The main stream never seemed to pick the match I wanted to watch, at times they’d just show the athletes waiting for the decision for multiple minutes rather than the matches that were still ongoing. You could hear the crowd reacting to Owen Jones locking in a submission yet the main stream would still only show 2 guys fighting for collar ties until extra time.
it would be interesting to talk about how things may have turned out if all the CJI competitors didn’t leave adcc. like how much would the results have changed
Awesome stuff as always guys. What are your thoughts on doing the events over more than one weekend? You mentioned doing a 4 day event but how do you think it would change the dynamic (i.e. weight cuts, injuries, strategy changes) if it was two consecutive Saturday-Sundays with a 5 day gap in between?
One idea is a couple of divisions each day. Or -66 to -88 Thursday and Friday and the rest Saturday and Sunday. There will be logistical issues to consider. It also makes the absolute tricky for the lighter guys if that’s the last event. But I would like to see some outside of the box ideas rather than always defaulting to the tried and tested, which has its drawbacks. What do you think?
Here is my take on ADCC and CJI as a live spectator of both events. CJI: Friday start time of 10ish and starting with +80k was a bit rough for viewing. Plus the interview after each match dragged the event into 1am. Keep in mind there was no re-entry so being stuck there with sht food was rough. Saturday was packed especially during Kade vs Andrew match. The flow of matches was waaaay better which led to an arena type of energy only comparable to major UFC or prize boxing type of events. The overall big winner was the ally setup - we had mid seats and was able to watch most of the action. The addition of the wall made it way more entertaining vs the constant resets you see at ADCC. ADCC: was a bit shocked how empty Saturday was and parts of even Sunday (especially Gordon’s super fight was pretty empty). The energy and matches were similar to 2022 (my first ADCC) in my opinion but with a much better pace. The negative for ADCC was the horrific music during matches. The base was waaaaay too much and was making it very hard to stay and watch. Also for some reason the mat design and setup made it look like a lot of empty space, wish they put chairs down there or something to fill it up. Overall great weekend of celebrating jiu jitsu but really hope in the future that both events don’t happen on the same weekend. If I had the travel budget for just one based off my experience from this past weekend I would attend CJI and catch the stream of ADCC.
Thanks, that’s really helpful and interesting to get a live perspective. I’m intrigued to see what adjustments, if any, both make in the future. I hope they’re listening to the feedback. - Ross
Shout out to Marcelo Garcia performance got 7 subs straight as 77 kilo dude and only lost to Robert drysdale In finals ( who got caught up In the infamous match fixing scandal and had a bye round)
To comment on the crowd, not only does the arena have a higher capacity than Thomas and Mack, but CJI had a pretty significant section of the venue blocked off behind a curtain where the athletes made their entrances. I would say something like at least 1/5 or 1/6 of the seats were not open to the crowd. ADCC had a much smaller portion blocked off, and peak for peak, both crowds looked pretty similarly full being there. I would say ADCC definitely had a higher attendance. 🤷♂️
You’re right on the area blocked off, we talked about that on our CJI recap. Hopefully we get the numbers from both promotions, or there’s a way to find them out.
The ADCC music was so bad. My group all hated it because the bass was pounding us in the head all day. My phone said it was ~90dB and it gave us headaches within an hour.
I went to both live, I honestly felt like ADCC was better to watch in person. I didn’t mind the music being on during the matches, but I did think it was cool that they turned it off during the finals.
@@JiuJitsuOracle-lz9yf I think the pacing was better, much less time between fights. I feel like there was always someone on the mat. The first day at CJI was awesome but we were there all night.
I hate how "DoughGrapping" has RNC on BJJ streaming. CJI proves that you can still keep the sport accessible to a broader audience. *CJI May have just revolutionized modern BJJ tournaments! I luv how we were able to enjoy every match without having to choose which mat we need to focus on. ADCC did nothing real to stand out, they did what they normally do. I think ADCC has no choice but to step up their game if they want to stay relevant.
ADCC had some good stuff going on. But I think it's bad for the sport to place so much on Nicky Ryan's brother. He is the best, but his arrogance is only exasperating this point, and his matches are boring as he has chosen to define his legacy by win rate only. I think ADCC would be much better if they got off NRB's d***, same for Flo.
@@lennieleng9679 First of all, boring doesn't mean lacking incredible technique, finesse, etc. Of course he puts that on display. But we want to see the submission. We want to be entertained. We want to see a display of strength, technique, and heart, that captivates us as an audience. Both of his ADCC '24 fights failed to deliver in this sense.
Meregali getting smoked was the highlight of ADCC
Nice vid again chaps
Thanks a lot

I also want to know, how neutered was the ADCC lineup because of CJI?

I don't think it would work unless you could get ADCC to pay for the guys' rooms and food. These guys can't afford 10 days of hotels and food

Comment for the algorithm God, cheers boys🎉
Thanks a lot. Response for the same God.
For your Flo zone point think of how the ncaa wrestling tournament is held

This guys right, if anything adcc finals was the biggest crowd
I was also at both and would agree Adcc seemed more full overall
Mica winning the Grand Slam! Is it me or did I miss you talking about it?
If we didn’t mention it here, it’s in our next episode which should be out tomorrow.

Thanks for getting in touch. It's interesting to hear from people who were there live. Are there any reasons you preferred ADCC as a spectacle?

I was at both as well- agree with you regarding the slow pacing at CJI. I hated the music at ADCC tho.

My wife had to go get ibuprofen due to the music.
I’ve read quite a few comments complaining about the music and in particular the level of the bass.

The music at ADCC was horrible. It was punishing to be there.
The 88 99 and 99plus brackets were 100x better than CJI 80plus bracket. Outside of Nicky rod and a couple others it was borderline unwatchable.
