Thank You - Great Update. Just topped 5,000 on my R1T. The best ride I have ever had. Living in El Centro, I will let the officials in Imperial County know about the inept chargers. They have asked me in the past.
We live in San Diego and coincidentally just did Sequoia in October and Tucson, AZ over Thanksgiving. For Sequoia we were pulling our camp trailer with our Model X. We camped in Three Rivers at a campground with 50 amp service, allowing us to recharge nightly like we were at home. Still this proved to be limiting trying to reach the far end of Kings Canyon. I’m looking forward to my max pack R1T not only for the increased range but for that extra exploring range in these remote areas with limited charging. I hope Rivian and others get on the plan to install chargers in or at least near National Parks. The trip back from Tucson right after Thanksgiving was no problem. I thought superchargers would be full but it turns out we never did have to wait. This is one of my wife’s concerns with the pending Rivian. The supercharger network is not only better distributed but more reliable as well. There’s definite anxiety when EV tripping in a non Tesla.
You’re wife said it correctly (charging in CA) it’s not a problem THERE. Rich Rebuilds did a trip over on the east coast in a Rivian and it was a totally different experience. He makes the best points in charging in that the infrastructure is key and most places (out of CA) just don’t have it.
Interesting comments on the R1S vs R1T. I had originally ordered the SUV but I realized that I would not use the third row much at all and the bed had greater utility. A couple of months into ownership and I think that was the right call. I've used the bed a bunch. There is plenty of space in the 'T for 4 people.
Good to know about the Sequoia charging situation. We live in So Cal and I was wondering about driving up to forestry places. These “living with technology” videos are very helpful. Thanks Sullenses!
Still comes down to range and charging access. If Rivian can get a much improved 2.0 out before CT then may take a look. Your review has enabled my impatience for the CT to hold out.
When I got my 2018 Tesla I for some reason had free supercharging at Qualcomm and I lived in apartments without charging so I was always there but it wasn’t THAT bad, depending on when you go. Problems came when there were multiple chargers not working well but Qualcomm is pretty cool so I’m glad I had that experience. Now I live in Tucson and own a home so it’s ten times better quality of life
Nice update! I'm thinking of transitioning from my Model 3 to a different make of EV someday, and your observations about the DCFC network were helpful. Let's hope those 3rd-party providers can ramp up, improve, and accelerate their network. I always appreciate Jennie's perspectives, as they help answer a lot of my wife's questions about the practicality of EVs.
I did go from Model X to a Rivian and I'm very happy. Car is not perfect but at least I can call support and actually get help for my issues. If you ever have issues with Tesla that service center is not equipped to solve aka FSD cameras software etc.. Good luck 🤣
Good to know that the biggest issue with these trucks are the charging networks and not the trucks themselves. Now I just have to wait and see if/when they come to the UK and at what cost 🤞
I got my new R1-T delivered over a month ago and your right mine was delivered without bed cover, but I’m so excited about this truck its amazing and so much fun to drive on air ride suspension I used to drive a 18wheeler and had an air ride in that, and the 0-60 in 3 sec so much fun still over a month people need these!!! 😀
There's another EV channel I follow on UA-cam where the channel host who lives in the Los Angeles area bought a Rivian R1T and tried to road trip with it up to the Bay Area and had a horrible experience like the one you had in El Centro. Every Electrify America DC fast charger that he tried was either out of service or had a ridiculously slow charging speed where it would have taken an entire day to charge. These kinds of experiences really highlight the advantage of owning a Tesla. Tesla's supercharger network is so vast and their equipment is so reliable that you almost never have a charging challenge. Even if you happen to get a charger that's out of service, there are so many others available that it's almost never an issue.
I think if you had an r1s and slept inside it for long hauls and use an rv park you can use a 50 amp plugin to fully charge its most likely a little chaper than a night in a hotel with better charging but its not as spacous
Thanks for the honest review. Having an ev is great except on road trips… Going back to a Ford Raptor and having real world 600 mile road trip range looks so tempting after seeing this.
Great series on the Rivian! Just don't know if I would commit to one vehicle that is electric with a 230 mile actual range. I would have to sell my Santa Cruz and EV6 to get the Rivian. The prices have really come down. Launch editions are mid to high 80's and falling. If it was a Tesla with the super charger network maybe, but I travel to Austin and San Antonio for family and just don't know about the EA network etc. (Ben's face while at the station in El Centro says it all) My EV6 does not leave town. The R1T sure is sweet though!
