  • My Review for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Campaign
Call of Duty Modern Warfare III (MW3) 2023 is the latest Game in the Call of Duty Modern Warfare Franchise from developers Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and most importantly in this case Sledgehammer Games. Modern Warfare 3 follows the story of Captain Price, Soap MacTavish, Ghost, General Shepherd, Vladimir Makarov, and the rest of Task Force 141. In this latest entry, Makarov, General Shepherd and Captain Price are out to either start or prevent World War 3. In this game we get the reimagined version of No Russian which turned out to be a massive disappointment compared to the original No Russian Mission in MW2. The story of the game is very bad and down right trash at times and the campaign only lasts for a little over 3 hours with 2 of those hours being taken up by cutscenes making Modern Warfare III feel like a glorified movie game. To put it frankly, Modern Warfare 3 Absolutely Sucks and is a Pathetic excuse for a game trying to live up to the Modern Warfare 3 name, at least in terms of the campaign. The verdict is still out on MW3's Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone 3 if they pan out to be better than MWII 2022. Only time will tell but I wouldn't waste your time playing the campaign for Modern Warfare 3 on PS5 Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and the PC. The Modern Warfare 3 Full Campaign Playthrough is only 2 Hours and Modern Warfare 3 all cutscenes is 2 of those. Not to mention the Modern Warfare 3 ending is HORRIBLE compared to the original.

    Algorithm Stuff:
Microsoft has finally finished their attempt to buy Activision Blizzard and they now own Activision Blizzard King after the UK officially approves the purchases. Activision Blizzard will be the newest addition to Xbox Game Studios working on Exclusive Games for the Xbox Series X & Xbox Series S, as well as Xbox Game Pass. After an almost 2 year battle with regulators in the US (FTC) and UK (CMA), Microsoft officially has a clear path forward to complete the purchase for $69 Billion. This means Call of Duty, Diablo, World of Warcraft, Overwatch 2, etc... are now part of Xbox's first party lineup. Activision Blizzard marks the 2nd major publisher Microsoft has purchased in the past few years following their acquisition of Bethesda which recently released the xbox exclusive Starfield. As a result of this news PS5 Fanboys are ANGRY and in full damage control as you would expect from PlayStation fanboys. Of course Dreamcastguy is already changing the narrative claiming he was never worried about the deal being a monopoly or consolidating the industry but is instead concerned about Microsoft laying off developers lmao. Leave it to PS5 fanboys to shift the goal post once again after claiming for months the deal would never go through.

I went in with zero expectations and still left disappointed. I hope Modern Warfare campaigns can go back to how they were during the 360 era and not this pseudo Warzone mission crap. Fingers crossed multiplayer delivers cause that’s all I care about when it comes to Modern Warfare these days unfortunately.

I remember there was a scene in the beginning of old MW2, it was pretty much the first mission, where after defending a bridge, a jets came by and dropped some bombs, leveling a building. You could notice other soldiers actually recording it on their phones!
Just that detail itself felt far more realistic than anything else. Soldiers are still humans and recording cool stuff is very human-like.

That’s why we get these movie games that rely solely on cutscenes to tell the story. They write a generic tv show script and stick gameplay in between, no cohesion with the game designer. Back then most of the game designer were the writers so they were better equipped to tell the story through gameplay.

Glad you liked Makarov in this game. I thought his writing was extremely weak, and none of his plans worked out due to good planning. They worked out due to insane coincidences. The only things he does to be "bad" is to kill people, but he has NO motivation, and nothing that makes him feel like a real character. He's a simple clown makeup away from a bad russian Joker cosplayer. The actor did very well with what he had, but what he had was shit. The Warzone like gameplay looked appealing for newcomers. But now that I know it's taken from warzone I see the problem. They could do something with this if they do it right, the openness allows for some really nice missions. What I think they could do with this is have a recon stage for higher difficulties first where they could use that to enhance the story and plot. You can reuse the dialogue wheel that is underutilized to talk to teammates as you're scouting. So you could ask the your a.i squad mates to setup here or there, setup the overwatch and spotter at this hill or tower, and tell your other squad members where we go in, and whos gonna be doing each task in the squad. Then the next step is the operation itself, had you not planned, you'd be in a hell of a firefight, and it offers a challenge and appeases the casual. On higher difficulties, that recon stage becomes more and more important. Lets say on the 3rd highest difficulty, you have the freedom to be as experimental as you want with the mission with a small amount of planning, On the 4th or 5th highest, you'd have to play like a real spec ops solider, watching the patrols, where our targets are, and where we can infil, setup, and exfil.

