I’m a bit confused. Are the “moors” over in the UK like “peat bogs” (where they find dead, preserved people?) or are they just undeveloped, prairie-type, upland situations? Here in the NE US “moors” are generally boggy wetlands, not quite swamps but large meadows with vernal pools.
That is an amazing build. I was looking for a nice easy pond build for my porch and yours was the first video. PS you seem like a lovely dad, your kids must be so lucky to have you!
So pleased for you, you have worked so hard on your YT project and have said that you did other work too. Love your studio and beautiful house, well deserved and well done.
It’s not a weather issue it’s a legality thing as rice fish would thrive in the uks waterways and be incredibly invasive that’s why we can’t keep them outside over here
I'm looking into getting my mom a pond for her porch since her goldfish are outgrowing their indoor tanks. This was great inspo! Definitely one of my favorite videos of yours. Awesome seeing you scape something different than your typical aquariums.
Wow, that huge boring lawn NEEDS a huge pond built on it! Im quite surprised you havent built one already. It would look fantastic and breaks up the massive monotony of just grass everywhere :)
It's more of a family garden and didn't feel safe with water when the children were younger but my youngest is nearly 5 now so something kate and I have been discussing.
He could put an entire lake in that backyard! In the states anyone with a (swimming) pool is required to have a fence with a lock on the gate to prevent accidents. I assume it’s the same with a pond over a certain depth.
Make sure you learn how water moves across your backyard in a heavy donwfall so you don't end up with overflowing ponds and fish and plants doing a reenactment of the Great Escape. 😁I look forward to the future huge pond!
Nice one especially for people with smaller homes or apartment balcony. After this, maybe a backyard pond build next? I mean, thats a large backyard area you have there with a beautiful open background. 😜
I'd love to see most of that backyard turned into a permaculture garden. ^^ An herb spiral right off the deck would be lovely & the bottom section would tie into a small pond section for water herbs & fish. If you have the garden section closer to the house, it'll be easier to maintain & collect from daily. Put the boys to work learning how to grow & maintain things to live off of as well as having a sports area.
Perfect spot for viewing your pond. Now I’m going to have to pull mine out of the garage and set it up because I love yours. Martin, you have some beautiful fish!!
Your yard is so sunny and bright! You need some trees. Beautiful and full of fun possibilities. Ponds are so great, I hope you get a chance to put in your big one. I would love to see you scape one.
Frankly I’m surprised to see his grounds being so foliage-free. Not that I expected a thatched roof and ivy-covered walls but everyone I know in the UK with any workable outdoor space has a wonderful garden, the English are renown for it. I get the feeling that wifey isn’t the “outdoorsy/gardening” type.
Bro decided to do what he loves for a living, then realised he could own a castle. If that isn't the epitome of follow your dreams, taking that leap of faith.... then I don't know what is
Nice pond, the mini bog filter is super nice... and the surface agitation will take care of all the oxygenation, so the oxygenating plants will be out of work! I think the pond is a big small for Comet type goldfish, three fancy goldfish would be better. I don't know if there is some legal issues, but Rice fish would absolutely work in the pond. So would for example White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Zebra Danios. The pond is a perfect size for a rather big shoal of either of them. Of course, they would need to be kept inside from mid autumn to late spring, because the pond could freeze over, killing whatever fish in it, including goldfish.
MD, white cloud mountain minnows would be great for that pond. I'm about 50 miles up the M5 from your local Maidenhead Aquatics and I've had a group of six living in a small pond for over four years now!
I have a 90L (~22gallon) pond that I made from a mortar tub that’s isolated with insulation foam and covered with some wood panelling. Perfect to keep and breed various types of fish outside or even just to breed a bunch of live foods. Three months ago I put about 20 daphnia in my pond and now it’s filled with them. Just one swirl with a net gives me a ton of live food that’s perfectly healthy and didn’t cost me anything. I don’t even need to feed them since they consume algae that’s naturally growing in there.
That sized garden is just asking for a big pond build. Or a new studio to go up so your work is on your doorstep! Nice little kit though and something I could squeeze in my terrace yard!
Thanks, MD. Love the patio pond, and enjoyed the different content today. Good on you for keeping the kids out of the limelight. It's a strange ole world out there, after all. Curiuos though, what names the kids come up with. Anyhow, your uncle did a bang up job on the man cave! Looks amazing in there!
I live in Southsea and every morning on the way to work I pass a moat that has a large colony of marine sticklebacks and I can watch them for ages. I think at the first opportunity I shall buy a patio pond kit and get myself some 3 spine sticklebacks. Fascinating behaviour and the breeding males are very beautiful.
