One of my favorite things is that religion proves evolution in a conceptual way because religions themselves evolve! The vast diversity of "only truth" beliefs doesn't merely parallel biological diversity, but the history of how those all arose and continue to arise is a good analog for mutation and selection. What a great topic! And Forrest is always a delight.

The worst part about this is that religion should be taught in school because school needs to teach you about the world and the humans living in it and those humans quite often believe in religions. The problem is that a lot of fundamentalists want their religion presented in a devotional manner, and they'll play bait and switch.

48:00 (maybe just a hair before that) be careful about what you say... one point you say it is to make world better place but then tell people to find another state. That same argument (go to another state) is mouthed by Christians as well. We are falling back into the cult-like mind. Rather, just find a different teacher. ♡ But our passions get ahold of us and we just start rambling.... Either way, what a great conversation. I really enjoyed this a lot. Thank you to all.

I've never seen this channel before but saw Forrest so of course was going to watch😂 I also recognized the name from Forrest's Ask an Atheist video, that they referenced. I stumbled across Forrest's Reacteria series and watched for fun as a Christian that believed God was behind evolution. Loved it! He's so much fun you watch. But I kept putting off watching his ask an atheist video, now I can admit it was because I was afraid to. I had my doubts but I wanted to hold onto my Christianity because of my family and the lifetime of indoctrination that had taught me that God was what gave me worth and purpose and comfort, and I couldn't imagine life without all that.
Then I into an argument with my mom over politics and she didn't like my progressive Christian arguments, and suggested God may send me to hell. I had a young toddler at that point and started to think about if God really would send a loving, devoted child to hell for trying their best to help people but getting it wrong???
With that turmoil in mind, I finally watched Forrest's video. He completely tore apart every defense, and every reason I had to even want to hold onto my faith. It was still a long process of reflection and study, but that was the official starting point for my deconstruction❤️ and I've never been mentally healthier.

Forrest, the reason why your old textbook only says "theory" and "believe" in the evolution chapters is because that was the only chapter interest groups actually bothered to review. Even today, McGraw-Hill and their editor partner companies are still compelled to distribute sections of evolution, politics and religion to specialty review board BETWEEN the peer review process among the authors and the later submission to the state boards they are supplying. Their lawyers redline through the text and then send a report to conservative watchdogs and state legislators/lobbyists to reject the publisher's editions until those changes have been made.

For the teacher about 29 minutes in. Do you teach all the creation myths? How could you be so disrespectful to all those other religions? At 50 minutes in I liked a story they had when covid was in full swing that some orangutans at a zoo were showing signs of depression when there were no visitors. The zookeepers let otters into the stream in the orangutan enclosure and the otters started messing with the orangutans and brought them out of their depression.

Otters like attention, so I assume they appreciated it, too.

Most believers don't need the public schools to meddle in what they can teach perfectly well at home or get at Sunday School.
It's all a lot of political grandstanding.

Because I have knowledge, I have no need for belief. People can believe anything but nobody can know everything. It's all of the things we don't know and are afraid of that cause people with a greater propensity for emotional and irrational decisions to ack out their beliefs.

I grew up in the uk. We have religious education in schools and always have. We don’t teach the bible, it would be better described as cultural education. We learn about the belief systems of mankind, how they influence history and modern issues. It’s about understanding of others. Ironically, this non separation seems to help create less religion in our society. That and we have philosophy as a subject that delves into the cosmology and argument for and against god. The point is that those lessons are very separate to any science we do. It isn’t an issue to do these things, in fact I’d say these classes are important and good for human understanding. It’s about how you do them though. If you are preaching and teaching the bible then that is t the same thing. America need a formal curriculum so everyone is leaning the basics and teachers can’t teach nonsense.

The Genesis/Garden of Eden pushes (1) credulity, (2) accepting rules regardless of whether they make sense. Designed to encourage people to accept the edicts of their dictatorial rulers, all for a promise that if they are good sheep they will be rewarded after they die😮

I believe humanity won't last much longer, certainly society as we know it. The mass migration that will be forced as the climate and earth becomes hostile to everything living there, as species die off and our food dies, and water is horded...... however I think that makes it more important to solve some of the "temporary" problems. Our lives have been pretty hard and unfair, the least we can do is give comfort as mass deaths happen. Worst case scenario people finally get motivated to solve bigger issues and work together.
Or maybe that's just hopeful wishing on my part because I'm poor and I know I'll be among the first "sacrificed" and forgotten and I'd like what time we have left not to be exploited by the rich and powerful. They obviously aren't trying to sustain the world.

Great video. Im a fan of FFRF and Forrest.
But I have to agree with birchdecoy. You really need to update these videos. I like watching FFRF videos but they are so drab. I can get through them but they can be so dry. Im not suggesting bowing to theatrics and emotional manipulation like religion does, but you need to make these videos more pleasant to watch.

It's an interview on Skype. It looks to me like what news programs like PBS Newshour frequently do, and it's clear from the success of many podcasts that there is definitely an audience for long form interviews. What do you suggest they do to spice it up?

If Forrest gave his best effort to deliver a dry and unengaging explanation, he would still be more interesting than most people. The man is fascinated by everything and it comes through clear as day in his body language.

I don't think trying to empathize with parents will work, because they think they have the truth, so won't entertain the idea. Regarding teaching other religions in the classroom if they want theirs.
