Just found out Robot Jox was apparently written by one of my favourite authors, Joe Haldeman, hailed by the likes of Heinlein and receiving many awards for science fiction writing. His comment on the movie: "to me it's as if I'd had a child who started out well and then sustained brain damage".
Reminds me of his "Worlds" trilogy, the first two were great, the last one was shit, he just wrote down whatever intentionally shitty story in probably one go, because he had a contractual obligation.
In a lot of ways it feels like he would go back to the general premise with _Forever Peace_. Which would win both the Hugo and Nebula when it came out. Apparently he and Gordon had disagreements during the writing process, so that would make some sense out of it. Either of them probably could have made an interesting film alone but together we're stuck with something that's worse due to the conflict. All wrapped up in the typical Charles Band cheapness. Even if it was Empire's most expensive film. That's what's so interesting about it. All of them have produced great work before, but combined it was just a complete failure.

If you have a chance to get the shout factory bluray release of Robot Jox definitely do so, there's an excellent making of featurette that really shows just how much work went into the stop motion and miniature effects. While yes, dated today, they're still very impressive.
My Dad and I loved watching Robot Jox in the 80's, he is Ill right now after suffering a stroke, even if it's a shitty movie enjoy the time with your fam.
I'm being completely honest, this is one of the best youtube videos I've ever seen. These shitty movies are terrible and the way you destroyed them and talked about them made it great. Also, I would also destroy a movie that I didn't get to watch because it malfunctioned. Great video, I'm sharing it, liking it, and adding it to my favorites! Thanks guys.
R.O.T.O.R. is one of my favorite bad movies and has been for the last 3-4 years. Captain Coldyron is one of the weakest protagonists ever and I don't understand why a lesbian bodybuilder was brought in so late in the film as the muscle.
42:30 ROTOR blows up because the rope is supposed to be that "primer cord explosive" the main character was showing off at the beginning of the movie. (You didn't mention it in the summary, but it was set up. One of the few set up/payoff sequences in the film.)
I used to watch Robot Jox off and on as a kid and the reason the fights are worth sitting through all the drama is because....of the weight of the robots! The robot fights are epic, and they are WEIGHTY, a gaming term that definitely applies to this film. The massive robots have very much mass and are technically by controlled and mastered through skill and finesse not super speed dump ammo and pray and spray. Its worth a watch.
I saw Robot Jox before I came across redlettermedia, and I felt really anxious because it's a schlock-fest that's really enjoyable and gives you a good feeling in my opinion. So I wasn't sure what I'd think of what these guys would say about it. I'm glad that they say that it's a B-movie, NOT a "bad movie". It's really fun.
R.O.T.O.R. looks and sounds like a movie that was crafted geniusly to be hilariously bad. Those extended establishing shots with the lame punchline sound hilarious, I have to see it.
ROTOR is absolutely worth watching, it's hilariously bad. There are so many continuity errors it's ridiculous, but somehow it manages to transcend its own awfulness and be something genuinely enjoyable.
I was watching the Robot Jox segment in this episode there was a logo behind the Russian character and I was like “ wait that looks really familiar like it’s from a Japanese beer logo..” so I looked up Sapporo Beer and lo and behold it’s a striking resemblance. So In future, Sapporo beer will become its own superpower and build giant mech suits. Me gusta.
6:34 Anyone else wonder about the lost BotW episode Jay mentions in passing? What were those other two movies? What great jokes did we miss out on? The world may never know.
From the way they talk about the lost episode, sounds like the other two movies were just Robot Jox and Rotor. Can't attest to jokes we may have missed, but some of them probably just got used again for this episode.
I personally love Robot Jox because it was one of the dozen sci-fi VHS movies my dad had. The jungle gym trial, illiteracy, gourmet hotdogs never phased me.
It occurs to me that those 50 movie DVD packs are now just what make up most streaming services now. Only at least with the DVD pack you knew you weren't getting anything good whereas now all the bad movies are mixed together with the couple of good ones
There's actually two different versions of ROTOR that go by two different titles. There is ROTOR then there is the longer version called Blue Steel. The Blue Steel version makes it much clearer that it's supposed to be a satire/comedy. It's got a bunch of cringe inducing comedy scenes with back pain they cut out of rotor. Also robot cop breaks the 4th wall and says the movies plot is horrible and a terminator rip off at one point. So this was meant to be intentionally funny but someone took the film and cut out a lot of the comedy scenes in an attempt to pass it off as a serious film in the ROTOR version. The Blue Steel version is a bit more tonally consistent when it's obvious that the movie is supposed to be a spoof.
I'm rewatching all of BotW, and Jay's motion for "I don't wanna hear it" at 8:10 is something I've been doing for years. It's only just now that I realize this is probably where it came from.

@@DistractedGlobeGuy Just watched it back to be sure. After he picks skunk lady up from the airport they goto a hotel and you can clearly see him say, "remember at ROTORS christening" then it cuts to VO.
“Remember at ROTOR’s first communion…”
If you have a chance to get the shout factory bluray release of Robot Jox definitely do so, there's an excellent making of featurette that really shows just how much work went into the stop motion and miniature effects. While yes, dated today, they're still very impressive.
