When you see the sorts of things Anakin has done, it makes sense why Darth Vader would tell Luke that it was too late for him and that he was beyond saving.

Always considered it a weakness of Lucas' story that he made Vader have a good side and then spent all of episode 3 showing how bad Anakin was. This idea that there "is good in him" is a moral disaster of storytelling. It seems all romantic and because people want to believe in redemption stories Lucas gets away with it, but I find it all off-putting.

@@TheDanEdwards that was the whole point of the Skywalker saga mate. It was supposed to show how Vader became the person he is. At the end of the day, Vader was still the chosen one and brought balance. Qui-Gon, Padame and Luke all knew it.

@@TheDanEdwards - contrary to what we like to believe about the world, good people do bad things, make bad decisions and have bad impulses, and evil people have good impulses, can do good and make good decisions.
The difference between a good person and an evil person isn't some innate tendency but just the circumstances they find themselves caught up in and the emotional choices they make when faced with them.
To risk Godwin's Law, even Hitler started off as an innocent baby, grew into a struggling wannabe artist, and was then ground down and radicalised by spending WW1 being brutalised by trench warfare and then the years after the war watching Austria and Germany be economically asset stripped by the victors for war reparations. He didn't even found Nazism: he was initially sent to infiltrate it on behalf of the Weimar government and report back on their activities, just as many other former soldiers were sent to infiltrate other workers' unions so the government could keep an eye on what they were up to. Even his antisemitism was normal for the time. Evil men are made, not born, as uncomfortable as that is to admit.
When the Nazis invaded Poland they sent regular German police units to enforce their rule, most of whom went along with the extrajudicial killings and other injustices out of a sense of loyalty to their comrades, not because they were innately bad to begin with. All these things were studied and learned after WW2 because we couldn't understand how humans could do it to each other, and every test and study - even using regular American college students - showed that we humans will do abominable things with the right motivations, be it love or loyalty or simply fear of authority or of failure. Good people can be made into monsters with the right emotional nudging, and the studies show it doesn't take all that much nudging if you find the right motivator.
It's why i fundamentally reject the concept of the Greater Good, because that's generally one of the best motivators of evil acts.

Anakin's turning to the dark side is what killed Padme; it's not simply that he failed to save her after all that; his own turning is what he was foreseeing. Had he not given into the fear and tried to "save her" she never would have needed saving. That's what makes the story so tragic. She only died in child birth because she was so heartbroken (and physically harmed from the choking).

It's even more heartbreaking because it speaks volumes of how little Obi-Wan actually understood the pain of his padawan. Obi-Wan saw Anakin as a brother, while Anakin had no need for such a figure. He desperately needed a father and always wanted Obi-Wan to see that. But, even as Anakin was burning alive and screaming for death, Obi-Wan still doesn't understand. He call's him "brother" yet again. That was the final nail in the coffin for Anakin, and that's the look you see in his eyes before Obi-Wan leaves...

Remember what Yoda told Anakin in Episode 1. “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.”
In TPM we see Anakin fearful of leaving his mother and everything he knows.
In AOTC we see that fear manifest into anger. He’s angry because he feels he failed his mother.
In ROTS it’s all recapped. He’s fearful of losing those closest to him, he’s angry and frustrated at the council for their lack of trust in him. Then the last part of the journey is that anger turning into hate, he begins to resent the Jedi and Obi-Wan.
Finally the hate turns into suffering. The moment the mask closes on his face, he is entombed in the suit, confined to suffering for the rest of his days, living in pain, living with his loss. His worst fears were realised and it was all at the hand of a master manipulator Palpatine. He completely played Anakin, The Jedi, Dooku, Grevious, the Senate, the Republic and the Separatists like a game of chess.
Anakin’s story arc across episodes 1-6 is both the ultimate tragedy and the greatest redemption arc.