What you are doing is amazing and it really looks beautiful but here's something as a fellow beginner I got to learn that you need more than what you have rn for Golds and koi. Sure can be kept for lil amount of time but make sure to shift to likes of guppies or small shrimps.
I loved this video! Nice to see something a little different. :) I remember when I first started watching your channel and you had the tanks in the sheds, bit of an upgrade in garden since then, so much space! Good for you guys, it's been great watching you and your channel grow over the years. All that work paying off. 👌
Love your set up but there are definitely more stocking options if you are willing to winter it indoors . After visiting Thailand and seeing massive plant pots filled with plants and guppies ,then every ditch filled with wild guppies I decided to set up my own . I'm Scotland based so MUCH cooler and keep my guppies outside for half the year almost, moving them into the garden room when it started to get cooler . They are surprisingly hardly over the 4/5 years I've had it only lost a few to old age . It's a 900mm across terracotta pot with a huge bunch of lillie's and no filter, probably around 50 guppies in there just now . The population is self regulating , as the numbers get low more young survive . They also get a little bigger outside for some reason
MD three things, firstly beautiful house. I think most of us are thinking you or Kate should do a finance video now XD but lastly you should treat your decking. Looks ATM to be a raw finish which will suffer in the long term. If you leave it unfinished it looks nicer and brighter but will crack more easily with heat exposure and rain.
That would honestly be perfect for our screened porch/winter garden, whatever it's called area. The humidity is way too low and who doesn't need extra space for fish and plants :D
Bog filter is correct. Here in Australia I’ve found Ozponds very useful for pond and bog filter information and inspiration. We’re also able to stock some small native fish in our ponds too: pacific blue eyes, some of the rainbows... I wonder whether there’s any suitable local fish in the UK? I can think of a rewilding channel in the UK too who might be able to suggest some landscaping that would help you to get the maximum value from your pond, as having friendly habitat around it can increase the number of species that can use it. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your pond adventures!
I personally would not build a pond right at the bottom of the garden. I would certainly build a big pond but I would put it near to the house, ideally next to the decking and the seating area. If you put it at the bottom of the garden you'll very rarely visit it, if you want any sort of water feature involving moving water you'll have to run a power supply down the full length of the garden. Next to the house would be a lot easier to install and you'll be viewing it all the time.
Forgive me if this is inappropriate but you’re clearly loaded. Your house and property is stunning. What did you do before UA-cam? You clearly earned some decent coin.
Next time you visit Portugal, you should do a little meet and greet. Loads of fans of yours here, would love to shake your hand a share a Sagres with ya👍
Your home is amazing. I was very surprised to see 'lawn' and no greenhouse, raised veg beds etc too though! Come on MD you got an Acre there l reckon....get planting and growing your food!
You could also have added chinese danios (white clouds) and/or paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis), which do well in an outdoor pond and you have enough space to let them overwinter. Paradise fishing in an outdoor pond is truly one of the coolest things I have ever done in this area.
The Sweet flag iris (original “fleur de lis”) enjoy having “wet feet.” You might be able to grow a dwarf waterlily in that size pond but most require a much larger water surface. They also dislike turbulent water so a definite “no” with that filter. Parrot feathers are nice grown immersed or emersed and will cascade over the edge. I once grew a Chwan Basu (Sacred Lotus) in a container that size on a similar deck in the middle of NYC.
I have the same pond but with the fountain filter. Water lettuce apparently hates the cascading water so it kept on dying on me. Also loads of thread algae even though it's in the shade half of the day and it's full of plants and only three goldfish (I'm in NL so roughly same climate as you) Also a tip I had to learn the hard way, figure out what you will do with the fish in winter. Spoiler, they didn't hibernate like I was told so had to move the next fish into the house the next winter.
nice garden mate, i reckon that is crying out for two ponds - a nice nature pond at the back and a recreation/swim pond nearer the house, if you've spoken to Tanner then I'm sure you are aware of aquascape ponds 👍
This is my second season with container ponds. I'm big into gardening, I wanted a water garden with lily's, irises and water hyacinth. They look stunning. This year I have 2 ponds, and 2 planted out bird baths. No filters other than the plants. I tried to build one, but it failed miserably, a plumber I am not. The water is clear, no algae. I have solar pumps in all, 2 in the 110 gallon, for aeration. No fish, cause I have nowhere to put them in the winter. I would love a few fancy goldfish, but winter's in Michigan require the fish to be brought inside. I don't have an inground pond with a 4 ft depth for koi, which would be necessary to winter them outside. I got plastic floating fish for now. Plus with my health right now I'd feel like a giant shitbag if I died and no one remembered to take care of them. Last year I had 6 water features going. I slimmed down this year because I was supposed to have surgery next week, but my heart's gone bad, so it's been postponed. I pared down all my gardens this year. Enjoy summer tubbin !

