    Yeah, ibm style clit mice don't move far, the speed is dictated by the amount of pressure, not travel distance. Personally I really like them - years of ibm/Lenovo work laptops i guess.

      I thought HTC mostly used optical scrollers (or optical joysticks as they're apparently called) on their Android handsets, I remember a few their earliest handsets had an optical unit in it. Mechanical scroll balls are from the pre-Android era when BlackBerry popularized them. I have a few old A6366 handsets laying around that I've been meaning to harvest the modules out of, as there seems to be zero parts on the market for optical scrollers unlike how the market has retained mini scroll balls, for all I know these things might be HTC proprietary things as they seem to have been the major users of the optical scrollers.

    The USB port being on the right side explains why the pointing devices always connect to the right side of the board.

    • @0LoneTech
      @0LoneTech Рік тому +1

      Not really. The module connector is the same bus as the cable to the left side. Also, you can use the minuscule scroll trackball in the left key cluster to move the mouse, but you wouldn't want to because it has super low resolution.

  • @sir0herrbatka

    Those modules is a cool idea actually. Thumb clusters are useful.

  • @WyvernDotRed
    @WyvernDotRed Рік тому +1

    All those different mouse input modules are neat.
    Having recently switched to a trackball, that one seems tiny, I don't think it'd freespin well, which is what makes large movements easy with one.
    The trackpoint seems similar to the one in my ThinkPad laptop, I don't like them, they detect how much force you apply which apparently people can get accurate with, not for me.
    Such a trackpad looks like the Steam Deck's (including only tracking one finger), though it probably has no haptics. I don't mind trackpads but want to click with physical buttons above it (resembling a ThinkPad), which the keyboard itself seems to have.
    Very neat keyboard that's on my radar, though for now I'm good with my new New Model M and HUGE trackball I recently picked up.

  • @Crokto
    @Crokto Рік тому +4

    trackpoints work with a strain gauge - it detects how much force youre applying, but shouldnt perceptibly deflect under normal operation. would be cool to see you compare it to other trackpoints in the review, like on a thinkpad or on your m13 if you still have it

    • @salivala1852
      @salivala1852 Рік тому

      As a user of both thinkpads and the uhk + trackpoint module, I can contest that it's on-par, if not better. It's more inflexible, but has greater sensitivity. The greatest hurdle for me was transitioning from using my pointer to my thumb to control the trackpoint. You can use your pointer, but it requires your hand to be in a different position because of where the trackpoint is ( still less of a maneuver than using a mouse ).

    Now I am afraid of this trackball. Still waiting when it says: "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that".

  • @xaytana
    @xaytana Рік тому +5

    I'm curious what that trackball module is, probably the smallest I've seen if its optical, but I have a feeling it's an older style mechanical ball where that size was actually quite common. Sadly their site doesn't say what it is, nor do they have a spare part for anything but the ball in the module. With a bit of design work, these modules could've been easily ambidextrous minus the thumb cluster module due to key stagger and the bend it has, disappointing they didn't go with this nor do they offer ambi options. I also wish there was a modularity option for interior macros, inside TGB and YHN, I'm also under the opinion that the B should be optional to either side as I use either index for it, but having one or two additional macro columns would be nice, personally I can stretch two columns past G/H and my fingers aren't massively long, though I also understand hand posture contributes to how much stretch you can achieve. Personally I'd also rather take a southpaw 75 over a 60, as it gives you essential nav keys and the function row that also often acts as media keys under the fn layer, plus southpaw evenly distributes an 8u split to both sides. Honestly, the name of 'ultimate hacking keyboard' leaves my expectations of options much higher than what they're offering, a split keyboard with some thumb modules could honestly exist under any branding, there's nothing that leads this keyboard to be of its namesake.

      @@UltimateHackingKeyboard the UHK has been on my radar before, but that makes it even more intriguing to me.
      Not that I'd get another keyboard any time soon, but a trackball I can use like a laptop's trackpad seems fantastic for work that doesn't need too much accuracy.
      Which is pretty much anything but CAD and gaming, judging by how I use the DPI switch of my current trackball.

    I fracking hate this thing. For the price it is WAY WAY WAY not worth it. NOTHING ultimate about it. Garbage! Cheap keycaps, cheeeeeaaaaapppppp plastic case. For this price you should EASILY get an aluminum case instead of the VERY flimsy case this comes with. Sorry, but while I like the aesthetic, the build quality was so low that I feel scammed.

