My mom was super freaked out at the idea I was getting a lizard, 14 at the time. I brought home my new little bearded dragon, and I was stoked. He was just starting to shed when I got him, so day 3 I gave him a bath. Forgot to grab a towel so I begged my mom to just keep an eye on him and after much coaxing she agreed. I was gone less than a minute and I cane back to her holding him and going on and on about how cute he is. I was stunned.
Glad someone said something about the "room temperature" thing. I see so many reptile guides that say "this will do great at room temp" and I'm like, ok, what temp is your room my guy. I keep my rooms around 18C because that's what my body is used to, will that be ok for this tropical creature? Oh it's not? You just live in a warm part of the world and couldn't imagine that other people don't live in your house? Write better guides is what I'm saying
Yea my preferred room temp is 72° (22° C) but my current bedroom has a massive window and poor ventillation so it's constantly hitting 77°/25°+ all the time during the winter just because this big window faces the way the sun rises so it blasts in heat all day, even with the curtains closed
My mom wouldn't let me get a snake when I was a kid cuz she has a crippling fear of rodents. Now I'm an adult and stuck living with my mom again and she let me get a ball python 🥰 she thinks he's cute and she even helped me feed him one time. My mom has come a long way lol
I think it's always different when the child becomes an adult. Her fear probably stemmed from the fact that if you didn't do your pet duties right, then she would have to step up to do it and she couldn't bring herself to. Now that you're an adult she trusts you to look after it and even if she helps now, it's probably because she's learnt from you and is confident because of that. Happy you got your snake!
“Not long lived, 5-7 years” *laughs in plenty of 20+ year old geckos* Also, since I’ve been breeding them for several years, own a lot, and have produced a lot, I’ll chime in on the breeding side of it; There’s not “normal” morph crested geckos. The lower end geckos you’d see would likely be brindles, flames, or patternless, and while those could be cheap animals themselves, there’s also higher quality brindles, flames, and patternless geckos that go for several hundred as long as they have good structure and lineage. The main issue is people who don’t know what they’re doing pairing random stuff with no lineage together and producing more poorly structured, muddy colored, blurry patterned geckos and then not being able to sell them because the low quality market is flooded. The chance of getting a low quality animal coming from a high quality pairing is incredibly low. The chance of getting an extremely cheap pet store quality gecko coming out of a high end pairing would be nearly impossible. Even the lowest quality animal produced by a high end pairing would hold value due to the lineage behind it.
I’ve only had gecko’s for about 7 months or so and I was wondering what a more normal life span is for these awesome creatures? Sorry if it’s a stupid question lol I’ll blame it on being a newbie 🤣
@@Kelbel8119 they can definitely make it 15-20+ years if cared for properly. They were only rediscovered in the mid-90’s so the ones we have in the country came over in the late 90’s. In the grand scheme of things, they are very new to captivity. Back then, we didn’t know much about them or their diet. Now, with a balanced commercial diet available and a better understanding on how to care for them, I definitely think we’ll see many of these guys living 20+ years 😁 congrats on your new pet!
@@MaddieSmith that sounds way better than 5-7 years! That is definitely exciting to hear! The worst part of having pets is losing them so I’m glad they’ll be around for a long time! Thank you!!
I was wondering about that!! I got a baby last summer and forgot how old they live. The other day I googled it for a curious family member and saw like 20 years. Again I'm new to cresties but hearing that guy say 5-7 years set off some alarms LOL
"Sometimes they see their babies and they're like 'oo, i spot a little snack there.' So you gotta beat them to it" sounds like you're trying to beat them to be the first to eat their children, Alex :(
Yeah. Like pet rabbits live 8+ years but in the wild they only live 2 bc of bad conditions. Just an example of how conditions effect life span. So if Jungle Bob's reptiles are living such short lives then he really shouldn't have them...
Probably because he talked about the male & female living together. That permanent breeding would stress them badly & could also lead to the mother dying from malnutrition from constantly producing eggs ... So if he constantly keeps his pairs together I could imagine them dying sooner... But I was confused to hear 5-7 years too!
I really want a crested gecko BECAUSE of their long lifespan. I become attached to my animals and would prefer they lived longer, although I'm not entirely against pets with a short lifespan. I'm getting a hamster in the next few weeks and i have had rats in the past. But i would prefer animals with a longer lifespan.
