mode and you WILL do EVERYTHING to survive. It’s literally built into the mind and body to fight as hard as your body will allow. We may think “Wow, if that happened to me I would to want to end it instead of suffer.” But I’m tellin ya, if you are a sane human being, you won’t just “give up”. :)
Whenever I hear a survivor’s story and they talk about their guilt, I just want to hug them and tell them that whoever they lost was cheering them on from wherever we go. Like if I died in a disaster and some afterlife exists that I can view from, I’d be cheering like a maniac when my girlfriend reached land all on her own ❤
Yes! This. God doesn't that sentiment just pull at your heartstrings?? I too would cheer; they wouldn't want you to be sad, they'd want you to live on, live well, and remember them fondly.

I remember the documentary about this last story. The part you didn’t touch on is the guy that got back to camp first had a weird feeling to not leave right away. He stayed for days and kinda mourned. Until his friend crawled. Literally as he was leaving.
I'd like to formally request that we get more survival stories like these, just so I'm slightly less terrified of the world after every MrBallen binge.
🤣🤣🤣 I thought it was just me. I'm now petrified of the world. Granted, I never had any desire to go climb mountains, camping, exploring caves. you know, weird shit like that. @@criminallyautistic8372 I could never bring myself to be mad at a friend for not saving me if I was unsavable. This friend of his desperately tried to hold on in freezing temps and winds for hours to help his friend, there's people way worse who would've cut the cord after 10 minutes. Now that would probably upset me a bit more. I still wouldn't blame them, but we wouldn't be as close after for sure, but I'd still prefer there only be one death rather than two. If nothing else, I'd be glad that at least our families would know what happened to us and my friend would get to go on and enjoy a full life. Of course no one wants to die, I'd be incredibly sad and upset but considering how hard this man tried to save him? If I was in those shoes I would know, even if I was gonna die, that my friend loved me enough to desperately try to get me down the mountain in the first place, and held on until he literally couldn't without risking his life. I don't think it'd actively harm our relationship after and if we drifted apart it'd be natural, at least on my end. Survival scenarios call for a survival mentality and as logical of thoughts as one can muster, even if it hurts them emotionally. Anyone who regularly takes risks such as rock and mountain climbing knows this well. It wasn't going to benefit the man with the broken leg to have his friend die with him, it'd just make for a more tragic story. Edit: Holy spelling errors, think I got em all tho 😬 Lemme know if I missed any bad ones lmao
I've read Joe's book and I've seen touching the void both are fantastic. I feel bad for Simon though, Joe on one hand almost died and went through this tremendously terrible ordeal and he is rightly considered a survivor. Simon, on the other hand, had attempted what was essentially one of the most challenging, daring and brave mountain climbing rescues ever recorded but because he was forced to cut the rope it's considered controversial. The worst part about it is the fact that if he didn't cut the rope they likely would have both died and there wouldn't have been a story at all. I could understand why simon has some resentment towards Joe for writing the book and towards the community even if Joe would never blamed him for the choice he made. They're still plenty of people in the community and outside of the community that look on that choice and just don't fully understand the gravity of it. And so now he's forever known as the guy who cut the rope rather than a man who attempted an unheard of lone rescue of his friend from what was almost certain death at 20,000 feet. The trauma and guilt that he went through is every bit as brutal as the trauma that Joe had to endure and yet he's been stigmatized unfairly. As far as I am concerned, Simon succeeded in saving Joe and his actions should be seen as such.
@@201hastings Even if people don't blame him today, they did back when it happened. When I watched the interviews with Joe and Simon during the making of the movie, you get the distinct impression that Simon is pretty bitter about the entire experience. Obviously he participated in making the movie but my feeling was that Joe took that opportunity partially to try to help Simon's reputation. I think it worked but it may have been too little too late. If you've had this reputation for a decade, obviously it's not going to matter if people's minds change.
There is another story on a different video where a deep-sea technical diver got stranded when the command ship drifted, and he waited on the work site while the crew attempted a rescue. When they finally got to him, he had been without air for 20 minutes… but he survived and made a full recovery.
"drifted apart over the years" that's a line I could never grasp as a kid or even in my early 20's. Now it's so surreal. Even people who once were like family to me, it's just not the same. Nothing bad happened, it's just how life is no matter what craziness you both go through.
@@blakdragon2202 I’ve always had an almost scarily ease of forgetting people that were once close friends. It only got worse when the people I surrounded myself with would constantly screw me over. I think it was in my late 20's when this started happening with some of my older, and more close relationships as they started marrying/moving/having kids/getting new careers and I was doing the same [minus the getting married and kids part- I'm just fine with my furbabies. My mom had my youngest sister when I was 16 and one of my closest friends (we have for sure drifted apart but mostly due to geography, I'm actually still very close with this friend) had a kid at 17 so whether I was at home or hanging out with friends, I've had my fill of babies for my lifetime lol] Anyways, it was definitely a weird phase that for me personally I started to take hard because I didn't understand what was happening and thought maybe something was wrong with me or that I was unlikable and I rememeber finally just talking to one of my friends (the one who had the baby) and being like "yo, what happened with our friend group and am I to blame at all?" And I had no clue but everyone else in my circles were kinda going through the same thing. Once I realized that, it was all a lot easier to accept and it def made me a more wiser, more mature individual in how I see life [Forrest Gump and the feather do a good job of showing what a (actually 2 if you include the snippets of Jenny's life) full life looks like in a 2 hour period; American Beauty and the bag blowing in the wind is probably a different thing. I never fully understood that movie lol.]

