I remember seeing this movie as a teenager. I said to myself finally a movie made in Texas. After I saw it, I pretended it was made in the Philippines.
It's a sad reality but more and more I'm finding these old "bad movies" are way better than the crap currently being shucked out by Hollywood these day.
The parody theory holds water when you see that fight scene in the background while we're focused on mundane action in the foreground. That's a common trope in parody. Then you see that cook with the buck teeth, the big muscle guy who ripped off his vest and flexed, the hotel check in while a victim is in trouble etc. It makes too much sense that it's a parody.
Yeah, i´ve never really picked up on this, but now that Cecil has mentioned it... yeah i can definitely see it. - right of the bat, that actor is not what you would expect a police captain AND robotics doctor to look like - The inner monolog that was actually outer in the beginning, - yeah well, the coffee and the carrot... got to mention that amazing twist scene... - that hostage who took care of the hostage taker herself without the heroes help - ROTORS cheap ass metal skeleton demonstration that is waaaaaaaay more flexible than the actual thing - the absurd reduction in development time for ROTOR from what was it, 25 years down to 60 days, - that terribly obnoxious mop dude who activates this robot because of a headphone accident... - that lady scientist who had nothing better to do than to draw a caricature of mop dude - the incompetent replacement project leader with his overworked witty robot sidekick plus police cap (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy depressed robot flashbacks) - the fact that ROTOR had its own locker and bike, fueled up and ready to go, - ROTORS weird interactions with his environment and that young complaining cop - the fact that ROTOR takes his prime directive absolutely LITERALLY... TO JUDGE AND EXECUTE, he judged and exectuted that dude on the spot - that tiny Texas couch - the blatant contradiction that this highway cop couldn´ t handle car horns and couldn´t really enter or reach into a car, - the dubious "sensor recall" - the fake teeth - those embarrassing martial arts guys, especially the karate and muscle dudes - the woman sliding at comically high speed to the unconscious muscle dude on the ground asking him whether he is okay - the fake booth at the gas station - the terrible ADR - the protagonist tells the operator to call HOUSTON, Texas, which of course we see in text form too, just in case the audience forgot - well Dr. Steel and her whole look, choice of outfits and hair due...nothing that you would expect from a robotics doctor - the fact that the protagonist is calmy getting his doctor friend from the airport, they drive and talk nonesense and after she has given him a thought provoking speech she simply says, that he is the brains and she just the brawn...you know, after all this, and she´s also supposed to be a smart doctor of robotics - the final fight, with ROTOR and Skunk hair due lady fighting it out in the background (who would punch and kick something made out of metal???? she designed the exoskeleton herself!!!!!!) - and we have a final twist in the very end... can´t let the good guys win like in most other films there are more things, but these are the ones that i can think of right now
Yes! Thank you for covering this movie! When I was kid, the poster for this movie was hanging in my local video store (Rainbow Video), and I could not wait for R.O.T.O.R. to arrive. When it finally came out and I was probably the first to EVER rent the tape, I was so confused and incredibly disappointed. Like wow. They really got me with this one. I look back on that time as the moment I lost all childhood innocence, I learned a lot that night watching this movie. I love you R.O.T.O.R. You beautiful piece of crap.
One of my favorite GoodBad movies. Coldyron: "Let me tell you something, mister. You fire me and I'll make more noise than two skeletons making love in a tin coffin, brother."
2:26 - Fun fact: There's an argentinian indie rock band called "Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado" named after the line said by the dude holding the rifle. "This old boy just killed a motorcycle cop".
That's how a lot of these movies operated back then. They knew they had low budgets and no stars, so they commissioned kickass posters/VHS covers in the hopes that they might at least snag a few curious customers.
I grew up on a steady diet of 80's and 90's low budget cheese, yet you always manage to find something awesome I missed back in the day. New content from Good Bad Flicks is like Christmas morning for me. That is all.
The Rifftrax R.O.T.O.R. commentary is brilliant... you gotta give it mad props, Cecil. BTW, The Beach Boys references are incredible. I’ve never noticed that before.
I remember in the late 90’s I bought a Desert Eagle and I ordered some parts from the company (I think they were called “Magnum Research”) and they sent me some magazine or brochure or something and they were very proud that they supplied Desert Eagles for this movie, it was all over their flyer with scenes from this movie 😆
"My name is fake name, really fake name", dude I freakin love you this channel is amazing and your humor fits mine perfectly. Always cracking me up! I'm going to check into your Patreon!
My friend talked to the writee just before he died. He sent me the messages. They're in my FB somewhere. I'll have to go digging for them. But, from memory, you're pretty much on the money.
I have fond memories as a child browsing the VHS box covers at the gas station rental booth and seeing this on the shelves. I'm glad I never got around to watching it and truly appreciate you doing so for me!
Yeah i´ve always assumed that she was simply under shock and passed out. there was no reason for her to be dead. And why the heck did he keep calling her Tony? hehe, poor Sonya Also that explosion apparently blew her red top off... somehow
Hey GOOD BAD FLICKS! Huge fan...Been watching your channel for years. Recently watched IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS II on Shudder.....Didn't realize until half way through that I was watching the real face of GOOD BAD FLICKS!!! LOVE IT!