Crested Geckos can live up to 15-20 years in captivity, they're also technically not completely nocturnal. They're actually crepuscular, but this does depend on the individual. Great video by the way!
my mom absolutely loves my crested gecko and i’m so glad she does because she’s so willing to help me with his care and get the perfect environment and to give him the best life, that’s something i’m very thankful for lol,
If you need to cool an enclosure a little in the AZ summer (it gets like 110+ here) you can put a damp towel over part of the mesh lid and add a few ice cubes on top. They'll slowly melt and you'll get an evaporative cooling effect 😎
If you want a fancy solution that also helps with humidity, you can use an evaporative cooler - it cools a room and also adds humidity. I've seen really small ones that could be placed on a desk or platform near the enclosure
Never thought I'd see the day Jungle Bob appear on GoHerping...quite a small world considering I live on Long Island and been to his Reptile World many times His most famous lizard is Castro (quite a fitting name) the Cuban Rock Iguana. Castro changed the way I viewed iguanas. Because of green iguanas I thought all iguanas were feisty and aggressive but rock iguanas are as chill as the people of the islands they call home. Just from their vibe you can tell they're from the Caribbean
Room temperaturen does not mean the temperature of a random room. It's the average temperature of households. The average is 68-72 F or 20-22 C. It annoys me how often this is missunderstood.
Sure but the point still stands, when people hear "room temperature" they think the current temperature of whatever room they're keeping their reptile in is fine and doesn't have to be adjusted when that's often not the case
My sister recently got a crested gecko and her work around for when we get a really hot day is she takes an ice pack and wraps it in a dish towel, she then leaves it in the enclosure in the corner and it cools down the temperature inside by a good amount and maintains a good temperature throughout the day. On a really hot day she may have to replace the ice pack once or twice. Hope this may help others!!!
Alternatively, you could take a frozen bottle of water (or any other frozen object) and place it in front of a fan facing the enclosure. I’ve never personally done it so I can’t attest to it actually working as intended or being at all practical. 🤷🏻♀️
Going to mention about getting a female and male and cohabitating: If you choose to breed them, you are essentially backyard breeding unless they are both from reputable breeders with transparent, pure bloodlines and a good quality of gecko. Petsmart, petco, etc are the worst of the worst, and have terrible genetics.
Not to mention females retain. There is no reason to keep male and female crested geckos together year round, it stresses the female, females will continue laying fertile eggs for around a year (sometimes longer) off 1 pairing.
I gotta speak up in defense of mom’s cuz I am one. I started with 2 crested gecko’s then I went and got my daughter a crestie and my son a beardie. I don’t have an issue with the smaller crickets, but the large one’s freak me out. I still am the only one that feeds the crickets so there are mom’s out there that will put their fears aside for their kids happiness! Just found your channel and I love it!
"you shouldnt breed and then be like, all right, time to find people because you very likely might have to end up just giving it away for free on craigslist to some random, sketchy person, who just might be me." goherping. lmao
Dude, this made me laugh to know there's moms out there scared of their children's reptiles. I mean, I knew that certain ppl don't like reptiles, or are scared of them, but thinking about moms confessing to you that they hate the crested gecko's creepy little face, and they can't sleep at night, that is just too funny.
I haven't be allowed a snake because my parents hate snakes. Lizards are fine. I'm like "the only difference is one has legs, one doesn't" - people weird like that
My mom won't let me get a snake, because she's scared of it escaping and slithering on her when she is asleep. My mom's okay with most lizards, she thinks alot of them are cute.
My mother used to be like that lol. I have 4 reptiles now but she’s most concerned about my snake. She does know how much he means to me and has learned to tolerate him at least, lol.
I thought “room temp” was specifically 68-72. Am I an idiot? Where did I think that? Edit: I found it. Studies show the most comfortable temperature for most humans is 68-72f. I’m not an idiot. Ambient temperature is what you actually keep the room at. Room temperature is specifically 68-72. Boom found it.
@@quetzai6757 This was a joke, I did watch both videos. The joke is that the titles look "interesting" when together, not that GoHerping is a terrible gecko owner
Since you didn't know it off the top of your head from what I recall from looking it up before crested geckos can live 20+ years. So yeah they're less like guinea pigs more like ya know... an indoor cat in terms of what to expect for time invested into their care. If you get a crestie when you just graduated high school you could be middle age before it dies of natural causes.
