Super excited to see LeVar Burton tweeting about our 1st episode. He is a man of good-taste, and I'm glad we got his approval!!
Living the ultimate dream Mr. Joe! PBS and Joe Schenkenberg against the world!
A friend showed me a cool clip of sparks flying off of Steel Wool & I knew I wanted to give it a shot. Wasn't quite sure what visual elements we could create but it naturally went it the direction of "Warp Speed". I'm a lover of the Sci-Fi genre, so I am sure there were a few influences in my sub-conscious when creating.
Wow. THIS is a great PBS Digital Studios channel.
Glad to see your magic on UA-cam. Here's wishing you a bajillion well-deserved views.
Thanks for the kind works Vega!!! We try to make the most entertaining & informative videos as possible, it's a tough task. Glad u connected with "Shanks FX"!!!
We hope to get into all aspects of our film-making process. Just stay tuned and we will keep fitting more pieces to the puzzle with each episode.
I have a guy that is very good with creating all sorts of crazy sounds.
Nothing beats Actual Effects! Great vids Joey!
I'm glad that you're inspired by these, we are just trying to put out something that's informative but also cinematic as well. It's a tough act to juggle at times.
Thanks for checking it out, please share any stuff you come up with.
Absolutely amazing series! So inspiring, thank you so much for doing these. These videos actually mean a lot to me.
Song title is "Heavy" and is by Big Fok. You may be able to find it at his website BigFok dot com
Awesome, I am totally stunned... Thank you very much for all your ideas and pointers...
that's what's art is all about !! great work guys !!
Appreciate the tips Harry, keep em coming!! Always interesting in hearing ideas from the viewers.
Well done pieces. Creative. I love the bubbles and dry ice.
I definitely have to try this out with a colleague of mine! Thx for sharing! Beautiful!
Absolutely love everything I've seen so far. Just came across your video with the magnetic fluid, and I'm very glad I did. Very nice work. Perception creates Reality! All the musical choices have been very fitting, and thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you, sir!
I love this!!
So amazed you blow my mind!!!
wow
great work!!!
This is amazing.
Canon 60d and Canon 5d Mark II but would love to try this out with a GoPro!!
Haha, thanks for watching, sometimes people are in to much of a rush to read!!!
Great effects well done
Very creative!
Awesome!
PBS liked this, I saw it, I subscribed.
I love this stuff! Old school special effects. CGI is expensive too if you're an independent filmmaker. I'll be tuning in as often as I can . You do a good job on it too. Sort of reminds me of the beginnings of Foley sound, with the sound people actually creating the sounds they want with everyday objects, etc. Keep it up.
wonderful to watch. keep it up, I'll be here.
awesome.
Why didn't I discover this channel earlier?? Movies were somehow more magical when they did practical effects.. mainly because you didnt know how they made the effects.. And it looked much more organic, perhaps since 2010 did Digital Effects become os good you can't immediately see they are fake anymore.. Especially since everything is now filmed on digital cameras.. making everything look even more clinical.

Practical effects are way too complex and expensive and require a lot of equipment...with digital tools like Maya, which you don't have to pay full price, but you can rent for the week or month, you can achieve better effects for less cost
For the win!!
Very nice
Wonderful! You must have a 5D or 7D or something. My 60D get's so grainy at night! Thanks for the info and again, lovely work.
Wow you have some of the coolest Pan-Zoom-Tilt combinations I've ever seen. Did you make your own flexible tri-pod or something? And what's your favorite macro lens? I have a canon 100mm one but I'm looking for something better for this bug music video I'm filming soon.
I got the Canon 100mm as well, works fine for me!!!
This is Amazing! Though something i am curious about. With sparks flying everywhere is it dangerous to start a fire?
That is such an awesome fan, wish I could find one locally to use as a fan, not for this.
Very cool video Joe, thanks for making it.
I like where your mind is at Tiago. I would prefer to have blender that has glass that has no ripples and isn't too think so it won't distort the image if filming. But if I find a blender at a thrift store I may have to try this out!!!
A good trick is to use a 12v DC power supply, clip one lead to the (metal) fan motor... use the spindle to snag the steel wool. Then when the steel wool spins it will spread and flatten out, Then clip the other DC lead to a screwdriver and touch the steel wool in various spots. It will burn wherever you touch it. Makes nice spiral effects. BTW nice series, thanks.
Genius!
Great video! I have a question... I understand the long exposure for photography. But how do you create the video at 3:35?
Good question, that particular footage was done by shooting still frames with our Canon 5d. Shooting still frames gives you the ability to let the cameras shutter stay open for a longer time. Also, the quality of still images is much better compared to video.
If you don't mind me asking, what's the advantage of doing it this way, over using some fireworks being spun in the same way?

Upon entering this channel and watching this video im like a child entering a massive magical toy store. I dont know what to watch first... I accidentally find this channel cause im looking for a brilliant and easy way to realistically mimic the cosmos and outer space 0 _____0
Star Trek the motion picture. One effect always baffled me. When the enterprise goes to warp and the light streaks in the bridge during the "engine imbalance" sequence. How was that done?
A variation on the slit scan effecrt from 2001. You have a comnputer controlled camera with a specific computer controlled shutter and computer controlled objects which move in front of the camera.
Using multiple exposures, etc.
To see how just the slit scan worked, check out the video from filmmakerIQ.
Can you add any chemicals to change the color of the flame?
That's a good question Jarrod, if you can find out more info and send it over, we would consider taking a stab at it.
whats the song that starts @3:05 ? sounds nice. Love your work. =>
How did you make the sound effect in the sci-fly clip?
Only very minor compositing (laying clips overtop each other) for that one particular shot at the end.
Wow
how would you achieve the video @3:43
I wonder what it would look like to put one of those burning steelwools inside of a Blendtec blender...
0:29 - Which effect was that? (The shot right after the title card "No CGI")
That sound interesting, let us know how it goes!!!! :-))
Hi
How does steel burn? I know steel can get red hot and even melt, but without a heat source, it always cools off without burning, regardless of oxygen. "Steel wool" must not be made from steel?
Did you wet the grass before, cause wouldn't the Sparks start a fire?
How do you make the video go frame by frame with the light, I've tried to do it but it didn't workout
Long exposure + low frame rate
@3:05 music name what?please
