i was actually waiting for you to show how to record all drum parts separately in daw. hopefully you will have a video on that
Super helpful video 👍Managed to make the link between electric kit and recording really easy, Stoked I can now make drum videos with ease 😎 Thank you for the helpful tips
Glad it helped you!
Just got a TD27 for my home studio. This video helped a lot. 🙏
Good!
This is the video I needed a year ago. Thank you! I feel so dumb now after learning how to use mulit track through SSD5. Geez lol THANKS BRO!!!!!
This got me up and running to do a lot of tracking for people, thanks so much
Awesome
Thankyou so much for taking the time to make this video. Incredibly helpful! Thanks :)
You’re welcome 😉
Fantastic info, thanks. I just got the vad 504. Looking forward to trying this out. Cheers
Sweet!
Love my TD 27 best investment I ever made was this kid.
Thank you so much. Your video is the best among all the 'Edrum -> PC' tutorials
Wow, thanks!
Wildly helpful! I just got mine yesterday and this video helps so much!
Thank you! I'm glad!
Thanks for all your videos regarding edrums it’s helped a lot I’ve got an ad5 brain for cymbals and a pearl mimic for drums
noice!
Most likely getting a TD27KV2 in the next month or so (unless they announce a successor to it alongside the new flagship) so this was very helpful thank you!
Also, loved the demo groove in general, but the ghost notes at 10:37 were really “extra nice” to my taste for whatever reason 😁
Thank you! I would wait. Looks like Roland is on a new release streak. I have a feeling some new mid-range module may be on the horizon.
@@demonicsweaters yeah that would be ideal. While I’m not pumped about subscriptions and the like, the whole round-robin stuff on the new td unit to help alleviate the machine gunning is desirable. Although I know I can just use ezdrummer or some other plugin if I want to bypass the Roland sounds, at least when it comes to recording
Just one thing, I could not find the installer after downloading, just a read me which tells you, plug the TD27 and wait. After 10 minutes you just open the device manager and go to the sounds, video and game controllers and it should be there. Great vid btw! Testing Reaper too!
Nice video. What's cool about the USB recording is that its all digital. I assume there is no encoding/decoding and that you are getting the exact wave forms directly from the td-27 engine.
There is also a third way to record now, directly to the SD card.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This video is excellent and you addressed literally every question I had! Did I mention, Thank you!
Great video, thanks for the info!
10/10 BUDDY!
Great! Thanks for the clear instruction! Nice work
Glad to help!
*Edit - I've just answered my own question regarding why I was hearing the module sounds instead of the VST sounds... I had to turn off "Local Control" under the MIDI settings on the module. I still have an issue however, that the volume of the triggered sounds from the module (when hitting the pads) is much lower in the headphones than when I click on the drums in SSD5.5.
Thanks very much for this video Justin, it's helped me tremendously! There is however something I'm struggling with, which I'm hoping you can provide some advice on... I'm really struggling with the VST approach, for use in a live situation. Currently, I'm just trying to do some testing at home with my headphones, but ultimately I'd like to use VST's live, to improve the sound of the drum kit (TD-17KV) which is provided by a local venue.
I've connected a Roland TD-27 module via USB to a laptop with Reaper v6.71 and SSD5.5 installed. I've setup the TD-27 module as a audio device in Reaper, and under "Midi hardware settings" I've enabled the TD-27 as an input and an output. My headphones are connected to the TD-27 module.
In SSD5.5, I can see that the kit is being triggered when I hit the pads... however, the issue is that the sound I'm hearing through the headphones is still the sound from the drum kit on the module, and not the VST.
Should I have the headphones plugged into the laptop instead? Or, are there settings I need to adjust on the module so that I can hear the VST sounds? Looking forward, how would I get the sounds from the module to the speakers in the venue?
Hope you can help!
P.S. I have spent hours looking for advice on setup for using VST's in a live situation, and can't find anything! Perhaps a good video for you to do(?)
There is a way to make the TD27 work as both audio and MIDI. Turn off local control, then select the TD27 as both your audio interface and MIDI interface in your DAW, now the TD27 output will play the sounds from your computer. Live you can just use the L/R outputs of the module to go direct to the PA.
@@demonicsweaters thank you! Do you have any thoughts on why the volume of the triggered sounds from the module (when hitting the pads) is much lower in the headphones than when I click on the drums (with the mouse) in SSD5.5?