Yea to the reaction vids. You have great opinions and I usually learn something. Also, cresties live 15-20 years. I’ve already told my daughter that she will be taking hers to college with her!!
I really love reptiles and so I drag my poor mom to alot of reptile stores. She is perpetually terrified, once asked me if a ball python could eat a human baby. But the funiest thing shes done was when I was holding a baby crested gecko, it jumped from one of my hands to the other in the directoin towards my mom, in response to this my mother jumped back and screamed. She literally screamed because a baby crested jumped in her directoin while still 3 feet away from her.
They live around 15 to 20 years. I agree they shouldn’t be aimed directly for children on their own to look after. I have white tree frogs and I didn’t get them till I was older for that reason. You need to be prepared and willing to take care of an animal and as a child sometimes it’s hard to do that by yourself.
For the temp. My apt stays really cold (around 50s) but I put a heater in the back and her lil hide out right on the heater part ♥️ she stays there a lot. For the hotter days I do turn on the ac, spray with cold water
I used to be very confused by "room temperature" reptile care guides. What happens at night? Maybe it's ok for it to get a bit cooler at night, but surely there's a limit. Were these guides only intended for people living in warmer areas and why didn't they say so? And even if it could get cold at night, what happens when you're out all day? It would be absurd to suggest it's cheaper and easier to care for this reptile because you can HEAT YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE even when you're not in it instead of just heating the enclosure. And then I found out that North Americans usually have a different type of heating system and it's normal to have it on 24/7. Mind = blown.
Wow, here room temperature can be 24°C to 15°C, but in the summer it can be even 35°C and I am sure that's not okey for any reptile, especially if they need a consistent warmth
@@lapis8183 That’s not room temperature that’s a room’s temperature Room temperature is a scientific term for 21°C (69.8°F) Room temperature isn’t a great way to describe a temperature an animal is kept in, instead you will need to find out what the min/max day temperature and the min/max night temperature is That’s why desert dwelling species are often ideal they wont go into torper or brumation when the temperature goes below 16°C (like most tropical species) and they’ll only need extra heating in daytime.
Keeping a central heater (one that uses gas and modulates) on 24/7 will actually save money on gas and will cause less damage to the burner (saves in maintenance). The best way to heat your house is to keep your thermostat on the same temperature all the time, and if you want to let your house cool down at night, if you’re away or want to heat it up when you’re cold you never set it higher or lower than 2°C above or below the set temperature. This only works for modulating central heaters that use gas other heaters can have other ideal settings.
@@carrieseymour5197 I got this from my neighbor and he has worked with modulating gas heaters for the last 20 years or so. Regular non modulating on/off central gas heaters will maintenance wise benefit from being turned on as little as possible so keeping your house at the same temperature might damage the burner a bit more but you will still have a little benefit in gas usage because keeping a room at the same temperature uses less energy than heating a room up. Most modern heat pump systems don’t even have the capacity to heat a room back up to the normal temperature.
SOOOOO we're not gonna talk about the lil man YEETING himself after getting poked in the butt? 12:17 I absolutely died-- is this crestie still among the living after that jump??? I'm screaming
I keep my apartment blasting at 60 but in my reptile area i have pcs and servers that blast out heat forwards the none heat lamp side. Makes a very nice temperature environment plus supplemental heating on a thermostat. All hooked up to a UPS so no fear of losing power
just random thing,(relating to moms not liking geckos/snakes) but my mom didn't like the thought of owning a Gecko in the house, (leopard gecko) which I ended up getting. but I made her name him, and she grew to love him when I brought him home.(when I got him) I've had this gecko since I was 15, I am now in college and because my dorms don't allow pets my family takes care of him while I am away. but It is so cool to see my family grow to love him just as much as I do. every time I visit them they tell me about how they take care, and how happy he is. my lil guy is 4 years old now and hopefully I am able to take care of him once again next year in an apartment.
not everyone knows that unfortunately, i have seen people keep their cresteds in non defined temps (extreme sometimes like 55F) because they arent aware of the term.
