How to Make a Fire Wire [Easy Steel Wool Fireworks]

  • This is an old trick done with fine steel wool to make a huge spiraling shower of sparks. Rapid oxidation of iron contained in the fine strands of steel is an exothermic reaction hot enough to provide the sparks. The process results in black iron oxide (Fe3O4) and red iron oxide (Fe2O3), which is more commonly known as rust. The carbon content found in steel adds to the brilliance of the sparks.
000 or 0000 grade steel wool works best. Any courser and it will not burn properly. If it is fluffed up before igniting it will not burn as long, but it will throw off much thicker sparks. The first two shots in the video show firewires with steel wool that has been fluffed up in this way.
Because these use no self contained oxidizing agents like most fireworks, these are probably legal in most areas - But this does not mean it is smart to use them anywhere. They throw off many hot sparks and should therefore not be used in dry environments. Glasses of some kind are also necessary to avoid any sparks getting in the eyes. A wide brimmed hat or a hood is not a bad idea either to avoid getting spots burned in your hair.

@giggityboi637 Usually I do include the cost in the video description. These cost less than $1 to make. The price can go up or down depending on how much steel wool you want to use. They're cheap either way.

This video is almost 5 years old, and I remember coming to your channel and seeing this as your most recent upload. It's amazing how time flies, 2007 was 9 years ago which means NightHawkInLight has been a channel floating around in UA-cam for almost a decade. Another cool thing is that you can scroll down in the comment's and travel back through your channels history, it also shows how you progressed over time with your stuff in your videos.

It tends to be readily available, it's pretty flexible, it's easy to make the slip knot that is used for this, it has a melting point higher than the heat generated from the sparks, and it's relatively strong.

@Heinzx3 Yep, it does do that. I'll think about showing it in a future video.

@TheBombaman99 About as long as the video shows. It will burn longer if the pads are left compacted, but brighter if they are unrolled.

@giggityboi637 Thanks! I definitely will keep the videos coming.

...That's some RPG shit right there. "Sparking flail: 97 damage, 34 fire damage"

@wdkpstr17 I actually tried that in preparation for this video. The screen did not let out nearly as many sparks, and the wool quickly burned holes through it.

Thanks. I knew they were going to be using the clip, but I expected it to take a while longer.

@8602970 Cotton or wool clothing will be the most fireproof. Some sort of wire needs to be used because other types of string will burn or melt.

@redrhyn0 You have to be careful about that. The peat that the ground in marshes is made of is very flammable and can smolder for days. Better not to play with fire in a swamp, even when it's wet.

@DIECASTER Yeah I have a good idea of how that could be done, but I don't know if I will bring firearm modification related things onto this channel just because I'm not sure of what laws that may involve.

Pulling off one of these will surely impress people. It did on me, and it's so simple to make! Thanks Hawk!

@thebowlzack About $3 for 12 pads at walmart. I use 4 pads in my firewires, so about $1 a piece.

@redrhyn0 Only slightly. You just need to have good safety glasses and a hood on. Obviously it's not to be done in a dry environment either.

@michalchik Quite right. I included safety information in the video description, but perhaps it is not well enough in view. I will add an annotation directing viewers to the description.

Loved this simple little project! The first one fell off but fortunately the others did not after I redid my slipknot. Really cool trick to show off during the 4th with friends