Thanks for your video. The audio I recorded from the TD to Cubase is chopped, Like when you need more samples. I selected 2048 and still it is chopped. any suggestion? Thanks!
Great video. Do you have a video on how i can route overheads or room to direct ?
I don't, unfortunately I don't have the TD-27 anymore either
Good one, Justin!
Any chance you could share how you routed your room sounds in the TDK module? I could never figure it out...
Thank you for the tutorial I learned a lot. Do you use Abelton for some of your recordings as well?
Yes, I use mostly Ableton, Reaper, and sometimes FL Studio
thanks for this tutorial
As always, great content my dude.
I’m using a Mac, it doesn’t give me the option to multi track record like your video shows. Module is set to vendor, and software up to date. Mac has td27 driver. Any suggestions?
hmm, that's odd. It should. You might have to activate them somewhere in settings.
@ ugh, great! I’d best start investigating……..
Thank you!!!
In your above example if you wanted to swap out a cymbal in the track you'd recorded, does EZ drummer let you do that and them export all the individual tracks to WAVs with the new Cymbal?
You can swap cymbals in EZ Drummer if that is what you are asking.
Thanks for this video - really good. One thing I have noticed is that the TD27 driver seems only to output over USB at 44.1Khz. This initially caused me an issue using the inbuilt Audio Interface, as the original track was recorded at 96Khz (it played half speed). Apparently the TD-27 can output at 96Khz but I have never worked out how to do it. Do you know?
On linux multichannel recording works without a driver (all 28 channels, tested with jack and ardour). MIDI seems to work too.
oh that's awesome. Thanks for letting us know!
Yes sir! I double confirm this
Would be cool to run a VST like EZ drummer from something like a raspberry pi and link it to the Roland kit to save using a laptop
I would like a video to learn how to record with the td 27 roland the 28 separate individual tracks how to make the settings of the td27 and on the various pc daw softwere (reper audacity etc etc) thanks
Hello! How did you get the TD-27 to recognize your hi-hat controller? I have one for VH-11 and it's essentially a paperweight.
do you have the right trigger settings in the module?
came for drums left smelling great
hehe
This video was so wildly helpful, you have no idea. MIDI to me is basically rocket science. I don't understand it in the slightest. Knowing i can record the sound direct from the e-drums makes a world of difference.
Question: Do you know if I am able to hook the TD27 to the audio interface, as well as plug headphones into the interface and hear what i am playing/recording. Or would I only be able to hear what i am playing through headphones directly plugged into the TD27 Module?
The reason I ask: I want to be able to hook the TD27 up to interface, and have my friends hook up (Bass and Guitar), and be able to all play & record and hear ourselves though headphones. This way we don't have to play through amps and we can record through reaper what ever we play. I hope this multi level question isn't too confusing. Thank You!
You would need to have the headphones plugged into the audio interface. Unless it was just you, then you can use the TD-27 as an interface itself
Thanks for the video. When you record in USB Multichanel, do you manage to also have your own EQ/Compo ? When i recorded it that way, only the master channel have my EQ/Ambiance, but every separate channel as the sound dry. That's sad. Is there something you would recommend ? Thank you very much
They're supposed to record dry, you can record the fx channel on it's own too. But it's better dry then you can process every track individually to taste.
@@demonicsweaters thanks for your answer !
Thanks for the video, it helped a lot! I was wondering, is there any way to maintain the original sounds from the TD-27 in the MIDI track?
MIDI tracks do not contain sound. It's only MIDI data. You can record audio and MIDI at the same time though with USB.
@@demonicsweatersyes, and the question is: is it possible to "apply" the sound from the TD-27 to the midi track, so that I can work with that? Is there a plugin with the sounds from the TD-27?
You can just run midi back out to the module. @@alessandropinti4547
Where can I get this Sound? It´s great!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Hello, do you know of any tutorials for connecting a TD27 to Ableton?
The same applies in this video whatever daw you are using
One question no one is asking is why Roland still refuses to write the drivers for the ever increasing number of pro digital mixers that are able to do onboard multiple individual channel playback and processing from various DAWS via usb. The answer is simple. It would destroy Roland's ability to keep charging the earth for its flagship TD50X module's long outdated individual, physical jack audio outputs. And we wouldn't want them to feel embarrassed in any way about this, would we?
My son has Alesisi strike pro SE drum set and it has a feature where he can hit a tom or snare, then the module plays another musical instrument so it sounds like you’re playing along with somebody will a TD 27 do that also?
