  • PSVR2 is getting an update to make it work on PC in 2024 but is it too late? The PS5 only vr headset getting PC support is incredible news for everyone who bought it, but VR is shifting focus dramatically this year to AR and Mixed Reality so is this update really enough to make much difference to PSVR2 sales? Let's find out.

VR isn't "shifting focus" to AR in the same way that normal, flat games didn't "shift focus" to VR when VR became readily available. The two things are distinct technologies with distinct use cases. It's never "too late" for support like this. Even if all PCVR development died today, which it obviously hasn't, there's still nearly a decade of VR content to play, as well as evergreen stuff like VRchat and heavily community driven games like H3VR. If anything the big boon of PCVR support for PSVR2 is that it totally eliminates the "which platform do I buy?" anxiety when picking a VR headset for someone who is interested. If you have a PC and a PS5 and were before debating which headset to get because you don't want to miss out on any games, well now the choice is easy. The PSVR2 is an amazing headset and nearly every review of the thing mentions how they wish it worked on PC. And now it does. In one move the PSVR2 becomes the best PCVR headset in its price range and becomes a semi-future-proof purchase. It'll make me use the thing more, because now I won't have to swap between a Rift S and PSVR2 depending on what game I'm in the mood for.

I think it could work out quite well, the fact you only need one screen (the PS VR) rather than a triple monitor setup and it gives you depth perception, you don't have to charge it, you don't have to sign in to Meta it's a very good option for PC gaming.

So sorry, I always say my prices like that because I’m used to Japanese yen prices being roughly 1 usd to 100 JPY. Force of bad habit. At the current exchange rate it’s nothing like that but since average wages haven’t really changed in Japan it feels like I’m still spending the equivalent of 7-800 usd.

One really cool game on PSVR2 that uses Eye-tracking as a gameplay mechanic is 'Before your eyes'. It originally came out on Steam and you would use your webcam and blink with your eyes to progress through the game. Although for me it didn't really work that well and I would often pause the game to recalibrate the webcam. Sounds amazing to play that game with proper eye-tracking.

    >How many people buying a psvr2 don't have any other headset, how many have a psvr2 and a pc that can run vr games?
I'm surprisingly close to that situation.
The only other vr headset I have is the PSVR1, and I bought it used, only had it for a few months. It only works with ps4 games... But it was enough for me to want a better vr experience.
The funny part is that I did NOT expect to buy OR have a ps5. I won one by chance, and then sony announced PSVR2. Way before that, back in 2020, I decided "I'm gonna go the pc route now. Don't want to be stuck on console". And I did. My pc is strong enough for pcvr nowadays.
Main issue is... Linux user. Best option for me is the Valve Index, and it's not even sold in my country. IF the pc support also expands to linux like most sony hardware did in the past, then it's a safer, cheaper, and overall good enough option. I'll buy one IF it turns out as a good linux option.

I love my PS5 and PSVR2, and I also have a Quest 2 that I like. To me, buying the PS5 and PSVR2 was so much cheaper than buying something like a Valve Index (1,000 USD) and then a crazy expensive computer with a 4090 video card that's over1,700 bucks, of course I could get a cheaper card, but my point is that the Valve Index headset alone is much more, also even if you don't play
VR games consoles are going to be cheaper than gaming pcs. Some people say you get more for your money with Quest 3, that's true but PSVR2 has oled lenses, it seems like at this price it should be easy to buy both, again this is not like buying a gaming PC and then a VR headset. I love the Quest 3, but since I got more games than I can handle, I'm going to wait for Quest 4.

Even for PC only VR users, PSVR2 just so happens to fit in very nicely into the PC VR market. Cheaper side is Quest 3 and more expensive side is Bigscreen Beyond/Valve index. Majority PC VR uses lighthouse tracking which is a pain to setup, and can get very expensive. Only other headset with inside-out tracking is the Quest. Eye tracking isn't really found stock on many headsets rn. OLED screens aren't super common yet. Adaptive triggers are only on Playstation so that'll be cool. It's a very nice middle ground with nearly premium features, aside from the lack of proper speakers and volume buttons for some reason.

The main problem with Quest 3 is the company behind it and those behind the company, in my meaningless opinion. They've played very dirty in the past with Facebook user data and literal psychological manipulation of the curated newsfeed that affected at least hundreds of thousands of users back in the day. So has Sony played dirty with DRM tricks and whatnot. The overall concern with SONY's hardware accessing the operating system, as I see it, is the potential biometric & environmental data that could be leaked to the OS & fed back to a 3rd party like with simple telemetry data. Once this data is out there, there's no going back and its potential misuse by a single bad actor is off the scale!!!!! Serious privacy concerns with all the current headsets. The driver module / firmware should be open sourced or verified safe somehow before this is even allowed to be considered, especially, for young people who don't understand the privacy concerns fully.

