unfortunately thats not it, city contracts are a big deal and they were prob going to give the job to a friend or family member who was going to bill 100x more then it should cost. their upset because someone lost their kickback. like the fact they said he should have gotten a permit is a joke. i work in construction and the idea of saying someone needs a permit to paint is a laughable and a money grab from the city. i know people who do construction for governments and they never have to get permits for basic cosmetic stuff.

@B Babbich It was reported to the city, and the city did nothing. So he did it he sanded it down and he painted it, more than the city did. If it was a priority to them, they should have done it, but they didn't, so a citizen did it. It looks far better now than it did before.

@B Babbich The lack of raised old paint edges in the pictures/video is clear evidence of the prep work having been done.

I was a band and orchestra musician back in high school, 1969, that Christmas, we formed and practiced a brass group playing Christmas music. The week before Christmas, we had off, so evenings, we'd meet at the school, then take off in a different area around the school playing Christmas music. Most every place we played, kids would join in and sing the carols and we'd stop and play when people came out, not loud, but enough so people knew we were there. Our last area to play, we got stopped by a local officer, told we were scaring a woman's cat, and had to stop, he also informed us that we'd need to get a permit to do this again, we were all seniors, so no chance there, but even spreading a little Christmas cheer required a city permit. How disgusting.

I'll tell you why the city is upset. It's because, SOMEBODY in the city hall was planning on paying one of his, or her buddy's to go and paint it for probably $50,000 dollars, so they could split it behind closed doors and this nice gentleman took that opportunity away by doing himself for the cost of a gallon of white paint. Liberal run city halls have NO PROBLEM overpaying their buddies on the side when the money belongs to the taxpayers and not coming out of THEIR OWN pockets. They're corrupt through their core and the citizens need to vote them all out and replace them.

The city to save money in the 1970’s stopped painting bus shelters in an attempt to save money, after a few years the shelters began to look ragged with chipped and peeling paint. A group of local volunteers began painting them using their own money to purchase the paint and needed supplies. The local Union filed a grievance with the city demanding that the city pay the union members as that was their job. City argued that the work was not requested by the city and had been done without permission they were not required to pay employees. Union took City to court and judge rules in favor of the union requiring the city to pay wages to employees. City had volunteers stop painting any further bus shelters to avoid future payouts!

I would often go to parks with my friends and their kids. It took us about 3 minutes to after our first park visit to go nuts from the squeaking of the swings. Since that day we have built a small "park kit" that includes a screwdriver, small ratchet with common sockets, and of course, a few small bottles of lubricant (dry, spray, and grease). We don't make a scene out of it but we take pride in keeping the playsets safe by tightening down anything loose and we help other parents stay sane by putting the appropriate lube on anything that squeaks. If you know what you are doing, make your community better instead of waiting for the government to do it for you.

Sadly it’s also about liability. Allergies to types of lubrication, using tools on public property (for instance slides and swings) can, in some cases, cause structural integrity issues. If we were more of a user beware, instead of litigious, society it wouldn’t matter. Unfortunately local governments are sued when something goes wrong and they need to show records of repair to defend themselves. I’m just saying in a sue-happy society things get dicey when someone “helps” with maintenance and repairs. Be mad at the people who take no responsibility for their actions, at the corruption that keeps things from getting done. IMO.

It is also about a loss of control. Statistics show politicians, upper management, and city administrators etc when analyzed the numbers prove the occurrence of psychopaths/sociopaths/ and narcissists triples at a minimum. One thing all three of these personality disorders have in common is they thrive and get off on control over others. By sanding and painting the benches and stairs, without permission, these three personality types often will view the handy man’s actions as a challenge to their authority, or even an attack on them personally. The reaction has the potential to get very ugly and dangerous very quickly depending on the individual whose authority has been threatened.
      A couple of examples
      1) Gov Whitmer(D) suspended an elderly barber’s license. The barber violated Whitmer’s business lockdown orders. The barber refused Welfare and worked instead. He was around 80 years old. Whitmer did this around the same time her own husband was also violating the orders as he tried to force a boat maintenance company to open their doors for him cause he was the governor’s husband. The business alerted the press. The Supreme Court of Michigan ruled Whitmer’s orders and actions to be unconstitutional and illegal by a vote of 7-0.
      2)
Robert Telles(D) Clark County Administrator stabbed to death
journalist Jeff German outside of German’s home in Las Vegas NV. German had written articles about Telles’ unethical behavior in his elected capacity. Telles’ job duties meant Telles was in charge of handling the assets of individuals that die without a will or family contacts.

We don’t work for them, they work for us. Guess they have to be reminded of that everyday. Maybe the citizens should get together and make sure every one of their offices or work areas has that concept posted for them to see on a daily basis.

A renter can ask for "Rent Reduction" for doing maintenance on the place they rent. This guy should ask for a reduction on his taxes. The City of San Diego lacks in basic repairs.

renters can put their rent into a court-ordered escrow account until repairs are made. they still have to pay into it, though.

@@sky.the.infinite it's court-ordered is my understanding, so there's a process involved. the process is something i would recommend googling on your way lest i tell you something wrong about it. i'm not trying to be lazy or pawn it off, i just don't want to impart bad information as i'm sure it differs from state to state.

The city owes him a thank you. A little paint on some stairs and benches is such a big deal. This city has way bigger problems to worry about, instead of focusing of this crap.

My sister was tired of driving down Kearny Villa RD when she was going home- furniture on the side of the road sometimes ending up in the street- her and some friends got a trailer to clean up- each of them got a ticket, hers was $300 and she was told that she’s taking jobs away from others by doing this- I will never understand why we can’t improve our neighborhood

Why would San Diego city be upset over someone doing the city's maintenance job? They're just mad that they didn't get to make some money off of the great neighbor who took his own time, effort and energy to make it look better without a permit. Thank you Joseph! You're a neighborhood hero. This is a learning, growth moment for the city of San Diego.

if this guy gets a ticket or anything other than a thank you people in San Diego need to find a way to ticket the council there over their inaction on the citys part to fix ANYTHING to include the roads, basic lighting and security, and the maintenance of the beaches to say the least.

I remember when a rest area/site seeing locations was closed in Arizona due to lack of funds (something like $1M), so a group of people put together an organization and raised the money, but the state still said NO. Clearly it was lack of conenvience, not lack of money that was the goal.
