The percussionist with him is Ralph McDonald... Also a BEAST. REALLY tasteful guy... never overplays.. really overlooked. And then Steve Gadd.. what can I even say
Steve knows how much to give an how much not to. It keeps everything flowing smooth an groovy. No, and I mean No hot dog-en here. He lets everyone breath.
Gadd is an awesome player. His dynamics are as good as I've seen/heard. I bet if ya had the chance to ask Steve if he "mastered his craft" he would say no way.
Sorry to be off topic but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would love any help you can give me.
The older I've gotten, the more I appreciate the beauty and skill of simply laying "the groove" down. I can still handle the acrobatic solos to a degree, but nothing compares to me anymore than simply mastering a groove so powerful and infectious that you've no other choice but to groove along with it.
Andy Nelson Buddy rich, Charly antolini, Dave weckl, Jojo mayer and you pick Steve gadd as the best drummer... He is awesome, but doesn't have much techincal abilities.
I've loved listening to, and playing this solo for 35 years. What Dr. Gadd concedes in speed and fireworks to his younger contemporaries he makes up for, and surpasses them in melodious musicality.
@@JeffWaldInteresting! yes it totally is a marching cadence which is why I felt suddenly at attention when he plays it haha. Great way to get peoples attention back to a conscious state after such a groovy solo
Favorite drummer. I mean Christ, just listen to how massive that silence at 2:42 is! Great musicians know it's just as much about the space as it is about the note.
He knew how to get a primal thump out of a drum as well as understanding them musically. That's why I love him. He is a consummate musician and a primal wild man beating out a beat to his fellow tribesmen all at once!
Yep, definitely. There's a subtlety to his playing that is often overlooked in amongst the "groove" element. Much more refinement than noticed on the first listen!
The perfect example of Professional musicians, Extremely talented musicians and those who don't think in terms like that at all. They either add to the composition or play nothing. If the whole tune is breathing beautifully then 1 ride bell 'ting' in 3 places may be it. Us normal musicians appreciate it and some may notice that something just seems like its not there yet. The Gadds, Smiths, Porcaro's and the like., instinctively know what's lacking and are able to finish that phrase to where that 'not quite right' is now a whole different pocket.
You realize that those are his drums right? I think the old video has a lot to do with the sound of the drums. I agree with you though. He's a freakin natural.
Yes, of course I realize that. I'm sorry, I should have clarified that his sound is unique. He doesn't choke out the drum lugs like a lot of drummers do. He can tune them his way, and sound great..other drummers would sound "flabby" with that tuning, in my opinion.
Gadd did a clinic at The Musician's Institute when I was there in '88. He had a very basic kit and it was all about the 'groove' and how that is the foundation, without a solid groove, all the fills and solos don't mean diddly. It was one of the most educational things I ever saw. Amazing!
I think MI has that posted as a 1989 clinic. I've watched that one many times - amazing. He was on a red Yamaha kit. Look it up and see if thats it or just another amazing clinic
What a Blessing to hear the unified groove of Ralph & Steve... I hear all diverse cultures coming together as one as they groove into bliss rhythm... I feel sanctified and free...
I've got the Grover Washington live at the bijou but Steve gadd not playing drums on their. It's still really good. The vibe& the beat just brilliant....he is the man. Mr. Gadd.
Speaking of percussion has anyone ever listened to Puente In Percussion which was released in 1956? There you have four of the greatest percussionists in one session. Imo.
he can make ANYTHING sound good. theres a recent video of him playing along to a jazz record with brushes on a pizza box. totally killed it. then picked up the box and walked off
Nice to see that Steve hasn't forgotten everything I taught him.....LOL And if you believe that, I have some oceanfront property for sale in Kansas. He is an absolute monster!! Legendary beast.
The percussionist with him is Ralph McDonald... Also a BEAST. REALLY tasteful guy... never overplays.. really overlooked. And then Steve Gadd.. what can I even say
i was going to say this is a DUO groove!
@@missbelled6700 EPIC!
We know Gadd's a god, can we talk about the percussionist whO MADE A COWBELL SOLO COOL
Gabe Figueroa Ralph McDonald -
YESSURR!!
Any time I'm sitting in on a jam session and there's a cowbell, I IMMEDIATELY start ripping off every lick from this solo. No shame here :D
We all need a little more cowbell in our lives
That’s great Ralph Macdonald on percussions
The perfect amount of cowbell
yessy
I'll be honest, it was sounding great but... I could've used a little more cowbell.
more cowbell!
No, MORE COWBELL
I have a fever
Steve Gadd feels it. He's one of the best ever, along with Jeff Porcaro - they can make anything sound good.
absolutely
Don't forget Billy Cobham
EPIC!
Gadd tells that watch what time it is.
SOOOO much passion in his playing.... You can tell playing is his true love....
Absolutely!
EPIC!
God dammit I love watching people that have mastered their craft
Steve knows how much to give an how much not to. It keeps everything flowing smooth an groovy. No, and I mean No hot dog-en here. He lets everyone breath.
something about it is special
Gadd is an awesome player. His dynamics are as good as I've seen/heard. I bet if ya had the chance to ask Steve if he "mastered his craft" he would say no way.

