    @jarred92993 That's so sweet! I wish more people like you were out there doing this. I just read in a book it's up to people and nature to help these animals survive. I just got through caring for a baby woodpecker and had released it on Xmas morning Dec 25th, 2011 Sunday. I had to care from him since Thursday Dec 22nd, 2011. It took days to get his strength back and to gain full flight. My cousin's kids found him and couldn't find his parents, nest or siblings and he was weak.

    Like snakes, bird's windpipe, believe it or not is under the tongue. It is a hole under the tongue where the vet would place a tube for oxygen/anesthesia during surgery. Weird, but that's where I heard it was at and so I see in some pics as well.

    @Swiftpaw Of course, I haven't happened up on any bird bigger than the woodpecker I had found. All I know is that you can see the hole in your basic songbirds when you open their mouth by gently pulling on the tuft under their chin to open their beaks. That's the safest way to open their mouths for feeding or forcefeeding when they won't eat. You have to go over that hole and down into the crop and inject slowly a small amount at a time. The hole near the tongue leads to the trachea.

    @silverbulletgirl29 ..."Garbage" parts of the prey. The one thing you CAN remove if you so wish are the internal organs (heart, stomach, intestines, and in the case of mammals the bladder,) as the bird is more likely to toss those parts aside, or amuse themselves with them briefly as opposed to eating them.

    @silverbulletgirl29 ...would typically eat as an adult, and in fact it is actually very important for them to draw nutrients from part of prey such as the fur, feathers and bones; it helps with the development of their wings, and can be detrimental if they are not included in their diet. The same goes for just about any prey bird. The nutrients they get from proper prey is important to their health. That's why if you were to feed a young owl chopped up mice you would need to include the...

    And as far as the crop feedings go, you have to wait until the bird is relaxed before injecting the food contents into the crop a little at a time. The bird will swallow the feeding tube/needle and not fight you when it's relaxed and that's when you can confirm proper placement, but that's all I know.

    A wild animal has a different understanding of what the purpose of a human is. Unlike a pet, who grows up around people and learns that they are "nice" and the "food givers", a wild owl will first see the people are a direct threat.
    I'm sure this owl is just going along with it all, already in the "giving" up stage because of its injuries and as the poster said, a possible concussion from being hit by a car.

  • @silverbulletgirl29
    @silverbulletgirl29 12 років тому

    @Swiftpaw Ah! I must look this up. Thanks for this invaluable information. I succeeding in rehabilitating the woodpecker we had with a proper diet and the release went well, but I've always wondered what to feed the other birds and much larger ones as well. Inject it straight into the Ventriculus you say? What's that? And you say the young owls can be fed chopped up mice? I must take notes. I'm making a book on what to feed wild birds & their care so I can look up the info in case.

    the owlet was lucky you came along. I like stories such as this. Consider yourselves lucky to get the opportunity to ''share'' time w/ him. His left eye seems to be still ''injured''. perhaps you can ask a bird vet if it will heel on it's own , or if theres something you can do for his eye. I sincerely hope he wasn't blinded by whatever it was that happened to him. perhaps when you release him to the wild, he might come back for a visit from time to time, Animals have a way of doing that.

    I don't think I would've had the ability to stay up all night for a bird like an owl, however. You see, Twiggy slept at night finally and I was able to get some sleep. But I had to wake up at 5:30 in the morning to prepare his meals and feed him around the clock until it was nighttime again until he went to sleep. He did nap between meals but he would wake up and start hammering at his carrier when he was hungry and I'd had to feed him again, and let him exercise and move about.

    So you're saying it would have been better for him to leave iut there? It doesn't matter if there are bigger problems, helping anyone in a good thing to do. In my eyes, he is a fantastic person. A person who helps a starving child is ALSO a fantastic person. No reason to comment about worse problems, when tall this person did was make one more problem go away.

  • @AidanChaos
    @AidanChaos 12 років тому

    Yes but the difference is people who will do something even if it is small, then nothing at all. Every little bit counts. Compassion is important, even for just an owl. Still a living being.

  • @Swiftpaw
    @Swiftpaw 12 років тому

    For a recovering bird pre-frozen, and then thawed whole mice/rats/or quail (depending on the bird,) is best. Live prey wouldn't be introduced until the bird is fully recovered, and ready to be assessed as to whether or not it can be released back into the wild. What you did was basically this same concept on a smaller scale (which is okay with smaller owls like screech owls.) The fact he was hunting was a good sign he was ready to be released.

  • @Swiftpaw
    @Swiftpaw 12 років тому

    @silverbulletgirl29 I meant to say Proventriculus, but confused my terminology. The proventriculus is the organ that possesses the proper enzymes for the bird to break down it's food, after which it passes to the ventriculus (or the gizzard,) which in owls will actually compress the indigestible parts of their food into a pellet for them to cough up later. Young raptors would normally be fed ripped up bits of the prey their parent catches. From hatching they're able to digest the prey they...

  • @baezport
    @baezport 12 років тому

    I hope you feed the little guy a diet complete mouse parts, they are so specialized that 100 percent of a mouse is needed, eyes, bones, guts, head, tail, etc. or they can get "glass joints" where their bones fuse and have major major problems. Great job!

  • @Swiftpaw
    @Swiftpaw 12 років тому

    @silverbulletgirl29 Since this particular owl isn't a baby, it can swallow whole mice, or if it refuses to eat, you can force feed it cut up mouse. It shouldn't need more then 30g's of mouse.

  • @baezport
    @baezport 12 років тому

    Silverbullitgirl29 is incorrect. Owls specifically need to eat the entire rodent. They need intestines, eyes, head, tail, etc. They will die of nutritional losses if not fed real, whole mouse parts. Many owls get "glass" joints from people who do not feed them properly, and their wings and joints are fused for life.....Owls are incredible. But their care is incredible too. Way to go guys.....

    Great video. Whenever I rescue animals, the first indication that they're going to be OK is when they eat. Eating in the main thing in survival. Sometimes it just takes a while, then I set them free. We have to let Nature take its course. Any updates on the owl?

  • @silverbulletgirl29
    @silverbulletgirl29 12 років тому

    @Swiftpaw And if you feed this owl mice is live food better or do you thaw out a frozen one? In captive animals, they say killed/frozen is better to prevent injury to your pet but in wild animals, I suppose live stimulates their predatory instincts necessary for survival. When I rehabbed Twiggy, I let loose crickets on the floor and he chased and gobbled up every one and flew to them, then we released Twiggy the next morning.

  • @PolicyofSecrecy

    True, if you cant love animals, then you will never be able to respect humans. Animals are pure and innocent creatures. I will never harm an animal! I will not allow anyone to harm an animal if its in my power and controll to prefend it from happening. I can't say i feel completely the same about humans though.

  • @silverbulletgirl29

    I know one thing, I'm not sure what you feed a hatchling/nestling/fledgling owl, but I hear the parent birds regurgitate the food. That's something I wouldn't do for a bird and human saliva is dangerous to all birds I've read. So I suppose a pinkie mouse thrown into a blender would be the first thing to feed a newborn baby owl. Has anyone ever crop fed a bird with those feeding needles? I have two but never used them before b/c a 1cc syringe is safer & put food inside beak over tongue.
