Failed the MOT on a track rod end (rod end Bearing)? £10 easy fix! hour maximum. Here is how to remove the ball joint when the taper lock is already broken and the bolt just spins.
If the taper is not broken it should be much easier to get the nut off but then you will have to break the seal in the taper. Just hammer in a tongs or a ball joint splitter and keep pressure on it, then whack the side of the taper with a hammer. It should pop, if not use more force. You have to imagine that you are a 2.5 tonne loaded van pounding on it at 60 mph on a rough bumpy road to get an idea of how much force the suspension and steering components can handle. Whopping it with a sledge hammer is nothing! Whop away!

nah, did this job about 4 times on the van and never did tracking, never burned through tyres and no issues steering.
@@bootsowen good stuff, remembering turns is key I guess I did mine yesterday and the track rod nut doesn't seem to pull tight against the hub had to use a washer, think my 93 had a slightly bigger hole than the track rod. Tracking feels out and slight loose play in wheel, inner track rod ends could need doing now 🤔
AND! It doesn't matter how many turns or where the locknut is, it's the length of the finished job that counts, you need to be measuring not counting turns. Did you measure the length of the new joint and compare it with the old?
Why don't you take the time and effort to make a tutorial video instead of criticising!
1) Take the nut off all the way first time.
2) use a g clamp to force the taper down to apply/remove nut if necessary
what are you clamping across with the g clamp?
@@bootsowen I clamp above track rod ball and below steering knuckle. Funky angle but can get enough force to be able to turn nut on taper.

That's how it goes in the real world! they are called vise grips or mole wrenches, or locking grips.
Did it fail for the tie rod only? There is no way to pass in Switzerland with a brake rotor in that condition 😂
It was a long time ago, but I think so. The brakes are tested in the annual inspection, this is on a rolling road so if they work then you pass. I replaced these a few years later, couldn't notice a difference.

A nut splitter can be useful when the taper's let go.
It can be. And I had one. I had a bee in my bonnet about unscrewing this nut. Got there in the end. Grinder was the other option. I have a least damage philosophy.
Jeez, if you're replacing it then just cut the bugger off! Cutting disk or even hacksaw through above the nut, job done.....
Cut the nut off with a cutting disc in an angle grinder. Never work of this type of stuff without one close at hand.
