  • I attempt to make planets with food coloring , milk, and dish soap.
    This technique is very similar to my "Creating the Cosmos" episode (to.pbs.org/fxcosmos) but might be easier to do.
    The same principles are used, but everything is contained within the petri dish, which allows more control and really great visuals.
    Please share any of your creations using this technique and / or advice for interesting mixtures to get really cool reactions.
    Special thanks to Cameron Crest with Crest FX as he helped show me how to create believable shadows for the final planet composites.

    I just imagines how these would look with a really distorting fisheye lens... and some creative shadows.

    This tutorial is brilliant and so inspiring! I was planning a short film in another dimension and I didn't have a single idea how to do it so beautiful as you just did!

    Loved watching this video! Such an interesting combination and beautiful presentation. We just did a bacteria montage and experimented with recreating the look of some of the bacteria we found with stop motion and sculpting foam/clay for our intro. It was cool to see your take on this process.

    so I've watched your, "Creating the Cosmos" video and in both of the videos you have the space background and I was just curious to know how you made it.

    I make galaxies in my morning coffee using sugar-free flavored powdered creamers. I've made dead-ringers for M-81 and M-101.

    Hey, I know you are probably super busy working on your new film, however I was wondering if you could answer a quick question? When film these petri dish planets...do you use time lapse or slow motion or just film it "normally" for lack of a better word. Thank you in advance. Love everything you make! You rock! Keep it up!!!

    How are lighting these to get a 3d planet look?

    But one thing I would mention about the video is that the descriptions on how you did it are a bit vague. Perhaps a link to a webppage providing moe indepth details may help.

      I may do a more in-depth video next weeks episode diragusa , but it really is all about getting your hands dirty and experimenting.

    Could you list the stuff you need in the description? Just so it's easier to get what I need. Also what did you do for the first clip?

    I wonder if there would be a way to use this technique and 'force' different shapes or letters to form.

    It looks great trouble is it really is good for longer planet-wide shots now the fish tank is great for medium to close shots of say a planet. I say do a combination of both to see how it would play out on screen

    So much inspiration. The software you are using is after effects, right? Is there any other software that can do things like this with video? For my videos I use Magix Video Deluxe, but it's not that advanced I guess.

    • @ShanksFX1
      @ShanksFX1  9 років тому +1

      btracing If you can crop out your planet you can then add star fields in for your background. I was planning on doing another episode dealing with this issue this Wednesday.

  • @InCameraFX

    Are you top lighting these? Or lighting from underneath? Have you tried cutting some neutral density gel into a crescent, so as to give the flat sphere more of a 3D half in shadow effect?

    • @ShanksFX1
      @ShanksFX1  9 років тому

      Most of these are being lite from the top with a flashlight InCameraFX , good idea with cutting a crescent out of an ND , will have to give that a shot !!!

    • @InCameraFX
      @InCameraFX 9 років тому +1

      Please do. I've tried doing something similar. I read that the planets in the original "Alien" were done by mixing Acrylic black paint into a shallow puddle of oil based silver, and alowing it to swirl.... Then they just it it with colored gels. They got the perspective by projecting the image onto a white sphere, about the size of a beach ball.