He's basically been groming Anakin constantly being around him and planting the seeds that would eventually get Anakin to turn to the dark side. Honestly, I'd have to disagree slightly. Prequels were good, and the music is undeniably peak Star Wars, but reception of it wasn't amazing. And probably George Lucas' weakest skill in movie making, the dialogue was just not it. The work done with The Clone Wars is in my opinion what really redeemed the prequels for the majority of audiences. Holes were filled, we got deeper character arcs for the characters (especially one character that we don't meet in the prequels), and it brings more attention to the Clones. I think the combination of the Clone Wars series and the prequel movies are what makes it peak. Without The Clone Wars, the prequel movies don't quite make it to the top of the mountain.

One of the great details of this movie is that at every stage Anakin turns to the Jedi seeking help and advice. The scene with Yoda epitomises it perfectly, Anakin is struggling with his feelings and the visions he is having and instead of offering some kind of support the Jedi essentially shame him for having those feelings and advise him to just stop caring.
It's similar to when people seek help for depression and other mental health issues, when the person you confides it turns around and says you should just try being happy or try not having those feelings it just contributes to the spiral.
If for one moment the Jedi hadn't been so rigid in their orthodoxy and addressed the issues their members were facing with the compassion they are supposed to embody then Anakin most likely would have got the help he needed and not felt as though the dark side was his only avenue.
The Clone Wars has a few arc that emphasis how broken the Jedi Order is during this period

(He said something similar to Luke in "The Empire Strikes Back" -- not to let his anger control him.) Anakin broke the Jedi code when he sought revenge for his mother's death and when he married Padme. His attachments led him to let his anger make his choices. Thus he chose the expedience of the dark side, the satisfaction of revenge over choosing the good. He let his anger -- not love -- make his choices.

Anakin's fall to the Dark Side was rooted in his fear, especially his fear of loss. He already lost his mother to the Tusken Raiders, and even slaughtering that camp didn't cure his emotions regarding that travesty. But having similar nightmares pop up, this time about losing Padme in childbirth, really sent Anakin over the edge. Palpatine played him like a fiddle, manipulating him against the Jedi, fully aware that they were also playing him against the Chancellor in return. Anakin was caught between two extreme parties, neither of which were prepared to fully place their faith in him. In the end, Palpatine lied in saying Vader had killed Padme, which cemented his pain and anger in the Dark Side, while Obi-Wan and Yoda exiled themselves, to Tatooine and Dagobah, respectively.

My take on why Anakin says to Mace “it’s not the Jedi way” in the scene with Palpatine is that he says it as a test. The Jedi council (and especially Mace) have been such sticklers of sticking to the Jedi code, that if Mace killed Palpatine in that moment, it would just prove to Anakin the hypocrisy of the Jedi.
Hopefully y’all watch the Clone Wars show! It makes Anakin’s turn to the dark side even more depressing because it shows even more of his heroic, charismatic side. That along with his relationship with Obi-Wan, Padmé, and Ahsoka (a new character introduced in the Clone Wars show) being further fleshed out makes his turn all the more tragic. It also shows even more of the dark side slowly consuming him and his distrust of the Jedi council/order grow even more.
And I haven’t read the Vader comics (I plan to tho) but from what I’ve read, Vader was practically tortured constantly by Palpatine after the events of this movie. Palpatine even purposely designs the Vader suit to be uncomfortable to keep Vader feeding off the dark side. It’s truly tragic and it all makes the events in the original trilogy even more satisfying

