What is it?
The clue is in the name, it’s wool made out of steel wire. It’s really thin steel wires bundles together and it’s used for polishing and cleaning purposes. It’s ideally used with other metals for stripping, removing rust and general cleaning. There are different grades of steel wool and each serves a different purpose. We stock grade 0000 and grade 00, and they are both used for slightly different applications.
Grade 0000 steel wire wool
Grade 0000 steel wire wool is an ultra-fine wool that is perfect for polishing and cleaning delicate surfaces, for example, bronze and copper. You can also use this grade of steel wool with soapy water to polish porcelain, marble and glass without damaging and marking the surface. Grade 0000 is the thinnest grade of wire wool which makes it the best to use on metals. Using a fine, medium or coarse grade on metal will cause scratches and damage to the surface of the material.
Grade 00 steel wire wool
Grade 00 steel wire wool is the finest grade after grade 0000. It should be used to clean, smooth and prepare the wood or metal surfaces before you polish, wax or paint the surface. Using grade 00 steel wire wool with a suitable solvent will provide you with better results. Grade 00 steel wire wool is manufactured out of high-quality steel that is dust and crumble resistant.

0000 is great for cleaning a drum's chrome plated hardware (snare drum/toms' hoops, lugs, etc), that's touched with surface rust or whatever. (as long as it isn't pitted).

Really helpful! Many thanks for this video. I wasn't sure which grade of steel wool would work on my coffee table in helping to clean the wood in preparation of re-staining the pine a more warm shade rather than the 'yellowy' pine colour it is. Many thanks for your help!

You can also use grade 00 to prevent rodents. If looking to buy steel wool, just go for the best value for money.

Hi! Which grade steel wool would shed the least amount of dust/shards? I'm actually trying to use steel wool to create rust transfer on top of my art and I'd prefer whichever grade would shed the least. Thank you!

00 Grade will be the best, but make sure you buy a well know brands of steel wool as cheaper options will tend to crumble easier.

What’s the difference between Extra Fine & Super Fine Steel Wool? Which one is Finer?

We do not stock extra fine wool, but super fine is probably the most fine out of the two.