@Phantom StarsX I was honestly confused that he didn't know it, then I saw so many talk about it in the comments. Lol. I am horribly hot all the time! It could be -15° and I'm sure I would be sweating. I guess I knew it because I have used it as a defense to turn the heat off at my mom's house (she is always cold) lol... I never turn heat on in the winter resulting in my home starting at a perfect 60ish all winter, but I go to my moms and I can't breath, her heart will be 80. Lol... anyways I guess I learned that not it's not common knowledge that room temperature is aviary defined. Lol and maybe I learned I'm a bit of a Karen when it comes to getting to hot. 😆 🤣 😂
@@staceydailey6394 oh I totally get it I hate anything over 71 inside. But yeah unfortunately with reptiles in general I've just stopped relying on "common sense/knowledge" with reptiles, I tend to just specify everything I can cause yeah... I've seen some shocking stuff. I was also surprised when I realized people didnt know what "room temperature" referred to and literally just thought it meant any ambient temps, no heat lamps ever.
Yknow, sometimes I’m surprised about my mom compared to others. She was deathly afraid of reptiles but allowed me to get a beardie. She fell in love with him, let me get a leopard gecko. Snakes were a HUGE hurdle for her, but she let me get a ball python and after a few months she’d come and look at him. Ask me to bring him out, and eventually she held him, and now she gets upset when people needlessly kill snakes and preach educating yourself on local wildlife and relocating. She’s made big steps to understand my pets. Big proud of her.
12x12x18 is for babies, good lord. Also why is he bashing women as the barriers to their poor husbands and children? You'd be surprised how many men are horrified about bugs 🙄 He could have said anyone who is squeamish with bugs.
My Dad was/is scared of snakes. I had to wait till I was over 20 before I could sneak my first ball python into the house. He's less scared of them now, more just weirded out by them.
“ Silly hat Bob “ Put the gecko down and walk away from the crested gecko , I repeat “ walk away from the crested gecko & shush your mouth . Thank you 😁 🦎 😎 Jokes aside well done goherping for pointing out this mans silly chatter .
The mom thing is so true. I had a small garter snake years ago and it went horribly. My dad and I went camping and we got a call from my mom and she was panicking. She had tried to feed the snake and it got out of his tank and somehow got into the kitchen. Instead of acting normal my mom and my sister both lost it. My sister was sitting on the counter screaming as my mom put on oven mitts and used a spatula to put him back in his tank. After that we did have the snake for much longer. Years down the road I wanted to get a crested gecko. My step mom said no because she was afraid of reptiles. Long story short I’ve had my crestie for almost two years. Everyone else in my house knows about him except my step mom. Lol guess it’s a mom thing 😂🤷🏼♀️
no, but I've been able to get better deals with brands by first acquiring a bunch of customers for free (through affiliate programs) and using that as leverage to show I'm a valuable partner. Worst case scenario, I still get the commissions even if they say no :D I'll be trying to include a brand in most videos though.
My mom thought reptiles were weird till I got them, and now she literally loves my crested gecko and leopard gecko. And my little Pac-Man. And she encourages to me to get more.
It’s so odd to me that they mention the moms being the impediment to getting reptiles. I’m a mom and if I had my way I’d have at least a dozen reptiles (and probably several rodents and some fish tanks). It’s my husband that’s dead set against it. In short: he’s always the practical one. He’ll list a myriad of reasons why not to get this or that animal, whereas I’m just like “but it’s cute and I want it! That’s good enough!” Lol
My mom is a traditional WASP boomer. She bought outfits for my bearded dragon and set up an outdoor play area for him. I think moms are more against getting ANY pet for their kid because they know the responsibilities usually fall on them after the kid gets bored, dads will mess up on purpose to get out of doing a chore in the future. It's just better to get a pet the whole family can bond with if you're going to end up having to care for it anyway.
Ive had my crested gecko for about 6 years and i have him in a 24x18 enclosure but he seems to prefer the ground. I made him a little bed out of papertowels and he loves it.
Cresteds are 15-20 years especially if not constantly breeding. Balls can be 40-60. Oldest male was 46 in the 90s (and we've learned so much about thrm since then) Oldest female is still alive at 64-she made the news in 2020 when she laid eggs at 63. I have a bp turning 30 this year-got her as an inexperienced 15 year old that was given all kinds of outdated info and gear from the 90s and no Google. So 30 years is easily achievable for BPs.