    • @NihongoGamer

Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality headsets were typically used for PC VR gaming. They were launched in 2017 and the most current of those was the HP Reverb G2 in 2020. There hasn't been a dedicated Tethered VR headset under $600 in the last 3 years other than the PSVR2 which was launched in 2023. Although the Meta Quest does offer a tethered experience it doesn't offer the same resolution and refresh rate 120Hz. Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality headsets are being deprecated in the next Windows 11 update 24H2 and apps aren't being updated after November 2026. The PSVR2 could offer an upgrade path to those moving on from the PC Mixed Reality headsets. The Windows Mixed Reality headsets also used a HDMI + USB-A connector cable to the headset for tethering the device. The PSVR2 will require a similar cable but instead require an adapter that connects a Display Port + USB-A connector with external power delivery of 12V for it's USB-C cable.

Sony isn't going to allow a PS5 app that streams VR content from your PC for a number of reasons, even if they got Valve to make it: no guarantees of wifi quality and latency leading to countless complaints, the idea of having wireless connection quality while still needing to be wired... I think everyone can agree that sounds at least a little stupid when we all know it could just be an adapter that they can sell you while bypassing the need to create and maintain a new app. And Sony has no precedent for developing an app on their consoles that would talk to your PC at that level. And remember how long it took for them to get Discord working on PS5? Just to get party chat with other platforms? Yeah no. We're getting an adapter. The iVRy guy is in denial.

From a number of reports, the cable on the PSVR2 is not hardwired but you need to dismantle the strap to replace it. For PSVR2 PC support there are 2 ways they could do it. They could just support streaming from the PC to a PS5 then to the headset or else they could support plugging the headset directly into a PC (potentially requiring a special dongle). If they go the streaming route then I doubt it will have much impact on PSVR2 sales. If they go the direct plug-in to PC route then it could help sales a bit more because people could buy one headset and use it with 2 platforms. The problem is that the Quest is cheaper and it can already be used to play both PCVR games and standalone games. It's a tough sell for the PSVR2. I think the best way to increase demand for the PSVR2 would be for Sony to release many future games as hybrid flat/VR to take advantage of the large flat gaming market while telling gamers that they can improve & upgrade their experiences by playing those same games in VR.

  • @SteveDavies80

6:51. Yes the USB cable can easily be replaced. Also the cable is actually a good thing.
External processing means that the graphical power is far superior to a standalone headset like quest.
And the picture quality and latency are far superior to someone wirelessly streaming from a PC.
The cable is very long and never gets in the way of my gaming.

Well, you can now inject VR into almost all UE 4/5 games, so you can play Guilty Gear Strive, Granblue or tekken 8 sitting right in front of your characters. Another thing is the 'how many people have a PC able to run VR games', you can run VR games on GTX10xx series just fine, so that's kind of a myth. Also wired doesn't mean 'bad', the loss on quality on wireless PCVR compared to the wired one is really noticeable.

We have no evidence that "it will be a bit more of a pain using it on your PC"--that's something we have to wait to see. 7 things actually that the PSVR2 has that Quest 3 doesn't--it can also play much better games on PS5, has much better haptic feedback in the controllers, adaptive triggers, headset rumble, OLED, better comfort out of the box, and on top of all that, has eye-tracking. There’s only a handful of decent higher spec’d complete games on PCVR and then a bunch of mostly unstable modded games as there’s never been a large enough userbase of PCVR players consistently buying higher spec’d games to support a healthy AAA game game library.
It’s nice to be able to play Alyx for people that haven’t played it already, but there’s no revolution it’s more of a stop gap to hold PS5 VR players over Playstation’s next wave of PSVR2 games on PS5.
Honestly, I think this is more for developers to be able to incorporate and test the eye tracking and foveated rendering early in the process so certification for PS5 isn’t as difficult and a lot more VR games can get published on PS5 much more quickly.

You failed to mention one of the best parts of the headset that in my opinion makes it better than any gaming headset out there and that’s the adaptive triggers, the headset vibration and the controller vibration(I know every controller has vibration but Sonys dual sense technology is better). Every time I use something other then my PSVR 2 it always feels like a cheaper shallower experience like when I shoot a gun and it doesn’t have resistance in the trigger or when I shoot a strong kickback shotgun and the headset doesn’t vibrate or when I’m falling out of the sky slowing picking up speed and the headset and controllers slowly vibrate more and more simulating my acceleration or the trigger having no resistance because my clip ran out of ammo etc etc I can go on and on but so many times on my quest 3 I had a big moment happen where I should’ve been wowed but instantly disappointed instead like when that big monster in Asgard Wrath 2 shook the earth as it walked over me I couldn’t help but sigh because of the controllers having a static vibration and that’s all. The first time I had a tall neck walk over me in Horizon Call of the Mountain on PSVR 2 was incredible gave me a feeling I hadn’t felt in a long time in vr because of all the haptic feedback immersing me. But anyway sorry for going on a little rant about how amazing psvr 2 is but yes it is a huge deal because of that stuff and also a potential I don’t think you even mentioned is with the eye tracking if it does work on PC then now people with low powered PC’s that might not even of been able to play vr on it will be able to probably run all the games at medium to high graphic/performance settings because of Dynamic Foveated Rendering!!! So yeah if all those things are supported this will be the best headset to have on console and PC hahaha!!!