      We respect your opinion, but with all due respect, it doesn't reflect the opinions of the rest of our customers. Nobody else has complained about the double-shot PBT keycaps of the UHK, which are not considered cheap. According to the survey you have filled out (much appreciated), you strongly prefer keyboards like the Norbauer Heavy 6, which are made of big hunks of metal. As such, you're destined to be disappointed by the UHK due to its plastic case, even though its switches are mounted to a rigid steel plate, connected to precision-milled steel guides that hold the halves together - a solution that's neither cheap nor flimsy. We're sorry you're not satisfied with your UHK, and we welcome constructive criticism, but we wanted to point out that our customers do not echo your points.

      This comment reads a lot like "plastic bad, metal good", while there are a lot of types and quality grades in plastics and also metals for that matter, which I've been made aware of by being in the 3D printing hobby.
      I have never touched an UHK but it is a board that interests me, so I have looked at the previous review of the older version here.
      Subjectively, those keycaps look great, double-shot PBT apparently, almost as good as it gets. Especially as the font is uncompromised.
      Perhaps it's the standard looking profile, the thickness of the sides or sound of the material if loose that put you off them?
      For something like a keyboard, I'd personally prefer a high quality plastic case over a solid metal one, as that'd be easier to transport and in the case I do drop it, less destructive to the floor other parts protruding from the keyboard.
      In the previous review, the clicking buttons and the way the plastic was painted did look a bit cheap, but this says nothing about the underlying material and seems better in this revision.
      Also keep in mind that the custom connectors, snug split attachment systems and especially the module system would be expensive to implement.
      It's on my list of potential future investments as I've recently switched to a similar Unix layout and would love to tinker with a board like this, such systems being rare, thus a value add too.

      @@UltimateHackingKeyboard While it is true that prefer keyboards with more heft I do like poly boards, you mentioned Heavy 6, I have a poly version of that, along with a poly heavy grail and an incoming poly heavy 9. While I love the heavy series stuff, my keyboard preferences are very diverse, I love Brazen Studios for example. They are using alternative materials to alu to great success. My point about the plastic is that it feels like a childs toy. Like a rayguy you would get at a dollar store or something. It is definitely not at the quality of most boards at this price point. About the plate being precision milled, there is nothing ultimate about that. That is standard and par for the course, you need to be precise to have cherry switches clip in... You call yourself the ultimate, a bold claim that comes with expectations and a PRICE. When what you are is a mid tier split 60% keyboard with grade A accessories while claiming to be the ultimate (S grade). You charge to much for what you claim and do not meet expectations. I spent $600 with accessories to get the full experience and what I got was something that feels like a $150 amazon board. I am NOT joking you guys. The little dodads are nice and unique, but if the core board experience is not there, then it does not matter how good a module is.
      DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE SQUEEKY STABALIZERS. Guys guys guys, it is THE WORST. I just pulled out my UHKB from the box I threw it in after testing it (I put it back in the original packaging). Both the shift keys literally sound like they squeak, but a grinding squeak. Completely dry. nbd I thought, I will just take apart the case and lube (maybe upgrade) the stabs. There are THIRTEEN small screws on just the left side alone. I am guessing there is another screw underneath of the big ol sticker on the back, so how am I supposed to modify this thing? I mean if you are making the ultimate, then why should I need to mod it right out of the box? The stabs are clip on, except the pcb is not hot swap. So I need to some how disassemble this thing, desolder the switches to get the plate off, so that I can lube the clip on stabs. SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. _ULTIMATE_
      The keycaps are not good because, while they are technically double shot the first of those two shots are some of the cheapest I have ever seen. If you own one of these take off the shift keys or the large ctrl key. Lightly squeeze the two long sides together. Feel that? That's cheap plastic, which effects the sound and feel of every single keystroke you make. The worst keycaps I have ever used, bar none. No I am not just some GMK or die person. I like all sorts of keycaps. I am probably nearing 70 sets from all over the range. These are the worst of any keycaps I have seen or own.
      While your customer service is responsive, the experience of buying this keyboard is the worst out of fifty three other keyboards I have purchased. You constantly told me the order was coming soon and then moving the date, then telling me it is coming soon and then moving the date. I get it, the world is going to sheet and business is unpredictable. Fine, JUST DONT KEEP TELLING ME ITS COMING SOON. Nothing on your website said that nine months to receive the board. This was not a group buy or a go fund me or a kick starter. This was just a sale from a website.
      The only thing ultimate about this was the ultimate lesson that I learned about being careful what I purchase.
