    During WWII, my great grandfather was stuck in a tank for about 2 days after he lost a battle somewhere, not quite sure where exactly. Eventually, he started to lose it from isolation and dehydration. He shot off a round at a passing rabbit, which obviously alerted nearby nazis. He was captured and brought back to one of the camps. However, he had learned German back in school, and he managed to convince the nazis he was a German spy sent to spy on the americans. One nazi whacked him in the knee with the butt of his gun, and my grandfather shouted "Ack!", like a German. That convinced the nazis he was German and he escaped. Probably the greatest moment in my family's history
    Edit: Forgot to mention! After his tank went down, he actually dragged a fellow soldier out of the tank, but since he was temporarily blinded by the grenade, he had no clue who it was. When his vision came back, he realized the dude's legs were blown off and had died. It was at that point when he climbed back into the tank and hunkered down.

      Was this the same soldier who used enough rifles and grenades to hold off an entire Nazi battalion from sieging a city? I feel like that guy had just as crazy of a life. If it was the same guy, it was kind of brushed off as not being very impressive in the early part of the video...but yeah, some guy did that. Any gun he found, he would use against Nazis, and any grenades, he would consistently lob in random areas where the Nazis were nearby so they retreated.

    Thanks for this story John. It made me remember my great grandad, his name was Joseph , he got captured by the nazis 3 times, and he got out all 3 times,and went back to fight, even tho the 3rd time he actually got shrapnals from a grenade that hit him, but he just went on like a machine. He lived a long and happy life till age 85 and I look at him as one of the best role models ever. He was a wonderful loving person, and had a lot of friends even at his old age. I feel lucky that I could know him for a little bit as I was growing up.

      My grandfather who lived to 81, fought alongside the British, Canadians, and French (He was American) on D-Day. He later fought in the bloody and exhausting battle of the bulge which he was shot twice. He saved two people, and due to the brutality of the fighting, he dug a whole in the snow to save himself and possibly the two other people. He was awarded Purple Heart but never told my father who he’d been very close with until he was on his death bed.

      @@jarednoll9699 You're getting "To Hell and Back" mixed up. That's about 1LT Audie Murphy of the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.
      There are films (Great Escape) inspired BY Joseph Beyrle's life and exploits. But there are no films about his life directly.
      Reminder that Hollywood considered Audie Murphy's exploits incredibly super human (taking on a full German frontal assault of an SS Armored Company on a burning M10 with just the .50 to hold them off with, while directing artillery fire with his field telephone, covering the withdrawal of his platoon... Alone. This, occurring in Southern France. Or grabbing an enemy MG42 and rushing another MG42 position with supporting infantry, by himself, and destroying the position plus its support, all because one of his few surviving friends took a fatal wound to the skull and toppled into the once previously occupied enemy foxhole).
      Now imagine hearing of Joseph Beyrle's life and exploits. Hollywood in the late 40's, going into the 50's, before Marvel and DC became mainstream superhero entertainment, would be considered an outright fabricated Department of War propaganda piece.

It is very difficult to change a tradition, but that change has to start somewhere, with someone.. and thats you. Your work is a new paradigm for alot of people. Some of those people don’t realize it.. yet.
    I can’t speak for your community, but I can speak as a Veteran, you are helping those who have been on the same path as you. . Thats more powerful than criticism.

    My grandfather dropped out of Texas A&M and enlisted during WW2 because he was afraid he’d be drafted into the army and he wanted to go into the Air Force. He was a navigator in a B24 Liberator Bomber. He flew 24 missions over Germany while stationed in England. We still have his air force journal where he documented what the target was, flack coverage, altitude, ships lost, mission duration, and temperature. We had it printed into a book of sorts so that we always have it. He was fortunate enough to hear James Stewart speak at a meeting of sorts to discuss an upcoming mission. He had a stutter and a great sense of humor. When going over logistics they were told that a 15% loss of ships was expected. James Stewart (while stuttering) said “Well we just aren’t willing to lose 15% sir.” May God bless our veterans. They have seen things we couldn’t even fathom. 🇺🇸 ❤️

      @@ix3755 My grandmother was a nurse in Germany and my grandfather was an American soldier stationed in a barracks across a small river from her and her crew of workers. They were both freshly 18. Her crew and his crew befriended each other and snuck out to hang out regularly, and my grandfather really liked my grandmother and asked her out on a date three times, to which she firmly said no. My grandmother eventually struck a deal with some friends where she would work on a cargo ship, and every stop they made she got to live somewhere new for a few months. She traveled the world like that, saw so many places and did so many incredible things over the next nearly four years. My grandfather finished his deployment in Germany and came back to the states, where he got stationed in the US in New York. The cargo ship carrying my grandmother was set to finally make its ways to the states and dock for a while in New York. When she got off the boat one of the first people she ran into was him, and he told her “after all these years and all this coincidence of being in the same place together again and you still won’t go on a date with me?” And it made her laugh. They went out together that weekend and have been together ever since. They’ve been married now for 60+ years, have three kids and six grandkids and 3 great grandkids, built businesses, built a home, and achieved all their dreams together. They’re amazing

      In spite of making it home, I'm sure no one who saw him again would have called him "fine and dandy" after his return, having gone through all of that. That sort of language, even though well-meaning, is actually pretty flippant. He was ALIVE, but make no mistake, he was forever changed. He wasn't the same man who went to war. Even today, soldiers who never see even an hour of combat return from Boot as a completely different person than the one who left. This being so, I'm sure he was as close to being a stranger to his loved ones as I would be by the time he returned. I know what you meant though, and the sentiment you intended to communicate, but one should be clear about such things. I'm sure the nightmares and spontaneous memories haunted him for the rest of his life. To say he was "fine and dandy"? Not an especially appropriate description.

    • @gleadhill79
      @gleadhill79 3 роки тому +10

      @@marcialavine1272 If you knew what I meant and understood the sentiment then why pick the comment apart like I've said something absolutely offensive and terrible? Honestly, its just not necessary. I wasn't being malicious or rude with what I was saying, I was just appreciating how much of a shock it must have been for the parents who had mourned their son for all that time thinking he was dead. I'm sorry it offended you so much, it wasn't intentional!

    • @marcialavine1272
      @marcialavine1272 3 роки тому +1

      @@gleadhill79 You left yourself open to interpretation by the choice of language you used. The fact that I understood your intent doesn't negate the fact that I had a different interpretation of that language. In this day and age when language is very routinely, openly, and intentionally misconstrued and then relayed by strangers to others, it may be of benefit to you to be informed of a correctable weakness in your written speech. The next time you wish to convey your thoughts might actually be of great import that you not be misunderstood, or have your thoughts open to intentional or unintentional misinterpretation. Wouldn't you rather be informed of this now, in a relatively unimportant conversation than when it might actually matter to you? I said your choice of words was flippant, and it was, to one person I know who has been affected by combat and made it home alive. They did not return as "fine and dandy". They thought you should know.