I knew rick and believe me when i tell you, there are no 3 killers out there on the loose... this is actually the 2nd story ive heard of him being 'killed' and left for dead.
That’s my trigger- when they lure somebody in by taking advantage of another human’s kindness. We had a lady in the US that opened her door to let a 15 year old girl use her phone, and the girl and her friends beat her to death for it.
I watched "Touching the Void" in high school. The guy didn't just shatter his leg... When he fell, he landed right on his feet. His tibia and fibula got shoved up into his thigh. Can you even imagine?!?!?
That reminds me of the movie 127 Hours. Mr. Ballet actually touched on this story. Basically the guy fell into a crevice and got wedged between some rocks... He had to break his arm to get away 🥴. Not only did he break his arm but he used a pocket knife to cut the ligaments that were still connected inside his arm.
Welp- not that I've ever considered mountain climbing as a reasonable thing to do with my body, that clarification you gave settles it- I will definitely never in a million years go on a mountain for any reason whatsoever.
Joe is a pure badass. How tough to do you have to be to crawl 5 miles with a broken leg and im assuming bruises all over his body from falling. Not to mention not dying falling 100 feet then 80 feet with a broken leg. My god this dude is like the terminator. And Simon did try He held Joe's weight for nearly 3 hours in intense cold and a blizzard. Thats a long time to be holding onto someones weight like that. I sure as shit couldn't hold someone up that long. He really did try his best and hes a badass as well for holding his buddy up that long, i give him serious props for that.
We watched a documentary on it in RE class when I was about fourteen. I can't imagine the inner strength it would take to survive that, and seeing it visualised and acted out in the movie was really intense. I feel like I didn't blink for the entire runtime, haha.
Joe and Simon was such a emotional story, I couldn’t imagine what Joe felt descending the rope, the strong survive I guess. The desperation Simon had trying to save his friend for hours in the storm slowly getting pulled down hill is something else too, before seeing him crawl back into camp he probably was reliving their final moments over and over in his head, I’m glad they both understood the situation.
I’m sad they drifted apart. What an incredible, heartbreaking, terrifying story. But I feel as though the guilt really got to Simon and it was hard to keep that friendship going. So happy they both lived.
@@VchaosTheoryV As the original commenter said, guilt. Seeing his friend would likely remind him of how he almost left his friend to die, and that can't be a good feeling.

The second story is such an Australian thing it's not funny like " I was just helping a few mates out ya know, and the next thing I know a fuggen dingo is diggin me out the fuggen desert"
Plus you know what he did for hours trying to save his friend he certainly thought was in vain but he waited to the last possible moment to cut bait. He also stayed for a long while at camp which is quite fortunate. To see him show up so suddenly realizing that what he had done actually helped save his friends life is pretty cool.
Every foot that Simon slipped down that mountain after Joe was a foot that Joe didn't need to fall. Possibly made a world of difference since falling from higher up could have further injured Joe or broken off the ledge he landed on.

And sometimes telling untrue stories and posting them as true is just great! Wether it’s false or fact, it’s all entertainment at the end of the day. 😂 I said nothing about any of the stories being true or false yet your basis of argument is around something that was never even mentioned or brought up. Now if there’s individuals out there that are that gullible and choose to believe that SOME of these stories are true then that’s there business. On the other hand if hearing the stories helps people get through their days of work and what not then it’s doing a great service to them regardless of the truth behind them. I don't think Jon Ballen ever says that any of the stories are the definitive versions. He leaves lots of references that he has used so if you want to research them you can see what is different or left out. A lot of the stories have extra elements to them that he doesn't put in. The fact is, he tells stories really well and inspires people to go and research them further. Things that should be taught in school! And the Missing 411 stories - he literally says he has permission from David Paulides!