My mom thinks that a crested gecko is adorable, and she is considering getting me one. We went to a reptile shop, and I got to hold one, and we completely fell in love with it. Do have any advice for enclousers, food, or even where to buy one?
I bought a little fan that wraps around the pole of my reptile shelving from Amazon, and usually keep it on a low setting for my crestie if it’s too hot
Hey I'm a mother and my both my husband and teenage son could care less about my reptiles lol in fact they both say it's a waste of money then I remind them it's MY money, I have a crested gecko 2 Leo's a kenyan sand boa and a ball python.
I'm sorry this man wants you to keep a whole ass family of them in a juvie enclosure? Also I use heat mats with cresties. I tape them on the back at the bottom and use a thermostat. They aren't usually on, but they kick on sometimes at night if it gets below 65F. Once when my AC was out on a Las Vegas summer day I had to pop a frozen water bottle in the enclosure. Not my favorite animal, but a lot end up needing foster homes so here we are lol.
I always considered room temp 70 - 75 summer, 68 - 70 winter. Also, I went to a reptile expo (eugh) looking for an O. Cataphractus and people were charging over $100 for a crested...
my mom wasn’t to happy with me wanting a crested gecko (she thought they were creepy bc of the eyes) but i convinced her to let me get one. now that i got one, she loves her and thinks she’s cute 😂
its funny you said that about waterfalls as my crestie has a fountain that is water runnyng down leaves and he spends monst of his time sitting on the branch beside it with is tail on the leaf in the water. no idea why he likes his tail to be wet as he could easily have it resting on the branch. he has this weird thing where he jumps at my mum when she walks past, never does this with anyone else that has ever gone past his tank, and yesterday i had to wipe poop that had been smeared all over the top leaf as he must have jumped not long after pooping and his tail smeared it
I am a mom with 3 and 5 year old daughters. We have 8 snakes, 2 crested geckos, 3 whites tree frogs, garden snails, 10 isopod colonies, a dead leaf mantis, Dubai roach colonies, a betta, pet rats, dogs, an African grey and a chinchilla. The men in my family are terrified of snakes and creeped out by bugs. I don’t think it’s a “mom” issue. It’s dependent on the person and the responsibility involved. That said, I disagree with Jungle Bob and truly believe that any critter you bring into your family must be thoroughly researched and correctly provided for. It must be an adult’s responsibility which they can use as a teaching and learning experience for their children who can contribute to the care of the animal.
I live in Arizona, I only have leopard geckos and they’re quite a warm species so it’s not much of a worry for me In Summertime with ac (we keep the house at 76°) but last summer we had the power out for almost two days because of bad storm, the house go to warm it was like 85° inside which is pretty rough and I put ice cubes in my geckos substrate on his cool side so the substrate could at least be fairly cool by the time he woke up that night (also I have a bioactive so the moisture is good for my springtails and isopods)
I am a proud rehome for a leopard gecko. The previous owners bought her the Leo for their child. The kids did nothing but the mom took care of the leo very nicely yet got bad information from a store. Not the worst but not the greatest. The leopard gecko is very healthy and I changed all her tank set up. My point is. It's sad when people buy kids a very difficult pet for a young child for Christmas 3 years ago. They couldn't take care of her anymore so I stepped in with lots of research and now Sally the Leo is super happy and healthy. Never buy a reptile for a child that never knew what they are doing with it. Not a good guide for a crestie. :(
I hope I get that lucky. My oldest is 5. Though I had a love bird that was said to live up to 20 years and she got a tumor at age 2. So sometimes things happen.
Was thinking of getting a crested/gargoyle, I’ve got an old 29 gal and would converting it vertical be an alright size? It would be 12x18x30. Also do you own any fish?
Yo I've got my crestie in an exoterra that's like 30gal cube. I also have a 29 gal fish tank like yours. The dimensions would be very best and the thought crossed my mind but I never bothered figured it out
Could you do a video showing how you edit and cut parts out of your videos and put like pictures and separate parts in? I can't figure out how to do it lol.
i actually keep my crested gecko with my whites tree frog, they’re close in size so they never try to eat each other. sometimes they have “standoffs” where they get face to face and stare each other down, but these always end with one of them walking away without violence. i should mention that this is a 180 gallon enclosure, i guarantee they would have killed each other or had negative affects from stress if i put them in a 40 gallon or something. i am going to move them into seperate enclosures soon because i would rather use my 180 gallon for a large group of smaller frogs and lizards, maybe anoles, dart frogs, and some smaller tree frog. also ik they have somewhat different temp/humidity requirements, but the tank is large enough to have multiple areas with the perfect conditions for each animal
Haha cute video. However, I’m a mom, and I’m the one who loves reptiles, and will catch them me outside and also have some pet reptiles. I actually love just about all animals. I also raise my own dubia roaches and mealworms. I’m the only one who will even touch the roaches. You’re so enjoyable to watch!!