@Gus Carmelo instablaster :)
Gotta give it to the crowd. The sound of those snares with claps on top is majestic

I can still handle the acrobatic solos to a degree, but nothing compares to me anymore than simply mastering a groove so powerful and infectious that you've no other choice but to groove along with it.
this is one of my favorites. its just perfect
Love this comment Steve. I feel the same way about my playing. The more I progress, the more I just want to sit back and lay down a solid groove.
Well said Steve! It's been my life long journey as a musician to stay in this realm
EPIC!
And The Gaddmyster can do that better than anyone!!!!!!
Steve Gadd with Ralph Macdonald percussionist extraordinaire
After listening and practicing to every famous drummer, I come to the same conclusion, Steve Gadd is is the best drummer I have ever heard
Yes sir, I have to agree!
Andy Nelson Buddy rich, Charly antolini, Dave weckl, Jojo mayer and you pick Steve gadd as the best drummer... He is awesome, but doesn't have much techincal abilities.
He may not be as technical as the other aforementioned drummers, but his pocket engulfs all the others combined.
He has a lot of sensibility, but Steve Smith and Omar Hakim are not bad either
I can't stand Weckl, demo guy, simple and soulful is the key, groove is the key
Amazing STEVE GADD since STEELY DAN'S years!!!! so proud to follow him forever!!!!..........
I've loved listening to, and playing this solo for 35 years. What Dr. Gadd concedes in speed and fireworks to his younger contemporaries he makes up for, and surpasses them in melodious musicality.
Totally concur!
Weckl and Harrison are right there with him in musicality.
EPIC!
When it moves you to tears, it’s Gadd..
Pretty sure that was the most epic cowbell solo of all times.
I am watching this for the past 45 years and it never gets old! Pure Geniuses!
me too, me too... perfection
this is one of the solos i came here to see over n over again for years
very musical
i feel like dancing whenever i listen
EPIC!
the simple but banger fill he plays to go back into the song at 3:41 gets me so stoked to groove out
absolutely! its a marching cadence but on the kit and its basically him saying, "I'm done" 😎
@@JeffWaldInteresting! yes it totally is a marching cadence which is why I felt suddenly at attention when he plays it haha. Great way to get peoples attention back to a conscious state after such a groovy solo
@@urielseptim9860 Its cool b/c he's used it alot over the years. I remember hearing it somewhere else and I was like "hey!! that's the cadence!"
Favorite drummer. I mean Christ, just listen to how massive that silence at 2:42 is! Great musicians know it's just as much about the space as it is about the note.
Isn't that killer? I love how he uses space like that
EPIC!
4 minutes of pure bliss.
exactly!
EPIC!
The Power and the Glory, The Great Steve Gadd and the Percussion Phenom, Ralph McDonald!
Steve's Groove is out of this world.
Economy of motion perfectionist.
His phrasing is just so musical
It ALL fits so nicely together.
EPIC!
More cowbell, we need more cowbell.
Love how Steve Gadd moves around in the seat with the rhythm. He’s always done that.
its like he's dancing while he's playing, which I'd say he is!
A super clean drum solo that makes sense
I love how his phrasing is so crisp especially with that dry , punchy Gadd sound!! Gorgeous!! What a master player!! 👌🏻😎
He knew how to get a primal thump out of a drum as well as understanding them musically. That's why I love him. He is a consummate musician and a primal wild man beating out a beat to his fellow tribesmen all at once!
Steve is the Groove Machine
Anyone who works with Grover Cleveland JR is fantastic
By far my favourite Gadd solo vid I've seen... Just incredible how he was vibing with the percussionist. GADDDDDDDDD!!!!
The conga player knows his craft and Mr.
Gadd keeps up, never loosing the deep groove feel. Well done guys.
yeah, they totally killed this one. one of my favorites
Oh...
So THAT'S how you play drums.
Got it.
Wow! the power.. the feel...such a legend..
Yep, definitely. There's a subtlety to his playing that is often overlooked in amongst the "groove" element. Much more refinement than noticed on the first listen!
Steve Gadd is a tremendous all-around player. He is a fine reader too. He can swing and play Jazz as well. He and Steve Smith are two of my favorites.
Steve Gadd is a genius. There; I said it. And he's playing a cracked crash cymbal here.
I think he's playing 3 cracked cymbals , including the bottom hat
I thought he hit a mic!
The groove master. God I wish I knew what groove truly was years ago.
EPIC!
It’s perfect for the gig. It’s not too washy but it’s cracked enough to be dry.
I'm convinced that Steve could play on anyone's drums and make them sound the best. He can play on those "dry-sounding" skins and it sounds great!
+Nacho Man Randy Sandwich I totally agree brother!
You realize that those are his drums right? I think the old video has a lot to do with the sound of the drums. I agree with you though. He's a freakin natural.

That is just so beautifully played. So smooth and controlled but just oozing feel.

Speaking of percussion has anyone ever listened to Puente In Percussion which was released in 1956? There you have four of the greatest percussionists in one session. Imo.
That's how its done! Period! Steve Gadd forever
Steve is like a modern day Buddy Rich always insyn with his beats and runs. He has played with Grover Washington RIP on different gigs
Class👍
The drum meister and craftsman Steve Gadd
Amazing to see Steve Gadd playing chipped hi hats and broken cymbals, seriously groovy drummer all the same.
he can make ANYTHING sound good. theres a recent video of him playing along to a jazz record with brushes on a pizza box. totally killed it. then picked up the box and walked off
Gadd drums solo are like voices , and it breath litterally freely with a lot of pause and a wonderfull spacing mastering....if u know what i mean

It really is! For as dead sounding as they are, he makes them sound amazing
You can tell they rehearsed this! Gadd is still my favorite pro drummer.
Me too! Everything sounds so good, even when he's playing on old cracked cymbals and the drums so dead sounding
cowbell solo. wow
Gadd has soul.
Its just what i am looking for!)
