It's crazy how influenced we are to want things that others seem happy with. Life has now become one big marketing ploy to get you to constantly play catch up, it's exhausting. But to anyone reading this, it's ok to want a 'normal' 'average' life. Don't let other people's version of happiness deter you from your own.

The first-world's definition of average sounds like an absolute dream: stable job, upper middle class, white-picket-fence house, married with children and a puppy, etc. That's a dream lifestyle that so many people in the world will never even have access to. But apparently for some now it's considered lowly not to be or be on the way to become a millionaire? Lol sooo out of touch with reality, these people are way too caught up in the social media echo chamber. Embarrasing.

You know what's crazy, as a Christian I've also felt this same pressure from within the church. This message that we all have the calling to do something absolutely groundbreaking and incredible. I recently landed on this verse in 1 Thessalonians 4:11 '... aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands' and it's given me so much peace. I recently got a promotion and I have no plans of going any higher within my career if it means less time/energy for me as a wife and mother. I want to be a awesome wife and a mum and I refuse to let work interfere with that goal.

The worst part of wanting to be normal is everyone else expecting something more of you. For example I nanny and parents are always asking me what’s next. As if I should want more to my life than to watch kids all day. It always baffles me that people think that we should sit behind a desk in a leadership position, always be in school “bettering” ourselves, or just doing something to “improve” and find a new source of income. Like I would much rather deal with kids all day than toxic corporate America. Work is literally traumatizing in leadership positions whether you’re the CEO or not. Especially for people with color. I just want to exist and be the rule, not the exception.

He's got an engineering degree, very smart yet he chose a job that doesn't require much brains and no engineering degree, pays well and he does the bare minimum. His classmates all work slaving away at the big corporations and earn way more but he just doesn't care. My anxiety and depression was super bad for the last several years and my personal health just plummeted. Well the average income in the US is around $51,000 a year, so $70,000 is indeed above average. As someone who has been in leadership positions, being a boss isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes it can take you away from the ground level work you love. It’s one thing to be a stylist, but it’s something totally different to run a company that employs 70 stylists. You will surely have to take a step back from actually being a stylist. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you’re committed to the process and not just the perceived results.

It’s frustrating how social media and these gurus stress the life of the hustle and make people like me feel bad for not doing it. It’s crazy that I’m 21 and I feel so unaccomplished in life, forgetting that I’m still so young with so much life ahead of me. I’ve also felt unambitious for wanting to live a simple life. I’ve tried running around looking for a “passion” that would make me rich and successful and it was so exhausting and demoralising for me. I truly do want a simple life, that’s not based on riches and fortune. I don’t mind only going on holiday once a year, not having the biggest house, latest car or technologies, because I’ve found that the pursuit of these things doesn’t make me happy. Explaining this to family who expect soo much out of you is soo hard. All I know is we can’t ALL be rich. Lol

thank you for this - I saw an ad for the paleo fx conference and one of the panels was literally called "in the future everyone will be an entrepreneur!"
and I'm just like no?? they won't??? also, the not so subtle condescension of people who are not trying to get rich quick thru entrepreneurship is reaching peak levels of ridiculous now. I work in commercial insurance for a large agency and I love it because I only have to worry about whats in front of me instead of thinking about my business 24/7.
also, I used to subscribe to so many female businesses from Instagram bc they were more focused on empowering women but now all of them are selling courses on how to make six figure months and talking about their amazing easy rich lives and I've started unsubscribing from all of them. it just all sounds so godamn tone deaf with what most folks are dealing with right now, not to mention that the only reason these women are making six figures a month is bc they're selling overpriced courses to other coaches.

Thank for bringing up this discussion. I work in tech, and beyond the push for entrepreneurialism, there is also pressure from people in both my social media and personal networks that say: "if you're not hustling and job-hopping every 1-2 years, what're you even doing?? You're missing out on amazing salary and promotion!" While job hopping works great for some, myself and a few other close friends are content (even happy!) with our roles, pay and companies of employment. I don't currently feel pressure to stress myself out with chasing where the "grass is greener" and that can be labelled as unambitious but honestly... I don't care anymore lol. My mental wellbeing and work-life balance are way more important to me now.