One of those video store classics where I never actually rented it, but distinctly remember the box art decades later. I hope the artist was paid well.
Soooooo we rented this movie because the cover was awesome. Granted during the days of VHS rentals even if a movie was bad you felt like its a win because of the low cost. So I literally fell out of my chair when you said look how little that couch is. Your review of this movie ....classic
Really enjoyed this video Cecil, you picked up on so much detail I had completely missed. That Beach Boys scene just floored me, I have seen this movie and I definitely think I don't pay enough attention.
We were watching the VHS late 80's with my neighbor friends back in Greece and finally i purchased it early 90's.. The poster-cover was iconic.💪 OMG! We cried of laughter😂 for many years..
Thanks for another great episode, Cecil. ROTOR has been making the rounds of heckling shows lately, so I gotta add it to my watch list. I'm still chuckling at the "Sensor Recall" and your colorful description of that technology.
"It's a good thing she had a CB in her car." LOL! Man, I love, love, love your videos! Thank you for making me laugh today. Much needed and appreciated.
ADR (Automated dialogue replacement) isn´t really that uncommon in the film industry, but usually it is done much better. Often you use ADR if you couldn´t get clean audio or couldn´t get any at all.
It looks like they did ADR for just the main actor only since the rest of the cast had smooth audio. I'm guessing they wanted someone with a different voice.
"Wait he's a Doctor now? I thought he was a police captain?" Well the to aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, and he is/was heading an advanced robotics program
Damn, I laughed to tears watching both the movie and your video - spot on commentary! I had ROTOR on my list for years and got around to watching it last year. What a ride!! 🤣🤣 But I gotta say: badass poster!
As a kid, I remember begging my Mom to rent this for me based on the awesome cover alone. About two hours later, I was pissed off and actually apologized to my Mom for the hassle.
Do you like Robocop, Terminator and Mad max? If so you'll love R.O.T.O.R! I'm imagining a person recording an advertisement trailer for the movie with those words and not being able to keep a straight face as they record in the studio :D Thanks for the video Cecil.
Ha, I was wondering why there was no R.O.T.O.R. on your channel! Finally! I was one of the "early adapters" when it comes to this movie. I watched on VHS when it was brand new. I didn't like it much back then. I guess my taste wasn't mature enough to appreciate that gigantic piece of cheese.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!! This movie is absurd. Thank you so much for this! I have got to watch this movie...preferably with friends and adult beverages (=
YES! I remember renting this video as a child because the cover art on the VHS was awesome...it was SURELY going to be awesome. I mean, it wasn't like awesome cover art mislead me before...
Oh man, Cecil! This is your funniest review yet!!! I was lmfao the whole time!! I definitely believe that this was originally written as a comedy. It would explain ALOT!! 😂😂😂😂😂
If this film was a full fledged comedy like it was originally attended, it might not have been so bad. I actually liked the humor that was kept in the final film. Shame it wasn't a full comedy. Good video man!
"That's me, Rick Douglas, M.D. I built a killer robot. Why? I was drunk one night and Dean Learner made me a bet. Now it's a race to see who will kill us first: the robot, or Liz's cooking."
This movie looks more like a sequel to TRAXX than anything that could have been imagined from looking at the poster. I say this in particular because the R.O.T.O.R. poster/VHS covers were one of those images that always stuck out from memories of my video renting youth, but for some reason I never actually got around to renting it. Still, I had this whole idea of what it was going to be like. I have to say this movie looks nothing like what I had imagined.
Couple of things: Coldyron has singlehandedly made detectives obsolete. He could have both saved himself a ton of trouble and made a fortune developing just the technology that allows you to SEE THROUGH TIME. Also ROTOR reaches through the glass and pulls the attendant through it. Not through the hole. Through the glass. Fun fact: I would love to track down Shoeboogie's actor, but he's not credited and nobody knows who he is, which makes me think that Shoeboogie was never real, just a collective hallucination.

not gonna lie, I unironically love the cover artwork with the metal body under the torn uniform. it's way better than this movie deserves.
pretty much every hardrock/metal band in the 80's had a cover like that! loved it, too! ^^
The artwork was waaaaaay better than the movie although the movie does have unintended comic value.
Almost all 80's movies had better poster art than the movie. Its marketing, and I understand it, but I dont like it.
it's better than the madmax cover!
I remember seeing this movie as a teenager. I said to myself finally a movie made in Texas. After I saw it, I pretended it was made in the Philippines.

It could have been conceived as a parody and at a later stage (by studio interference) made into a "serious" action film in the editing room.
Edit: should have watched the video to the end first 😅
They should've let them make the parody. There's a chance it could've made cult classic status, but for the right reasons.
I remember learning about this video in the Best of the Worst. The dancing skeleton robot clip is just so epic :v :v
First heard about it on Cinemassacre's Rental Review, but loved RLM's too! Check out the other if ya haven't seen the Rental Review!
Brings me back to the early days of Best of the Worst.
Back Problems and Robot Cop are highlights of that episode.
Back in the day when they were sponsored by Dan(Don) Wilson Safari: Des Moines' largest giraffe preserve
I know it would be reiterative, but they should do a BOTW Spotlight episode with it.