Something I wasn't aware of until recently - the parallels between Mace Windu about to kill Palpatine vs Anakin about to kill Dooku not too long before. Specifically, when Anakin was wrestling with the idea of killing Dooku, Palpatine said "He's too dangerous to be kept alive", and when Mace was about to kill Palpatine, Mace says "He's got control over the Senate and the Courts, *He's too dangerous to be kept alive*".
When Anakin says "from my point of view, the Jedi are evil", that's 100% influenced by the last thing a Jedi said to Anakin Skywalker (before he truly became Darth Vader by cutting off that Jedi's hand) being *identical* to what had previously been spoken by a Sith Lord. They showed him that, when you take away the deceptions, the lies, and the propaganda, nothing really separated Jedi from Sith. They both went to the extreme with concepts that were best in moderation and with self-awareness.
Making things even more difficult was the previous 3 years, the Clone Wars. The Jedi fought as Generals (no longer peacekeepers, now [arguably] warmongers), and while most went through PTSD in varying capacities, there were even some who fully embraced Darkness (Sora Bulq was a Weequay [Jabba's guards who weren't the green, pig-like Gammoreans] Jedi from Legends Continuity [pre-Disney], and Pong Krell was the same species as Dexter Jetsetter [the Diner owner that Obi-Wan goes to in order to learn more about the Kaminoan Saberdart], who was in the Clone Wars Season 3 Umbara Arc [certifiably traumatizing, far more impactful if you have the foundation of certain previous episodes, for which the internet has numerous lists and this post is getting a bit long 🙃]).
Back to the original point, Anakin's Fall was heartbreaking, and the animated series The Clone Wars makes it even more so. I definitely recommend watching that next/ soon, you'll love it and the Prequels that much more!
In any case, thank you so much for sharing your reactions with us, you all make me smile every day, and I hope being a part of the Star Wars Fandom with us makes you smile too 😁