I decided to binge all this channels content before the new decade. Going good so far
Holy shit the robot jock falling on the crowd is the screaming loop at the beginning of NIN's "the becoming". Hm
My Dad and I loved watching Robot Jox in the 80's, he is Ill right now after suffering a stroke, even if it's a shitty movie enjoy the time with your fam.
Well at least they enjoyed "Robot Jox"; I love that movie despite its cheesiness. Of course, it's Shakespeare compared to "ROTOR".
Crash and burn!
Rotor... Best movie ever.. Seen it 20x.
"I called the suicide prevention hotline because of R.O.T.O.R. They told me to do it."
Omfg I'm crying. XDDDD
Captain Jin 21:26 It's the timing that really got me, how he interrupts Jay to deliver the last line. I fucking lost it
R.O.T.O.R. is... He told me to do it!
Jack eating his words after that R.O.T.O.R. stop motion action.
Now im googling 'Can horses drink coffee?'
superwishin I know it’s been a couple years, but what did you find?
I am also interested in your findings.
They can just not alot
@@sneakysnake7695 a lot*
R.O.T.O.R. is one of my favorite bad movies and has been for the last 3-4 years. Captain Coldyron is one of the weakest protagonists ever and I don't understand why a lesbian bodybuilder was brought in so late in the film as the muscle.
The Robot Jox segment really needed Mike IMHO. You know, with all the Star Trek actors and all.
I know! What a missed opportunity.
Thanks for even mentioning this I was wondering why the lead looked so familiar
My neighbours must be wondering at this point "What the fuck is up with that high pitched laughter there every night?"
That thing behind Rich Evans makes it look like he was hastily edited in the wide shot, like they cut his clip out in a square and pasted him in
42:30 ROTOR blows up because the rope is supposed to be that "primer cord explosive" the main character was showing off at the beginning of the movie. (You didn't mention it in the summary, but it was set up. One of the few set up/payoff sequences in the film.)
Someone at Sunrise saw Robot Jox, that's clearly where G Gundam came from.
Nothing like watching a 6 year old video with no new comments 💯🔥
NoizeAddict13 I feel you!
The Riff Trax version of ROTOR is gold.
R.O.T.O.R. was the best VHS cover on the shelf back in the day and never regretted renting that masterpiece
R.O.T.O.R. could have been a really good movie. Who wouldn't want to see a psychotic version of Robocop going Maniac Cop on a city?
I saw Robot Jox before I came across redlettermedia, and I felt really anxious because it's a schlock-fest that's really enjoyable and gives you a good feeling in my opinion. So I wasn't sure what I'd think of what these guys would say about it. I'm glad that they say that it's a B-movie, NOT a "bad movie". It's really fun.
This episode has become one of those things that seems to have always been there.
R.O.T.O.R. looks and sounds like a movie that was crafted geniusly to be hilariously bad.
Like an unironic Garth Marenghi.
It's amazing how ROTOR predicted Elon Musk's dancing robot 35 years ago. But his will be ready "next year"
Jack was definitely getting paid to wear that Funny or Die hoodie
I'm glad he was funny, so he didn't die.
Mike took a shot at them in one BOTW maybe jack felt bad?
@@christian_heretic You might be thinking of when they talked about Scary or Die, which was like... YEARS after this episode
good lord, i actually watched robot jox in the theatre
Same here. Me, my dad, 2 brothers, and what looked like a homeless man. 5 people in that whole theater.
robot jax is the movie of my childchood. I loved it then and still love it.
Me gusta.
They had a perfect opportunity to say "I'd give the vindicator a C++" I though this was supposed to be high quality humor you hack frauds!
I remember seeing "The Vindicator" as a kid. It kind of reminded me of a combo of Robocop, Frankenstein, and The Phantom of The Opera.
I love ROTOR.. One of the best bad movies EVER. Love the Beach Boys references too and the bad teeth and haircuts.
RIP Gary Graham 2024-01-22 🖖
I had the...ahem....honor of seeing Robot JOX in the theater. Glad y’all did a show that included this!
6:34 Anyone else wonder about the lost BotW episode Jay mentions in passing? What were those other two movies? What great jokes did we miss out on? The world may never know.
it's kept in a salt mine along with the only existing copy of "The Day the Clown Cried"
Appropriately, Robot Jox can be streamed on Tubi
I love The Vindicator! How dare you! Love the show guys!! Cant wait for more episodes with the Plinketto board !
41:42 - Pretty symbolic how "Back Problems" looks like he's literally shitting out the big "action sequence" final showdown.
There are actually two kids from Harry Potter in Thunderpants (the bully was Goyle). I wonder if they ever talked about it on the set.
I'm rewatching all of BotW, and Jay's motion for "I don't wanna hear it" at 8:10 is something I've been doing for years. It's only just now that I realize this is probably where it came from.
OMG, I have been looking for ROTOR forever. I remember watching it as a kid and never saw the ending. and let me tell you, trying to find a movie about a robot cop end in finding nothing but robocop.
I loved Robot Jox, I watched every time it came on HBO in the 90's
Damn, this is an old one but one of the best ones I’ve ever seen!
But the original Frankenstein story IS about revenge..
"Really, it's about family."
@@sevatarlives185 Thats what is so powerful about it.
