    I'm so sorry. I used to be a vet assistant in an exotics clinic and I know how this feels. Especially after so much care on your end, and a successful (and difficult) surgery to end sadly on the vet end. Sad and frustrating - thank you so much for all your rescue work. I absolutely love you guys.

      Hey there, as somebody looking to become a vet assistant/tech, what is your opinion of the trade?

    • @houndgirl7365
      @houndgirl7365 2 роки тому +32

      @@RizzlerLegacy Not the main commenter, but fellow tech who went to college for it but retired at 25 from a TBI. It can be rewarding but hard. The truth is the field has high turnover and some clinics can be incredibly dodgy as far as practices go. They can also keep the bare minimum of people with loads of appointments leading to burnout at an extremely high rate. I u fortunately got injured while trying to get a patients vitals and yes 3 other techs were restraining this animal. KNOW YOUR CLINIC! If injury is common place and the techs aren't being taken care of don't risk it its not worth ruining your life.
      That said the field can be amazing when in a good environment just know it's not always puppies and kittens. There is heart break, happiness, death, and sadness that surrounds you on a daily basis. This is the truth of it all and the pay is well let's just say no tech does it for the money. Be careful and I wish you well on your journey if it is something you do pursue.

      @@RizzlerLegacy I echo the other commenter. The practice makes a huge difference. I ended up starting a pet sitting service for medically fragile pets. Made a lot of friends, not a ton of money but that's not what work is about IMO. When I cross the bridge, I'm hoping for a pack to greet me!

      @cherbearian 2 роки тому +11

      @@houndgirl7365 This is spot on. I'm sorry about the reason for your retirement, that's rough. I originally intended to pursue veterinary medicine, but the second vet I worked for pulled me aside one day and pleaded with me to switch to a different field. The practice is rewarding and wonderful, but it also takes a lot out of you. If you tend to give too much of yourself (guilty) then it can really quickly grind you down. That and making sure you're in the right clinic, where your health and safety is just as much a priority - not just physically but mentally and emotionally.
      I eventually went into medical laboratory science and I love it; still have some risk of compassion fatigue and still miss veterinary assistant work but this is a much better field for me. Currently pursuing a Master's in Public Health and intend to go into a new laboratory-based type of med school program.

    Thank you so much for posting this. Not only does it mean people going through the same are not as alone, but it's rare to see such a mature take. I often see pet owners online lambasting vets when they get a bad result in spite of the fact they did everything they could. It's great to see this response articulated to a wider audience.

      Honestly I can't fault the veterinarians. Considering they do the best they can for the animals in their care. For example my family had at least 2 of our dogs and 1 of our cats that had to go to the vet. And while we had to put the cat down due to major smoke inhalation because of a house fire. The 2 dogs came out of there visit to the vet relatively whole and healthy. Considering the male dog lost his one eye; and the female lost half of a leg, and a full litter of puppies. Though when it comes to the litter of puppies it was a one or the other situation considering she may have only had 3 litters in her lifetime but each litter was comprised of 13 puppies each. Though she did end up living to the rip old age of 18.

    It's a good lesson, even for pet owners. In July I lost one of my hognoses - he broke his jaw 🤯 We did multiple weeks of medications and he was doing well... Until he crashed very suddenly. One weekend, on Saturday I thought he was a little slow. On Sunday his attitude was depressed (the plan was to take him to the vet on Monday). On Monday, I found he had died. It was heartbreaking. My vet offered to do a necropsy, which I opted to decline simply because the results wouldn't change what happened, we did everything right, and I needed to let him go. This can happen to our pets - things out of our control. 😔

    I really sympathize with you in losing the water dragon after spending so much time working with her and likely really hoping to rehome her upon her recovery.
    We had a foster kitten that passed away recently after caring for her a little over a month. She was nearly dead when we got her, and then she had made a miraculous recovery and seemed fine until she suddenly crashed again and we lost her. It still devastates me. You spend so much time with them and your hope gets so high, it hurts a lot to lose them. Thank you for all you do and dealing with the pain of loss to keep investing time, money and resources into these animals in the hopes of giving them a better life. Sometimes at the end of the day, all we can do is our best, and no matter what, we have to remember that it was worth it. They got to live in a good place with good care and knew all the love we could give them in the time we had with them. That itself is worth something, it has to be.

    Fun fact: In addition to cows which is what it was originally intended for, Terramycin can also be used on domestic cats and kittens, plus aquatic turtles that have conjuctivitis. Learned this from a woman who rescued cats for a living, and would use it on kittens, since conjunctivitis is very common among feral cats. My old boy, Spike, had lots of eye problems when he was a kitten that continued into adulthood, and when I learned about Terramycin I used it on him to clear up his eyes. He's never had eye problems since.

    Im so sorry Ivanka didnt make it, but thank you for showing it in the vid, it is the reality of a rescue or pets, in general, and I know in the time she was with you she was well taken care of.

    I'm so sorry you lost her, guys. We know you and your Doc/crew tried your best. It's going to happen from time to time, even giving it your all. I'm glad you showed it. Kids need to know why you have to follow care guides to the T, why you need a good vet, and what can happen in real life, including losing them. Thanks for the honest vid.

    It is amazing how well these animals handle things like amputations or losing an eye. At the end of the day, their overall quality of life and managing their pain is most important. I'm sorry about Eyevanka, but she knew love and care for several months and that is what counts

    I am kind of hoping that this video might help other reptiles/animals because their owners realize the possible complications of “just” eye infections 😔

    One of my sugar gliders recently needed his eye removed, we almost lost him in the surgery too : ( I'm so incredibly thankful for all the doctors who helped save him
    That's the thing with these tiny little exotic animals, it's so hard to have everything go well even when everyone does everything they can cuz they're just so small and fragile 💔
    RIP Eyevanka, and thank you guys so much for everything you do for all your animals and showing us all the ups and downs, thanks to the doctor too for doing what he could

    I work at an animal shelter and sadly even doing all that we can this happens. Especially this time of year. It looks like they're doing fine and the next day they're just gone... It really takes it's toll. Three of the kittens I take care of... took care of died suddenly last week. We do a lot of good there are just some things that are out of ourr hands.

    That’s good to know! My leopard gecko had an eye issue as you described. We don’t have very good exotic vets near me so they just cleaned it out and sent me home. It resolved on its own as I gave extra vitamins and calcium during that time. Now I’m realizing how lucky we got!

    Oh Eleanor😃You made it! I’m so glad to see her great recovery! Also I was shocked that some people didn't give proper treatment to their pets even if they had broken bones.. about Ivanka, I've heard that some reptiles die suddenly when they feel that they can no longer reproduce, Ivanka may have been such a case.. Rest In Peace Ivanka🌈
    And Speedo! He’s absolutely beautiful! He maybe has a dwarf-syndrome or something? Anyway if his organs are functioning well, it doesn’t matter! I do hope they will have new great forever homes!🤞🏻🍀

    • @ThePhoenixUnderwater
      @ThePhoenixUnderwater 2 роки тому +1

      I've heard that too... It appears to me that it may have had something to do with the fact that she wasn't previously treated for the issues she had, and may have been sicker than Emily and Ed knew. We will probably never know.

    • @reiherptilelover
      @reiherptilelover 2 роки тому

      @@ThePhoenixUnderwater yes.. we’ll never know.. Actually one of my friends had a beautiful female day gecko who has no right forearm because she attacked by something. But since that not affects to reproduce, so she survived and laid eggs many times and became a great mama, and enjoyed her entire life. I think these are everything just a part of nature, or a part of ecosystem.
