Very interesting. The shotguns sound better than the lavs *but* serve different purposes. I though the Rode sounded better than the Deity and couldn't really choose between the lavs. What was most interesting is how good the mics were on the Zoom. Unless there is a practical reason I might even be tempted to save the money and use it as a shotgun mic.
The H1n on its own is really a fantastic device. I can see the convenience of having the device at hand and the microphone elsewhere (being a shotgun or lav) either to operate the device, or power it with a powerbank. In general, (and at risk to hurt affiliate links), buy things only if you need them. If you only want them, well... it's still fun to get new gadgets :)
#1: Zoom H1n: Most pleasing to ear. Full range. Alive (thanks to Stereo-ness). #2: Deity D3 Pro (or) Rode VideoMicro. Disadvantage of D3 is it amps up bass at expense of sharpness (which VideoMicro is brilliant in). So both are #2. Personally, choosing VideoMicro, as couldn't bother having ANOTHER device to keep charged. #10: Both Laveliers are mediocre in quality (muffled, like talking through a pillow).
I haven't tried that, but bear in mind that it is a fairly directional mic (sh*tgun style). I'd say a stereo mic would work better, in the case of this video, the H1n itself with the integrated XY would likely be a better option.
Hey Roger, thanks for your test! TBO, the H1n on its own would be my favorite :). Am I right that you need to be quite close to it, due to its characteristic?
Hello, your video was just fantastic, great. I have a question. Can I connect the Deity D3 Pro to the Zoom H1n, can I also connect the Comica CVM.VM 20 to my Zoom H1n? Would be very kind if you could help me, can't find an answer for it anywhere, thank you, Greetings Frank
Hi Frank, I think so yes. The Deity D3 Pro for sure, I believe I did test it in this video. I can't confirm 100% because I don't have it, but based on the specs in their website it's pretty much the Comica CVM-VM20 is pretty much the same (a copy?) of the Deity D3 Pro.
@@RogerinFinland thank you very much for the quick answer, yes you tested the deity and your video helped me a lot, thank you very much and all the best, Frank
@@RogerinFinland Hello Finland, Hey Roger. I bought the Comica CVM-VM20 and tested it today with the Zomm H1N. It works very well, great sound quality and very well made. I thought you might be interested. Thanks for your help, stay healthy and all the best, regards Frank
Thanks for this awesome video. Really informative. P.S.: I have a Zoom H1n and a Rode VideoMicro. I am assuming that all needs to do is connect the VideoMicro to the H1n and start using it right away without any special settings inside the H1n. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again.
I bought H1n, and this is very helful! Thanks! :) Cans I know what is your recoarding setting? I think 48k / 16bit, right? Any way, thanks for your good rivew Roger! Take care. - from S. Korea
The H1n needs a TRS input. I can't remember what cable does the D3 Pro come with, and I can't remember either if the output is TRRS or TRS 😅 In summary, nothing too special.
Can you, please, provide a link for the tripod that you are using to mount the microphones or maybe how it it called? I really need one tripod for the microphone.
A have a clear delivery and I am really content with this video. It is perfect to my questions. I currently use a zoom h1 and a rode go so I never know whether the zoom audio will improve with the rode or if its better without it. What would you go for?
It depends on the use case actually. The H1n is an XY stereo microphone and the other a shotgun mic. For easiness though, the H1n on its own is tough to beat
great video. mine if I ask a question.. does anyone know how/where I can purchase with a BLACK shock mount and BLACK cord? most important is the BLACK shock mount. thanks your purchase link brings me to one with a RED shock mount
And my shock mount was black, but I bought it an eternity ago. It's possible that nowadays they come with the red one only. I'm pretty sure they don't have different versions with different colours 👍🏻
@@RogerinFinland you are right they switched it a while back. BUT i emailed them and they are sending me a black one they still had in stock. so lucky. thanks again
To record piano playing indoor, would it be better to use an external mic together with the H1N recorder which I have, rather than using the H1N recorder alone? Thanks.
