    Hi everyone, here's my addendum to this video:
    1) I was slightly inaccurate with my wording there at around 10:37 - Yamaha released a few synths build around their AN tech, not this card. The EX5 and AN1X had their own hardware designs.
    2) As some of you asked for this, the MIDI controller is by Intech, it's called GRID, and it's a great open source controller that not only can send sysex data, but can be programmed in LUA (with timers and loops) so it can really add functionality to any given synth ua-cam.com/video/4Xj_NJi-4mM/v-deo.html intech.studio/

    The reason folks get only 1/3 of the way through your videos is because we jump off to go get one of the gadgets you're showing us!! Seriously - your influence has opened my eyes and wallet to many things for which I'm thankful -- and my PL150-AN module has arrived and has been slotted into my Motif ES Rack. Dang it Floyd, every time I come here there's something else about which you pique my interest and now it's those darned Intech controllers. Anyway - I just came by to note my continued appreciation... ;)

    As an owner of an An1/x, one of the few relics from my early music carewr success in thr 90s ro early 2000s i can confirm that Yamaha's VA tech still holds up and blends seamlessly with real analogue hardware. On its own it is clearly digital, but in a mix it is at leaat as convincing as any attempt Roland has made in the last 40 years

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  3 місяці тому +2

      Agreed, it's rather digital sounding, but in a very distinct, powerful way. These sounds go very well with all kinds of musical styles.

    • @dyscotopia
      @dyscotopia 3 місяці тому

      According to some research I've done, the An1x does not have a PLG-150AN in it, but the card was an attempt to replicate that synth's engine while adding a couple things (like a supersaw) anf stripping others a way (like the bitimbrality). So they share a lineage, but are not the same and moat prefer the warmer an1/x sound. The AN200 is entirely based aroind the card for its VA sounds.
      Are you going to get the FM card? It is apparently quite good

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  3 місяці тому +3

      Yes, I was a bit inaccurate there. The EX5 had the same AN engine, but it was implemented on hardware as well, without the card. I should have said "built around the technology".

    The official AN Expert Editor maybe abandoned long ago but it still works perfectly on Windows 11, either standalone or as a plug-in of the Studio Manager software (or XGworks if youre into that).
    Editing is the most PITA with the PLG boards in general but the AN board is indeed a great sounding synth. I'd love to have the multi saw in my AN1x - but Yamaha never released an AN2x that could have done it.

    Good to see the old AN card getting some love in 2024. I still have two of these cards; one piggy-backed on a SW1000XG, the other in a AN200. I also have the Drum (DR) and DX cards, also riding on a pair of SW1000XGs. The downside of my setup is the need for three old computers to host them all! They still sound good to my ears. Great for music with a late '90s vibe.

    I have an S80 which can have up to 2 of these Yamaha boards added. Back in the day (2002 or so), I added the 150 PF to add piano polyphony because I recorded SMFs and played them through the S80, accompanying with the stock piano. The S80 only has 64 voices, so playing the piano from the 150-PF removed my accompany from the 64 voices, leaving the 64 voices for the entire SMF. I don't use the S80 live anymore, but it's my main practice keyboard. Every once in a while I think about adding a second board and look at the prices. The 150 PF is still about the same when I bought it, but every other one is like doubled. Of them all, the 150 AN would be the one I'd want. Thanks for the video - it's nice to hear that it still has it, even today!

    The oscillators on the AN are still some of the most flexible. FM, sync and VCO1 is actually two oscillators with multi saw and its own FM and sync. The problem, though, was the inability to save patches - The CS6R simply refused to save them on its save card, so I had to do everything from scratch every time I booted up the machine. And that basically killed it off for me. But the VST sounds promising! Is it possible to save patches with it somehow?

    BTW - I've got all the other PLG150 cards (and the the Japan only PLG100-SG which I really only got cause it was cheap, as its not really much use), but only 5 slots for them (well 6 if you count the SW100XG sound card - sadly no 64bit Windows drivers for this. Probably build a rack mount PC at some point and have a dual boot with windows XP 32bit or something.). You can probably get a Yamaha AN-200, remove the PLG-150-AN from it, sell the rest of the A-200 for spares.

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  3 місяці тому +1

      That used to be a thing, but not anymore. Those AN200 are pretty expensive now as well (plus they're nice and useful PLG150 frontends) ;-)

      Most of the AN-200s on the market have the board long since removed. 😥 And if not, it's very expensive.

      I used it, but as I'm collaborating on music with some people on the interwebs, Reaper it is for me. (Reaper is a very nice, low-profile DAW that also runs on Raspberry PI)

      @@mr_floydst I bought a Pi400 specifically because of the video you made a while back. I love it. Running Renoise on it flawlessly (which is also LUA programmable)