Playing with the main characters is part of whats messing up the campaign. I didnt think of it like that. In the older CODs once Soap moved up in rank you rarely ever played with him again and almost never played with price, so whenever you did you knew the mission had some sort of significance. In this campaign every single mission was played by a main character or leader. So they just drop you in there by yourself like some sort of super soldier and basically tell you "do whatever you want just complete these 3-4 objectives and we'll come back and pick you up when you're done". Then after you wreak havoc and leave you go and do the exact same thing again in a different location, and the AI act as if they're completely unaware of how you just obliterated one of their other posts. It's laughably bad thinking about it now.

Everything from the suburban setting to the ominous dark lighting and haunting music sold the vision of DC on fire. Sure it's massively unrealistic and the story is actually ridiculous when you think it over, but it's also cool as hell and done with such intensity that you can't help but buy into it. I know for a fact that not only that gaming companies want to make more cutscenes than actual gameplay cause they want to look the best but they also want us to lose taking control of certain actions or scenarios cause they don’t want us to be violent against evil people so they take away our decisions to judge.

The cutscenes should have at least had dialogue options. Even if they didn’t change the outcome, having the option to pick the character’s words and see the N.P.C’s different responses would have made the cutscenes *FAR* less tedious.

I really like what he mentioned about the "scale" of what you do affects the game. Unpopular opinion but thats what I really liked about the Ghosts campaign. Particularly the space missions because they kinda switched the views to see the effects of what you were doing. It was super cool. Old cods kinda had this cinematic were you could see the effects of what you were doing from different perspectives.
I cant fully remember but the satellite/massive space cannon basically fell from space when you blew it up and then it panned the camera to the ground and you could see the debris fall. It was super cool, and i havent seen anything like that in the latest cods. Its a shame because the campaigns were truly masterfully crafted and well written. MW3 (2009) was a cinematic masterpiece and still feels like a movie, with the music and action. It's honestly a shame that we dont get to experience this shit again in higher fidelity / better engines.

With the passenger mission there was a easy oppertunity for the woman with the vest to just run and jump out of the door to save the plane, maybe even catching makarov with the explosion, she just get dragged by 1 arm through the plane by that guy and then he tosses the phone, which tbh I think that was a cool concept, and yeah Farah is just a joke... if she didn't have that stereotypical bb attitude, spoke less, maybe an eye patch, just made some clutch plays in the cinematics she could of easily been implemented into COD without too much fuss, but no... we are at an era where they literally get sassy to the SAS

Yeah I noticed that too and I couldn't figure it out. It pissed me off deeply, and I'm someone who will often restart whole stealth missions if I'm discovered even once. It gives my immersion a small boost knowing that the enemies just simply never spotted me and that's how I pulled the mission off, instead of running around getting spotted 9 times and the enemy apparently being too lazy to chase me 50 meters back the way I came from and tighten security & send out search teams: like what would happen in real life.

Thanks for this. I bought MW2 when it came out even though i had no real desire to get it because i only play COD for the campaigns anyway. I've been having buyer's remorse with it ever since. The campaign was poor and I completed it in two days tops. I tried to make an effort with the multiplayer and Warzone/season update content but it just gave me a migraine and I realised i didn't care enough to waste what little free time I have in trying to figure out how any of it worked. I see no reason based on this review that MW3 will be any better, especially since I watched a play through of the campaign the other day and it was absolute crap. Once bitten, twice shy.

Soap's death being on par with Joel is a very good comparison. In the OG MW Trilogy, there was build up before he died at the big reveal that Makarov knew Yuri. Here Soap basically got demoted from "Protagonist" to "Mauve Shirt" status and died like one.
The "No Balls" movie energy exuded throughout Reboot MW Trilogy is foul asf.

The armor aspect is a great shout. It breaks flow, it breaks immersion (no armor on the planet can do what the COD armor can do), it essentially breaks weapon balance too. Agree with your points and your assessment of MW2 except to say that I actually liked the AC130 mission quite a lot. Was rewarding and seamless if you were rly into maintaining ROE. the armor, it has no place in a call of duty campaign or at least visually as a blue icon, when I shoot someone in a campaign and see the armor icon pop up and hear “ding, ding, ding” it just kills the immersion immediately and feels like I just decided to play DMZ solo for six hours and I’m the kinda guy who’s spent a lot of hours playing mw2 co op solo and thinks that’s one of the funnest parts of the game lol