@@megsley I completely agree with you, I think it's solid to see at least 3-5 years (or more) on a resume to show reliability. As Adella said, there is a sweet spot between being a loyal employee and having boundaries/moving if the job doesn't suit you.
But again, job-hopping has become very trendy recently and tech companies will hire (at least in my city), because they need the workers! It's very interesting.

I remember being a teen and wanting a simple life. Then I became friends with an older woman, who was a dentist by the way, that started to tell me I should marry rich and switch fields and become a doctor and leave the country and marry well. And being so young, I abandon what I originally wanted for what she told me instead and pursued that lifestyle. It exhausted me. Never met a rich man, still single and content with my career choice. People can influence you indeed and we tend to think that just having a life where your needs are met along with some of your wants is not good enough and somehow you would have failed and would be settling. Especially seeing social media glamorize a certain lifestyle over a simple life. Well I'm 25 and I'm okay with having a simple life. Its too much of a hassle for me.

She didn't want to be apart of the hustle & bustle and I feel that so much. I always said if I didn't have a passion for singing, acting, and writing, I would go and live remote by the mountains because there is nothing wrong with being normal or "average". While I don't consider myself talented in entrepreneurship through my work I have gotten real first hand and hands on experience on what business is like. Ugh I feel this so much. I really want to just live a normal, simple life of routine and enjoyment. But the constant pressure to be something bigger and fulfill my family's dreams (I'm Indian) keeps me paralyzed. If it's not a good enough job I know what I'm going to hear - all the negatives, why didn't I become a doctor or engineer, etc. But, because no one listened to all of my cries for help as a child, my less-than-perfect academic record (due to untreated and ignored but incredibly obvious ADHD) makes me feel inadequate and undeserving of success. Regardless, I am "not enough." It's a terrifying place to be - newly recognized as learning disabled, trying to work through negative self thought and toxic family behavior, and feeling like I'm not allowed to take the time to grow on my own before accomplishing something I'm "supposed" to do to make everyone proud. Whew. I am in therapy guys don't worry LOL

For most of my life (my family/friends) have encouraged me to give up my hobbies in exchange for more income. The result: I have not made more income and I have a less positive outlook on life.. Hopefully, one day I hope to follow my intuition instead of being persuaded by others.
BTW, your hair looks beautiful and healthy! Keep up the great work.

I'm not a very ambitious person. I suck at multitasking too. Recently, I almost got depressed because I was struggling mentally to change myself. It didn't feel like I was doing enough and it sucked to see people doing far better and planning their futures. But, I'm better now, and honestly I'll just keep doing what I can when I can.

Thank you SO much for this message. Everyone i follow really have this mentality and when you disagree , they take it as we are afraid of money or something . Some of us are not interested in living a luxurious life , i really do believe that ppl are so obcessed with materialistic things , they equal it to "success" and happiness . What is funny is that they always seem to lack a serious relationship for example , most of them are single , so I supposed that was the sacrifice they don't even realize are making . Thank you so much for this 🙏

Hate to bring Kevin Samuels talk round here lol (bit of a sour topic since his passing) but that was one of my takeaways from him. He berated many women but he kept hammering on the point that they are average and for some reason it was seen as an insult. To the point the whole “average at best” thing blew up. All that made me think was what’s so wrong with that? Have we “self loved” and “self-developed” ourselves to the point we have to give ourselves a grandiose self image and be aghast if called average? There’s nothing wrong with it and admitting you fall into this category.

    • @viceanterra3
      @viceanterra3 2 роки тому

He never meant it as an insult. One of his biggest messages was that average is fine. He was mostly hammering the point that if you're average you should seek average partners.

Also people don’t stop to think about how race affects these desires to “have it all” and be the boss. If you’re always programmed to NEED to be 5x as good as others do even be considered, you’re creating your whole life around the perspective of other people who may employ you or use your business/service. Instead of understanding who you are and what you want as a POC.