Like Bjorn says, "ABC", always be charging, my observation is that if one depends on EA, should be "always Be Checking (for other stations)" If you have a portable L2 EVSE, most camping sites provide 1450 outlets. jus sayin.
A super review. I especially enjoy the videos where you include your wife, because her perspective as a foil to yours adds to the information content. Thank you.
Quality content and info about the car. The couples reviews are fantastic. Men and women really interpret cars differently. It's an alternate dimension Zooey Deschanel and Ryan Reynolds. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Ben - I noticed you’re wearing a Whoop. I know it’s a bit outside of your usual video topics, but would love to get your perspective via a video on why you chose it.
I love the Rivian, but this is the best advertisement for a hybrid for road trips. Charging just isn't there yet. Also, disappointing that you had so many issues with only 10k miles.
With respect to the built-in mechanical roll-up tonneau cover ... I hope there is (or will be) a "delete" option on the configurator ... I much prefer the manually operated fabric roll-up tonneau cover like the one I have on my Nissan Frontier. Much better ... simple, flexible, "KISS" principle at play.
Come on man. The other charging networks are totally inadequate in number and also don't tend to be reliably working. I have a CCS adapter for my Model Y and so far haven't used it due to chargers not working. Even Tesla Superchargers aren't everywhere but are way better than the others.
I did experience chargers not working for the first time in 6 months. Used the one that was working called EA to reboot the others and they came right up. Use plug share to check the status of the chargers before planning your trip. I had witnessed superchargers not working or not charging before. It happens.
Did you have a 240v cord for your Rivian? And did the places you stayed have electric dryers? They are mostly 3 prongs some 4, but you can safely charge at 20amps 240 volts from a dryer plug.
This is pretty essential for road tripping to random Airbnbs or other houses. A bit hacky to unplug dryers and run cords through windows but dryer extension cables are super cheap on Amazon
It seems like you really want to like the truck but it’s taking a lot of self convincing. I get the impression that you may not like it all that much. I appreciate the honest review however. This video helped me realize that the Rivian is not for me.
My 2022 Honda Ridgelinecost $43k. It averages 20 mpg. While averaging 10K mikes per year, my RL fuel cost will be around $1500/yr at $3.00/gallon. I could drive my RL for 30 years to offset the extra cost of the Rivian. The cost of EV's need to drop to make financial sense.
Really about what I expect I'm gonna get an electric vehicle We're going to work but for these trips I'm definitely going to keep my 20 year old pick up truck
Tesla model y might not be better than a rivian. But Tesla chargers are so far ahead of every other company . I bought my bolt 400 miles away from home . All the chargers in route were broke or not there . All! Thank you triple a platinum for my 1 200 mile tow and 4 100 mile tows as I just had me and the car towed home . My M3P has been from OK to maine and to Las Vegas with zero issues. I went full electric but if you have to road trip non Tesla infrastructure is just not there yet. I’ll use other brands for local within use but road-trips are such a fail on other brands especially in winter .
Not sure if you restarted the R1T software when you had charging issues, but that might also be an option to fix charging issues. Thanks for your reviews!
I hate giving Elon money at this point but until the charging situation is better outside of Tesla I won’t be shopping other brands. Just completed a 3000 mile round trip in my 3 and it was flawless. My past EVs and really any other brands outside of Tesla now could never attempt that either at all or with the same level of comfort and ease.
EVs are great for city driving and charging at home - unmapped road trips are full of anxiety for any EV. Tesla chargers were great when it was just model S / X now it’s just too busy. I have a lucid air at 470 miles range - real world more like 400 range which is more than enough to drive 2 hours away and back.
Please don't leave your vehicle plugged in overnight at a public/hotel charger. It's rude because you are blocking somebody else from being able to charge. Once it's charged, you should move the vehicle. Even if the parking lot is empty at the time you hooked up, you just don't know who is going to show up late needing a charge.
Most EV videos remind me that the charging network is SO FAR AWAY from being adequate for even 20% adoption. I don’t take our Ioniq 5 more than a few hours away from home because of this.