I recorded a whole song with the mono master and mono direct 1-2 inputs selected by accident...it sounds pretty good still and isn't obviously mono sounding. Would it sound beefier as stereo tracks? Or is it just that the spacial elements are better represented (toms/cymbols)?
What TD27 preset did you use? That was a nice drum kit sound.
custom made ;)
I couldn’t find the way how to route all the toms in to one track. Can anyone tell if it possible ? Thank you.
Hey man! I just got my TD27KV. My first real electronic drum set. I have surgery in a little over a week for a hand that has been in an accident. I have been trying to learn drums for over a year now but my hand just won't let me. So massive surgery. I won't even be able to use my thumb for a minimum of 8-10 weeks and probably 6 months it will be mostly useless. So, i am setting up for being a single handed drummer!
First, thanks for this. Exactly what i was looking for. I can't wait to get good recorded sounds!
Couple questions. Is EZ Drummer enough, or do you think it is worth it to get Superior?
This one is tricker probably.
I setup a kick pedal on a Roland KD65 i think it is, using it as a snare. I will still be using the snare, but there are times you need to be faster than one hand obviously.
Have a double pedal on main kick.
I want to use a set of hi hats at 12:00 on my snare. I started setting it up today, using just a 10" Alesus cymbal and Alesis HHC pedal (forget model but its the variable one).
I have the VH10 hats that came with it, but wanted the smaller size for my placement. Also didn't qant to use a remote hat for it, thus the Alesis stuff.
I may use the VH10 to the left if I have space left over for more finesse playing, but its crowded!
So all that for this question. How can i use that cymbal (or any pad) as a hi hat CLOSED sound all the time? I know you can make anything controlled by the HHC pedal, which is cool. But I cant figure out how i can do that so i can use those middle hats closed, while using my foot on the snare pedal.
Ideally I could also use a drum rim as an open or sizzle setting too. Yes, i want everything lol.
Sorry for the long drawn out comment. Hopefully the answer is something simple and not having to take a course on MIDI programming to accomplish this.
Keep up the great content. I know this is older but I went to your channel first for answers.
Sorry to hear about your hand, hope you make a speedy recovery! I think as far as using pedals for drums, it's probably best to use kick triggers rather than hi hats. EZ Drummer 3 is by far the best sounding plugin I've used, even much better sounding than SD3. SD3 allows a ton of tweaking though, so you can get it there too, but EZ3 right out of the box is killer!
@@demonicsweaters thanks man!
This is awesome! Great video, informative, and drumming skills. I would like to see how you are able to record all the different drums on each separate track because that is what I am trying to do. Also, is there a difference in sound by changing your drums to making it look like an actually drumset vs having the stock drums? Or is it just because of preference and having it feel like an actual drumset? Overall, great video!
Are there any specifications to look out for when buying a Windows laptop for this? I've been using a MacBook for a few years but it's died so I'm going to save money and move to windows! Thank you.
When I select master stereo nothing comes out, but I can select anything else from the list and it works. Is there a configuration in the TD-27 itself that allows this to register? Must be missing something
did you install the driver?
I’m trying to connect the Ddrum trigger interface so I can add more pads to my TD 27. Somebody said the TD 27 doesn’t have a percussion set so I can’t do anything like that. Do you know an easy way to do it or a less expensive way to do it?
Can this be used in a live situation? I have the td-27 but i really hate that they only have 3 bands of eq. then i have to eq the whole kit as one. Would be nice to bring the tracks in separate to Reaper, add plugins and eq to each channel and send back to my digital mixer. Been messing around with live professor with being able to use plugins live but would definitely be nice to have full control over each channel separately on the td-27 for live use.
Is it possible to have the midi trigger the roland drum sounds? Basically you record the sounds of the drum module but you can still quantize it with the midi information from the performance instead of using a drum plug in.
Yep, just select the module as the midi out in your daw
Can I send the midi I have recorded over USB back into the module to trigger the module drum sounds? If so, I cannot see how to do that in Studio One.
Yes, but I am not familiar with Studio One.
Hello love the channel I have a question, can you use a Roland older snare and ride cymbal with the module since it has a digital snare and ride..... Does it have a snare and ride cable on the cable snake...Thxs
Yeah it does, the digital gear is optional
Is there editor software, standalone or VST, for the TD-27?
No there's not.