When using an external microphone with the H1n, it only records that and the XY stereo mic is disabled. For a piano, my guess is that a stereo mic is a better solution (unless you'd mic it properly with several microphones, but I wouldn't know where to start from), so I'd say that the H1n alone is the way to go 👍🏻
I don't see how would you do it in any practical way. The H1n is a single channel stereo recorder, so the best you could hope for (using some jerry-rigged adapter) is to have two microphones per channel, And both channels (left and right) would have the same gain.
Can i use an external Mic and the XY Mic at the same time as an support Mic? That would be great when i try to record a singer an a guitar player at the same time with the option to edit booth tracks.
Hi Mr. Roger.. Nice video and information.. However i got a doubt that do we need 3.5 mm jackpin for using external microphone? I wanted to use it for recording a sound during shot film.. pls convey..
Hello. Not sure if I understand your question, but if you want to use an external microphone you'll need to plug it using a 3.5mm jack. Basically, things like the Rode VideoMicro will be OK, something like the Rode NTG-3 won't be OK.
I'm sure it's usable, since it's fairly similar to the Deity D3 Pro (or rather the Deity is similar to the Rode). About reliability, I've had and used the H1n for a couple of years and haven't had any issues, but it's been used indoors and fairly carefully. For the price it's a no brainer (in my opinion), but if you need ruggedness the plastic built might be a disappointment.
Hey Roger, can you connect a lavmic to H1N but use it as an audio interface to the computer? Does it improve the audio compare to like connecting it directly to the computer.
Hi there, yes you should be able to do that. As interface (or as recorder) the H1n is a one-stereo-tracl device. Once you plug something externally (like a lav) that's what you get. About the quality, I can't say because I haven't tried (though now I feel like I should make a video about it 😊). It also depends on the laptop, the lav and the combination. I have quite a backlog of videos, so this one might take a few weeks.
Can it be used? For sure, it's a microphone with a 3.5mm jack. Is it a great combo? Can't say since I've never used that microphone. So if @Rode wants to send me one, I'll happily test it 😳
Hello! I was wondering if you were able to come up with any solutions in terms of the RF noise caught in the deity while using wireless systems such as the rode wireless go? Is it just best not to use a 2.4GHz wireless system at the same time as the deity ? Thank you!
Haven't investigated the issue in depth, and I had some RF issues also without the Rode Wireless. We did have issues in a room with very strong WiFi routers so maybe it's just sensitive to that. Sorry I can't offer further help.
No, you can't. The H1n is a single stereo track recorder. It either records with the built in XY microphone, or via whatever microphone is plugged to the 3.5mm input. So, plugging a microphone to the 3.5mm disables the XY microphone. To do that you'll need a multi track recorder like the H5, H6, F3, etc.
Usually the integrated ones in whichever laptop I'm using. If you're asking which camera did I use to film this video, that's definitely not a webcam 😅. Can't remember exactly but it must have been a Sony a6400 or a Panasonic G9. Unless I used one of my Zcam's ... It's been a while.
If I plug a mic in my h1n and have it say 1metre away from it would I get audio from the mic AND the h1n or not only wondering as I use it at the moment to record audio for my motorbike and want to able to talk also
Short answer is: no. It's either the XY or the external (if plugged), but not both. The long answer will be in an "H1n Q&A" which will go out on Friday this week 😊 I hope you watch it 👍🏻
Oh! Fair enough I suppose, this is still a cheap consumer device so you can't expect miracles 🙂 I usually (never) listen at high volumes, so it works perfectly for me and my use cases 👍🏻

How does the Rode Video Micro work for recording live music performances?
I haven't tried that, but bear in mind that it is a fairly directional mic (sh*tgun style). I'd say a stereo mic would work better, in the case of this video, the H1n itself with the integrated XY would likely be a better option.

Hey Roger, thanks for your test! TBO, the H1n on its own would be my favorite :). Am I right that you need to be quite close to it, due to its characteristic?