If you have house geckos in your country its just unimaginable that you'd ever be afraid of being close to one. I have like two circling my ceiling every night and I never have to pay them any mind. My whole life I've lived with them and never once has one tried to jump/crawl on me.
I gifted my niece a betta fish and she did not take care of it so I took it back after a bit. Her mom/ my sister did not touch luci at all and did not push my niece to take care of luci.. so, I took luci back and he’s the first betta that has lived past 5 yrs ♥️ he’s slowing down with his swimming, he’s an old man now. But I’m glad they didn’t give him away to another kid that would have prob not done him any good .. he’s a nice betta fish 🐟 ♥️ my lil luci ♥️🙆🏻♀️
What? I've lived in Arizona for 35 years and never heard anyone say "we don't use our AC". Maybe, we keep it at 82-85 in the summer because we broke and can only afford to cook down the house down 30 degrees. But in Arizona it is illegal for the utilities or landlord to turn it off most of the year because it's life or death. We actually have cooling stations (AC oasis) for the unhoused.
I have a hamster, snail, and rabbit that are my personal pets and solely my responsibility. The rule in my house is if my parents see my pets getting neglected, they'll make me rehome them. That way my pets are cared for and my parents don't have to do anything. Win-win situation (btw I absolutely LOVE taking proper care of my pets so it's not an issue to begin with lol).
I love my crested gecko and am willing to try to get him insects, but his previous owner couldn't get him to eat them. I can't get him to eat fruit. I am convinced he doesn't know how to eat solid food. He just kinda licks the solid food and gives up. (He does eat his pangea gecko diet).
Idk if it works with cresties, but for leos you can sort of cut off the head of a waxworm and make them lick the insides and it might trigger the gecko to eat it? Or if you're really dedicated of wanting him to eat insects, you could mix them up in a blender or mash up with other tools after gutloading them (and freeze the rest in icecube forms to thaw up). For liquid, you could iust go with water or even mix with the pangea. Or you could serve the pangea drop by drop on a chopstick when he is really hungry and move the stick around just a bit and then more and more, it might trigger his underlying hunting after a few weeks rather than just feeding from a dish? Just some ideas to try out!
mr herp, you may consider toning down the slight zoom-in. the zoom-ins from the 10 minute point on were getting too distracting for me. then again i may be too sleepy right now.
Not about reptiles but similar to the point about breeding for babies: My family got a hamster. We had them before and my parents thought that I was getting lonely (pre-Covid, ouch) so we got a small, female, Dwarf Hamster. Literally the next day, less than 12 hours after getting her, she has 8 babies and we freak out because we wanted hamster singular, not hamsters plural. Luckily we did our absolute best to do everything correctly and all the babies and the mother survived and found nice homes
I hid a snake for about a year. But I didn’t have a license so I walked three miles every week to get its food because I couldn’t keep them in the freezer
My parents were iffy about reptiles at first but after i showed them how cool they with vids and stuff. They grew to like them. For example my mom and dad are still not fans of snakes but they don't mind if I own one. I've also showed them spiders, scorpians and many other critters. The only animal i can't have is a crab cause my mom has a phobia lol

“Not long lived, 5-7 years”
*laughs in plenty of 20+ year old geckos*
Also, since I’ve been breeding them for several years, own a lot, and have produced a lot, I’ll chime in on the breeding side of it;
There’s not “normal” morph crested geckos.
My moms gecko just passed over christmas. he was friggin 17 or older. Rip Mr Gecky
"Sometimes they see their babies and they're like 'oo, i spot a little snack there.' So you gotta beat them to it"
sounds like you're trying to beat them to be the first to eat their children, Alex :(
I'm still learning English. Eating the babies was the only translation I know for that phrase

Crested geckos can live 15-20 years. If the gecko is only living 5-7 years then you are definitely doing something wrong.