Hey, looks like you have a pretty good knowledge of setting up edrums and using them with EZdrummer2. I have a TD27 which I would like to use with EZdrummer 2, but having trouble figuring out the settings. Do you have a video which provides this information? As you know, one wrong setting can blow up the whole thing.
Thanks for the great video and explanation. I have a question that I hope someone can help a noob to e-drums. If I make the td27 my main audio device, how do I record anything else simultaneously? For example, recording guitars, bass etc live at the same time as the drums? Thanks.
You would need a separate audio interface. Something like amzn.to/3xnxDW5
@@demonicsweaters Thanks for getting back to me so fast...Awesome! I already have an interface(s). UAD rack stuff. My problem is that I'm a guitarist (yikes!) and I'm new to the world of e-kits. My main sound interface is Universal Audio Thunderbolt. How can I record using that for the "analog" stuff and the TD27 module's USB multichannel at the same time? Thanks again!
Hey Demonic Sweaters how do you hook up your Roland TD-27 drum kit to GarageBand for your IPad because I am having trouble doing just that do you have any suggestions for that situation
You will have to set your driver to "Generic" inside your module. The 'vendor' one needs a specific driver to work and will only run on a computer.
@@demonicsweaters Oh okay thanks for the tip
I'm interested in recording audio from my module to the DAW- no MIDI sound substitution. I know that I need an audio interface but do I need something that has an input labelled as "line" or is the more common "instrument, mic, guitar" sufficient? I've seen a few older interfaces that allow for "pad" input options which I assume is the same as "line".
Pad is a db cut, usually used for hot mics. Line or instrument inputs should work fine.
It's not midi..... its MidiO™. Great Video can wait to get started on recording.
Thanks for the video! Is there a way to get audio from the USB connection *without* making the TD-27 the audio interface? I use a Presonus Quantum as my interface into Studio One and am curious If I can save the two 1/4" inputs (running kind of low). Thank you!
Depends on your system and DAW. If you're on MAC you can create an aggregate audio device.
I got the driver installed on my computer but when I wanna select TD-07 ( my V-drum) under Audio device it says no ASIO found...How can I fix it?
did you set the mode to 'vendor' in the module?
Thanks for this great video! it helped me a lot setting up my td-27, I have a question regarding editing on reaper - after I remove the usb cable from the computer, I am unable to playback the file and hear it via my headphones, If you happen to read this, would appreciate you letting me know what I may be doing wrong
You need to select the audio device of your headphones in the reaper settings
I used to always just record 1/4” out direct to my phone on my td25 but now that I have a td27 it doesn’t work with anything and I can’t figure out why 😞
it should be no different
Trying to record stereo audio, but when I select stereo input all the individual tracks are there but no master..
Can we also record on the SD card. Any particular setup?
I think? I don't have the TD-27 anymore, but I'm pretty sure you can. Check out the manual.
I'm on Mac and Reaper doesn't have these Audio Device settings. Where can I find it?
Under mac click 'reaper' in the toolbar, select preferences, then audio
My favourite thing about this module is being able to use the digital snare + ride. But .... I don't know if that justifies the cost of all all 3. I am not sure if Roland has a patent on that stuff or if we will see other brands coming out with digital pads as well. I also wonder what prevents Roland from making their next flagship all digital?
yeah, I've still never used any of the digital pads. I actually wish they made a smaller digital ride like a 15" or 16". I think 18" is cool, but really I don't need one that big and am fine with the smaller cymbals due to space. I think an all digital kit will be something we see eventually. I bet they hold the patents, or I think we'd see others selling them by now.
@@demonicsweaters I could only imagine the cost of the all digital Roland kit especially if they do have a lock on the patents for a while. And since I wouldn't want a second mortgage for that kit, I would probably just wait for the patents to expire and get the of the Alesis all Digital SE kit (SE meaning they will likely mess up the first pass then due to rushing then make it respectable with the second pass like they did with the strike 🤣 )
help please . an error is popping up on the screen as soon as i record track. its saying, error opening devices.
"the following midi inputs could not be open TD27" and "following midi outputs could not be open TD27" what should i do? its recording my drum beat but error keeps popping up. and i also have the driver in my pc. help thanksss
hmm, I'm not sure about that.