So Simon is a HERO, first he didn't abandon his friend, he tries for hours to take him down and when SHTF he still hold him for 2 and a half hours in freezing temps, pitch black storming all over the place. For me, I'm sure if Simon could choose between him and his friend he was going to save Joe and not himself. If he was all for himself he would have abandoned Joe much sooner. It was only because he hadn't any other choice. I respect them both for the same.
If you watch interviews with Joe like on Touching the Void and The Beckoning Silence, it's clear that Joe would not have gone to the lengths that Simon did if their situation was reversed. Simon is absolutely a hero and the criticism he got from the climbing community was seriously unwarranted. It makes me sad every time I think about it.

I held on as long as i could but i had to make a decision. My wife is such a bitch when i dont answer. And i really had to take a dump! Plus my nose and back. I let him go. I thought he was dead. So as soon as i finished taking a dump i packed up and drove home! When he got home a month later i found out he was only 3 feet from bott. If i looked over ledge he was fine. But i left him in middle of nowhere! Took him a month to get home. Boy did he have some story! Bears! He almost drowned! Lost a lot of weight! Poor guy. We lost touch. When i went to hug him he punched me in the face! What a jerk!

You forgot to include the best part of the Void story. How Joe knew he had made it to the base camp while in the state of delirium he was in. He crawled through their designated latrine area and when he realized he was now covered in shit and piss he started faintly calling for his friends who were asleep at the time but were literally planning to leave the next morning. The only reason they were still there too is because Simon was so distraught with the idea that he killed his friend he decided to just remain at the base camp for a few more days in order to prepare himself to tell the world what had happened. We randomly stumbled across the movie one night and that shit is terrifying. Highly recommend.

Imagine being one of those ranch hands. You're just looking around while at work, a ways off the property, and you see this naked, skeletal guy who collapses as you approach
In hindsight, the right decision for Joe and Simon may have ultimately been what saved them both. If Simon hadn't survived, he wouldn't have been there when Joe emerged. If they both fell, tethered, then the void could have swallowed them both very easily. It almost seems like someone was looking out for them
Joe's crawl back after getting out of the crevasse was a story in its own right. Yes. This truly stands out as one of the greatest survival stories ever. But as bad as it was, If Simon had not cut the rope, they'd both be dead. It's a tough situation. But Simon not only did the right thing, he did the only thing he should have.
Simon did make the right choice. If he hadn't cut the rope and got pulled over the cliff with Joe chances are his extra weight (or any other number of factors) would have caused them to miss the bit of ledge that saved Joe and they both would have died from the longer fall.
Also Joe has said that he was so cold exposed over the cliff that another night and he had absolutely no doubt he would have frozen to death. He talks about it in the documentary film The Beckoning Silence.

I hate storytelling channels because they usually talk all weird and I can't listen to them, lol. MrBallen doesn't try to make it sound scary, he tried to make you feel like you are IN the story, which is way better 👌❤️
who would've known that bedtime stories would be replaced with MrBallen's horror stories? edit : i was talking about actual bedtime stories where someone reads it to you, not whatever videos y'all are talking about :)
I hate people who prey on people’s good will and end up hurting them. Can’t trust anyone these days. A good person may go without help because of this apprehension
One thing I've heard is that most people are decent law-abiding people. If you just approach a random person generally they'll be fine. However, decent law-abiding people will not approach you; they go about being decent law-abiding citizens living their own lives. So when a stranger approaches you, the odds that they're a bad person go up significantly because that means they want something from you and there's a chance it's something very bad. Your mileage may vary obviously.
Wow, Mr Ballen! You are an extremely gifted storyteller, obviously. The very first video of yours that I had ever watched had me so captivated that I just had to binge watch EVERYTHING! The number of subscribers you have accrued is such an outstanding, exceptional number of people. Almost 9 million is amazing
Ive always been thin and petite. When I developed AML leukemia and was in the hospital for a month getting my first of several treatments - I’d look at the heavy set nurses with envy. I knew I was about to lose a lot of weight and didn’t have a reserve. I now think it’s a good idea to carry an extra 10 pounds as you get older (over 50). @@davster9853 Of course but it goes deeper than that, It's something theyd never be able to forget. If there was even a glimpse of danger I.e getting out of a car on a busy street, I would be paranoid about helping him/keeping him safe at all times due to guilt. It's not healthy for either parties.
If Simon went over with Joe I bet they would both have died. Joe survived because there was room on the ice sheet for him and it was able to hold his weight . And there was nobody attached to pull them both further down. Mostly though he never gave up . They both showed incredible strength.
When you got to the part about him not tying a knot at the end of the rope, I had to pause the video for a second. The amount of courage you'd have to have to take that first step off the ledge....
Yeah, I felt the same. Was a pretty hardcore decision, but good foresight in knowing it would've been better to drop of immediately if the end of the rope didn't lead to the bottom than to prolong it by hanging on to the knot.

