A TOPIARY concept Visual Effects | follow-up to PRIMER | An Unmade Masterpiece

- A few months ago I stumbled upon a PDF document of concept art for the film A TOPIARY, which is from the same director that brought us the time travel film PRIMER.
I was amazed at A TOPIARY'S concept art and I thought that many of these objects and shapes could be created with a 3D printer. I have been on the fence about getting a 3D printer for years now but this inspired me to finally take the plunge and purchase one.
The A TOPIARY script is a fascinating read.
Advice, I recommend having the concept art PDF close by to help visualize the foreign and ever-expanding technology that is thrust upon the main characters.
There are many more engineering steps that come after the KNEE ASSEMBLY, which is where my video ends.
It would have been interesting to see what this film would have looked like if ever been made. Hopefully, this video will shed a light on some of the imaginative elements that this film would have consisted of.
If you want to take a deeper dive into the unmade film A TOPIARY, here are some links.

3D MODELS that I created :

I would love for the 3D printing community to try and create more printable models from the concept art PDF document. I'm just a beginner in the 3D printing world and I'm sure a more experienced person could take it to another level in design and detail of the prints.
If you are wondering how I did the 3D printing time-lapses, I used a program called Octoprint / Octoplase. It took me about a month to figure it out. Had to get a Raspberry Pi and program it. It was a nightmare of a time learning but I eventually got it working properly. Octolpase is a program that tells the print head to move out of the way for each layer of the print, so it's a nice smooth and clean-looking timelapse.
Thanks for watching guys!!!
It feels good to upload a new one, I know it's been a while.
all the best,

Oh man I had forgotten about this channel. What a lovely morning surprise, I hope we get to see you more regularly!!
The dude has a lot of creativity in him but his history of roughing up women isn’t helping his case for finding funding.
As a non-native English speaker, it was really hard for me to understand A Topiary's script, visualising the alien artifacts was also a challenge, this video allowed me to understand much more about the script. Thank you!
Glad it made it easier to understand. It still is a tough script to follow even for myself. Check out those Disregarding Henry videos I shared in the video description. He does a great job at explaining and breaking down the script. ua-cam.com/video/XF-i48BJgyo/v-deo.html
Great work.
Besides the fact "A Topiary" would've made for a great Carruth movie, and no one that knows about it hasn't stared at the concept art for ages, the actual production of this video in bringing these ideas to life is highly unique, and very skilled.
I especially liked your take on the animate creatures at the end.
I hope you produce more of these; investigating scripts and generating the corresponding art. Besides being good VFX practice for industry it has a lot of charm.
Best of luck.
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, it's a really interesting concept. Would love to see what someone like Alex Garland would do with this material. Also, I have thought this would make for an interesting VR experience if it never gets developed into traditional narrative film.
wow. I thought you disappeared! welcome back!
This was a great video man i really enjoyed it
He returns....
Yep, last video was Summer 2018, and to be honest I thought more time had past than that since last release.
How can this be waiting on producers? Sodenberg and Fincher signed on years ago. Carruth expects too high of a budget. It's the only logical explanation.
HES BACK OH YEAHHHH!!!!
I see the strandbeest on your desk: you sir, have good taste.
Shane is a fascinating filmmaker. It is just a shame investors don't get excited to make his very peculiar style of films.
It's a shame about the abuse allegations on Shane. Hopefully he's a good person, but it seems he's a real life monster.
So easy to call others monsters.

Oh... Now this is something I have not heard of at all.
One day the AI will make a movie from it. Why not- a graphic novel to start. Then- a whole CGI movie!
Then, the greedy Hollywood will come to pick the fruits and its hard work.
Interesting about Octolapse, I had just assumed you built the time lapse using long exposure photos.
Ahhh, that's not a bad idea, would have had some blurry elements around the frame, but that's an interesting technique / idea. I may have to try that out. Also, in Octolapse I wasn't able to do long exposure. Had to keep it around 1/40 for exposure time. Which was a bummer, I'm sure there is a way around it, just didn't real like going down that road. (for now atleast)
Hell yeah, he's back. You can't imagine how happy this makes me:)
I saw a long video where somebody went in depth about the story in the script. I think it's supposed to be an allegory for the Space Race and the eventual space-faring destiny of mankind.
Awesome! loved primer and love your work! So happy when I saw your vid pop up in my feed! :D
its like horizon zero + terminator prequel.
Someone use AI to make the movie plz
Awesome to see some visualizations from the script
I was really surprised and happy to see this upload.
Extremely well done, I love the concepts in this script.
Glad I turned the notifications on
Glad to see a new video! I saw Primer and Upstream Color at Sundance opening day. I am a fan.
I never knew about second movie. Its cool to see real objects. Its can be good looking in the movie. Maybe Netflix can produse film.
you won't believe this, but I remember when I was very young one of my playmates finding one of these in his backyard
Oh my gosh, welcome back!! Looking forward to future episodes.
yeah ! keep going happy your back
Good to be back, was real fun to make, just tinkered at night for several months until I finished it!
And it worth it ! I live in france and your work inspire me every day. Im a huge fan since the biginning. I think D.trumbull would be proud of you, for shure ;)
Thank you @@ShanksFX1
Worth the waiting...
So glad to see an update! Hope things are well!
holy shit he came back
This movie looks like it would have been amazing ...
It would have been one of a kind, Lord of the Flies meets E.T. , something a long those lines perhaps? I'm curious if Christopher Nolan has ever read this script.
I envy your artistic abilities
Just keep tweaking till it looks good is my approach, thanks for kind words though!
Return of the legend.
Saw you from your bottle cat video and occasionally come back to see if you returned. It’s great to see you back!
Great video but turns out the director of Primer is a terrible person.
This was the video that got me to *un*subscribe.
But why?
@@TimeTravelinc possibly because Shane Carruth is an abuser
One of my favorite chanels is back.
Also i feel there are less videos on this chanel.
I haven't removed any videos, should be the same number as before, just add 1 more with this one :-)
Excellent work 😊