Also, the novelization of this movie has *the best* opening:
      INTRODUCTION: The Age of Heroes
The skies of Coruscant blaze with war.
The artificial daylight spread by the capital's orbital mirrors is sliced by intersecting flames of ion drives and punctuated by starburst explosions; contrails of debris raining into the atmosphere become tangled ribbons of cloud. The nightside sky is an infinite lattice of shining hairlines that interlock planetoids and track erratic spirals of glowing gnats. Beings watching from rooftops of Coruscant's endless cityscape can find it beautiful.
      From the inside, it's different.
The gnats are drive-glows of starfighters. The shining hairlines are light-scatter from turbolaser bolts powerful enough to vaporize a small town. The planetoids are capital ships.
The battle from the inside is a storm of confusion and panic, of galvened particle beams flashing past your starfighter so close that your cockpit rings like a broken annunciator, of the bootsole shock of concussion missiles that blast into your cruiser, killing beings you have trained with and eaten with and played and laughed and bickered with. From the inside, the battle is desperation and terror and the stomach-churning certainty that the whole galaxy is trying to kill you.
Across the remnants of the Republic, stunned beings watch in horror as the battle unfolds live on the HoloNet. Everyone knows the war has been going badly. Everyone knows that more Jedi are killed or captured every day, that the Grand Army of the Republic has been pushed out of system after system, but this --
A strike at the very heart of the Republic?
      An invasion of Coruscant itself?
      How can this happen?
It's a nightmare, and no one can wake up.
Live via HoloNet, beings watch the Separatist droid army flood the government district. The coverage is filled with images of overmatched clone troopers cut down by remorselessly powerful destroyer droids in the halls of the Galactic Senate itself.
A gasp of relief: the troopers seem to beat back the attack. There are hugs and even some quiet cheers in living rooms across the galaxy as the Separatist forces retreat to their landers and streak for orbit --
We won! beings tell each other. We held them off!
But then new reports trickle in -- only rumors at first -- that the attack wasn't an invasion at all. That the Separatists weren't trying to take the planet. That this was a lightning raid on the Senate itself.
The nightmare gets worse: the Supreme Chancellor is missing.
Palpatine of Naboo, the most admired man in the galaxy, whose unmatched political skills have held the Republic together. Whose personal integrity and courage prove that the Separatist propaganda of corruption in the Senate is nothing but lies. Whose charismatic leadership gives the whole Republic the will to fight on.
Palpatine is more than respected. He is loved.
Even the rumor of his disappearance strikes a dagger to the heart of every friend of the Republic. Every one of them knows it in her heart, in his gut, in its very bones --
Without Palpatine, the Republic will fall.
And now confirmation comes through, and the news is worse than anyone could have imagined. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine has been captured by the Separatists -- and not just the Separatists.
He's in the hands of General Grievous.
Grievous is not like other leaders of the Separatists. Nute Gunray is treacherous and venal, but he's Neimoidian: venality and treachery are expected, and in the Viceroy of the Trade Federation they're even virtues. Poggle the Lesser is Archduke of the weapon masters of Geonosis, where the war began: he is analytical and pitiless, but also pragmatic. Reasonable. The political heart of the Separatist Confederacy, Count Dooku, is known for his integrity, his principled stand against what he sees as corruption in the Senate. Though they believe he's wrong, many respect him for the courage of his mistaken convictions.
These are hard beings. Dangerous beings. Ruthless and aggressive.
      General Grievous, though --
      Grievous is a monster.
The Separatist Supreme Commander is an abomination of nature, a fusion of flesh and droid -- and his droid parts have more compassion than what remains of his alien flesh. This halfliving creature is a slaughterer of billions. Whole planets have burned at his command. He is the evil genius of the Confederacy. The architect of their victories.
      The author of their atrocities.
And his durasteel grip has closed upon Palpatine. He confirms the capture personally in a wideband transmission from his command cruiser in the midst of the orbital battle. Beings across the galaxy watch, and shudder, and pray that they might wake up from this awful dream.
Because they know that what they're watching, live on the HoloNet, is the death of the Republic.
Many among these beings break into tears; many more reach out to comfort their husbands or wives, their crèche-mates or kin-triads, and their younglings of all descriptions, from children to cubs to spawn-fry.
But here is a strange thing: few of the younglings need comfort. It is instead the younglings who offer comfort to their elders. Across the Republic--in words or pheromones, in magnetic pulses, tentacle-braids, or mental telepathy -- the message from the younglings is the same: Don't worry. It'll be all right.
Anakin and Obi-Wan will be there any minute.
They say this as though these names can conjure miracles.
Anakin and Obi-Wan. Kenobi and Skywalker. From the beginning of the Clone Wars, the phrase Kenobi and Skywalker has become a single word. They are everywhere. HoloNet features of their operations against the Separatist enemy have made them the most famous Jedi in the galaxy.
Younglings across the galaxy know their names, know everything about them, follow their exploits as though they are sports heroes instead of warriors in a desperate battle to save civilization. Even grown-ups are not immune; it's not uncommon for an exasperated parent to ask, when faced with offspring who have just tried to pull off one of the spectacularly dangerous bits of foolishness that are the stock-in-trade of high-spirited younglings everywhere, So which were you supposed to be, Kenobi or Skywalker?
Kenobi would rather talk than fight, but when there is fighting to be done, few can match him. Skywalker is the master of audacity; his intensity, boldness, and sheer jaw-dropping luck are the perfect complement to Kenobi's deliberate, balanced steadiness. Together, they are a Jedi hammer that has crushed Separatist infestations on scores of worlds.
All the younglings watching the battle in Coruscant's sky know it: when Anakin and Obi-Wan get there, those dirty Seppers are going to wish they'd stayed in bed today.
The adults know better, of course. That's part of what being a grown-up is: understanding that heroes are created by the HoloNet, and that the real-life Kenobi and Skywalker are only human beings, after all.
Even if they really are everything the legends say they are, who's to say they'll show up in time? Who knows where they are right now? They might be trapped on some Separatist backwater. They might be captured, or wounded. Even dead.
Some of the adults even whisper to themselves, They might have fallen.
Because the stories are out there. Not on the HoloNet, of course -- the HoloNet news is under the control of the Office of the Supreme Chancellor, and not even Palpatine's renowned candor would allow tales like these to be told--but people hear whispers. Whispers of names that the Jedi would like to pretend never existed.
Sora Bulq. Depa Billaba. Jedi who have fallen to the dark. Who have joined the Separatists, or worse: who have massacred civilians, or even murdered their comrades. The adults have a sickening suspicion that Jedi cannot be trusted. Not anymore. That even the greatest of them can suddenly just . . . snap.
The adults know that legendary heroes are merely legends, and not heroes at all.
These adults can take no comfort from their younglings. Palpatine is captured. Grievous will escape. The Republic will fall. No mere human beings can turn this tide. No mere human beings would even try. Not even Kenobi and Skywalker.
And so it is that these adults across the galaxy watch the HoloNet with ashes where their hearts should be.
Ashes because they can't see two prismatic bursts of realspace reversion, far out beyond the planet's gravity well; because they can't see a pair of starfighters crisply jettison hyperdrive rings and streak into the storm of Separatist vulture fighters with all guns blazing.
A pair of starfighters. Jedi starfighters. Only two.
      Two is enough.
Two is enough because the adults are wrong, and their younglings are right.
Though this is the end of the age of heroes, it has saved its best for last.

