42 degrees here in Chicagoland this morning. And almost like clock work, at 8:00 AM the best video that i'll watch all week of any kind pops up. The smell of bacon wafting through from the kitchen with some fresh french toast also awaiting me as i sit down to watch this small piece of heaven. Perfection for these almost 74 year old bones. Thanks Matt. I think i can speak for many here as to how truly special this is.
Even retired Bobbo I know you could hit the Kankakee, another suburban river. Went 2 weeks ago and there wasn't anyone else wading or fishing for the mile long stretch we fished. I do understand what you mean, hard to dodge the goofs.
@@brianathern9154 Yep. Have fished the Kank a lot over the last 30 years or so. Seen many changes to the river in that time. Can't say they've been positive ones though.
Just sitting here recovering from minor surgery, and hoping you'd post a new video, and there you are! Thanks for brightening my day, Matt. I really appreciate your channel - you're a keeper!
I’m getting my fishing gear ready on this Saturday morning watching the best fishing show on UA-cam. I’m headed to my cabin on the river out in the middle of nowhere going after smallies myself, and I have that exact grasshopper. Gonna try hi out this afternoon. Look forward to these days, gonna watch my fav college team play while at my cabin on the screened in porch, and as soon as the game is over walk down to the river and throw out that creek hopper!!! I appreciate the idea of the creek hopper today. It would have never crossed my mind !!! Great show !
I’ve caught almost every kind of fish that lives in NC on a grasshopper lure: largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, catfish, trout, and all kinds of panfish. Great videos! Keep em coming!
What a day! Anytime your on multiple 18”+ smallies your having a heck of a Day on the water. Awesome. That’s a sweet lure to get it done with too. Good stuff!
The crickhopper, the papa of that lure, is one of the all-time greats for creek and pond fishing. Versatile as both a topwater and crankbait for a variety of small fish.
Woohooo, thanks for taking us out to the lake today. Fall has to be my favorite time of the year to fish. They are HUNRGY this time of year for sure!. I remember many a time as a kid catching real grasshoppers to use as bait. Always a fun time. Stay safe.
Aloha from Waikiki. Been retired here 7 yrs now. Im from Colorado. I can't tell you how much i miss fishing for trout in my mountains. My kids all still live there so i have reasons to go back. Seeing how the weather is changing i dont miss the cold. Flew up to Wisconsin in January 4 yrs ago in board shorts and lasted 24 hrs before i came back. Brrr don't miss the cold ! Great watching you through the year as the seasons change. Wont be long you will be at 500m subs. Thats a great thing and you deserve it! God bless and be safe!
You have a new subscriber here, a British cousin of yours! I found your channel a couple of weeks back and love seeing the fish you guys can catch. I love predator fishing and one day hope to travel to the US to catch a Muskie!
Hello, love these videos, they're helpful and soothing. It's like you're actually there on the water in the boat with you, and it's a fun experience. Thank you.
One of my fondest memories was of my brother getting a cricket popper stuck on a tree branch. Caught a fish miraculously. So him and I were intentionally trying to get it stuck over the same branch and hopping it just over the water. Caught 4-5 fish that way. Thank you for the memory!
Great video - those are some nice bass - I love bass fishing. Used to fish for smallies on the Great Lakes and it was dynomite fishing. It could be the middle of day in July and 86 degrees and we would be hammering them all day along the break walls with light action rods and the fight was tremendous and great fun. Those memories will always be with me. Your videos are top notch and bring back those memories. Thx.
I really appreciate when you add the time of year and temperature in your videos. Very helpful for reference what type of lures/techniques might work near me
LOVE how you try any type of lure. I wasn't sure when I saw this lure, but DAMN, they hit you hard on it today. You got some great fish. Thanks for sharing with all of us.
One of the most consistently effective smallmouth lures I have ever used. Pop it, jerk it, crank it-catches fish. Only disadvantage is those tiny little trebles. Thanks for posting! Now, where is my black marabou road runner in this box...
Glad you got an immediate response from the fish. They may be moving over to wintering spots but that's a great lure choice. Fish a lot of ultralight and light lures on lighter gear. Crickhopper is an old favorite. It's a subtle but equal opportunity offender to the fish. Good video again
I’ve used those hoppers here in East Tennessee since they first came out. Used them in both lakes and rivers and had great success with them. The one with a diver lip down to 1-3 feet deep fished with a slow retrieve works awesome on the rivers here!
That Rebel Grasshopper is similar to their Pop-R-my favorite topwater lure that I've caught both my large and smallmouth PB's on. I did find that replacing the hooks to the next size up, and the split ring with a small to medium wire snap clip [non-swivel/a VMC Duolock snap] helped the action, tangles, and hooksets. Great video Matt. 👍
Ten years ago my brother brought the teey pop-r up to the BWCA and out fished my blue rapala and my shallow running crank bait. Black and silver. Every trip I start out with my old favorites then switch to the teeny pop-r
@@golfish8589 // Most everyone has a favorite lure(s) and with good reason-and I love hearing the reasons why. One night a group of us were sitting around telling lies; I mean each of us was "sharing the particulars" related to why it was our favorite lure [lol], like fishermen do. HA! That's awesome. Big Rat lure, large bird lure, or a small Crickhopper Popper... doesn't matter. Still gonna catch 17 - 20 inch Smallmouth and Largemouth bass. Just like retail! Location, location, location! ...Funny thing. I have at least 2 of those same lures in my arsenal. The pond I was fishing a lot had a fish kill two summers ago, and I had purchased it prior to that to try and pop some bigger bluegills, small bass and maybe even a few aggressive Crappie. I had one tied on once or twice AFTER the fish kill but never even got a hit. I haven't even tried them since because I felt like they were too big compared to the regular Crickhopper, and I wasn't even getting hit on that anymore. I may have to tie one on and give it a shot at a different pond. Thanks for sharing this one and restoring my hope in my purchase!
My wife and I have been really enjoying your videos. You fish some great places that look so peaceful and that kayak is a fab bit of kit! I’d love to have a kayak and do what you do but there’s nothing like the expanse of waterways in the uk that you have over there. Nothing that would be as remote and peaceful any ways and there’s just way too many people per square acre to be able to fully escape the sound of the rat race! So watching your videos with your nice chilled out voice is like a kinda therapy 😊 Keep em coming man they’re excellent!!!!
Monster quest! Instead of catching a dozen half pounders you catch a half dozen tanks. Man you prove your expertise every, well almost every, Saturday morning.
This channel makes me want to go fishing so badly, and it's torture because I just don't have the time these days. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment though, because I won't stop watching. Keep up the great work, buddy.

Always nice seeing you break out the ST. Croix LTBS. When I started following your channel they were your main rods until you moved over to the Baitcasting versions.
I’d still probably be using them if they didn’t get rid of all the 6’8” casting models. I like the BassX though and they’re more affordable to the average fisherman.
@ndyakangler Yep, I remember you've mentioned that before. Any luck on filing claims w/ ST. Croix yet? Looking forward to seeing that Sleeper Craw in action 😉
I’ve had a couple rods replaced years ago and didn’t have any issues. Two of the three LT casting rods I had as my main bass rods need to be repaired or replaced but I don’t want to send them in until I see they’re making the 6’8”s again.
Thanks for another awesome video. The og crickhopper (shallow diver) can be a great lure for Australian bass on summer nights. Might try and get hold of this popper version.
