Let me clarify. I AM NOT BOILING DOWN MAT'S OVERALL SUCCESS IN CROSSFIT SOLELY TO HIS ABILITY IN WEIGHTLIFTING. What I have observed is that typically, CrossFitters train with improper loading and coaching towards the lifts. Mat is not only an example of how to lift but how to load, program, and eventually succeed in being a better WEIGHTLIFTER.
You all probably dont give a shit but does someone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can offer me
Last Summer I was out of town and looking for a gym to do some lifting while away from home. I was taken in with open arms by a Crossfit box for a ridiculously low fee. They even told me they were fine with deadlifts. Granted they did make me put mats underneath the weights but I can say with confidence that Crossfit saved my gains. Thank you Crossfit.
The crazy thing is that unlike Mat, Tia wasn't a weightlifter before CrossFit. She learned it from the ground up relatively not that long ago. Gives hope to us who discovered weightlifting in our late after our 20's.
Crossfit could be a very interesting sport if they took advice from the best of the sports they use for their competitions. I would call it an intersport as ecology is an interscience.
The key to getting better at any olympic lift is to protect the technique / form. There are so many very strong people out that get easily out lifted simply because they don't have good technique on their lifts.
love you videos zack. I'm training CrossFit and weightlifting 5-6 days a week as a 15-year-old Swedish boy I'm not great at all but I love the sport. I have been to the hospital in 3 days and I'm not gonna be able to train for a month!! so that's sad but I'm gonna try to recover as good and fast as possible so I could go back as strong as possible. sorry for very bad English
Ya. And Matt even admits that 1RM lifts (or heavy singles) are different than cycling weight. Problem i think with most crossfitters (myself included) is that we have wayyyy more practice cycling that we do with heavy weights.
Really appreciate what you said about rolling through the arches of the feet and keeping your toes nailed down, I'm going to pay attention to that at the gym tomorrow!
@@zacktelander See, you say that and I know what you mean, Tia's technique looks a lot less "aesthetic" than Mat's. But I don't understand how one judges technique off of its aesthetics alone. I would be very interested in hearing some further criticism on her technique because she ticks a lot of boxes for me: 1. Trains as a weightlifter (same coach as Mat, and although she only started to train weightlifting much later on than him, she's trained specifically for weightlifting with weightlifting only coaches). 2. Is consistent in her movement (Minor deviations, but look at her clean and jerks going from 195 to 270 lbs at the rogue invitational. That's 16 lifts which all look very similar, no misses nor even near misses.). 3. Doesn't miss (I don't know when I've last seen her miss a lift which is more than I can say for many weightlifters. Of course I don't know about her training but I would speculate it's similar to her competitions in that regard). 4. She's technically sound (moves quickly, doesn't shoot the hips - although she does have a little bit of an "uppercut" moving from her first to her second pull, but so does Loredana Toma, Luis Mosquera etc.) 5. Lifts heavy ass weights. Compare her to someone like Rebeka Koha: They have very similar squat numbers (150 kg recorded for both, could probably both do just slightly heavier at their best), are about equal in bodyweight and, surprisingly, are very close in their clean and jerk maxes. Snatches may be a different matter but truthfully, Tia just has not maxed out her snatch in competition in over 2 years, arguably she didn't even max her snatch at the commonwealth games in 2018. For the clean and jerk, Rebeka has recorded 124 kg which is just 2 kg more than Tia's 122 kg. And this even though Tia has not focused on weightlifting in 4 years. The main difference between the two seems to be that Rebeka's lifts look better, which they arguably do, but in the sport of weightlifting, that's not supposed to count for anything. The fact of the matter is that many of these aesthetic differences arise from different limb lengths, hip socket or shoulder joint shape etc. and aren't due to poor training or faulty coaching. Don't get me wrong, I really really love the sport of weightlifting and since I do not train to compete, aesthetics do matter to me personally and I want my lifts to look "good", aside from wanting to lift better. But weightlifters actually are extremely snobby when it comes to the looks of lifts and while I of course understand that technique is everything in weightlifting, technique far too often is confused with aesthetics. Tia, in my opinion, is actually a great example that you do not necessarily need to start weightlifting at 12 years old, although it might be helpful. As long as you train well and have the physical talents, you can become a really good weightlifter even without specialising in that area. The fact that she could easily get top ten in her weight class at the world championships is supposed to make weightlifters reflect on wether they are actually doing the right things, wether they are training the way they should, and wether being stuck up clowns bashing on the technique of people who lift more than them has helped them progress the sport.
Love your channel you should do more essay type vids compared to these commentary style. Ik they take more time and effort but they are really good. I still love these type of vids tho
Are folks overlooking the fact that Mat may be staying in the squat position for so long so he can exercise his stabilizing muscles and working on his balance? Notice how he rocks forward and back while in the bottom position. That's where most lifters LOSE the weight cause they are used to hitting the low position and IMMEDIATELY trying to rise up even if their body may not be in a perfect position. And tell Mat to use COLLARS.
Zack, I primarily train as a CrossFitter. What program of yours would you recommend? I am a patreon member, and have run the technique and capacity program before
Hi Zack, funny thing , i started crossfit a month ago, never lifted "properly" before and today while executing some clean & Jerk, warm up drills etc etc , i felt it connected really well for the clean the same "contact" spot as the Snatch and the coach immediately said i needed to extend more, since i started watching some videos i noticed pepople have different spots, and as the video shows Mat exntends his hips but it did not seem that much. Appears you share the same opinion, right ?
How should weightlifting be used to supplement a powerlifting program. I like cleaning but I can’t yet snatch because of overhead mobility and my technique isn’t great in either. How do I get good at the lifts without sacrificing the big 3 and how do I program them in once I get better?
That's not optimal, you should maybe do a 4 month powerlifting meso and 2 month weightlifting meso whilst still doing 2 days of work for the other discipline during the focus on the other one.
Need to start watching more of your content as well as find a coach near me. Im a college athlete, and want to gain some strength/explosiveness from weight lifting.
Should really talk about the max clean event from the CrossFit games two years ago. I would live to here what you think about the form by Matt or any other athlete there.
Hey Zack, I'm just beginning the process of learning (and eventually mastering) the Olympic lifts. I train powerlifting full time and have 3 light sessions a week one focusing on each movement, snatch, jerk, clean. Then a forth day which is my full day where I train both snatch a clean & jerk with no powerlifting afterwards. My PR's are 215, and 295 currently, both set when I was not training the Olympic lifts at all. Right now my working weight is 135, and 185 which is about 62% of my 1RM's. Because I am still very new would the loading recommendation change from 70-80%? Should I jump to 70% or can I stay at 62%? Plan is to gradually work up 5lbs a meso as this is not the priority at all.
