Officials urge public to respect wildlife at La Jolla Cove

- An important reminder for anyone visiting La Jolla Cove - if you’re going to check out the wildlife, admire seals and sea lions from a distance.
This comes after a viral video showed a girl throwing a stone at a sea lion earlier in the week.
In the video, the animal is startled and lets out a growl before a lifeguard is heard asking the girl to leave.
“They crossed the line concerning the animal; they’re not here for us,” said San Diego resident Steve Palmer.

Perfect example of the sayings..."This is why we can't have nice things" and "It only takes one to ruin it for everyone".
Every time I see trash on a trail.
People like that shouldn't be allowed unsupervised in nature
Asians don't care about animals lol
God damn tourists
Stop "urging" and "demand" it. Charge them with large fines.
RIGHT!?!
I mean I know la jolla doesn't need the money but the smaller communities just sit there and write tickets as tourists come out with no chains in the snow. it's a cash cow and drives the point. If La Jolla takes pride in their natural beauty they need to protect it. Go down there on a busy day and you find retirees protecting seals while the cops jerk off in their tanks nearby.
@@wingdingdmetrius8025 one time I saw a volunteer in Hawaii trying to keep people from getting too close to the turtle and some people I assume were tourists ignored her.
@@bubbalo3388 Unfortunately tourists lack any respect, many think they're on vacation so they can do whatever they want. Or knowing that they'll be out of there in a week and the chance of any repercussion is low gives them confidence to act out.
I hate nasty people and children with no respect towards nature.
The stupidity of every single person standing around taking selfies. The epitome of what's wrong with our world.
Ikr. I'm amazed with all these fools none of them get accidentally picked off by sharks out there going after the seals and sea lions.

Why is it such a horrible thing that people are taking photographs?
@@zzzcocopepe Practically from inside the animals own nostril...
@@zzzcocopepe what part of throwing rocks is just "taking pictures?" You are also neglecting the fact that they are in a protected habitat, not just at some beach.
Why are humans permitted to walk down there in the sea lions home zone? Why do we not have rules to prevent this?
@A B When I was younger my dad lived in San Diego after my parents split. When we visited him, absolutely NO ONE but rangers, marine biologists, or veterinarians were allowed down there. He’d pack a lunch for my brother and I and the three of us would watch from up above. Now I live up north in Santa Cruz and can see them from the wharf. One does NOT need to be “all up in their business” so to speak to appreciate them.
I live close to this place and its been a nightmare for years. Law suits after law suits for many years of who gets what - do the seals get the entirety of the beach or do humans, some of which have been cruel, to the beach. It's absolutely shameful.
Please read up on "The Children's Pool" in La Jolla. You will find the history of this beach and the seals.
@@abernathymonsoon4638 thank you, yes I will read up on it.
@@abernathymonsoon4638 yeah, I live in wind and sea and have seen the harassment of the seals first hand. Its like people treat it like a zoo instead of a protected habitat. The children's pool is pretty pointless in my opinion.
In other areas one can get close but there is a barrier (San Francisco, Morro Bay, etc). No city wants to get sued. And with a lot of visitors it’s a huge liability.
No we don't need to share the area with them.. we need to close it off and let them have that area to themselves.
AGREE!
Folks stay up top at the overlook. Buy stuff from the vendors and walk a few steps away to eat n enjoy La Jolla’s opulence.
Nah

Best idea here. Maybe make chocolate nut act without the local authorities and inquire.
The sea lions in La Jolla Cove are famous and are a national treasure. If people don't know how to be respectful to wildlife and give them space, it's time to close the beach as some people said. This way they can watch from a safe distance. People throwing rocks at them should be fined $1,000.

They say it’s a “public” beach.
Why stop at closing down two beaches now for predator animals? Why not start releasing sharks into the beaches while people are swimming, just make sure to invite your terrorist friends and call it environmentally friendly or w/e bs the communist agenda comes up with.
It used to be closed off but people fought it, like there aren’t enough beaches in the area that people can use 🤬
@@SparklyStoner360 Wrong, They closed the Children's Pool area about a 1/4 mile away, this is a beach for everyone. Once a few kids or preferably adults get bit they will learn to keep their distance, this is evolution and humans are natural.
I was there today with my family. I am shocked to see why beach goer are there to take photo with these animals. Why is this beach even allowed people to be there! This enclosure needs to close in order for some of these people to stop bringing their children for not respecting wildlife animal. If you can’t watch your kid or let them have respect for any animals in the world then don’t bring them there. Leave them at the house!
People should Not be allowed near these animals at all.
Those predators shouldn't be allowed near humans, they already have their own beach as ridiculous as it is. Soon the idiot communists are going to be advocating releasing sharks into the beaches while people are swimming and some how blame the people who swim like the disgusting slime balls they are.