I'd love the Psvr2 to also work on PC, HP Reverb is mixed reality, MS has announced in future windows its going to not support it, so PSVR2 not being mixed reality is a plus. Also, if games openly support it on PC, then they may decide to port to PS5. Smart move on Sonys part.

Think I'd honestly rather get this than the Quest 3. I have next to no interest in a headset like the Vision Pro to have virtual displays. To me those will always be displays that are lower quality than a real display and in that one's case you need to stream your console or PC to it adding streaming compression. I'd rather just use a real display and use VR when I want VR. And right now the PSVR2 does have the best specs of any real VR headsets other than the Beyond which is way out of my price bracket.

Buying a VR headset just for one game sounds crazy at first glance, but in fact a lot of people people do the same.
Some people buy a headset just to play Beat Saber.
I bought Valve Index and several Vive trackers just for VRChat. And I was surprised that actually I don't want to play Valve: Alyx or Boneworks (I bought those games, tried once and that's it).
Anyway I think PS VR 2 is coming to PC is good news, iVRy would not be a thing, if people had no interest for this.

I bought a Quest 2 just for RE4 VR when it launched. Played on my Quest maybe 10 times since then and Meta screwed the encoding on my Quest 2 when connected to PC through any method FOR 6 MONTHS (one update broke it, and it took 6 months for them to fix), but it was worth it.

As one who has the PSVR2, the lack of titles is a problem. So far, I have a whopping total of three, and one came with the headset. The PSVR1 had a large library of good titles (too bad Sony decided not to make them useable) and the VR2 may be the Vita VR headset, so I am glad Sony is giving us an option.

I tried the first PSVR in a store once, with a racing game, which… I’m not sure, but it might have been Project Cars 2. - Anyway, the resolution was so poor that I couldn’t see the down the track far enough and I needed to slow down every turn, like brake extra early, to see which way I had to go.
It was ridiculous and I was extremely underwhelmed. It was just like looking at a low-res screen inside of a box…
I’m sure it has improved massively over time, but if that was considered usable by people, damn my standards must be high.
I would prefer one of those high-end Pixma (or whatever) ones, with super wide FOVs and high resolutions. But then you’re gonna be paying the price of a high-end monitor.
In any case, I do think it’s a good thing they’re opening this up, because plenty of people will consider getting this for PC, if the price is right… and that might be a problem.

I guarantee you will not be able to plug your PSVR headset into a PC. The VR was designed to get people to buy a PS5.
The PC connectivity will work like the Quest. You will stream games from your desktop to a PS5 over your network.
This has pros and cons. For me, my PC is in a small room, so VR gaming there is not possible, and playing PCVR games in my huge living room is a bonus, and all my machines are hardwired so latency will be minimum.

Since psvr 2 will be capable to hook up to pc and pc has some of the best looking games wont that eliminate the mura in certain games. Not every game has mura and looks amazing on psvr2. Also playing vr games with the already existing pcvr headset owners, wont that increase player base, more multi players join a vr game thats not selling as well could get more play out of it, If more players join or am i missing something. Im just saying shouldnt pcvr players be excited about that?🤔

I went back because the games available on PS5 are better than standalone and the PSVR2's cable is light enough that it's acceptable. Imo as someone who knows a lot of semi-casual gamers, I think a lot of them would consider this over Quest headsets for one big reason
A lot of people don't want to buy products from FaceBook. No matter how much rebranding they do, they have little to no consumer trust or popularity. At least in my experience.
Still there are other headsets that people could choose over a PSVR2 for their PC for not a lot more, or potentially even for less...
Still, I think this will help sales somewhat. I had personally considered picking up a PSVR2 before, but couldn't justify it due to the lack of games. However, once it has PC compatibility it does suddenly seem like a good option, bc it'll work on my PC and my PS5, so it sort of feels like there's a small advantage in buying this headset as a result.
Though obviously this only really incentivizes people who own a good PC and a PS5 lol
Tbh I think Sony should do a price drop the day they add PC compatibility. If they can bring it closer to the Quest 3, i think people would at least consider it for the eye tracking, and phenomenal haptic feedback (rumble) in the controllers.
All in all, I think this will certainly give them a slight sales boost with no price cut. But if they want units to start moving quick, a price cut is probabaly the best option for them

"However, once it has PC compatibility it does suddenly seem like a good option, bc it'll work on my PC and my PS5, so it sort of feels like there's a small advantage in buying this headset as a result." With how few VR games are actually worth playing on any platform, it's not a small advantage imo--it's a pretty big one, depending on your taste for games.