Not gonna lie, I cracked up laughing when the crested gecko FLEW off of Bob's hand like he was being abducted by his people.
I use a frozen water bottle wrapped in paper towels. I’ve only had to do that once when our AC broke in August.
If you want a fancy solution that also helps with humidity, you can use an evaporative cooler - it cools a room and also adds humidity. I've seen really small ones that could be placed on a desk or platform near the enclosure
thanks for that idea! I live in Arizona and it's gonna be summer soon and the AC really does struggle to keep up
I live in fl and my AC sucks sometimes so I do this same thing
Thank u so much for this!
Never thought I'd see the day Jungle Bob appear on GoHerping...quite a small world considering I live on Long Island and been to his Reptile World many times
His most famous lizard is Castro (quite a fitting name) the Cuban Rock Iguana. Castro changed the way I viewed iguanas. Because of green iguanas I thought all iguanas were feisty and aggressive but rock iguanas are as chill as the people of the islands they call home. Just from their vibe you can tell they're from the Caribbean
I also live on Long Island and have been there many times! I love Castro!
Long Island hype. Also Cuban hype.
@@simonerenee7163 is it a big store?
Small world. Same!
I grew up there and went to the store a few times! I didn't think I'd ever hear about it outside of my time there
Room temperaturen does not mean the temperature of a random room. It's the average temperature of households. The average is 68-72 F or 20-22 C.
It annoys me how often this is missunderstood.
Its still probably a horrible idea to tell new owners to keep something at room temperature considering how few people know that
Sure but the point still stands, when people hear "room temperature" they think the current temperature of whatever room they're keeping their reptile in is fine and doesn't have to be adjusted when that's often not the case
Yes ofc i agree one shouldn't tell new owners too keep them at room temperature. But rather specify what temp.
my room temperature is 28-35 C
reaction vids are becoming my favorite series here
My sister recently got a crested gecko and her work around for when we get a really hot day is she takes an ice pack and wraps it in a dish towel, she then leaves it in the enclosure in the corner and it cools down the temperature inside by a good amount and maintains a good temperature throughout the day. On a really hot day she may have to replace the ice pack once or twice.
Hope this may help others!!!
That is actually a really good idea. I'll be sure to keep this in mind!
There is no reason to keep male and female crested geckos together year round, it stresses the female, females will continue laying fertile eggs for around a year (sometimes longer) off 1 pairing.
bruh every supplier buys from the same wholesaler.

She does know how much he means to me and has learned to tolerate him at least, lol.
my mom always insults my crested gecko
I showed my mom a picture of a really cute baby crestie once and she literally went "eww" 😂😂 luckily for me i'm an adult
my mom wasnt super fond of me getting a crestie, i finally convinced her to let me get one and she absolutely LOVES him now
Mr herping I am begging you to release your uncensored tax rant please it would bring me great joy
Alex I know you see this.
My house is kept 73-75F all year. SO A/C in summer, heat in Winter(I am in Canada). My geckos seem to do just fine w/this.

It was literally someone he hired. He even pointed out what they did wrong.
Goherping - I don't feel worse for a crested gecko being fed.
Crested gecko - and I took that personally
My mom actually convinced me to get a crested gecko and we both love him
Unboxing needed, love those and updates on creatures.
@@lapis8183
That’s not room temperature that’s a room’s temperature
Room temperature is a scientific term for 21°C (69.8°F)
Room temperature isn’t a great way to describe a temperature an animal is kept in, instead you will need to find out what the min/max day temperature and the min/max night temperature is
That’s why desert dwelling species are often ideal they wont go into torper or brumation when the temperature goes below 16°C (like most tropical species) and they’ll only need extra heating in daytime.
@@MightyRude that is contrary to what I have heard, and I have specifically heard that debunked as a myth.
@@carrieseymour5197
I got this from my neighbor and he has worked with modulating gas heaters for the last 20 years or so.
Regular non modulating on/off central gas heaters will maintenance wise benefit from being turned on as little as possible so keeping your house at the same temperature might damage the burner a bit more but you will still have a little benefit in gas usage because keeping a room at the same temperature uses less energy than heating a room up.