Netflix UK recently released a docu-drama about Joe and Simon and I've never been more tense while watching a documentary. The way they talk almost casually about it is insane and Joe really captures the sheer crushing loneliness and desperation he felt, particularly when he was in the ice crevasse and realised the rope had been cut. It's one of those stories that has just stuck in my brain really hard and definitely worth a watch.
You mean, "We mariners who remember to wear our lifejackets in a hurricane, when the boat starts cartwheeling, we call that "pole pitching". That's a helluva stunt, Shipmate. "I don't know what the mariners who forgot their lifejackets call it, because ....... . "
...I always thought it was "Pitch Poling". Oops 😅 edit: I just looked it up, apparently it actually is "Pitchpoling" but as one word. The more your learn!
My dad traveled that highway when he was younger and there was a man with his wife and kid broken down and he told his mate to pull over and he's mate said nah f**K that and they kept driving and when they looked back the guy was walking across the road back to his family with a rifle on his shoulder
The first story I remember seeing the movie. After her boyfriend got swept out to sea she saw him in the water and rescued him. He was badly injured but she took care of him. It was something that kept her going. At the end of the movie you finally realize it's an illusion because he's dead and she never rescued him. Her brain probably created it because of her hurting her head or out of survival. It was a short lived love story because they only knew each other for about a month.
story #3 the Void does indeed have a film, its called "touching the void" a Channel4 production, its an amazing film really well made in a drama documentary style with commentary from Simon and Joe throughout, id highly recommend it. you get to hear through the narration by the two men not only the descriptions of what happened but also their thought processes throughout the ordeal which are incredible especially Joe's as he obviously thought he was as good as dead. all that along with the recreation and scene footage of the mountains and the glacier and so on provide a really in depth story well worth watching imo.

Absolutely, survivors guilt is real. It happens to soldiers all too often. And I’d imagine this happened to him as well.
If I was Joe I'd be salty. Ironic "Simon and Joe drifted apart" I wonder why lol.
And be reminded with the release of the book and movie.

Do anyone of you know the movie, motion picture of Joe? Is there one made of there story?
@@jayisfedup6896 - It's called Touching the Void. You can find it in UA-cam.
99.99% of people today don’t judge him for his decision to cut the rope. I’d say 50% judge him for not looking into the crevice after he passed by it.
@@201hastings he did look in though, he even called Joe's name, but Joe was asleep.

I think it was in my late 20's when this started happening with some of my older, and more close relationships as they started marrying/moving/having kids/getting new careers and I was doing the same [minus the getting married and kids part- I'm just fine with my furbabies. My mom had my youngest sister when I was 16 and one of my closest friends (we have for sure drifted apart but mostly due to geography, I'm actually still very close with this friend) had a kid at 17 so whether I was at home or hanging out with friends, I've had my fill of babies for my lifetime lol]
Anyways, it was definitely a weird phase that for me personally I started to take hard because I didn't understand what was happening and thought maybe something was wrong with me or that I was unlikable and I rememeber finally just talking to one of my friends (the one who had the baby) and being like "yo, what happened with our friend group and am I to blame at all?" And I had no clue but everyone else in my circles were kinda going through the same thing. I managed to make it to hunting cabin were the people inside almost shot me thinking I was a bear trying to get inside. Granted after two weeks I was pretty animalistic at that point, trying to get inside with a tree branch I found. The women there is what broke me down though, leg in a hastily made splint one arm in a sling made from my boxers. I just collapsed and cried hysterically.
Then i get itch right in middle of my back. Driving me nuts. Then wouldnt you know it i get a diarehea attack! And my phone starts ringing and its my pain in ass wife!

What is the movie name. Into the Void?

Tami is an absolute beast. That’s some unbelievable sailing and survival instinct.
He knew it was a race against time to get back to camp before Simon got it all packed up and left assuming Joe was dead. His struggle to crawl across several miles of sketchy glacial ice and get back to camp in time was epic. i saw a doc on this one 🙂