There’s a song by Alan Jackson called Itty Bitty that perfectly encapsulates this idea:
Have a little love on a little honeymoon
You got a little dish and you got a little spoon
A little bitty house and a little bitty yard
A little bitty dog and a little bitty car
Well, it's alright to be little bitty
A little hometown or a big old city
Might as well share, might as well smile
Life goes on for a little bitty while
A little bitty baby in a little bitty gown
It'll grow up in a little bitty town
A big yellow bus and little bitty books
It all started with a little bitty look
Well, it's alright to be little bitty
A little hometown or a big old city
Might as well share, might as well smile
Life goes on for a little bitty while

Some people can’t even be average, most are suffering below average and still acting like their more than both. Personally I am average but I want more outta of life. I think a lot people don’t understand, we all start out average and we work harder to not be on that level anymore.

  • @zhinningenge1754
    @zhinningenge1754 Рік тому +2

Average means you're where you should be, compared to others, based on tried and true assessments. The types of algorithms defining "average" tell us what milestones to look for as our children grow.
The question is: do you want a healthy, happy baby or one that walks at 7 months, for bragging rights? Most would agree that they would be greatful for a child who hits expected milestones and is equipped to function in the general society.
So if you're in your mid-20s, for example, you should focus on being able to support yourself (rent, bills, healthcare, etc.). The pressure to become "above average" has fueled the "failure to launch" trend among today's young adults. Why aim for average when you can fake it till you make it from your parents' basement on social media?
    By the way:
There is no such thing as a life that's better than yours.

Personally, I don’t see myself wanting to become an entrepreneur. I don’t have the creativity or the motivation to work for myself. And like knowing when I’ll get paid instead of chasing after people to respond to my invoices. There’s enough stress in this life😭. I just want to do well and excel in my career. But I respect those who have the passion and motivation to become an entrepreneur

I just want a simple life focused on my loved ones and having a fulfilling personal life with hobbies and creative pursuits. I hate working and would happily give up in the future if privileged enough to do so (e.g. career break to focus on kids if I'm able to have kids and partner able to support us for a while). I keep going for now so I can buy a house with my partner and hopefully have better options down the line. Rent is more expensive than mortgages in Ireland so ironically I should actually have more options to go part time or take a lower salary but more fulfilling job after buying a house.

For a while, I have accepted that mediocrity/average isn’t something that I’m averse to, and it has helped guide my actions/form my principles. I don’t know if that makes sense.
One thing, I do take into consideration, though, is environment. I’m Nigerian, and I live in Nigeria. Even when you tell yourself that you never want to become that person that’s constantly chasing what society has said needs to be chased, you find that getting the bare minimum only happens when YOU chase.
The average person ( which at this point is nuanced) in Nigeria STRIVESSSS just to be able to have food in their bellies, a safe place to live, access to what those in more developed countries might call basic.
Throw faith and spirituality into the mix and it’s a different story. So, now I say that only God is able to conjure the kind of life that I see for myself

As a side note, this video seemed to me to be strangely skin-deep when it came to talking about this topic, which seems unusual coming from Adella. On top of that, such a big percentage of the video's time was allocated to talking about a sponsor... It seems weird to me considering most of your videos tend to focus on the discussion and analysis in a more in-depth manner. Just something I noticed and wanted to give feedback on (I mean well, I generally watch and enjoy the videos from this channel).

Who would the entrepreneurs life of if it's not from the 9-5 workers that work for them, and the costumers that are also 9-5 workers but work for somebody else?
Most entrepreneurs work more than 8 hours a day, at least in the begging. They may not work for a boss or an owner, but they still buy stuff to other entrepreneurs and work to satisfy the employees.
You can't get out of the system by being an entrepreneur. We all depend on each other and don't exist individually. Until we don't understand that, the bad in the world won't stop. The bad is made by people that think they they are better than average and more important than most people. Not realizing how they need the rest of us.
Btw, this video was too shorts. It's not telling us nothing new nor isn't an opinion. What is this video about? Half of it was the introduction and the sponsor. I'm sorry, but this was way below my expectations.

I think this is kind of the point Kevin Samuels was making. By the definition most of us are average. And he made the simple argument that it doesn’t make sense for an average women to think she is too good for an average man. Of course we always want better but our outcomes are normally a result of who we actually are.… great video btw me and my friends have this conversation all the time