Most modern heat pump systems don’t even have the capacity to heat a room back up to the normal temperature.
getting a crestie this week so perfect timing :)
The lifespan of a crested geckos is around 20+ years lol

I keep my apartment blasting at 60 but in my reptile area i have pcs and servers that blast out heat forwards the none heat lamp side. Makes a very nice temperature environment plus supplemental heating on a thermostat. All hooked up to a UPS so no fear of losing power
just random thing,(relating to moms not liking geckos/snakes)
but my mom didn't like the thought of owning a Gecko in the house, (leopard gecko) which I ended up getting.
but I made her name him, and she grew to love him when I brought him home.(when I got him) I've had this gecko since I was 15, I am now in college and because my dorms don't allow pets my family takes care of him while I am away.
but It is so cool to see my family grow to love him just as much as I do. every time I visit them they tell me about how they take care, and how happy he is.
my lil guy is 4 years old now and hopefully I am able to take care of him once again next year in an apartment.
"Room temperature" literally is defined between 68°-72° F. Anytime you hear someone say to keep it room temperature, it means 68°-72°.
not everyone knows that unfortunately, i have seen people keep their cresteds in non defined temps (extreme sometimes like 55F) because they arent aware of the term.

Tip number one, don’t let any one else care for your animals 👍
That’s good enough!”
Lol
Totally the same way here lol
Yes but you're one specific couple, in general it's more likely for a mother to oppose getting a reptile than a father

Cresteds are 15-20 years especially if not constantly breeding.
Balls can be 40-60. Oldest male was 46 in the 90s (and we've learned so much about thrm since then)
Oldest female is still alive at 64-she made the news in 2020 when she laid eggs at 63.
I have a bp turning 30 this year-got her as an inexperienced 15 year old that was given all kinds of outdated info and gear from the 90s and no Google. So 30 years is easily achievable for BPs.

Why does jungle bob hold the leopard geko like a pizza roll
its funny you said that about waterfalls as my crestie has a fountain that is water runnyng down leaves and he spends monst of his time sitting on the branch beside it with is tail on the leaf in the water. no idea why he likes his tail to be wet as he could easily have it resting on the branch. he has this weird thing where he jumps at my mum when she walks past, never does this with anyone else that has ever gone past his tank, and yesterday i had to wipe poop that had been smeared all over the top leaf as he must have jumped not long after pooping and his tail smeared it
I am a mom with 3 and 5 year old daughters.
Crested gecko life span is 15-20

Cresties have adorable faces!
i actually keep my crested gecko with my whites tree frog, they’re close in size so they never try to eat each other. sometimes they have “standoffs” where they get face to face and stare each other down, but these always end with one of them walking away without violence. i should mention that this is a 180 gallon enclosure, i guarantee they would have killed each other or had negative affects from stress if i put them in a 40 gallon or something. i am going to move them into seperate enclosures soon because i would rather use my 180 gallon for a large group of smaller frogs and lizards, maybe anoles, dart frogs, and some smaller tree frog. also ik they have somewhat different temp/humidity requirements, but the tank is large enough to have multiple areas with the perfect conditions for each animal
Someone else noticing the gecko launching itself through the air at the end when he touched its stump-tail?? 😂

Cresties can live 15-20 years in captivity....with proper care
Cold rock slabs might be a good passive way to cool down the temp in an enclosure.
Yo when are we getting part 2 of the unboxing ????
If you have house geckos in your country its just unimaginable that you'd ever be afraid of being close to one. I have like two circling my ceiling every night and I never have to pay them any mind. My whole life I've lived with them and never once has one tried to jump/crawl on me.

We actually have cooling stations (AC oasis) for the unhoused.

ice packs put in socks or wrapped and towels placed on the cool side helps keep my leopard gecko tank cool during heatwaves
They get very stuck on one food if they don't get a lot of variety as babies and juvies
I've heard of using cpu fans to cool enclosures down before!
mr herp, you may consider toning down the slight zoom-in. the zoom-ins from the 10 minute point on were getting too distracting for me.
then again i may be too sleepy right now.
jungle bob😂 bob from the jungle🍃
Not about reptiles but similar to the point about breeding for babies:
My family got a hamster.
I grew up with an iguana, had to give it away since he got too big. I'm lucky to have a reptile and frog lovin' mom.
I died at the voice over
They can live up to 20 years
I hid a snake for about a year.