What a nightmare. Hopefully next generation of Rivian ( if they make it that far) are better. The charging infrastructure or lack there of sucks too. Who wants their whole trip or droning experience to be riddled with anxiety? Most people want to take the “re fueling” part of their vehicle for granted. Not the primary focus.
Ben been watching you for several years when I purchase a BEV it will be a Tesla. On the road charging for anything other than a Tesla is a disaster for Midwestern states. It is a no purchase for that alone. Don't sugarcoat this huge problem.
You need to join with other UA-camrs and start pressuring Electrify America. Their network is a total liability for EV owners. You are far from the only people to have problems. Our local EA setup in Salt Lake City has 8 units. 6 of them have been dead for weeks and the other two are capped at 35kW,
It's rather strange when it comes to range. Recently I drove from Atlanta to Charlotte. Had 90% battery covered 280 miles and had 40 miles left on the battery 🧐 Video is coming. For example my Tesla MODEL x 75D would show me I had 230 miles on a full charge if I was never able to get 200 out of it. I got 22" sport wheel configuration.
The biggest issue with the Rivian for me is that its build quality, durability and reliability is still unproven. I aint selling my Tacoma for no Rivian.
I’m worried some of these electric trucks are far too complicated. How about a nice simple, straightforward, no bells and whistles electric truck less things to break
He drove it over a mountain range so it isn’t really fair to say infer that doesn’t live up the EPA estimated range with that off hand “catchy comment” during the intro. I have the 20” ATs and routinely get over 300 miles of range on mine.
Nothing about towing capability? My understanding is that these EV trucks are only getting about 1/3 of the range when towing. For many truck owners, that's an automatic and enthusiastic no thank you. I'd also be very concerned about the financial state of Rivian... the odds of the company surviving the next several years is looking less than favorable.
The charging problem is why I won't buy a electric vehicle it can barely take u from city to city then u have to wait hours to charge its a fun toy but not something I would get to be reliable
Every review of a Rivian I watch is the same 1-the software is “ nit there yet” and 2-charging is less than an optimal experience. These are pretty important things to be having problems with for an EV. Maps that send you to the wrong destination should be a serious red flag. I get it they are a startup sp these are “first or early adopter” issues but you are not seeing the same level issues woth software from other EV manufacturers introducing their new cars into the market. These are expensive trucks and SUVs that should come with a working maps app day one. I cannot talk most of frioends into an EV due to the problems with non-Tesla charging networks. These are not insignificant problems for someone new to EVs. Sure we are all veteran owners so we can figure this stuff out but that is the problem right you have to have a great deal of experience with EVs to successfully own a Rivian.
With all of the issues, I am glad my max pack r1t pre-order was postponed until 2024. Also free energy exists so battery powered EVs vehicles could become obsolete in the near future.
@@ben3989 it's one of many suppressed technologies. Look into Tesla and the reasons why his tech was suppressed. Those for his free energy all conveniently died on the titanic. We've had the technology to harness free energy by utilizing the ions in the atmosphere. Every single system of control from religion to education to fiat currency ETC has enslaved humanity for far too long. Forces of light are now changing that. Free energy and medical tech that actually heals us will be available on Earth in the coming years. All depends on who actually wins the Shadow war that has been brewing for decades.
Not sure why you would choose the Rivian over the Cybertruck. Oh ya the Cybertruck isn’t in production yet. It’s only 3 years late.
😅 and it’s hideous

Sure we are all veteran owners so we can figure this stuff out but that is the problem right you have to have a great deal of experience with EVs to successfully own a Rivian.
Sounds like a very poor experience with a relatively new car manufacturer. You guys definitely miss Tesla charging experience for road trips.
Wow, she’s pretty.
I drove an R1T today (launch edition) and was…
Underwhelmed is how I’d describe it overall. My model 3 performance has no worries - yet.
SUV does not handle as good as then truck for whatever reason. Not sure why
Are there still People who answer numbers who you don't recognize.
omg
Dang nice truck to bad its losing money each month.
Lv the rivian style, but buying it now $93k to much
With all of the issues, I am glad my max pack r1t pre-order was postponed until 2024. Also free energy exists so battery powered EVs vehicles could become obsolete in the near future.
Tell me more about this fee energy.
It is Tesla not Tezla
😅
