This is beyond cool. I know this video was made awhile ago, but ya'll deserve props for rehabilitating this baby. Not many people could stand the site of this! Good on both of you!

Great job trying to help out !This owl is a fledgling and more than likely it did'nt fall out of it's nest, rather it was in it's " brancher" stage.Hops from branch to branch.
As far as imprinting.LOL!! So many people want to lecture, yet they don't even know the lesson. It's not like if you touch a baby bird WHAM , they're imprinted. I've raised owls from a few days after hatching, They learn to hunt by themselves, it's an instinct. You release them gradually, and then feed every now an then.

I hope the people in the video have a falconry glove, because when that owl grows up he will have sharp talons. Also I low they where acting with the best intentions but that owl should have been left there to be found by its parents it was just being fledged.

@@emilyjohnson6096 no that's not how it goes. You aren't supposed to touch them. Wildlife management will tell you that majority of the time it was being taught how to fly

You are right about the fledgling in the1st stages of flight, but it would still be better off at a rehab facility. They have flight cages that they can put them in with other screech owls to prepare them for freedom with their own kind. There are rehab centers in every state and they are free.Contact a vet or Game Officer. Many times someone will transport it to the center. If it's injured, they will fix it.If you live in the US, it is illegal, and if you're caught expensive, to have a bird!

So many people complaining about them handling the bird, but not everyone has the luxury of living close to a place that will take baby owls.
I do not know their situation, but I do know that I found a baby raptor and wasn't able to take it somewhere because there was nowhere to take it. A vet had to help me care for it until it was of age to be set free.

--- PLEASE do not pick up an owl that is on the ground unless it is hurt. It is NOT uncommon to find young owls on the ground during the fall. They are out of their nest because they are learning how to fly (FLEDGLING). Their parents will be near by keeping a close eye on them and may even come down to feed them in the evenings. It is a federal offense to keep an owl in the U.S. without a special license.

I know that 10 months ago is too late for this little bird, but I'm speaking to all the people that are influenced by these videos into thinking that these birds are pets. If you live anywhere but the US they are not protected. In the US,falconers go through extensive training and are tested to get a license before getting a bird.I had a license for 23 years because I was a rehabber. These animals deserve freedom.A legitimate rehabilitation facility(it's free) is the best chance for the animal .

If you find a bird on the ground, whether injured, orphaned,or separated from its family, there are several things you can do to help it.You can try to determine if it's injured,so if it's moving normally, holding its wings close to the body, and both eyes are open and alert,it may be able to be put up in a tree.Any tree in the area is fine as long as there are no cats or dogs in the yard.Otherwise, contact a vet or Game Officer. Many times someone will transport it to a rehabilitation center for you.

Yes, in a perfect world it would have stayed up in the trees. Plan B, a rehab place. But what the people in this video did IS admirable IMO.

You two are exceptional raptor parents! So many people don’t get the feeding these adorable children require and they miss out and end up in bad health. I know of an owl that ended up thankfully in a sanctuary because it couldn’t fly. The people that had it from birth fed it hamburger not realising these birds need fur, guts, and bones. Maybe there really is a god.

Parakeets are INEXPENSIVE,easy to feed,so cute! entertaining, and like to have their head scratched, too. They come in many colors. They can be taught to talk,if you get a male, and they can be taught tricks. You can get a book from the library on how to train and care for them.If you want to spend more money, parrots are even better, but get a small one.If you can afford about $400,Rainbow Lorikeets are beautiful&don't bite.Best of all, they are all legal and require no permit. There are bird fairs.

This video really needs a disclaimer. If you find an owl of any age, CALL A WILDLIFE REHABBER. Google your area and wildlife rehab. These birds belong in the wild or in the hands of a licensed rehabber, not your kitchen. Sure they are cute but they should not be kept as pets (and it's illegal)

    • @josiem4562

Nicole Carey if the vets allow it or any athoroties allow it it's ok, maybe when it's bigger they'll let the wildlife center have it but for now, it's perfectly fine. i don't see anything wrong with this. besides if the owl imprints on the people then it'll be kinda hard to let it go... besides the illegal pet trade was shut down ages ago. (it's just my opinion, don't attack me with "your dead wrong" i am autistic, i just said what i thought you should know)

I agree with harbor2turtles. You should've returned it to it's nest or where you found it. Let nature take it's course. Don't immediately assume it needs help and try to save it. Do the right thing and let it go. Don't imprison it. Dont' keep it as a pet. You just took away one more bird from the species that could other wise continue to reproduce it's self. Your helping in the demise of this species.

Unfortunately, this owl is probably imprinted on humans now and won't know how to hunt in the wild. I'm sure you thought you were doing the right thing, but you should NEVER take in a wild animal, even if you think it needs your help. Call animal control or a rehabilitator if you find one that you really think is in danger.

handled by someone who's licensed and that once they're 'rehabbed to go back to the wild' they do. when they can't be ..then (people who tried to save the wild raptor/ animal) either euth or make a strong case for how that (raptor/ animal) may be used for 'educational purposes.'

Owls are not pets, they are wild animals. When you hand feed owls, they imprint on humans and cant be released back into the wild. Also, they eat cut up mice at this age. Not insects and whole hoppers. Please call someone with a falconry license or a wildlife rehabilitation center before handling owls.

What you are doing is admirable but you must know that it is against federal law to posses any migratory bird unless you are a licensed falconer or rehab facility. You can and most likely will be charged with a felony if found in possession of this animal without having notified a local game warden or wildlife rehabilitation facility. Your heart is big but you must remember to government doesn't give a shit about that.