Say you have drumless play alongs on your smart phone, Can you record the Bluetooth audio as well as the drums through the usb?
no you can't
I want to record both video and sound from TD27 including the song played on my PC. how can we do it with better sound quality? I use camera app of windows 11, choosing input as Master TD-27 and the sound quality is so bad
The best way is to record the drums in a DAW then a video camera or iPhone for the video. Then sync them together in a video editor like Kdenlive.
need to record the td 27, audio thru usb ...after the fact recording to superior 3 .so with a midi file played back with other tracks that i laid with superior 3 ... help please. NOT in time
You are most likely experiencing some latency, try to lower your DAW's buffer setting as low as you can get it.
Hi!Can I record audio with the TD-07 module other than midi via usb? Thanks!
Yes you can! I recently got a TD-07 but haven't had a chance to make any videos on it. But they're great little modules, USB MIDI and Audio!
@@demonicsweaters Okay. Can you help me then? When I selecting input and output in the daw program in the ASIO TD-07 menu, it offers me only midi input and output, L and R, there are no options such as master out, audio out or something similar. I note that I have installed the TD-07 driver and switched to vendor.Tnx.
@@marko_99 The TD-07 only has 2 channels of audio, not multichannel like the TD-27. But you can still use L/R inputs and outputs.
@@demonicsweaters Okay I succeeded, but why does the daw program not register the sound that is connected to the aux input on module from an external audio source, only sound of drumset registering?Tnx!
@@marko_99 it's hardwired that way as far as I know. You can always just import your track into the DAW and mix it in that way.
Can you use Roland DT27 as a VST MIDI standalone without having EZ Drummer. Meaning recording midi then drag and drop midi file to turn into audio file on the fly. Just like you would do in EZ Drummer. So in a nutshell. Can you use the DT27 software as a VST PLUG IN ?
I'm not really sure I understand your question. VSTs are a software plugin. EZdrummer does not convert MIDI to audio, but uses the MIDI data to play samples that are part of the EZDrummer plugin. You could record the midi DATA then play it back through the TD-27 module if that is what you mean.
@@demonicsweaters i need help with this in prools td27 becomes my audio interface
I have a TD27 and would like to use superior drummer for sound. I would also like to plug in an amp. Do you use a MIDI cord to the audio interface then USB to the computer? I have not found any audio interfaces with a USB in and out.
Thanks
You can actually do all of that with just the usb cable on the td-27. It will allow you to run midi and audio at the same time. Then you can turn off local control in the module and the SD3 sounds can come right out of the module.
@@demonicsweaters What are the settings to make that happen? All of the videos I have seen show that you have to plug your headphones into your computer to get the sounds from the VST.
Thanks
@@jeffk9405 just select the TD-27 as your audio and midi device within your DAW. You'll need to install the Roland 'vendor' driver.
@@demonicsweaters Thanks. I am knew to electronic drums and have been playing acoustic drums for 25 years. I sold my acoustic drums about 5 years ago and just recently put together set of electronic drums with the TD27 module. I am getting familiar with Reaper and all its nuances. If I have any more ? I will reach out.
Thanks again for helping an old drummer.
I'm getting quite lost, in Reaper on a Macbook, it won't show the separate outputs. It will only record a collective stereo signal.
make sure you're on vender driver setting
Made sure. Figured it out, since I hadn't armed the track ready for recording, it wouldn't show the individual channel. My bad.
I got Windows 10, i downloaded the driver but reaper cant find the td27 as a driver, i can only get the data but no the audio on reaper, can someone help??
Try restarting, installing the driver again, then restart again. I had a similar issue with my TD-07, this solved it.
Can you program midi in your DAW and send it to the module to trigger the internal sounds?
Yep!
Thanks!
Hey is it possible to record and export to sd card and save as a file?
Having trouble exporting a recording from the module to and sd card
You should be able to. I don't have this module anymore, but I can do it in the TD-17.
Hi, is it possible to import a EZdrummer kit into the TD27? I want to use a kit in there
Not really. It would be extremely difficult.
@@demonicsweaters thanks for the reply! so the answer is send midi to the laptop, and output the audio from laptop+ezdrummer to your headphones, right?
@@romonaor Actually, you can use the TD-27 as an audio device and midi device at the same time. If you select it as both in whatever DAW you're using, the audio will come though the TD-27. It even has a mixer setting in the module that allows you to mix the levels to your liking. You can turn off local midi control so you don't hear the internal sounds of the TD-27!
Hello friend I got a td27 and I can't record via usb cable. I have downloaded Reaper Daw. Can you help me through team viewer on my pc? thanks!
You need to install the Roland usb driver, then select it within the module as 'vendor'. Then you should get MIDI and Audio over USB. You will also need to select it within the settings in Reaper.