I agree, they need their space, they only know how to be defensive when they are being attacked by humans or other animals. Let's be logical Ban people, before someone dies. Hopefully someone with common sense who's responsible will make this Change for Everyone's Safety and peaceful respect for the sea lions. Should we build a wall? Or is that racist? Should we prosecute people that cross into this area?
Funny how animals have more rights than Americans

Maybe if they didn’t try to kick all the seals out of the cove that have been there forever to make another beach for humans, this would not of happened. Give the cove back to the seals. When I visited last year and saw the changes that were made it broke me heart. So many memories of coming to the cove and watching the seals play freely. Now they try to come back to their home and they get abused. So sad.
I’ve been visiting La Jolla for about 20 years now - it’s been one of my favorite places in the country to visit. Last time I visited in 2018, I was horrified at how tourists were on the beach, taking selfies with the sea lions and even touching them. Tourists are ruining one of the most beautiful & aw inspiring places in California. I vote close the beaches. They need to be protected.
Stupid selfish people just need to be banned from that area. My own species needs a few slaps in the head.
absolutely, they should be protected from humans (who are sadly increasingly losing their humanity)
I agree Lil B ❤.
Only takes one person to ruin it for everyone and I say close the beach for the animals but at least they are kicking individuals out and calling them out sometimes
I was down there on Wednesday. You can get a great view of the seals and sea lions on the walkway above the coves. The sea lions are hanging out along about a 1/2 mile stretch of beach and rocks. It is currently pupping season for the harbor seals and the beach that they like to rest on is closed to the public. I can't understand choosing to be close to a huge wild animal, especially with a child. People are such idiots.
No matter how many signs are put up and warnings are received, there's always people that learn the hard way.
The city council voted to close the beach when sea lions are present starting May 21.
@@ceg937 Good to hear. These sorts of things should be conditional anyway. People are treating this as a "right" when it's really a priviledge.
@@ceg937 yep. The sea lions r always there but pupping season starts at the beginning of summer. Prob should just keep it closed.
How are people even allowed close to the seals? In Norfolk here in England, you’re not allowed close to the seals and they’re protected under a Conservation Act. There are volunteer wardens, specially built viewing platforms and signs everywhere! Why can’t people figure out they’re wild animals and leave the Instagram photo for another photo of their bratty kids.
People are just disgusting no other way to describe it.
The only option right now may be to close the beach. These are large animals and they need their space. People getting too close is stressful for them and may cause them to attack humans.

The females either have pups or are getting ready to have em. The bulls will protect their families. No more folks on the sand at the cove.

@Joe Mama it’s how kids think until the stove turns out to actually be Hot. No excuses.
That child was old enough to understand that throwing a rock at the sea lion is cruel. Both the parents and the child need to be disciplined.
Disciplined? This nonsense goes on every sunny day in the cove. It’s tourists, it’s the weird cultural need for selfies. Close the cove.
@@iyamwhatiyam547 perhaps , 'disciplined' was not the effective word. Try fined, given harsh legal consequences. Honestly I'm surprised the cove is open to the public like that. Unless I'm thinking of a different cove in La Jolla, that cove was always closed several years back.
It’s crazy how close people are getting to them! I stayed on the pier and one for semi close to me and I got nervous since they’re wild, they’re BIG! People need to leave them alone and just enjoy watching them.
I am born and raised here in San Diego and these people all they do is infest La Jolla and for them to take it to another level is just down right ridiculous.
Those parents should be shamed mercilessly until they can keep track of their kid.
Exactly❤
So a public shaming? This nonsense goes on Every Day at the Cove. Ur just seeing it now. Close the cove to non residents.
Wow I am so grateful that I got to experience San Diego in the 90s. I remember swimming in that cove mid-morning on Saturdays, with maybe just a few other people there by 8am. We'd kayak out to the kelp beds and sometimes a sea lion or otter would pop up. The sea lions mostly hung out on the rocks. No one had camera phones, never saw any cases where people pursued the animals...living in a high-trust, culturally-cohesive society was great.
That’s the sad thing. There is still cultural cohesion. There is no shortage of rudeness. The actual culture has changed. Kids are only as good as the parents they emulate. The 90’s was simply a different time. There were workers rights and pensions. Now we have 401 k’s and right to hire, right to fire. The more the inner workings of society crumble, the more the outer layers we actually see will too. Everything is breaking down, but we brought ourselves here. That’s the problem with associating morals with politics or culture as well. No matter your politics or culture, there is right and there is wrong. Politics are simply how we deal with something once that has been evaluated. I think we’ve forgotten that. Audacity is rampant and it’s what gets public lands shut down and sold to private bidders. And the very ones to provoke it will be the first to publish a blog about a conspiracy theory that in no way involves them. Giving away their mana like it’s Halloween candy.

I hate that in the video the mom just stands around looking confused as if she didn’t just witness her child throwing a stone at an animal :(
Hope her parents get a hefty fine.. no phone, or video games for a month would suffice as punishment.
Do u think these permissive parents do consequences?
@@iyamwhatiyam547 who knows.. parents aren't around all the time.. kids do stuff like that.. hopefully we all outgrow such shenanigans.
Her mother was behind her just watching. Do you think she would discipline the child after she allowed it to happen in the first place? Most parents who care about their kids make sure they aren’t in danger in the first place
@@alexmunch9275 oh wow.. lazy parent.
As someone who lives like 20 minutes away and this place is a childhood staple, they need to close this shit down. There’s no need to be in their business and it’s such small horrible beaches for a “beach day” anyway. Should be for snorkel or kayak launch/access AT THE MOST
The fact that they closed off the other beach near the cove that use to be exclusively for sea lions was a huge mistake. Now the sea lions are basically sharing the beach with people and it’s getting dangerous
This area use to be blocked off and we were able to see the sea lions from afar. I think they should block the area again. Too many people don’t follow rules here
Those spectators don't seem like they are from CA--- or the USA🤔
If you called out the people that did this you’d be slandered in the media
Little girl and her parents are guilty.
So is every other person on that beach harassing those animals by surrounding them.
Close the area! No way an area where animals frequent should be open to the public
Really La Jolla you should put fence up and signs up to stay off the beach there and let people just watch from above. Let the Animals own the beach…….
I don’t live far from there. Please block it off until humanity starts acting BETTER! This really makes my blood boil.
They should face consequences to protect precious wildlife.