@@MDFishTanksyou deserve it all buddy. 👍 Any hints on your plans for the rice fish? Just set up an indoor patio pond myself with rice fish.
The way he cuddles himself, "it'll be fine. It'll clear" 😂😂😂😂 I can totally relate 😶🌫
What you are doing is amazing and it really looks beautiful but here's something as a fellow beginner I got to learn that you need more than what you have rn for Golds and koi. Sure can be kept for lil amount of time but make sure to shift to likes of guppies or small shrimps.
Beautiful home yous have n the pond really does set it off .
I loved this video! Nice to see something a little different. :)
I remember when I first started watching your channel and you had the tanks in the sheds, bit of an upgrade in garden since then, so much space! Good for you guys, it's been great watching you and your channel grow over the years. All that work paying off. 👌
What a great yard to build a natural swimming pool on!
They also get a little bigger outside for some reason
awesome as always...so glad you explained light and darkness now I fully understand lol
Yey! Meet the new manager 😊Good for Martin for promotion! ( he's the same Martin, right? )
yep 😊😊
Right?! So Martin, looking forward to your channel! Where do we watch? When do we watch? I mean there's 😂tradition here!!
@@GenXHeart and can we see the ''pond'' you put in your garden please
MD three things, firstly beautiful house. I think most of us are thinking you or Kate should do a finance video now XD but lastly you should treat your decking. Looks ATM to be a raw finish which will suffer in the long term. If you leave it unfinished it looks nicer and brighter but will crack more easily with heat exposure and rain.
Should have out some white cloud mountain minnows in there.. they'd love it
Aye you're definitely winning at life with that home! Big house, man cave, football pitch for a garden, and ridiculous views 😍👏
Awesome house tour, sir! Thanks for making me more jealous 😅
This video reminds me of the olden days. But I love the videos MD!
Love the uploads!
Idk that i will miss Maidenhead Taunton badly. Love to see Martin again!
Excited for the build!
That garden is awesome. Great house!
Thank you for being who you are.
You are living the life man
That would honestly be perfect for our screened porch/winter garden, whatever it's called area. The humidity is way too low and who doesn't need extra space for fish and plants :D
Wow your new house is amazing, well done the hard work pays off 🙂
This is not the same house where i first saw you show your little shad/ start of your Yt adventure . Well done MD
Love the patio pond!! I'm so sorry your kids are enjoying the pond and the fish. Of course, the fish will be named! I name my fish. 😊(Gina)
Lovely house and back yard.
You made it bro! Historic levels, love this for you bro
Great product I might buy that for my gfs house she will love it
Hello from NZ!
I've never seen your house before and it felt weird being in a more personal area haha I don't know why but yeah.
I once grew a Chwan Basu (Sacred Lotus) in a container that size on a similar deck in the middle of NYC.
if that triangle in your garden was a pond that would be amazing
Yeah I think it would be a great space. Seating area, BBQ pit. Awesome little refuge.
Loving the pond!! I'll do it one day so it's great to see it
I have the same pond but with the fountain filter. Water lettuce apparently hates the cascading water so it kept on dying on me. Also loads of thread algae even though it's in the shade half of the day and it's full of plants and only three goldfish (I'm in NL so roughly same climate as you)
Also a tip I had to learn the hard way, figure out what you will do with the fish in winter. Spoiler, they didn't hibernate like I was told so had to move the next fish into the house the next winter.
Cheers from France.
Thanks for the inspiration ❤❤❤
You need a pond in that garden. You’ve opened a whole new can of worms now 😂. Great vid as always.
might have to get one of these for my balcony
I was going to suggest a light for underneath the "waterfall"... Glad I waited to finish the video first. 😁
Beautiful English scenery!
nice garden mate, i reckon that is crying out for two ponds - a nice nature pond at the back and a recreation/swim pond nearer the house, if you've spoken to Tanner then I'm sure you are aware of aquascape ponds 👍
Looking forward to the pond build
Beautiful backyard
Is this a permanent home for the fish or have I missed you saying it’s temporary as I would’ve refused sale for three goldfish lol
Nice house great video love the pond👍👍
Good seeing you doing something bit different from your amazing tanks great video 🎉
A big natural pond would be amazing. With some perch and roach in it
Awesome work Sir!
So far so good. Any fish going in. Yeah Martin. I'd get small goldfish.