After finishing the Clone Wars, Anakin’s attitude hit differently, especially in the scene when Mace didn’t give him the rank of Master.
Prior, I used to see it as really bratty and ungrateful, now after the stuff that’s happened that’s led to this point, it’s more of a “Seriously?” After everything they’ve been through fighting in the Clone Wars, it’s easier to see how he’s become more jaded than easily swayed.
Anakin never had a father, and Qui-Gon would have been that, but he sadly died and Obi-Wan, who is more of a brother than a father figure to Anakin, only trained him as a promise to his dying master. Without that sort of elder guidance it’s easy to be attached to any fatherly figure, even though Palpatine was totally being completely manipulative.

@@DZatheus yeah agree . As a kid i prefered the chips storyline but it doens't actually make a lot of sense and i realize now its a lil cringy and immature

It's not the clones' fault! In the Clone Wars animated series, you find out there are inhibitor chips in their heads that take over their minds and force them to execute order 66. In reality, a lot of the clones were very close and loyal to their jedi and were heartbroken when they discovered what they did.

His children is what brought balance to the force. One Male one Female this story tells us there is balance in everything. One rich one poor, it is a lovely story.

The best sound track and best fights out of all of Star Wars

@45:37 that line makes me laugh all the time.
But seriously though, my favorite part is Yoda vs. Palpatine/Darth Sidious. The music and the choir help to elevate the tension in the final fights of this film.

I've seen this movie countless times, read through lots of the extended universe lore, and still I NEVER realized that Padme had an intentional baby bump at her funeral. I always thought they were just showing that little carved thing Anakin had given her in the phantom menace.
Also, I wanna say I loved this reaction! Really nice to see you guys being taken on such an emotional rollercoaster! It's easy to forget how impactful this movie was, with how much it gets memed everywhere.
Now you MUST watch "Star War The Third Gathers: Backstroke of the West"! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

You are so lucky you don't have to wait for each movie to come out. I remember being so excited when a new one came out. They are all so awesome.

Anakin's story is tragic. He lost his mother in such a brutal way- for the first time releasing those powerful emotions. He was so terrified to lose Padme, he would have done anything to protect her. When he kills the Separatists on Mustafar, you can see tears in his eyes. He didn't want to do what he did. He felt like he had no choice. Once he had done it, there was no going back, so he accepted his fate as a Sith- the epitome of evil, until his son, the true chosen one, helped release him from his torment.

Anakin remained the chosen one. Luke saves him morally, but it is Anakin who destroys the emperor in the end and brings balance.

George Lucas confirmed that Anakin/Vader was and is still The Chosen One. Throughout all of Star Wars. He killed the Emperor in the end, after seeing the light through his son.

That little token on Padme's finger at her funeral procession was the Japor snippet that Anakin carved for her when he was a little boy.
