@@AdLaceStudios thanks so much for getting back to me. I did manage to work it out. You have to add your drum kit as a keyboard, not an instrument (go figure). Once I did that, I was able to get it working :) Thanks again!
I'm attempting to do this very thing and the midi mapping is terrible -- toms as ride, hihat close as some auxiliary percussion... Do you have the driver for the td11 installed on your machine? That may be the missing puzzle piece for me.
Zachary Smithingell - Thanks for the comment and your support! You need to make sure that your midi output settings in your drum brain are set to follow host. That might be the missing component.
@@AdLaceStudios ah yes! Probably super obvious, but I'm completely new at this. I'll give that a whack -- should set me straight. Thanks for this and your video!
The only benefit of buying a high end kit like you asked is if you plan on using the brain in a live situation. For example if you are just using it for recording in a home studio then you will most likely be using Superior Drummer or something similar to use as your tone engine in your DAW. Having said that if you are looking for velocity and feel when you play your kit you will want to at the very least get a kit that has mesh heads in my opinion. Try to stay away from the rubber pads if you can. The brains on these are pretty good but you will get more use out of your DAW and Superior or EZ drummer. I hope that helps and thanks for the support.
@@AdLaceStudios It does and you probably just saved me a mountain of money. I never used SD3. Is it a resource hog? I'm just getting into MIDI triggering for drums and I'm trying to sort out if my older machine can handle real time processing. It's a 2013 Mac Trash can. It has a 2.7 Ghz 12 core Xeon E5 and 32 GB of 1866 Mhz DDR3. Older hardware but do you think I'll get any lag? It runs TH-u Overloud fine but I suspect triggering a full kit may be more demanding. Perhaps a question for the SD folk?
By the way your video was enormously helpful. I also run Studio One. I would have never figured out how to configure a midi kit on my own. Thanks for that. I've been recording real drums and amps up to this point. Never even used a software keyboard. Solid tutorial.
Hi T. Your 2013 should be ok. It looks like you have it hot-rodded out pretty good from the specs. Yes SD3 is a resource hog. I run SD2 and EZD2 with no problems as far as resources go. I have upgraded my Mac but I ran this on my 2009 Mac for years with no issues. Here is a link to get your latency for midi offset configuration setup with your devices. ua-cam.com/video/unVeKf9TIhI/v-deo.html If you would like me to do a more in depth video explanation of how to lay your first drum track down via midi then free the resources up to finish up the song please let me know and I will schedule that video to be created.
I'm using a TD 30 but not Superior drummer. How do I get the instrument track to play my TD 30 back to me? Can't seem to find this info anywhere. I've set up an additional audio track for the outputs of the TD 30 so I can hear it when I play. I can see my recorded midi on the instrument track but it won trigger the TD 30 on play back.
Kentavious444 - Thanks for the comment and your support! Pretty sure you will to set up the midi out back to your TD30 so it can use that sound engine. Should be pretty straightforward. Let me know if you’ve figured it out as this comment was 3 months ago.
@@AdLaceStudios Thanx for getting back to me. A little late, but I appreciate the effort. My problem was with the external instruments settings in Studio One. In order to get playback I had to change the input to "none". Otherwise I could see it but not hear it.
@@AdLaceStudios Actually I figured it out. I was thrown off by the way Studio One routes the midi signal. I was confused about the difference of "new instrument" vs, "new keyboard" in the set up menu. As it turns out, I have to record the midi as a "new instrument" but to have it play back on my MOTIF XS or on my Roland TD 30 I have to set the instrument track from "new instrument" to "none". Otherwise it will not play back my external midi instruments. Took me awhile before I accidentally figured it out. There was no mention of this in the product manual or anywhere else I looked.
@@AdLaceStudios My pleasure. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has run across this problem. Most of the tutorials and things I've read on this always assume you use a virtual instrument when playing back midi. I have some great virtual instruments but I also have some great sounds on my keyboards and e-drums that I want to make use of.
DiggingUpThePast - Thanks for the comment and your support! I use Roland TD11KV that I purchased new about 8 years ago for $2000.00. I’m sure you can find a decent used kit a lot cheaper than this though.
@@AdLaceStudios - thank you for this reply. Your video was extremely helpful. I love Studio One. I’m assuming any drum kit will work that has a USB connection?
@DiggingUpThePast - actually you will want a drum kit with a midi output if you’re planning on using 3rd party engines such as Superior Drummer or EZ Drummer. Pretty sure a USB output will only support an audio file such as a going into your DAW. Having said that I’m also pretty sure that all electronic kits do have midi in/out. Your cable will be a midi to USB for connecting to your computer.
Felix Stenmark - Thanks for the comment and your support! It sure is. Just have to make sure you are selecting the brain as the source for your midi out.
my drums arent triggering midi sounds in my daw. they trigger midi when i have superior drummer open but trying to get it to do midi in my daw through ssd3 doesent work
@@AdLaceStudios so I have it as an instrument track with my td-07 kit set. Then when I drag the superior drummer it replaces the td-07 it won't let me have both in the track and my drums don't trigger the midi sounds
pranjal sarma - Thanks for the comment and your support! Superior Drummer is a product made by Toontrack but you don’t need it to record drums. You can use your QWERTY keyboard, a midi controller etc. or you can just draw the notes in with your pen tool. You will need to load a vst instrument such as the MaiTai or Presence as a sound engine or sequencer though.
Rich Weir - Thanks for the comment and your support! I see I missed this from the previous response. Where is it exactly you’re hung up? Should we set a FaceTime or something?
Why record as audio. You Drum controller should have a usb port. Connect the USB cable from drum controller to computer directly. now you can record as Midi, and you EZ Drummer. You can easily record into separate channels that will automatic split into tracks
John P Tenney - Thanks for the comment and your support! Not sure I follow the question? Yes you can use usb. I’m simply speaking to my Roland TD11KV and I always use midi because of latency issues. Just a personal preference

If you would like me to do a more in depth video explanation of how to lay your first drum track down via midi then free the resources up to finish up the song please let me know and I will schedule that video to be created.
@@Kentavious444 this is very cool to know ... thanks for that!
What if we don't have the USB Uno Midi Interface? It's pretty confusing.
can i do this with impact?
Great... I hope it works. this is the only thing holding up my music...

How did you make out?
What drum set are you using and the approximate $$$ of it if you care to share. I want to do exactly what you are doing here.
Your cable will be a midi to USB for connecting to your computer.
thank you so much
Is it possible to play and record the kits in the module into studio one?
Felix Stenmark - Thanks for the comment and your support!
It sure is. Just have to make sure you are selecting the brain as the source for your midi out.
my drums arent triggering midi sounds in my daw. they trigger midi when i have superior drummer open but trying to get it to do midi in my daw through ssd3 doesent work
You will need to drag that instrument onto your track
@@AdLaceStudios so I have it as an instrument track with my td-07 kit set. Then when I drag the superior drummer it replaces the td-07 it won't let me have both in the track and my drums don't trigger the midi sounds
Thanks a mill

thank you.
Thank you

Lol . MIDI to USB is probably my issue.. i don't have that peripheral 😂
this is driving me nuts... I hit my snare and I am getting a cymbal with it... I am ready to scream
How can I have the superior drummer?
Can we record without superior drummer, if yes then how ?
pranjal sarma - Thanks for the comment and your support!
You know what, this isn't working either and it really sucks I feel I wasted my money
Just a personal preference
...dumb ass of the day here tossing his two cents in: make sure to expand your tracks so you can select the correct device. I had my drum track set to my keyboard lol... Thanks so much for the video I wouldn't have caught that without your help! Just subbed :)
